While many of our community programs will be tak-ing a summer break, it is time to start making plans for the fall. Registration is open now for Figure Skat-ing and Hockey and details can be found inside. Brentwood welcomes Ena MacDonald as the new Figure Skating Coordinator this year. Many thanks to you, Ena.

Several successful and well-attended Jane’s Walks we held the first weekend of May in Brentwood. One was the Pop-Up Street Fair and Jane’s Walk held at St. Luke School. Please see the article in this issue of the Bugle. I wanted to add that the grand-prize win-ner of the bike was Brentwood resident Sarah, who appears in the photo on the cover of the July Bugle. Congratulations, Sarah!

A Brentwood resident sent a letter to the Bugle ask-ing for information regarding the external construc-tion at Northland Centre (formerly Dalbrent Mall). D’Arcy Brown, the Assistant Property Manager at En-right Management, told me that as of the beginning of June, equipment was being removed. With the exception of signage, exterior work was very close to being completed. Signage will be finished some-time this summer. A few tenants are still working with their marketing/design teams to ensure their sign is just right.

Super Soccer Saturday was held on June 23rd and was the familiar, fun-filled community event that we love. Many thanks to Brentwood Soccer Coor-dinator, Lindsey Rostoker, and the many volunteers who make the soccer season, as well as the big weekend of June 23rd, possible.

Please see some interesting articles this month—Lee Hunt interviews Brentwood Bee Keepers, Melis-sa Neville shares a delicious summer salad recipe, Louise McClelland tells us about the Jane’s Walk Bike Rodeo, and The Road Church invites everyone to a Stampede Breakfast!

I wish everyone a safe, warm, pleasant summer!

Outdoor Soccer Season has ended.

Another successful outdoor soccer season has come to an end. It is great to see the community of Brentwood come together and support our active kids. A special thank you to the BCA, and all the volunteer coaches, field liners, referee coordinator, equipment coordinators, tournament coordi-nators, and all the other parents who make spring soccer a success in Brentwood. Thank you also to the many young referees that officiated our games.

Now that the season has ended, it is important to ensure that all uniforms (U10 and up) and equipment are collect-ed. If you did not return your soccer items, please contact Jennifer at [email protected]. Failure to return equipment and uniforms will result in an increase in fees next year to cover the cost of the items.

If you have any interest in, or questions about, coordinat-ing next year’s soccer season, please contact me at [email protected].

Jane’s Walk 2018By Louise McClellandPhoto credits: Kayli McClelland (kaylimcclelland.ca)

On Saturday May 5th, 2018 a Pop-Up Street Fair and Jane’s Walk was hosted at St. Luke School in the Brent-wood community. This Street Fair provided an opportunity for students and commu-nity members to learn about street safety for all users through a va-riety of fun activities, including bike deco-rating, maintenance, tours, and obstacle

courses. With over 200 people in attendance the day was a huge success!

The Street Fair was a celebratory event for a project titled Safer Streets for All Users, which was initiated by Ever Active Schools/SHAPE and Urban Systems. This project worked with two Brentwood schools, St. Luke and Captain John Palliser, to identify key street safety concerns in their school zones: jaywalking and drivers parking in No Parking zones and too close to Stop/Yield signs were at the top of the list. Educational materials were created by the students around these behaviours in hopes of increasing overall knowledge and safety.

Students also helped to create a ‘Follow the Footsteps Campaign’, a painted footstep playway on the sidewalk connecting the two schools, to bring attention to local spaces (public library, recreation centre, etc.) as well as to engage residents in fun, healthy active transportation.

Most importantly, through work on this project, stu-dents learned that street safety is everyone’s responsi-bility. If everyone simply does what they are supposed to do, our streets will be safer for all users.

And we learned what a welcoming, enthusiastic com-munity Brentwood is. Thank you all!

Brentwood BeekeepersBy Lee Hunt

Do you recall a song with the refrain, “the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees” originally sung by Jewel Akens? That is the music repeating (an earwig?) in my head since I visited the Brisebois Drive home of hobby beekeepers Norman Donaldson and Helena Ekootak.

The four elements of the song all come together in Norman and Helena’s backyard – 100,000 honey bees in two hives, Mom, Dad, and 6 baby Red Breasted Nut-hatches in one nest plus a family of Northern Flickers in residence in another, scads of flowers, plus 16 fruit trees and shrubs.

Norman and Helena – a land surveyor and office ad-ministrator respectively in their daytime jobs – both be-came interested in bees and beekeeping so studied for a year on their own. Then in 2015, Norman assembled and painted a starter hive and their new passion/busi-ness really took off.

Currently, they have 2 hives in their yard, plus 4 hives at a cattle ranch in Cochrane. Each hive houses 50,000 Buckfast bees. With a daily range of about 3 kms, the Brisebois Bees forage on Nose Hill plus throughout Brentwood. The wide diversity of flowers in both areas contributes to more micronutrients for the bees. Each hive produces 20 to 30 litres of honey per season. In ad-dition to honey, Helena and Norman also produce bees-wax candles and lip balm.

Visitors are always welcome – especially on Sundays when Norman and Helena offer samples of different flavours of honey. Additional information is available at www.BriseboisBees.com

By now you are thinking – “How do the birds fit in here?” Well… Norman has built his own bird nests complete with interior cameras. The day I visited, I got to watch on the TV monitor as the mother Red Breasted Nuthatch fed her 6 fledglings in one nest, while the mother North-ern Flicker was busy keeping up with the dietary needs of her 9 babies in the other!

There is so much to see at Brisebois Bees. My thanks to Norman and Helena for their passion for Nature plus their willingness to share that enthusiasm with others. As a result, we can all keep singing, “the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees” right here in Brent-wood!

DINNER IS ON THE TABLE

By Melissa Neville

I hope you enjoyed my husband’s pancakes and my little guy’s taco seasoning. It was a wonderful surprise when they both offered to write the column for me. I am truly blessed to have them.

Summer is upon us, and since I am writing this col-umn a month ahead of time, I have no idea if the corn season will start early this year. I suspect the early warm weather we are seeing in May will continue, and if we get some good rain in June, we should (fin-gers crossed) have an early and long corn season. I LOVE corn on the cob! I remember being a kid and eating as much corn as I could get my hands on. Now I am older and wiser, but still appreciate a good cob of corn as much as, if not more than, my younger self. I always get excited when the first “Corn Sold Here” signs pop up. I restrain myself and buy only a dozen. After all, the stands are usually around all weekend, so I can go back and get more. Michael barbeques the corn, which took me by surprise at first, because I grew up in a household that boiled corn. Try the barbeque method this summer—it makes awesome corn.

I love barbeque corn with butter and salt and pep-per, chili lime butter or cheese. The options are end-less and all of them are delicious. Sometimes we cook extra and make corn, tomato and avocado salad. The lime dressing gives it a little tartness that mingles well with the creaminess of the avocado and the sweet-ness of the corn. I hope that you and your family en-joy the summer months and lots and lots of corn.

Corn, Tomato and Avocado SaladIngredients:•1 ear corn (husk and silk removed; shank cut or broken off)•2 pints cherry, grape, or pear tomatoes, halved (or quar-

tered if large)•1 avocado, halved, pitted, peeled, and diced•2 scallions, thinly sliced•2 tablespoons fresh lime juice•1 tablespoon vegetable oil, such as safflower•½ can of black beans•Coarse salt and ground pepper

Directions for Barbeque Cooking Method:Preheat your barbeque to approximately 400ºF.

Drizzle a little vegetable oil over cob making sure rub the oil over the whole cob

Roast the corn on the barbeque turning a ¼ turn every 3 to 4 minutes until the corn has gone from a pale yellow to a darker yellow. If some of the kernels turn dark brown to black during the roasting it is perfectly alright.

Stand the roasted ear of corn in a large wide bowl. With a sharp knife, carefully slice downward to release the ker-nels. Discard cob. Add tomatoes, avocado, black beans, scallions, lime juice, and oil to bowl. Season with salt and pepper and toss gently to combine.

DEVELOPMENT AND TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE (DTC)

By Cynthia Sim

Instant summer! As the month of May draws to a close, we are anticipating that this will be the hottest May ever recorded in Calgary. After a long and bitterly cold win-ter, we appear to have passed from the last cold days of winter in April to a brief spring (possibly lasting a day or two) and then quickly moved to unseasonably warm temperatures with little associated rainfall. However, thanks in large part to the abundant snowfall through the winter, there is a generous amount of moisture in the ground and many of the flowering perennial plants at the community garden are rapidly coming into bloom. The cherry bushes and apple trees were initially slow to bud, but are now full of flowers (see photo). Un-fortunately, the winter does appear to have taken a toll of some of our bushes, including the beautiful potentilla which is struggling to survive. Weather is always a topic for discussion when the gardeners get together!

We had our annual spring cleanup day on Saturday, May 12th and had a record turnout of thirty-one gardeners, including some spouses and assorted children. At final count, we are welcoming seven new gardeners to our little group this year. The cleanup was a hot morning’s work for everyone, but by mid-day, the compost had been turned and screened, the quack grass removal from the fence line was completed (thanks to the Sir Winston Churchill Earth Club) and the garden was look-ing tidy and attractive.

Amending the soil in the perimeter beds has been an ongoing project for the garden, so we were pleased to be able to access the municipal compost from the green bin program. However, because the volume allowed per vehicle was quite small and would not have met our gar-den’s needs, we were extremely fortunate to be given a donation of a truckload of compost by Rik Gray, who has been involved with the garden since its inception. The compost was delivered on cleanup day and generous amounts were distributed around the perimeter and on many of the raised garden beds. Thank you, Rik!

What makes Brentwood great?Several things make Brentwood a great community—the residents, transportation patterns, access to public transit plus available parks/greenspace and other fa-cilities. A high proportion of single and multiple family owners and long-time renter-occupied homes in which the owner/resident families demonstrate a pride of property ownership, conform to community standards for property maintenance and upkeep, participate in community life and who value their relationships with their neighbours. Brentwood is a diverse community in all respects and our proximity to the University ensures that we reflect a diverse but commonly discerning de-mographic. Brentwood is, in general, a destination and not a conduit to other places. The community is well served by Calgary Transit and Access Calgary. Many am-bulatory residents who commute by C-train walk to the station, especially in good weather.

The community has many parks, civic sports fields and green spaces. The redevelopment of Blakiston Park and the amenities it provides to individuals and families, especially those living in the new high-density Transit Oriented Developments near the Brentwood station is a good example. Nose Hill Park and its associated path-ways along John Laurie Blvd. provide a vast and attrac-tive area for residents and their pets.

Brentwood has a long history of working constructively with the City as well as developers and renovators. To-gether, we have achieved civic development goals like densification and transit-oriented development. Resi-dents contributed to a long and consultative process to develop a plan for the transit-oriented development of the area close to the C-train station. That plan was de-veloped with a long-term goal that is not only focused on station area plan, but which also has implications for the remainder of the community. Nothing compares with the level of consultation and consensus that is em-bodied in the Brentwood Station Area Plan and there is a firm requirement that responsible developments should conform to that plan.

Explicit in the Station Area plan was the idea of focused development in areas that would facilitate transit use. The goal is to double the population density of the community but to reduce personal vehicular trips and ownership. Implicit in the Station Area plan was a plan to leave the remainder of the community, which contains many different types of small commercial and residen-

tial sites as is. The goal of this was to preserve commu-nity character and traffic use that would allow a number of options including aging in-place and various types of family housing that would ensure the continued use of our community schools and facilities. The jury may still be out, but the redevelopment of Brentwood as an up-scale neighbourhood close to amenities, services and recreational spaces seems to make good sense.

Sincerely,Kirk Osadetz, VP. BCA

Dr. E. W. Coffin ElementaryFun With CPAWSBy: Victoria Y, Sammy M, Ishan D, and Markus C

On April 6th and May 4th, the Grades 1 and 2 students at Dr. E.W. Coffin School worked with CPAWS (Canadian Parks and Wildlife Society). Their instructors, Stephanie and Vanessa, came to teach all the students about birds. It is amazing how important birds are to our environ-ment and other species.

Using games, drawing and many more fun activities, the students learned about the valuable contribu-tions birds make to our natural ecosystems. In one of the games, students created a “Home” using mats. You had to keep your “Home” safe by considering the birds’ habitat and predators. One student rejoiced, “I really enjoyed the games.”

The Grades 1 and 2 students have also been learning about the impact of humans on birds in our communi-ties. “I don’t like that people pollute and cut down trees because this takes away the homes of many birds,” stat-ed a Grade Two student who attended these activities.

For their final project, the Grades 1 and 2 students each chose a focus bird for their research. A focus bird is a bird that the students want to learn more about. After learning about these birds, the students will go to Nose Hill Park to hopefully see and learn more about their focus birds.

If you would like to see some of the amazing birds the students are focusing on, please visit: https://ebird.org/home.

Park Clean-UpsThank you to the volunteers who initiate clean-ups on Nose Hill, in other parks or green spaces, and in com-munities. The City offers free TLC kits for groups of ten, containing garbage bags, gloves and hand sanitizers as well as instructions. There are some tips for before, dur-ing and after your cleanup. Share your story on Twitter-- #yyccleans.

Park InterpretersSeasonal Park Interpreters must be at least 18 years of age. Volunteers are needed from June to October and the commitment is 6 shifts per season. Sanctuary Hosts work year-round when positions are available. Other Green Ini-tiatives promote Parks programs. Training, supplies, and support are provided. A screening policy for volunteers joining the Parks Environmental Education team may also include police information checks. Hosts will learn about nature and cultural history, meet others, represent the City and foster environmental stewardship.

PesticidesHealth Canada registers pesticides used in Canada. Federal and Provincial laws, plus City environmental policies dictate general pesticide use and public noti-fication. The City’s Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) has a Subcommittee which reviews the process and makes annual recommendations to EAC.

Since the early 1990s, concerns have been raised by environmental stakeholders about spraying pesticides. Through a task force created to study pesticide use, City Council approved a plan in 1998, which applies to all civic land, including natural environment parks such as Nose Hill.

Park ProtectionRepresentative and viable habitat types will be protect-ed so that environmental impact and safety are consid-erations. There are restrictions on human use in some areas of Nose Hill, such as the escarpment and aspen woods, to protect the native plants and wildlife. Accord-ing to the 1994 Natural Area Management Plan, where recreational use and significant habitats conflict, pro-tection of the natural resource will come first.

North West Warriors Hockey2018 Registration Opens June 1stSpring seems to be all around us, and we are more than happy to welcome it! But before we close the door on winter, please mark your calendar for hockey registration. Online registration for the 2018-2019 season will be available June 1 – August 15, at www.nwwarriorshockey.com

Hockey is a great sport for the whole family. Games and prac-tices become social events for friends and families during the chilly months. It is also a great way to keep kids active and healthy, and there is always room for Dad and Mom to get out there and help too!

Our Timbits/Tyke program (Age 5-6) is well known and has a great reputation for fun and skill development. In fact, CHA/NWW was one of the first in Calgary with a comprehensive pro-gram for this age group. What makes it even more appealing is that we have set days and times that are easy to schedule around. Even Sidney Crosby was once a Timbit!

Our hockey association has some of the lowest registration fees in the city. Our program is open to girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 20 years. Our goal is to offer our kids the op-portunity to play hockey in a fun, positive learning environ-

ment. We want them to leave the ice at the end of the season looking forward to the next one.

This season we are once again offering a House League pro-gram for Novice, Atom and Peewee. This is a specialized pro-gram that will run from early September to mid-March. Players will take part in an evaluation process in order to balance the teams. Some key differences between House League and Community are:•Two sheets of ice a week: One Practice, One Game•All ice used will be in the NW only – no travelling for games•No exhibition games•No tournaments•No playoffs (Atom only)•Limited space•More information can be found on our website

Financial assistance is available through the Calgary Flames “Even Strength” Program & Kidsport Calgary (which covers registration fees), and we are also partnered with the Comrie’s Sports Equipment Bank (which covers equipment) These pro-grams are subject to eligibility requirements.

Complete registration information and fees can be found on our website (www.nwwarriorshockey.com), you can also con-tact Fiona at [email protected] if you have any fur-ther questions.

We look forward to seeing you all out on the ice in September! Have a safe and warm summer,

Westwood Hockey & the Northwest Warriors!
