June is definitely summertime. The weather and water are warm. Those of you who did not make it to the Blue Lagoon dive/bbq/campout missed a very nice time. Also, I went to the ‘Sharkwater’ movie put on by CHUM and HUC. It was an eye opener. I knew that shark finning was devastating the shark population but I didn’t realize it is estimated worldwide at over 5000 per hour, 24/7. I realize that it is a documentary film directed against the longlining and shark finning industries but it is worth seeing at least once.

I encourage members and your friends to come out and join us on our activities. It is good to get out with a bunch of other divers. A lot of people have expressed interest in going to Mammoth Lake and so Saturday, July 19th looks like a good day. More details forthcoming.

Kyle Stephens has resigned as Vice President and we need someone who is willing to take that position. The primary duties are to schedule speakers at the monthly general meeting and attend the BAD Board of Directors meetings. Please email me if you would like to help out as VP.

The ‘fleamarket’ has been officially renamed the ‘Scuba Diver Market & Expo’. Now we have some work to do. Since the market is earlier this year, Saturday, September 20, we need to get the word out and do the preparations. I need people that are willing to take on a few responsibili-ties. In particular, we need to do mailouts, have someone track the vendors, someone to coordinate the food court, someone to coordinate the beer and beverage, someone to assist with the presentations by the conservation organiza-

tions, people to help Randy with load in/out of the vendors and someone to supervise the volunteers. Please contact me at [email protected] to help.

Don’t forget that we have BAD merchandise for sale. We have the new window/bumper stickers and shirts. Come to the BAD meeting and we will hook you up.

See you at the next meeting. Dive safe and dive often.

Shirley Yarbrough is a new member of BAD. She had been snorkeling for years and it inspired her to go fur-ther. Since her kids were grown, she no longer had any reasons NOT TO GET CERTIFIED, she decided to give diving a shot. She became certified in June of 2006.

Shirley lives in Webster and she has 2 children, one son and one daughter, and 5 grandchildren.

Shirley's favorite places to dive are St. Lucia, where she did some drift dives and shore dives, and Anse Castanet.

Randy has been diving for over 40 years. His love for the water started when he was very young. Randy started out as a competitive water skier, but when things in his life changed, and he could no longer ski, he set his heart on learning to dive.

While he was in high school, he repeatedly asked for permission to take lessons, but his dad would not agree to it. Then, in 1968, when Randy was out of school, and he started working for General Dynamics in Fort Worth, he got his long awaited opportunity to learn. General Dynamics had several clubs, and a scuba club was one of them. They offered free classes, so Randy jumped on this chance to finally live out his dream.

In 1972, he became a dive instructor for the YMCA and he taught for 18 years. At his last count, he certified over 2,000 divers. In 1984, Randy became a licensed US Coast Guard Charter Boat Captain and he worked as captain on the Spree and Fling for over 18 years.

Randy has made more than 4,000 dives with more than 500 of those being trips to The Flower Garden, which happens to be one of his favorite places to dive. He loves it there because everything is so "alive". Another of Randy's favorite places to dive is Roatan. It is a special place to him because it is worry free, everything is "taken care of for you", so you can relax and enjoy yourself.

Randy's wife is a diver, and the two of them have one daughter. Randy has also been president of BAD for 4 years, and currently serves as a member of the BAD Board. Randy's wife, Robbie, is also a diver, and the two of them have one daughter.

On June 7 & 8, 2008 B.A.D showed up at Blue Lagoon 2, Shelter 6 which is north of Huntsville, TX. Lots of comradely and good food abounded along with lots of underwater dive time available. You really missed a good time, we had a good turn out and good fellow-ship. PeeWee (Rodney) Dwire brought his underwater scooters and everyone had plenty of time on the scooters. Jim Delane provided a pit to cook food on, as well as providing some of the food, Thanks Jim. We had chicken, sausage, and dogs, coleslaw, potato salad, cook-ies and watermelon for dinner Sat. Jim play his guitar and sang for entertainment. Sunday morning we awoke to fix Breakfast Tacos and more diving. This was an enjoyable and laid back event. Thanks to all that participated in and supported this event.

“It’s free, created as part of our mission and is supported both by DAN and member donations.”

The DIDS is a board-and-tag system to help dive operators with a physical accounting of divers. Each tag has a number that corresponds to a diver. The boat does not leave the area until all tags are back on the board and all divers are accounted for.

Other methods include head counts and roll calls.

Dive with care

Scuba diving, as other sports, is not risk-free, but it is a relatively safe sport. Since its founding in 1980, DAN has advocated safe practices to minimize risks. This is especially critical for those divers who like to challenge the limits of diving, whether it’s diving deep, exploring caves and wrecks or chasing an elusive creature for a perfect underwater photo.

For divers, real-life knowledge, which evolves from training and preparation, is the best safety factor. Keep up with your skills, and practice as often as you can. Approach all dives with caution but also with the joy of anticipation.

DAN Products Can Help You Get Noticed

• DIDS Board

Developed by DAN to help dive operators with a physical accounting of divers, it’s a board-and-tag system called the DAN Diver Identification System. One of its most appealing aspects is that it is free.

At the beginning of each dive trip, the divemaster assigns each diver an individually numbered DAN DIDS tag. When divers are on the boat, they keep their individual tags on the DIDS board. But before diving, divers remove their tags from the board and clip them to their buoyancy compensation devices (dive vest). The tag number also corresponds to the divemas-ter’s roster number.

When returning to the boat, divers remove their tags and re-turn them to the board; the divemaster then checks the DAN DIDS board for missing tags. Bottom line: The boat does not leave the dive site until all the tags are replaced on the board and all divers are accounted for.

For more information, go to www.DiversAlertNetwork.org/membership/biz/dids.asp or call DAN at +1-919-684-2948,

In the wake of recent incidents, DAN provides solutions.

Why do strandings happen?

Despite its happy ending, many people and organizations are working together to trace the sequence of events in this latest inci-dent and offer safeguards to prevent such mishaps in the future.

DAN® is one of those entities.

It’s a fact: Despite the best-laid plans, circumstances can go awry. Divers have surfaced to find their boat has left them behind. In addition, divers can get swept away by currents and surface downstream from their personal boats. Or perhaps divers didn’t leave anyone on their boats, or lost anchor or broke a mooring again without anyone on board.

The low numbers of incidents, however, don’t diminish the fear — and dangers — of being stranded. But there are safeguards.

Use these precautions

• Make sure you’re noticed. Don’t be shy: Introduce yourself to everyone you’ll be diving with. That way, you’ll recognize one another, and there’s less chance of being missed.

• Be redundant. Recreational divers can take a tip from tech-nical divers (e.g., deep divers, cave divers) and use redundant systems. That means if one device fails, they'll have a backup. Di-vers, take note of dive conditions and carry at least two of these emer-gency signaling devices:

• Surface marker buoys, so-called “safety sausages." Use these bright-colored plastic tubes that, once inflated, can be seen at great distances.

• Dive whistles, an audible notification that you want atten-tion. Good if you’re out of air in your buoyancy compensation de-vice, they are powered by your lungs. Keep that in mind, though, if you think you’ll be in swells and surge.

• Air horns. Like the whistle, it’s an audible warning. This one, however, is powered by the air in your buoyancy compensation device. Because the blast comes from a greater pressure than your lungs can provide, the sound can carry over a longer distance.

• Flares. A good backup for your surface marker buoy or air horn, keep in mind these lighting devices can be subject to malfunc-tion when wet as well as a short firing range.

• Mirrors. As with flares, mirrors are good backup devices. They are more easily spotted by boats in calm waters.

• Emergency radio beacons, called EPIRBs for Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, are tracking transmitters that interface with the international satellite system for search and rescue. Once viewed as fairly technical, these devices are being used more often by divers in remote locales.

• Accounting, anyone? Dive operations should use at least two means of accounting for their divers. “We hope that the DAN Diver Identification System will be one of these means of keeping track,” said Dan Orr, DAN President and CEO. “It’s free, created as part of our mission and is supported both by DAN and member donations.”

1780 British warship found in Lake Ontario

Intact 80-foot sloop is oldest ever found in the Great Lakes By William Kates

Sent in by Jim Ward

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A 22-gun British warship that sank during the American Revolution and has long been regarded as one of the "Holy Grail" shipwrecks in the Great Lakes has been discovered at the bottom of Lake Ontario, astonishingly well-preserved in the cold, deep water, explorers announced Friday.

Shipwreck enthusiasts Jim Kennard and Dan Scoville used side-scanning sonar and an unmanned submersible to locate the HMS Ontario, which was lost with barely a trace and as many as 130 people aboard during a gale in 1780.

The 80-foot sloop of war is the oldest shipwreck and the only fully intact British warship ever found in the Great Lakes, Scoville and Kennard said.

"To have a Revolutionary War vessel that's practically intact is unbelievable. It's an archaeological miracle," said Canadian author Arthur Britton Smith, who chronicled the history of the HMS Ontario in a 1997 book, "The Legend of the Lake."

The finders of the wreck said they regard it as a war grave and have no plans to raise it or remove any of its artifacts. They said the ship is still considered the property of the British Admiralty.

Although the vessel sits in an area where the water is up to 500 feet deep and cannot be reached by anyone but the most experi-enced divers, Kennard and Scoville declined to give its exact location, saying only that it was found off the southern shore.

The sloop was discovered resting partially on its side, with two masts extending more than 70 feet above the lake bottom.

"Usually when ships go down in big storms, they get beat up quite a bit. They don't sink nice and square. This went down in a huge storm, and it still managed to stay intact," Scoville said. "There are even two windows that aren't broken. Just going down, the pressure difference, can break the windows. It's a beautiful ship."

The Ontario went down on Oct. 31, 1780, with a garrison of 60 British soldiers, a crew of about 40, mostly Canadians, and possibly about 30 American war prisoners.

There are an estimated 4,700 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, including about 500 on Lake Ontario.

"There have been an unprecedented number of loggerhead turtle strandings this year; 18 have been recorded so far on the UK coast," Rod Penrose explains Marine Environmental Moni-toring has received several calls from coastguards and walkers along the South Coast reporting turtles being washed up.

Mr Penrose, the UK and the Irish Republic's turtle strandings coordinator, says: "Strandings have been reported from Cornwall to Wales and islands off Scotland."

Loggerheads (Caretta caretta) are categorised as endangered on the internationally recognised Red List of Threatened Species. They breed on the northwest Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean coasts.

Struggle to survive Mr Deaville says: "Causes of death have predominantly been a result of 'cold shock'.

"Hard-shell species of marine turtle, like loggerheads, are normally found in warmer waters south of the UK and are unable to raise their body temperature in order to survive in cold UK waters.

Gulf Dead Zone Likely to Set Record Posted June 12, 2008 Sent in by Jim Ward

U.S. News reports the growth and environmental impact of marine dead zones: large, oxygen-depleted swaths of water that form each summer off the U.S. coast because of fertilizer runoff and other pollutants.

Among other concerns, scientists have warned that efforts to meet recently adopted U.S. energy policies will likely stall efforts to reduce the size of dead zones, since the extra fertilizer needed to satisfy the demand for corn for corn-based ethanol will send more nitrogen and phosphorous into waterways. Now, new figures point to the immediacy of the problem.

In a forecast released this week, a team of Louisiana scientists predicts that the Gulf of Mexico dead zone will cover more than 10,000 square miles this summer, a swath nearly 20 percent larger than the record-setting dead zone of 2002 and more than 50 percent larger than the annual average since 1990.

This year, researchers began finding low-oxygen (or hypoxic) regions around coastal Louisiana in March. Since then, as the runoff from spring crop plantings has made its way south down the Mississippi, these regions have been growing, as accumulating nitrogen and phosphorous fuel the growth of algae that, upon decomposing, depletes the water of oxygen. The cycle this year has been aided by more water flowing into the Gulf from the Missis-sippi because of rainfall and year-to-year climate changes.
