Meet and Greets
People come to church in search of God and in search of a supportive
community. We are blessed to have many new families and individuals worship-ping with us lately. Since the Witness Team would like to help us all get to know each
other better so we can be that supportive community, they are inviting everyone to two special meet and greets between ser-vices on both July 28 and August 4 (come to one or come to
both). We’ll have activities to get to know each other better—and of course we’ll have some delicious snacks.
. . . to grow up into Christ.

Message from Pastor Sarah
Dear People
of God at St.
Barnabas,
This October
marks 15 years of
parish ministry
for me! This anni-
versary means I’ve preached
through the Revised
Common Lectionary
(RCL) 5 times now.
The RCL is a 3-year
cycle of weekly read-
ings used by Lutherans
and other denomina-
tions each Sunday. If
you attend worship at
a church that uses the
RCL every Sunday for 3 years
straight, you basically read
through the entire Bible. I like
following the RCL because I like
that we read through the whole
Bible, and I like that there’s a set
way to do it. If I picked the
scriptures I preach on all the
time, I’d only pick favorites and
not stretch myself to learn more
about the ones I’m not as famil-
iar with. At the same time, I find
the RCL doesn’t tell the whole
story of the Bible. It can be hard
to understand a reading from a
prophet, for example, when it’s
taken out of context. Over the
years, others have struggled with
the RCL, and in 2010, a group of
Bible professors came together
to create the Narrative
Lectionary, a 4-year cycle of
readings that are arranged
A couple months ago, in
just a few weeks, several
people who regularly attend
church commented to me
about how they struggle to
understand the Bible. Then I
had a conversation with
some colleagues who are
using the Narrative Lection-
ary, and they couldn’t say
enough good about it.
Finally, I decided it was time
to think about trying this at
St. Barnabas. The evening I
talked to the Worship Team
about it, the person who led
us in devotions talked about
why we should read the Old
Testament. I had to believe
this was the work of the
Holy Spirit to guide so many
to speak about how they’d
like to understand the Bible
better.
I’m excited about this
change, this new way to
study the Bible in worship. I
hope it will help us under-
stand Scripture better and
more deeply. If you have
any questions, please don’t
hesitate to ask!
Much Peace,
Pastor Sarah
in a narrative sequence to
help people see Scripture
as a cohesive and dynamic
story. For more infor-
mation, check out http://
www.workingpreacher.org/
narrative_faqs.aspx.
The Narrative Lectionary
begins the second week of
September
(aka, Rally
Day) with
stories from
the Old
Testament. In
mid-
December, as
we get closer
to Christmas,
we enter a Gospel (since
it’s a 4-year rotation, each
year features a different
Gospel) which we read
through Easter.
Through Pentecost, we
study the book of Acts (to
learn about the brand new
church) and other New
Testament writings. In the
summer, we choose from a
variety of sermon series
options (for example, a
series on the Psalms or the
Lord’s Prayer or one of the
letters of the New Testa-
ment).
In other words, the
Narrative Lectionary
helps us study the entire
Bible throughout the
year.
Synod Assembly 2019 Page 3
This year I was able to join
Pastor Sarah, Phyllis Blumke
and Allie Whyte in attending
an awesome Synod Assem-
bly! Bishop Clements and his
team kept things rolling
along with laughter and
ease. I was able to have a
vote on new council mem-
bers to the Synod. The key-
note speaker, Rev. Dr. Anna
Madden, was one who kept
you engaged during her
three sessions on talking
about “Walking Together for
the Sake of the World”. She
spoke about how every
moment in time affects eve-
ry other moment in time.
God is always in the moment
and has an agenda for how
the world will be. Even
though we cannot change
the past we can become
more aware of the past and
learn from it.
Pain, fear, hope and joy
are all connected and
learning tools. We need to
remember that we are ex-
amples of God, walking
with one another. Jesus
welcomes all people. God
loves us all.
The new mission statement
for the ELCA is Walking To-
gether, Loving Christ, Loving
All for the Sake of the World.
We need to walk together as
a church and the Northern
Illinois Synod will faithfully
make Christ relevant to a
diverse and changing world.
We need to learn from each
other and educate our lay
leaders. We need to be
equipped to share the Word
of Jesus Christ and we need
to Invite, Welcome and
Engage.
Friday night we worshiped in
a church that was filled with
Lutherans. I think every
seat was occupied. When
the first song was sung I
had goose bumps from the
sound of all these people
singing together and we
sounded GREAT! Saturday
afternoon we worshiped in
the assembly hall and I was
able to witness a new Pastor
be ordained. What a nice
experience.
This assembly is a great
opportunity to learn from
other congregations of what
works and doesn’t work for
each other. If you ever get
an opportunity to attend this
Assembly I would encourage
you to go and enjoy.
Yours in Christ,
Sally Skalany

Lunch and Learn meets on
the second Tuesday of the month from Noon to 2:00, and is open to ANYONE who’s available during that time and interested in learning about that month’s topic.
We’re taking July and August off, but mark your calendars now for September 10 when we’ll have guest author, Dawn Pruchniak speak to us about her book The Best Gift is the Last Gift: How to Organize Your Affairs to Protect Those You Love

Please keep us in
your prayers on the mission trip, July 15-21, as we walk with the people of Rockford. It’s only an hour away, but it will feel like a world away. And stay tuned for information coming soon for our next meetings.

Youth News As Youth Director, I learn so many wonderful lessons. In June, I learned: ♦ The Japanese word for Bible is Seisho, appropriately pronounced Say-Show.
♦ Sign language for “Jesus” involves touching the center of each palm; where the nail marks would be.
♦ Filling water balloons with paint is easier then it sounds. Throwing them at others is as fun as it sounds.
♦ A three-year-old repeating the same line from “This Little Light of Mine” over and over again is music to my ears.
♦ Playing the human version of Hungry, Hungry Hippos is as crazy as it sounds.
♦ Malawi is a landlocked country in Africa that receives help from the ELCA to feed its children.
We have neighbors all around the world. I hope the kids learned as much as I did! Fort Building & Fire Pit is the July event for middle school/high school students. Living Waters Lutheran Church has invited us to compete against their teams in a Fort Building Challenge. Assemble a team of friends and family. Think of a theme and gather supplies to create an amazing structure from card-board boxes. July 19th from 6-8:30 pm. Awards for the best creations! Denise Ulaszek, Youth Director

Spring is New
Life!
Lent begins
March 6th. We are
excited to learn
about new life! We
are all eagerly an-
ticipating the arri-
val of spring and
our butterflies this
A NOTE OF THANKS FROM
THE CARING TEAM
The St. Barnabas Caring Team wants to thank
all those who donated to the Lenten Fasting
collection. You donated $288.22
which enabled us to "buy" 6 chick-
ens, 1 rooster, and 2 pigs from
ELCA Good Gifts to support their
work. This money also provided for
two weeks of medical supplies
for health clinics in other countries where Lutheran
World Relief cares for those in need.
We would also like to thank the 12 members
of our congregation who donated their time
and "POTATO" talent to help the Northern
Illinois Food Bank pack 5lb.bags of
potatoes for the local food pantries.
These twelve people helped that Sat-
urday morning "POTATO TEAM" pack
7,240 lbs. of potatoes which provides
potatoes for 6,033 meals!
CPR/AED Training Because sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in adults in the US, we want to make sure as many people
as possible know CPR and how to use our AED machine, especially ushers, Christian ed teachers, and council members. The Cary Fire Department is now offering FREE CPR training to anyone in the Cary district and all businesses, so if you’re a member at St. Barnabas, you qualify! The Cary Fire Depart-ment offers CPR classes the first Wednesday of every month from 7-10pm. Please sign up with them at 400 Cary-Algonquin Road in Cary, at 847-639-2121, or at [email protected]. Then please share a copy of your training certificate with the office so we can keep a list of everyone who’s trained.
