Application should be made to the Professor of Naval Science at the NROTC college in which you are enrolled or intend to enroll.
Students enrolled in either NROTC program wjJJ be deferred from induction under the Selective Service Act, pending completion of their academic courses.
• U.S. Naval Academy Reservists on inactive duty have an
opportunity to win one of the 160 Naval Academy vacancies set aside for them each year. In addition, Reservists on active duty may compete for Academy appointments .
Winning an Academy appointment, however, takes some advance planning. As an example, to be eligible to enter next year's class, you must have been enrolled as a member of the Naval Reserve before 1 July 1962. You must complete and submit your application (NavPers 2451, Revised, November 1956), via your commanding officer, to the Chief of Naval Personnel before 1 Oct 1962.

(If the booklet cannot be obtained from any other SOU1'ce, however, you may write to the Chief of Naval Personnel (Attn; Pel's B66), Navy Department, Washington 25, D.C. The booklet is: Regulations Governing the Admission of Candidates in the U.S. Naval Academy as Midshipmen (Nav-Pers 15010). • Reserve Officer Candidate (ROC)

(College students who are not members of the Naval Reserve may also apply for enrollment in the ROC program; however, upon notification of selectio!lJ these candidates must enlist in the Naval Reserve.)
Each year a group of college students is selected for this training. If you are one of the fortunate few, you will attend two summer courses at Newport, R.I. These courses usually begin late in June and last approximately eight weeks.
If you successfully complete these sessions-and are otherwise qualifiedyou arc eligible for a Naval Reserve officer's commission in the Line, and, in limited numbers, in the Supply Corps and Civil Engineer Corps. These two ROC courses must be completed before you graduate or during the summer following graduation; you will then receive your ensign's commission with your degree.
Upon final selection for enrollment, you will be deferred from induction under Selective Service so long as you maintain satisfactory participation in Reserve training activities and meet other requirements for retention in the ROC program. Enrollment in this pro-gram does not, however, exem{lt you from Selective Service registration.
ROC program members are not required to carry any additional work in college as a result of the program; neither do they receive any financial support from the Navy during the school year. During both summer courses, however, ROCs receive the pay of the rate they hold in the Naval Reserve. Pay starts when you leave for summer school and continues until your return. During the summer sessions, you receive meals and quarters at no cost to you.
