A LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF THE ASSOCIATION July 6th 2019
My Dear Friends,
The VINTAGE-ON-SEA week-end was a really tremendous occasion winning accolades from all quarters. We thank VISIT LINCS, its officers & Directors, for allocating funds raised through the Destination Business Improvement District to Sutton-on-Sea for this celebration. All agree that a similar event (similar but yet more splendid) should be staged next year.
Can our crowded Calendar take it? Of course! But it certainly is quite mind boggling when one begins to count all that is happening along our part of the coast. This issue of “TROVE” is increased by another four pages to try to include reports of what has happened recently & what‟s being planned. The draft version this month ran to 72 pages!!! Quite a job to reduce it … & WELL DONE all those who have sent us reports & notifications!
ABOVE: Martine & Joy vying with the vintage cars in Cromer Avenue (rivalling their colours, but not, NB their ages)
BELOW: The Pet Shop Boys, Paul & Malcolm
The Judging Day for IN BLOOM will have taken place by the time this issue is printed: but just as they say a Dog is not just for Christmas, the flowers are not just for adjudication day. The imagination & hard work of our gardening group will delight us & visitors to Sutton-on-Sea throughout the summer & beyond.
Then, coming up, we look forward to the78th Show of our Horticultural Society on Sunday 21st July, the Illuminations Day in Mablethorpe on Saturday July 27th, & the Sutton-on-Sea & Trusthorpe Carnival the following day. Then we have the (expanded!) Furlongs Festival on Wednesday August 21st. New this year is the YOUTH FEST with the Sutton element of it taking place on the promenade the Saturday in the middle of the Beach Mission fortnight: Saturday 10th August.
Add to these big events all the activity that goes on week by week which you can find out about in our weekly “WHAT‟S ON” publication. It now has 5 themed insets listing regular activities, with the addresses & contact numbers of the 45 (!) venues where they take place. You can pick up copies each week at Lammimans, the Library & Samantha‟s: but digital copies are e-mailed to members of the Residents Association, & copies are online at www.suttononsea.info
With all good wishes,
Adrian

On May 20th Cllr Carl Tebbutt was unanimously elected by the Town Council as our new Mayor. He moved from Loughborough to Mablethorpe in 1975, & here he has set up two businesses first serving as a Town Councillor in 1989. For nine years he was Chair of the Carnival Committee. In 2012 he resigned from the Council frustrated by the lack of progress being made. Despite the way Mablethorpe had, in his words, “punched above our weight”, he witnessed the Council “constantly going over old matters & difficulty in getting decisions through.” What was needed, he is quoted as having said
then, was “some foresight & investment into leisure facilities to give the place a kick start.” This is exactly what is on the table now with the pledge of major funding for the Station Sports Centre.
And in the new Council Carl has a strong team behind him: fresh new faces, supported by the experience of the long serving councillors Bernard Dobbs & Janet Cook. Also alongside Carl will be his consort Cllr Helen Parkhurst & the new Deputy Mayor Cllr Colin Matthews.
Carl‟s chosen charities will be the Meridale Youth Club & the Men‟s Shed. For 25 years he has been active on the soccer scene as a team manager, a club chairman & a referee. Having moved to Sutton-on-Sea in 2004 (where his home overlooks the playing field) Carl is now active in promoting walking football with a growing number of older members of the community enjoying taking part each Tuesday evening.
THE MAKING OF A MAYOR
Carl is very much looking forward to a busy mayoral year meeting many members of our community.
And if you have a feeling when you meet him that you have encountered him before, that‟s because as a side-line Carl plays extras in adverts & TV shows… depicting both Criminals ~ [RIGHT] & grandees ~ [FURTHER RIGHT]. Recently you might have spotted him in the acclaimed BBC costume drama “Victoria” ~ [LEFT]

The weekend began with the coffee morning on the Saturday, & ended with a good old-fashioned JUMBLE SALE on the Monday. Dee & Brian [LEFT] were kept busy in the kitchen, serving tea, coffee, cakes, sausage rolls & hot dogs: No “Holiday” for them, then: but plenty of “Banking” for our Treasurer Joyce who dreamt up the idea of Rummaging through the Jumble… We had a great attendance at both events &between them they raised over £500! The jumble sale was certainly well supported (well done Joyce for the idea!) & may be an event we repeat in the future, so hang on to your stuff!!
WHAT A WEEKEND!!
The end of May Bank Holiday weekend was certainly busy for the Committee! But here is the Vice Chair of the Association Gordon Moss, looking typically calm & relaxed as visitors begin to come in for our COFFEE MORNING!
Very many thanks to all those who helped & supported us.
Without you, we couldn‟t
do it.

Entries were judged on Friday 21 June by Dee Anderson (Chair of the Gardening Group), Sheila Pryke (Show Secretary, Horticultural Show) & Paul Scott (of the Sir Joseph Banks Society). Thank you to everyone who entered. By the time you read this judging for the East Midlands In Bloom will have taken place… but the Gardening Group will continue to work on all the garden areas it looks after. In Bloom results will be announced on Wednesday 18th September in Chesterfield when the Group hopes to learn that it has improved on the 157 points awarded in 2018.
A MIDSUMMER EVENING‟S VISION The Time & Tide Bell rang out marking the summer solstice as sunset on the longest day coincided fortuitously with high tide, It is certainly worth a visit! Go over the dunes at the Seal Sanctuary & stroll north along the sands for about ten minutes. If the tide is in you will hear its mellow tones activated by the waves …if the tide is out, stand by the bell for a photo!

SAVING LIVES AT SEA
On the evening of Saturday 29th June, crew from Mablethorpe RNLI lifeboat station launched their D class lifeboat in response to a report of people in trouble in the water.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in Mablethorpe acted swiftly in response to the report. The lifeboat was stood down en route, however, & the team assisted casualties on the beach alongside colleagues from the Coastguard & the East Midlands Ambulance Service.
A concerned parent had entered the water on hearing his children shouting for help. Unfortunately the parent was unable to swim & consequently found himself in difficulty. The parent & two young boys were treated on the beach for cuts & bruises. They had also swallowed water.
Writing on Social Media a family member said: „We are OK & unbelievably grateful for all the services that attended to us…‟
The RNLI launched its national drowning prevention campaign Respect the Water in May 2019, urging the public to take action & follow this potentially lifesaving advice if they find themselves in trouble in cold water:
▶ Fight your instinct to swim hard or to
thrash about – this can lead to breathing in water & drowning.
▶ Instead, relax & FLOAT on your back,
until you have gained control of your breathing.
Get on board & volunteer with our RNLI
Volunteers at Mablethorpe RNLI lifeboat station are inviting potential crew members to be part of their life saving team. They are looking for extra volunteers to join their inshore lifeboat team. The charity is hoping to attract people from all walks of life & new recruits don‟t need to have sea-going experience to get involved. Team players with good general fitness & the ability to learn new skills would be ideally suited to the role. Potential recruits must live or work within 6 miles of the station & be between 17 and 45 years of age. Mark Chambers, RNLI Volunteer Deputy Launching Authority, explains: „Only 10% of our new recruits come with professional maritime experience; our current lifeboat crew is testament to this as we have a carpenter, ice cream salesperson, metal fabricator to name but a few.‟ The RNLI provides comprehensive training to turn ordinary people into lifesavers & by volunteering, people will gain some fantastic experience, knowledge & skills. Around 95% of RNLI people are volunteers & they find the experience an extremely rewarding one. It‟s a great way to make new friends whilst helping to save lives at sea.
For more information, contact Mark on 07989 125 128, or Dale Chapman on 07834 924 834.

The state of BROADWAY has long been a cause of concern… to those driving along it, to those living along it with their floors shaking & pictures on the wall rattling as buses hit the bumps, & to those walking across it on the way to & from the High Street, the Surgery, the Library, & the Co-op. These photos show just a few of the hazards. With Cllr Colin Matthews I have raised these concerns & the letters overleaf suggest something might now be done.
~ (Cllr! Preb) Adrian
On the Saturday & Sunday with the help of the Lincoln YMCA we have the PARKOUR experience.
PARKOUR is the physical discipline of training to overcome any obstacle within one‟s path by
adapting one‟s movements to the environment. It focuses on safety, longevity, personal responsibility & self-improvement. It requires consistent, disciplined training with an emphasis on functional strength, physical conditioning, balance, creativity, fluidity, control, precision, spatial awareness & looking beyond the traditional use of objects. PARKOUR movements typically include running, jumping, vaulting, climbing, balancing & quadrupedal movement. Run, jump, vault &climb! Then also on the Sutton promenade the Residents Association is fortunate to be able to welcome an incredible Street Entertainer Syrovy who has circled the globe from Singapore, to Barbados & even the National Theatre. Unfortunately for him everyday objects conspire against him: newspapers become sails, there is a waterfall of cutlery, he dances with chairs & gets entangled in his clothes.
Rivalling the PARKOUR experts we will witness Syrovy ascending into sanity to find balance on a wobbling bouncing rope. If your Hero is Buster Keaton, Harpo Marx, Gene Kelly or the first Man on the Moon 50 years ago, Neil Armstrong, this spectacular show is for you!

We have got an order in for the hot box to fill all defects on the Broadway. It has been programmed by Kier & I am hopeful that it will be completed in the near future.
TWO
Dear Adrian
Thank you for your recent email about how necessary was the recent work on Masefield Drive & Church Park etc. Whilst I can understand people‟s frustrations with the surface dressing process, it does play a vital part in the authorities asset management strategy. Without it I'm afraid the condition of the roads would be far worse as it‟s a very good preventative maintenance treatment.
With regards to The Broadway this is a road that has been on our "radar" for some time & we are well aware of its condition. Because it's an old concrete road, the cost of traditional replacement techniques (as opposed to blacktop roads) has been the main issue, & therefore to date only temporary repairs have taken place.
However we are currently trialling a new technique on a similar road in the County, which if proves successful will mean my colleagues in the Surfacing and Patching Team will be able to programme The Broadway for some time in the future
Kind Regards
Dean
HANDY HINTS
For Gardeners:
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed & not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
When you have lost something:
The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement.
HOLIDAY SESSIONS PLANNED BY THE CHILDREN‟S CENTRE FOR THE COMING SUMMER:
All sessions will run Thursdays, 10am to noon aimed at children from 0 to 5 years old although older siblings up to the age of 8 will be welcome. We will be outdoors for much of the time, & families will need to remember sun hats & sun cream. Families are very welcome to bring along a picnic to have at the end of any of the sessions. A change of clothes/towels are advised.
At Sutton-on-Sea Children's Centre 25th July 10am to noon: “Have a Bubbletastic time at our „Sutton-on-Sea Summer Spectacular‟ – lots of bubble & water play, giant bubble tray, blow bubble „snakes‟, make your own bubble wand & lots more wibbly wobbly bubble fun!”
At Mablethorpe Promenade & Beach (chalet no. 30) above Queen‟s Park Paddling Pool 8th August 10am to noon: “Have a Sand-Sational time at our „Beach Party‟, splash in our mini „rock pool‟, look for shells, dig for „treasures‟ in the sand, paint pebbles, & build sandcastles, what else will we see & do?
At Sherwood Fields & Scout Hut: 29th August 10am to noon: “Come & join us for „Picnic in the Park‟, lots of outdoor fun, build a den, go on a bug hunt, make fairy doors, & get creative with natural art collages to take home. We may even build our very own obstacle course! Bring along a picnic too!
For Worriers: Never take life seriously. No-one gets out alive.
For those queuing up for a medical appointment at Marisco: Remember that health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.
For those who are stuck: The only difference between a rut & a grave is the depth.
