Police Present Memorial Scholarship  This year's Craig Rath Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to a Robious Elementary School student. Chesterfield County Police Lt. Jay Thornton, Cpl. Mike Catron and Child Safety Officer Cathy Hornbarger surprised Hannah Elizabeth George with the award in front of her parents and peers during the school's fifth‐grade celebration. Hannah received a $250 check and a letter from Col. Thierry G. Dupuis, along with a certificate in memory of Officer Craig Rath.

Hannah is the 14th winner of the scholarship created to honor Rath, who was killed on May 27, 1999, as a result of a traffic crash while he was on duty. Rath was an officer with the department's Street Drug Enforcement Section.  Fifth‐grade students apply for the scholarship by submitting a letter to the chief of police. Applicants are asked to outline how they can keep their schools and communities safe with information they have learned through the Success Through Education and Proactive Policing program (STEPP), how students and police can partner to improve the quality of schools and neighborhoods and how fifth‐grade students can become winners in the fight against drugs.  Police Foundation Asks You to Save the Date

The Foundation maintains a special fund to support law enforcement personnel and their families to meet emergency needs.  Recipients’ needs include a death in the family, incapacitating injury or uncontrollable event.  This fund is expressly designed to meet the immediate, short‐term needs that arise before other resources are available.

The Chesterfield County Police Foundation, Inc. was organized in 2000 to provide support and benevolent assistance to the Chesterfield law enforcement community.  The Foundation is composed of public‐minded citizens who appreciate the unique demands and challenges made upon the men and women who ensure our safety.  The objective of the Foundation is to provide support for these men and women when our local government cannot.

The Foundation provides continuous support in a variety of areas including: short term financial educational opportunities for officers, recognition programs, various initiatives to provide items or services to officers to enhance the performance of their duties, public outreach and education programs.

The Chesterfield County Police Foundation will hold its annual golf tournament fundraiser on Thursday, October 10. The event will be held at 1 p.m. at the Birkdale Golf Course (8511 Royal Birkdale Dr, Chesterfield, VA 23832 ).

Local businesses can sponsor the event and Chesterfield residents can participate by contacting Tammy Wyrick at 751‐4632 or [email protected].

New Marked Police Vehicles

In June 2012, department employees were invited to submit ideas for new graphics for marked vehicles; the current design has been in use since the early 1980s. More than 20 designs were submitted, and a winner was ultimately selected by Col. Thierry Dupuis.   The winning design incorporates the department's badge and will give Chesterfield Police vehicles a sleek and modern look. As the department replaces vehicles in its fleet, the new vehicles will roll out with the new graphics package.

National and Local Headlines  It is important to remember that as a member of a neighborhood watch, your most important duty is to call the police if you see something suspicious and not put yourself in harms way by acting on your own.

A local tragedy that cost the life of a 7‐year‐old boy occurred on July 4.  An unknown person fired a shot into the air and on its return it struck the boy on the top of his head.  Please remember that the use of firearms in this manner is not only illegal, but very dangerous. Please go to http://www.chesterfield.gov/holidaytragedy/ for more information.  If you were firing a gun or you know someone who was firing a gun within a 5,000‐feet radius of Swift Creek Reservoir around the time of the incident, it is critical that you contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804‐748‐1251 or Crime Solvers at 804‐748‐0660 or www.crimesolvers.net.   Upcoming Events
