Last week I wrote about the rock shrimp, tcrustacean which turned out to be modelicious and valuable than anyone thought; aI recalled the expression, which I think

American in origin, God doesnt make junkTodays Gospel, the miracle of the feeding of tfive thousand, illustrates the same point indifferent way.

The scene is set in a deserted place and late in the day. The crowds whocome to Jesus for healing were tired and hungry so the disciples suggest sethem away so they can provide for themselves by buying food in the nevillages. Jesus tells them There is no need for them to go away; give some food yourselves. It looks like an impossible request but it requiresponse. In the equivalent passage in Saint Johns Gospel (6: 1-15) the auadds that this was a test of the disciples because He himself knew exactlyhe was going to do; in other words Jesus knew that the situation could onput right by his intervention, but he wanted to see if they would cooperate him - in the full sense of that word as working together.

The disciples are doubtful about the value of their contribution. They say: loaves and two fish are all we have here; or, in another translation, We nothing here but five loaves and a couple of fish. Indeed it was not muchfive small rolls (no giant Wonder bread in those days) and two pre-cookedwhich were probably not much bigger than sardines. But the important twas that they brought something to the Lord. That was the starting point omiracle.

Saint Augustine of Hippo, my own patron saint, once said:God who created you without you, will not save youwithout you. He was one of the greatest believers in thepower of Gods grace, but this was his way of saying that wemust cooperate with God. None of us should say we havenothing. Remember that God does not make junk. God has given us all and He wants us to use them. Thats why you should not be shy abvolunteering for ministry. If you offer what you feel to be your littleness, can strengthen it and make it fruitful in his service. As August moves us inew school and parish year, think about what you can bring to the Lord soHe can transform it with his grace and enable you to bring blessing to other
