2013/2014 Board of Directors Reinventing BusinessT

    he Cadillac Area Chamber of

    Commerce has been the leading

voice for businesses in this area

for over 110 years. No organiza-

tion can survive that long without

a mission and vision that is well document-

ed and embraced by all its employees. Also,

the company needs to be flexible enough

to adapt to different times. Whether that

means reviewing programs and seeing if they

are still relevant or embracing technology

and utilizing it to be more productive. YourChamber of Commerce is and has been rein-

venting itself constantly over the years.

Our Mission Statement is as follows: The

Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce is a

visible business leader that advocates and

    drives business opportunities. Through

business alliances, we are a catalyst for

our membership and provide a persuasive

    regional voice benefiting our communities.

This is not the original mission statement,

nor is it the second one, we look at it yearly.

Is it still relevant? Is it what we want? Is it

what we do? This is an example of how we

    look to reinvent the Chamber.

The Chamber offers many different pro-

grams to meet the diverse needs, wants and

schedules of its membership. We have the

morning Rise Up! Cadillac, the lunchtime

programs like the Lecture Luncheon Series,

    the Leadership Learning Series. Annual

events like the Briefcase Open Golf Outing,

    the Governors Breakfast, the Greater

Cadillac Area Business Expo, the Annual

Meeting and Awards Dinner, ... just to name

a few! The Chamber reviews the success and

challenges of each program to determine

how to make it run smoother, how to makeit better, how to make it more relevant and

therefore more valuable for the member-

ship. We tweak almost every program

every year based on what we hear from yo

the members. We value your opinions a

    thoughts and welcome the opportunity

hear what you have to say!

Technology changes at an ever increasi

speed. Computers from a couple of yea

ago are now obsolete, the software nee

to have more current versions, more co

munications are being done with hand h

devises than ever before. Social Media is

important marketing tool to get your m

sage out, to let your customers know whproducts and services that you have and

let them know about what is new with

your organization. That was not the cas

mere 10 years ago. We are so thankful f

the generosity of our members that ha

helped us to keep our costs down in ter

of some hardware. We have rolled out n

accounting software that is helping to ke

us current with the industry. We have n

Chamber focused software that is helpi

us to better promote our membership a

    allow additional opportunities to showca

the member to member benefits and help

market your businesses! All of this has ha

pen within the last three months.

At the same time the Chamber staff h

been out and about talking about the n

investment structure. In the past we we

mostly an employee count based dues org

nization. Based on the number of emplo

ees you had determined what your du

    were to the Chamber.

In an effort to reinvent itself and with t

help of Past Executive Director, Mick

Putman and Katy Huckle, we started t

process over four years ago. We had foc

groups to find out what we were doing rigand what we could improve on and what

    should focus on.

Even then we were reinventing ourselves. We talked to other chambers

around the country to find out how other chambers were working with

their memberships. And then we formed a committee to take a look at

all of the information about a year ago and decided that we should move

from an employee count dues organization to a membership investment

organization. You will now choose what level of investment you would

like to make in the Chamber. The different levels offer different oppor-

tunities for you to market your business and determine how active youchoose to be in the Chamber. We have received great feedback from the

rollout and we look forward to answering any questions that you might

have regarding the different levels. Another reinvention!

I want to thank our Chamber staff. Amanda Hamilton at the front desk,

Deb Gillies, our Leadership Guru/Accountant, Doreen Lanc, Director of

Membership, Doug DeYoung, VP of Government Relations and Bill Tencza,

the President of the Chamber. Our staff is great, knowledgeable, accessible

and willing to help in any way they can. It is such a pleasure to work with

people that have a caring and outgoing attitude for our Chamber.

I also want to thank Mike Hamner for leading the Chamber for the past

year. His passion for the Cadillac area is evident and we are grateful for

his leadership. Katy Huckle and Bill Cinco have each served six years on

the Chamber Board and we appreciate your dedication and input. The Chamber is poised to undertake 2013/2014 year with much opti-

mism and a new membership investment structure. We will continue to

process of reinventing ourselves to make sure that we meet the needs of

our membership. We thank you for your support.

Submitted by: brian bejcek, deb maxey,

mike morin and janine SkundaWhat an amazing journey these past

nine months have been. The class began in

September with a two-day opening retreat

and concluded with a full-day closing

    retreat in mid-May.

Through these retreats, we were able

to interact and determine each others

    strengths and weaknesses. This helped

    tremendously throughout this experience by

helping to mold us into an efficient team. As

fun and exciting as these events were, it was

nothing compared to the months in between.

We have been guests of many businesses in

Cadillac, toured areas throughout the city,

and had opportunities for field trips that

are reserved for this elite program. Through

    these amazing behind-the-scenes interac-

tions we have been able to get a better grasp

on the community we live and work in. This

new found knowledge helped to evolve our

perception(s) of the community and look

forward to a positive outlook for the Cadillac

area now and into the future. Our class proj-

ect DayBreak the Next Generation has

been a huge success. From the generous dona-

tions received from business, individuals, the

Cadillac Variety Show and the Leadership

Friends Dinner, we were able to complete both

phase one and phase two of the project by pro-

viding new vinyl siding, windows and roofs

for both the house and the garage. Were now

working on phase three, signage for the facil-

ity. The place looks great! We have received

feedback from DayBreak that their usage is

up 50% since our group took on this prect helping to inform the public about t

    wonderful opportunity available to o

    seniors.

We wish to sincerely thank all our su

porters, donors, presenters and past cla

alumni for all your support. We wou

also like to extend a special thank you

    Bigelow Exteriors. Their generosity a

fine craftsmanship has helped make our pr

ect successful. Through this class we ha

learned many things about our amazing co

munity and the giving people who reside he

Taking people out of their normal work en

Eileen Dunn, Aging Health Care Specialist MS,

    CMC presented The Sandwich Generation

The Sandwich Generation is a generation o

people who care or their aging parents while

supporting their own children, and working a ull

    time job.

The Sandwich Generation has three basic challenges to

deal with and try to fnd balance with in their lives:

Raising their children and being part of their lives

Assisting their aging parents and in-laws

Maintaining their own identity; leading their own liveand careers

Having time to enjoy their lives and the fnancial ability

to do so can be dramatically aected by care-giving

needs. Keeping the negative eects and stress level to a

minimum will take a lot o planning and organization.

Learning to ask or help when needed and knowing wher

to fnd it is imperative. Knowing and respecting ones own

    limitations is essential.

The recipient of the Spirit of

Community award doesnt like to besingled out for praise. And although shedefers to the many people who workwith her, this is a time to celebrate thespirit of Vickie Essenmachers leader-ship.

Nominator Rosemary Rokita, whobefriended Essenmacher through theFriends of the Cadillac Wexford PublicLibrary, said it hit her one day that

Vickie had to be nominated for Spirit ofCommunity award.

To me, it was so obvious that she was

eligible for this, explained Rokita. Iknow her passion for these statues andfor all that she does to make the commu-nity a better place to live and to welcome

visitors to our area. The statues are the bronze, life-size

Seward Johnson sculpture exhibitthat became a sensation last summerand returned this summer, thanks toEssenmachers efforts.

Vickie has made the sculpture exhib-it a point of pride among communitymembers who took pleasure in invitingfamily and friends to come visit and take

a walking tour, Rokita said. But beyond this exhibit, Essenmacher

has been involved in many activitiesover the years that uplift communityspirit.

She just loves Cadillac, said her hus-band Doug. God made her a personwho catches a vision and when she does, she doesnt let go.

Cadillac Area Chamber of CommercePresident Bill Tencza was quick to pointout that Essenmachers ideas are backedby an ability to get everyone on board.

She pulled together the cooperation ofthe City of Cadillac, she secured volun-teers to unload and place the statuesthroughout the lake front and down-town areas, and then she asked for andreceived financing from individuals inthe community. In 2013, she received thekey to the City of Cadillac from MayorBill Barnett on behalf of the Friends ofthe Library.

With her forward thinking and fun-

draising abilities, its a blessing thatEssenmacher does all she does as a vol-unteer when she could easily put herskills to use in corporate public rela-tions.

Instead, shes happy in her chosencareer of dental hygiene by day and agenerous volunteer in her free time.

    Another Essenmacher passion is

the Cadillac Garden Club, where slaunched the Holiday Home Tour in 20and has chaired the event ever since. Thpopular annual event attracts visitofrom around the state who come to tofour area homes decorated for the hodays by talented garden club membeEssenmacher is an active member of tFirst Baptist Church of Cadillac.

Seated dead center in front of the speak-ers platform at the Cadillac Area Chamberof Commerce Annual Meeting and AwardsDinner, Dan Minor shifted in his seat

when he saw Bruce Peacock approach thepodium.

The best friends met in 10th grade atCadillac High School. It was Peacock whonominated Minor for the OutstandingCitizen honor.

And when he addressed the crowd of200, Peacock looked straight at his buddyand joked for a moment. And then he gotdown to telling the success story of a self-made man who loves Cadillac.

He shared that Minor became a brotherto him when he moved in with Peacocks

family during his senior year. WhenPeacock headed off to college in Miami,Florida in 1982, Minor headed to the hotfoundry floor at Cadillac Casting. Six yearslater Peacock returned home and discov-ered they worked for the same companyin different cities. As they renewed theirbond he noticed that wherever they went, young adults approached them to thankMinor for coaching baseball and football.

Dan is a guy who has always workedwith the youth in our community, stat-ed Todd Bennington, BorgWarner plantmanager. Our community is important to

him.He has taken on Cadillac like he was

born and raised here, Peacock said. Hesin the community doing good things forpeople and most of it goes unnoticed.

But his efforts to save Cadillac Castingfrom extinction did not go unnoticed.

When Hayes Lemmerz declared bank-ruptcy in 2005, Minors passion for thefoundry and his vision for the future con-vinced investors to rescue the companythat was founded as Malleable Iron in1920.

Dan didnt want to see a business withthat local history wiped away, Peacockexplained. He sold the idea to investorswith his heart. It was all about his pas-sion.

Minor has risen to near-legendary statusin the industrial community with a resumethat includes 26 U.S. patents on metalcasting machining methods and process-es. He is the president and CEO of CadillacCasting Inc., a company that employs 400

and has in excess of $100 million in sales

annually to the automotive industry. Heholds the same titles at 3Ppoint Machine,Inc and ATD Engineering and Machine.

Since achieving business success, Minoris turning his attention to local charitablework.

Recently, he became a founding mem-ber of the Imagination Library to pro-vide books for the children of Wexford/Missaukee Counties.

When we got involved in launching the

Imagination Library, he became our fina

cial guy, explained Chamber PresideBill Tencza. We needed somebody to the bar and put the dollars behind it.

Dan stayed local, stated Peacock. never doubted that he would accompliwhat he put his mind to. He just went oand did it. He was driven, hes a self-maman. But those words fail in comparisto his passion, his caring and giving. Hwasnt born here but you wont find anone more dedicated to this community.

    Dedicated to the community
