We were still grieving the loss of our Brother Myers Kurtz when we lost our Brother James “Jim” Doucett. Jim was a Master Mason for forty -five years, a Past Master of his South Carolina Lodge, and a member of our Lodge for twelve years. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and a very active member of the Fernandina Beach Shrine Club. Until his recent illness, I don’t recall any meeting or any other Amelia Lodge or Shrine club event when Jim was not present and giving account of himself. He retired from the U.S. Navy after twenty -two years as a Chief Petty Officer, and then he embarked on a law enforcement career from which he retired twenty -one years later, but he still wasn’t tired. He continued working for his church and volunteering in the community almost to the end of his days. He will be missed at the Fernandina Beach Optimist Club and the American Legion, and we will all miss seeing him out in front of some Supermarket ringing his  bell for the Salv ation Army in the we eks before Chri stmas. I’m proud to sa y that Myers Kurtz and Jim Doucett were my Brothers. On June 11 th , we had a great family dinner in the Lodge. Before we sat down to eat; I had the pleasure of pre- senting Brother Don Piper with a certificate and lapel pin commemorating his fifty years as a Master Mason. We were  pleased that several membe rs of Brother Piper’s family were able to be with us for the presentation; that alway s adds so much to the occasion.  On June 25th, Darrin Wayne Silvers was initiated as an Entered Apprentice Mason at Oceanway Lodge No. 279 in Jacksonville as a courtesy to our Lodge. Welcome Brother Silvers, we are pleased to have you with us. And we sincerely appreciate the courtesy of Oceanway Lodge helping us to begin Brother Silvers on his journey in Freemason- ry. We have accepted the petition of Mr. Michael Farrell Castleberry of Fernandina Beach to take the three de- grees, and it is being processed through the various steps of the system. We anticipate that this petition will be consid- ered by the Craft in late July or early August. At this time, it is the only petition that we have pending.  The newly appointed District Deputy Grand Master of the 11 th Masonic District will visit Amelia Lodge at our stated communication on July 23 rd . The Broken Column…

Brother James Thomas Doucett, age 76, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2013, in Fernandina Beach.

Brother Doucett was Raised in Hammerton Lodge No. 332, North Charleston, South Carolina, on April 30, 1968.He thereafter transferred his membership to Amelia Lodge No. 47 on September 25, 2001, and he remained a faith-ful Brother Mason continuously since that day. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite bodies and Morocco

Shrine. Masonic funeral services under the direction of Brother Ed O’Rourke were conducted following the religious service onJune 6, 2013. More than thirty Brother Masons attended.

In the past two months we have lost two of our most active and distinguished members, Brother Myers Kurtz and Broth-

er Jim Doucett. On June 11, 2013, the Craft agreed to hold the last two seats in the upper row on the south side of the Lodge re-

served for the balance of this year in memory of our departed Brothers who will always be with us in spirit .

Brothers, do not forget to send in your 2013 dues payment to the Secretary!

Publication of Proposed Resolution Slated for Vote By The Lodge

Reinstatement after suspension nonpayment of dues…

On May 29, 2013, the Grand Master issued an Executive Order allowing the Particular Lodges to waive prior years’ duesand reinstate a Brother who has been suspended for nonpayment of dues upon payment of only the current year dues. Particular

Lodges that wish to adopt this policy must pass an enabling Resolution to do so.

The Resolution – reprinted below – was read at our stated communication on June 25, 2013. As this issue has come before

the Craft in previous years and proven to be controversial, the Worshipful Master ordered action to be deferred until our statedcommunication on July 9, 2013, and the proposed Resolution to be published in The Trestleboard , so that every member of the

Lodge might have an opportunity to be present and voice his opinion on the issue before a vote of the Craft is taken.

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, in the spirit of Masonic Brotherhood, it is the desire of Amelia Lodge No. 47 F. & A.M. to reinstate those Brothers

who have been suspended for Nonpayment of Dues; and

WHEREAS, M:. W:. Danny R. Griffith, Grand Master of Masons in Florida, has issued Executive Order No. 3, waiving the GrandLodge per capita tax for the year of suspension and the year 2013 for a Brother who is restored to membership by paying his cur-rent year’s dues; and

WHEREAS, it is the desire of this Lodge to waive past dues and reinstatement fees for a Brother who is reinstated under this Exec-utive Order.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that until rescinded by this Lodge or until March 31, 2014, whichever occurs earlier, a Brother

of this Lodge who has been suspended for Nonpayment of Dues may be restored to membership by applying for reinstatement and being elected according to the provisions of Regulation 27.13 of the Digest of Masonic Law of Florida, and this Lodge agrees to

waive past dues, and any By-Law provisions in conflict are hereby set aside until the above mentioned date.
