Message from Pastor Sarah

Dear People

of God at St.

Barnabas,

Change! Chanc-

es are you say

that word and

feel an emo-

tion: fear or joy

or anger. It’s a loaded word. In

my personal life, I’ve been think-

ing about change because we’re

buying a new house, and in Au-

gust, we’ll be moving! We spent

many months looking at homes,

and we finally found one in Crys-

tal Lake, just off 31, that’s exact-

ly 11 minutes for both me and

my husband to our work. We

couldn’t ask for a better location,

and the house is great, too!

Not only will we be changing our

home, but our kids will be

changing schools. This is much

harder than moving homes

(though I have to say that pack-

ing and sorting is NOT an easy

thing!), and I’d really appreciate

your prayers as they transfer to

new schools.

I’ve also been thinking about

change in my professional life.

My office has been in a state of

continual change, but it’s almost

where I’ve been wanting it to be.

Many thanks to Linda Hamann

and Patti Hill for their excellent

painting skills, the Property

Team for moving furniture, and

Lori Gracely for helping me find

comfy chairs.

It was uncomfortable to wait for

the changes and then go through

some people feel more com-

fort and peace after chang-

es.

I wish I could tell you how

to handle change—both at

church and in your personal

lives. I’m not always great at

it myself. What helps me is

prayer, exercise, taking deep

breaths and remembering

that God is always with me,

and talking with others to

get a new perspective. I also

have to remember to apolo-

gize when I take out my

anxiety on other people!

I’m sure you’ll hear this

many times, but one of my

favorite Bible passages is

Philippians 4:4-7 where Paul

urges us to rejoice in all

circumstances, pray instead

of worry, and

let God’s

peace work in

our hearts

and minds.

This has

helped me

through many

changes, and I pray that it

helps you, too.

Maybe the most important

thing to remember is that

God’s love for us never

changes—except to grow

deeper. May you rest in that

knowledge and gain strength

from it as you face all kinds

of change.

Pastor Sarah

them, but the end result

has been so worth it.

Obviously taking a new

church has been a lot of

change, and now we’re

changing the change. For

instance, this month we’ll

try out Ministry Night for

the first time on August 21.

We have no idea how it will

be for all our ministry

teams to meet on the same

night, but we know it’s

worked in other churches,

and we hope that God will

similarly bless our efforts.

We’ve given ourselves 6

months to see how Ministry

Night works. If we find that

it doesn’t help us communi-

cate and coordinate our

work better, we can always

go back to how we used to

do things.

I’m sure you’ve noticed

other changes at church—

changes with worship, with

furniture, with people, with

programs. You may be wel-

coming some of these

changes, and you may be

dreading some of these

changes.

We want church to be a

place of comfort and peace.

Some people don’t feel

comfort and peace after the

sanctuary is rearranged or

the liturgy is changed, and

Confirmation classes will resume on Wednesday, August 29, with our parent-

student meeting from 7-8:30pm in the Family Life Center.

All parents and students are required to attend this meeting so we can work out all the pieces of this

important part of our spiritual journey. If you have a child going into 7th grade, please let the office know

by email that they will be attending. If you have any questions, please talk to Jenny Vogt

([email protected]), Laura Whyte ([email protected]), or Pastor Sarah

([email protected]).

Keep an eye out for our fall schedule of high school youth

group events coming soon! St. Barnabas, Bethany Lutheran (Crystal Lake), and Living Waters (Crystal Lake) will be joining forces to create one amazing youth group in the coming year. We’ll generally meet the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, 5-7:30pm, and rotate locations and leader-ship. Each church will be responsible for providing dinner when they host (Attention parents! We’ll need help with this.)

Middle School Lock About

Mark your calendars for Friday, September 21, from 7pm to 7am the next morning when all the Lutheran churches in McHen-ry County will join forces to put on a huge “lock about” for kids grades 6-8. We’ll

begin at Bethany Lutheran in Crystal Lake, play at the Sage YMCA, head to Grace Lutheran in

Woodstock for worship and pizza, and end up at Shepherd of the Hills in McHenry. The cost will be about $30 per person, and we’ll need adult chaperones. Friends are welcome to join!

More info coming soon…

MEMBERSHIP ROLLS

We’re in the process of finding out who still would like to be an official voting member at St. Barnabas and who no longer considers themselves members. This hasn’t been done in several years, and in order to give a true membership number, we’re sending letters to anyone who hasn’t been in worship and made a “contribution of

record” (that’s language from our constitution) in the last 2 years. If you talk to anyone who’s offended or confused by this effort, please let them know that we’re not trying to kick anyone out of church; we just want to be honest about our numbers. Thanks!

Endowment Workshop About 10 years ago, a hardwork-ing group put to-gether an endow-ment program for our church. An en-

dowment is a perpetual fund that accumu-lates gifts over time with the express pur-pose of using only the earned interest for special purposes outside of the general church budget. This allows the fund to grow over time and provides another way for contributions to the church without having the money spent on general church expenses. Currently we have just over $5,000 in that fund but would like to see it grow so that we could do some additional good within our congregation and our commu-nity.

On Sunday, August 26th, Tim Urness from the ELCA

Foundation will be at church to host a workshop between services explaining how we can grow our

endowment fund.
