Three Owensboro businesses tapped as winners of

annual chamber awardsNearly 500 people were on hand

to see three local businesses earn the annual Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce Small Business and Entrepreneur Awards. At the monthly Rooster Booster event in June, John Fentress of Greener Owensboro Recycling was named winner of the Entrepreneur of the Year. On Time Fab, Inc. won Small Business of the Year (1-10 employees) honors, and Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline was the recipient of the Small Business of the Year (11+ employees) award.

Fentress of Greener Owensboro Recycling stated that his goal now is “to see a blue recycling bin at the end of everyone’s driveway.”

In addition to the presentation of the annual awards, the Chamber hosted the 9th annual Owensboro Has It! Expo

featuring 45 local businesses who are this year’s sponsors of the Chamber’s buy-local campaign.

Laura Alexander, Sales Manager at the Owensboro Convention Center shared how Owensboro Has It! benefitted her company, “The Owensboro Has It! event gave us the opportunity to unveil some of the details of the new Owensboro Convention Center that is scheduled to open in December 2013. We had several individuals walk up to us and share their excitement about the facility, as well as give us the contact information of a conference they attend each year that they want to bring to Owensboro.”

The Chamber would like to thank each of the Owensboro Has It! sponsors for their hard work and support of local commerce.

As the Director of Sales, Hayes is fully aware of the healthcare reform bill and the impact it will have on a business’s Anthem insure. He will be talking about how the Supreme Court’s decision will change the landscape of how healthcare is pur-chased and utilized in Kentucky.

Before joining Anthem, Hayes served as Regional Sales Direc-tor for Prudential. During his six years at Prudential, he was their leading sales person, and won

numerous company awards as the Regional Sales Director.

In 2008, Hayes published his first book entitled “When, God When?” It is a Christian inspira-tional motivational book that helps people deal with the challenges of everyday life.

Hayes is a graduate of Western Kentucky University, where he excelled in both athletics and aca-demics. He received a B.A. in Pub-lic Relations and Business Admin-istration. He and his family reside in Louisville, Kentucky.

Hayes will discuss healthcare reformQ&A

There will be a question and answer session with Mr. Hayes after the breakfast for insurance and healthcare professionals. Call the Chamber at 926-1860 for more details!

Why Wellness Exams are Important to your HealthFor most people, annual physicals have been replaced by periodic well-

ness exams based on age and general health. While it may be tempting to think of these visits as optional, they provide a unique opportunity for exchanging vital information with your doctor.

A physical exam gives your doctor a basis for comparison as your physi-cal condition changes with age – and it gives you the chance to ask ques-tions and build a relationship with your doctor. During your checkup, you should expect both conversational probing and physical screenings for vari-ous conditions, as well as more general tests for body mass index (MBI) and to spot hearing loss or visual impairment.

Together, these screenings represent a shift in focus from early diagnosis to prevention.1 Your doctor wants to identify high-risk behaviors to help you maintain wellness and avoid more serious health problems. As part of

this goal, he or she may also administer tetanus-diphtheria, influenza and pneumococcal immunizations.2 And if your family history or recent symp-toms send up any red flags, your doctor may recommend additional testing.

Making the most out of your medical examBecause doctor visits can be very short, it’s in your best interest to come

prepared. Patients who are active and involved in their own health care deci-sions get better results – so get involved!

You should expect your doctor to have reviewed your chart before your appointment, so he or she is aware of anything you’ve been treated for in the past and the medications you’re taking. It’s reasonable to expect your doctor to know who you are and to form some sort of relationship with you. Before your visit, write down important information about your family and medical history – especially any information that might have changed since your last visit. Make a list of all the medications you’re taking, along with specific dosage information. Also, write down any concerns you have about your health, or any new symptoms you’re experiencing.2

Your wellness visits are an important step toward maintaining your health, so do what it takes to make the most of them. Visit anthem.com for more ways to get healthy — and stay healthy.
