Pastor’s Corner We know that all things work together
for good for those who love God, who
are called according to his purpose. –
Romans 8:28 (Epistle reading for July
27)
Recently I spent an afternoon reviewing St. Francis’
Church Register. It’s the book in which every worship
service at St. Francis’ – Holy Eucharist, Morning Prayer,
wedding, funeral, pet blessing -- has been recorded since
this congregation began in 1990. Using the Church Regis-
ter I was able to calculate the Average Sunday Attendance
(ASA) at St. Francis’ each year. We’ve included a chart in
this edition of the Chalice that shows the ASA from 1990
to today.
When I plotted attendance, I discovered that for 15 out
of our 24 years St. Francis’ ASA has hovered in the 50s.
When attendance has climbed toward 60, the congrega-
tion has shrunk, resulting in an ASA well below 60 for a
period of years. There’s an invisible barrier, a “glass ceil-
ing,” that St. Francis’ hasn’t been able to break through:
an ASA greater than 59. (See page 3)
We are rapidly approaching an ASA of 59. We have
the opportunity to break St. Francis’ pattern of shrinking
once this milestone is reached. We can, with God’s help,
break through our glass ceiling and achieve an ASA of 60
and beyond.
Accommodating this growth will require us to hold

Upcoming Events Women’s Group @ Sylvia Ahmad’s
Tuesday, July 1st -- That’s soon!
The Women’s Group will have their July get-together at Judy Cody’s house on
Tuesday evening, July 1st. The group is purely social and its form is very loose.
Membership is also purely social and attendance is fluid: all adult female women of
the parish and any of their adult female friends are welcome to enjoy one another’s
company in an evening of talking and fun. If you want to bring a small snack, do. If
you don’t, don’t. Supper is over, the dishes done (maybe) and it’s time to visit with
your friends.
Bring yourself or carpool with a friend. 7:00 p.m., Sylvia Ahmad’s house, between
Six Flags and Queeney Park. It’s that simple.
Questions? Call Sylvia @ 314-550-3773 cell or Laura Hoffner.
St. Francis’ Book Group
Our book is titled Mr. Pip, and is a coming-of -age story of a young Black girl in
New Guinea as war breaks out. She struggles to come to terms with war, poverty
and her own role in society. As she works, the character of Pip in Charles Dickens’
Great Expectations is one of her primary role models.
Mr. Pip by Lloyd Jones
It’s available both from Amazon ( www.amazon.com ) and from the St. Louis
County Library( www.slcl.org).
Discussion @ Parish House, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 10th.
Celebrate the Fourth of July!
All members of St. Francis’ Church and their families and friends are invited to
join Sue and John Schmidt for their celebration of the 4th, a true moveable feast!
The celebration will start at the Schmidt’s any time after 4:30
with hot dogs and fixins’. The Schmidt’s will also provide soda,
iced tea and lemonade. Plan to bring a dish to share and any other
kind of a drink you want to have.
About 6:30, the party will load up and drive into Eureka in time
to celebrate by singing and dancing with the band. Fireworks
(your tax dollars at work or actually at play!) begin about 9:00. What a great way to
celebrate this day!
Key Points: Bring Lawn chair, a dish to share, specialty drinks
Remember: You and yours are welcome to any or all parts of this moveable feast.
Join us when it’s best for you; leave when you’re ready.
Questions? Ask Sue or John Schmidt.

Concerts on Central – July 18
Please join us for “Concerts on Central” on Friday, July 18. We’ll gather at the
parish house at 6:30 p.m. and we’ll end by 8:15 p.m. We’ll walk half a block, set up
a table and poster, and offer free temporary tattoos. It’s easy and enjoyable. You can
contact Sally Hader for more information.
Youth Group Events
The movie “Hunger Games - Catching Fire” will be shown on
the lawn of Eureka City Hall on Friday, July 11 at 8:30 p.m. This is
offered by Eureka Parks and Recreation. The movie is free; popcorn
and lemonade are also provided. Bring lawn chairs or blankets.
The Youth Group meets at Pastor Sally’s, 2575 Sunrise
Dr. in Eureka, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16. We’ll discuss the
back-to-school shoes poster and watch a movie, “Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” All teens are welcome.
Want to Watch the Hummingbirds?
What if They Want to Watch Us?!
Joe and Donna Bernert, whose quiet porch and careful, generous bird feeding invite
hummingbirds to their home every evening, have invited us to share in this wonder-
ful sight of nature, up-close and personal.
Come for supper; bring a dish to share. We’ll socialize, schmooze, and snarf. Then
those who are willing to be very, very, quiet will go out to porch and wait for the
hummingbird dinner show.

Cook zucchini until tender, drain and set aside. Fry meat and onions until meat is
brown and onions are tender; drain fat. Add next 8 ingredients and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered 10 minutes or until reduced to 2 cups.
In small bowl slightly beat egg. Add cottage cheese, half of shredded cheese and
flour.

two worship services on Sunday. It will change the community, since we’ll no
longer all be together at one service on Sunday morning. We are freeing up space for
new people. And they will join us both at the new service and at our existing one.
This is a big change, but we are assured that “all things work together for good for
those who love God.” We have Jesus leading us and one another to travel with. What
more do we need?

Eureka Food
Pantry Needs
Our community children are now
on summer vacation from school.
Many local kids benefit by the
nourishing breakfasts and/or
lunches they receive on a needs
basis in their schools.
Please keep this in mind in regard
to donations to the Food Pantry
wagon. For some families to fill
in these meals there is a greater
demand on items supplied
monthly for our local families
who are in need.
Basics such as peanut butter,
jelly, canned fruits, pasta &
sauce, canned meats, canned
pasta meals, mac & cheese, cere-
als, etc. will be so greatly appre-
ciated to help through the sum-
mer months. Thank you for your
ongoing generosity to our
neighbors.
Remember the Food Pantry when
you are shopping! Combine two
ministries in one swoop! Use
your Schnucks E-Scrip Card
while shopping for the Food
Pantry!

June 22 Bishop’s Committee Highlights
Opening Business:
Opening prayer; joys and concerns
Judy Cody moved that we accept the minutes from the May 18 meeting. Joe
O’Reilly seconded. The motion passed.
Treasurer’s Report
Suzanne reported a surge in pledge income due to someone paying ahead. This is
expected to be a temporary situation.
The finance committee will meet to begin discussing the budget for 2015. Sally
will distribute to the BC a copy of the budget information.
Bob Champlin moved that we approve the May financial results pending audit. Judy
Cody seconded. The motion passed.
Vicar’s Report
Sally will be out of town at the CREDO conference part of this week.
A copier was delivered, but it required 220 volts. A new copier is coming this Fri-
day, but it does not staple.
Senior Warden Jim Bowlin and The Reverend Sally Weaver signed the parish
house lease this week after approval from the Diocese. The lease is for three years
with a 3% annual increase.
An online survey about the possibility of adding a worship service is available
for parishioners to complete pending BC approval. After discussion, the committee
would like the survey to go out today.
Jackie Selle reported that an abstract has been submitted to the Diocese for fund-
ing for the tutoring program. The diocesan committee will make preliminary deci-
sions about funding by mid-July.
Kevin Broom reviewed our discussion from our last meeting and reminded us of
the purpose for a vision statement. We discussed more ideas for a vision statement
and finalized the wording of the vision statement. Kevin then asked us to consider
how we want to word our mission statement concerning the following questions:
who, what, when, where, why, and how?
Senior Warden’s Report
Jim Bowlin had nothing to report.
Closing Business
We reviewed the importance of providing opportunities for everyone to partici-
pate in activities throughout the week so that if we do add an additional service we
can continue to maintain the feeling of community.
Closing prayer and temperature check.
Next meeting: Our next meeting is July 20. Joe O’Reilly will provide food.

Consider This…
A few years back I was walking in the botanical gardens with a friend
and mentor. She was not only in inspired leader in education, but a mas-
ter gardener. I was explaining my frustration at my garden since I had lovingly
planted all my annuals and perennials two full weeks ago and not everything was
blooming yet. “Oh, Kathleen,” she cried, “you are such an immature gardener! You
want everything at once! First you plan for the year, then you plant and then you
wait until the flowers bloom, each in its own time.” This name-calling from a dear
friend did not hurt my feelings. I laughed and said, “But I want them to bloom all
summer long. All of them. Until it snows.”
I have, living out here, matured somewhat as a gardener and am patient with Mother
Nature’s flowering schedule. I can anticipate the Queen Anne’s Lace and rejoice in
its summer blooming. I can even wait forever for ripe tomatoes. I am not so patient
with the creatures I most need to cooperate with – other human beings.
This past few weeks, despite my extolling the benefits of cooperating with other
agencies who help feed the hungry in our neighborhood, I grew frustrated to the
point of exasperation with someone who was controlling my our garden plot at the
Y. St. Francis’ gardeners wanted to work, but were continually put off until the mas-
ter gardener spoke. When we did do something, we were criticized for not doing it
right. The harvesting crew decided to work exactly at the time I’m in my favorite
pool class. I was working myself into major tension, and it showed. This time,
though, I tried to use the lessons I’ve learned about working with creation and re-
member that humans are creatures too. So here are my nature lessons, applied to co-
operative gardening:
Listen. Don’t speak until you listen. Pastor Sally
Listen. Don’t speak until you listen. St. Benedict

Listen. What do the gardeners need from you? Jody, Garden Queen @ Y
Wait. Do your best and see what happens. Pastor Sally, Jody
Don’t get your knickers in a twist. Lots of Brits
We need to do this for several years until we Jody, Pastor Sally
get it down right. We’re just learning.
To everything there is a season Ecclesiastes, the Byrds
It’s simple. But God never promised easy Pastor Sally
So, with renewed determination not to be controlling about my our work at the gar-
den, I am back to extolling the virtues of cooperation. St. Francis’, even with an
ASA of 100, cannot do it all. By cooperating with other, local agencies, we can ex-
tend our help to:
Feed more hungry here in our community
Feed more hungry at Trinity Central West End
Feed more starving children through Project Peanut Butter
Clothe more bare feet through Shoeman Project
Provide fresh, safe water through Missouri/Lui Diocese partnerships and Shoe-
man
Bring the power of prayer to a really challenging cooperative project, the Soil
Health Partnership.
When we cooperate with God’s creation, when we care for ourselves and other crea-
tures, we make God’s heart sing. Is there any better reason?

Crafternoon Hiatus until September 10th
, 2014
Due to the delights of a surfeit of visiting grandchildren
and traveling families, and the pleasures of life at the lake,
the Wednesday Crafternooners will not meet for the rest of
the summer. Our meetings are usually from 12:45 – 2:30 on
Wednesdays at the Parish House. The fall semester might
bring us two new members who have wanted to come but are
FINALLY leaving the 9-5 work world and will be available!
All are welcome and encouraged to come!
Please remember that any season is the season to make
scarves for those who will need the warmth and comfort
come November when we collect and distribute them.
Tutoring by the Numbers
July is a Sabbath month for students and their teachers – and they deserve it!
Teaching for the volunteer tutors in St. Francis’ weekly program is no different in
some ways than it is for other K-12 teachers: it’s rewarding, it’s fun, and it’s chal-
lenging. This past year has been a major success, and leader Jackie Selle is looking
forward to an even busier, happier, more successful school
year. Our growth in this ministry has enabled us to write a di-
ocesan grant for electronics to help students and teachers work
with the most efficiency and effectiveness. Here are our parish
stats for 2013-2014.
Goal: 12 students
Achieved: 21 students served, 0 declined
Another look: 186.5 hours, 14 tutors

New Worship Service Survey
We need your input about when to add a new service on Sunday – 8 a.m., 5 p.m..
– and the order of events like Adult Forum and choir rehearsal. When you receive
the e-mail, please take the survey. It will only take a few minutes. Your voice mat-
ters. And, please, talk to Pastor Sally if you have any questions or concerns.
If you have not yet received the survey, please check your SPAM folder.
United Thank Offering
The Episcopal Church helps to fund its national and interna-
tional ministries through thank offerings of its members. All
over the nation, church members keep a familiar blue box in a
handy place and place coins in it, emptying pockets and giving
thanks for little blessings. These boxes are returned to parishes
at least once a year, the offerings collected and sent to the na-
tional Church.
This year at St. Francis’ Eureka we collected and donated
$101.18. If you need a fresh UTO box to add your gratitude
and your coins, check at the Parish House.

Treasurer’s Commentary May 2014
The surplus in the pledge line is from the paying ahead of a sizable pledge. I will
be meeting with Barbi Click on Friday, June 20 to review pledges to look for any
significant delays or pastoral concerns.
OTHER MATTERS FOR THE COMMITTEE:
The Finance Committee met on Tuesday, June 17 to review a very rough budget
draft for 2015 to discuss the amount to request for Diocesan support. Pastor Sally
will continue to work on the verbiage that accompanies the budget and request, and
it will be submitted prior to the due date of July 15.
Respectfully submitted,

Suzanne Jones, Treasurer
Altar Guild
Google’s dictionary defines a guild as: an association of people for mutual aid or
the pursuit of a common goal. The common goal of the people in an Altar Guild in
the Episcopal Church is to prepare the altar for weekly worship. Their work is so
important to the beauty and holiness of our services! In our parish, Jerry Smith and
the men and women who serve in the Altar Guild make sure that all the stuff (called
sacramentals) are in place, are the right ones for this liturgical season, are in the right
place for the priest to use in sequence. Then after the service is over, all of the sacra-
mentals are cleaned and carefully put away.
Setting the Eucharistic Table may seem intimidating, espe-
cially to people who come from a tradition that uses only a
Bible and a pulpit for worship. Not to worry! Jerry has pic-
tures, directions, and tutorials to support new members until
they feel at home with the words, shapes, colors, and sacra-
mentals that make our worship so glorious.
If you can help in this ministry or just want to ask about it,
please see Jerry Smith or Pastor Sally. It’s a quiet ministry
and very rewarding!
