We respectfully acknowledge the Turrbal people, as the traditional owners and caretakers of the land which is the Toowong Catholic Parish. We acknowledge the Elders, past and present. May we, too, be good stewards of this land. The Other Mary With August fast approaching, we are preparing to celebrate, with all the solemnity the Church can muster, two Marys, the mother of Jesus via her Assumption on August 15 th and, a week earlier, Mary of the Cross MacKillop, our first Australian saint. But sadly, there is the feast day of another Mary this week who is at least equally as important, but whose feast is likely to slip by with nary a mention. And I am referring to St Mary of Magdala or Mary Magdalene, whose Feast Day is this coming Monday. Why do I say that and suggest she should be placed in such exalted company? First and foremost because she was the first person to experience the Risen Christ! And one of the first commissions the risen Christ gave her was to tell Peter and the other disciples that he was risen. So, if it is true that the apostles were chosen to go forth and proclaim the resurrection of Jesus, then Mary of Magdala is truly the Apostle to the apostles. Of course, the male disciples do not believe her, possibly because she was cured by Jesus of a mental illness (7 demons, no less) and they probably put it down to her having another psychotic episode. But it was hardly by accident that Jesus chose to reveal himself first to Mary of Magdala. Luke tells us that Mary of Magdala and some other well-to-do women accompanied Jesus through most of his ministry and supported the mission out of their own resources (Luke 8/3). It is true that Mary of Magdala is often mentioned as one of a group of women, but there is only one passage where her name is not first on the list, and that is in the Gospel of John where he has Jesus’ mother and the apostle John placed at the foot of the cross but even there he has Mary of Magdala in their company. John’s account is of course at odds with that of the other Gospels which make no mention of his mother being present but have Mary Magdalene and the crew stay by Jesus through the crucifixion, albeit at a distance, while all the male disciples desert him. And then again, it is Mary of Magdala and her cohorts who lay out Jesus body for burial and are on their way back to the tomb with the spices to finish the task when they are confronted with the fact that he is not there but is risen. This is a highly significant fact because it was the role of family to lay out the body for burial. And, to top it all off, you have the beautiful episode in John’s Gospel where Jesus meets Mary at the tomb, but she mistakes him for the gardener, until he says her name, and there is something in the way he says her name that makes her realize it is Jesus (John 20/14-17). In an age when we may be concerned by the gender bias in our Church and even in our society, we don’t have to go far to find a model of courage, service and commitment for our edification. For it is there in Mary Magdalene, the Apostle to the apostles, faithful companion of Jesus and first witness to the Resurrection. 16th Sunday Ordinary 21st July 2019 Year C Holy Spirit Church Harriett Street, Auchenflower St Ignatius Church Kensington Terrace, Toowong PARISH WEEKDAY MASSES & RECONCILIATION *HOLY SPIRIT Auchenflower: 9am Mondays & Fridays, *ST IGNATIUS Toowong: 5.30pm Tuesdays & Wednesdays and 9.15am Thursdays. The Other Mary

With August fast approaching, we are preparing to celebrate, with all the solemnity the Church can muster, two Marys, the mother of Jesus via her Assumption on August 15th and, a week earlier, Mary of the Cross MacKillop, our first Australian saint. And one of the first commissions the risen Christ gave her was to tell Peter and the

other disciples that he was risen. So, if it is true that the apostles were chosen to go forth and proclaim the resurrection of Jesus, then Mary of Magdala is truly the Apostle to the apostles.

Of course, the male disciples do not believe her, possibly because she was cured by Jesus

of a mental illness (7 demons, no less) and they probably put it down to her having another psychotic episode.

John’s account is of course at odds with that of the other Gospels which make no mention

of his mother being present but have Mary Magdalene and the crew stay by Jesus through the crucifixion, albeit at a distance, while all the male disciples desert him.

And then again, it is Mary of Magdala and her cohorts who lay out Jesus body for burial

and are on their way back to the tomb with the spices to finish the task when they are confronted with the fact that he is not there but is risen. This is a highly significant fact because it was the role of family to lay out the body for burial.

And, to top it all off, you have the beautiful episode in John’s Gospel where Jesus meets

Mary at the tomb, but she mistakes him for the gardener, until he says her name, and there is something in the way he says her name that makes her realize it is Jesus (John 20/14-17).

In an age when we may be concerned by the gender bias in our Church and even in our

society, we don’t have to go far to find a model of courage, service and commitment for our edification. For it is there in Mary Magdalene, the Apostle to the apostles, faithful companion of Jesus and first witness to the Resurrection.
