President’s Message It is a great honor and a privilege to serve as this year’s President of the Birmingham Rose Society. I will endeavor in this, our 60 th year to develop programs and events that will serve to further strengthen our society and will raise awareness on the cultivation of our National Floral Emblem. This month, we conclude our Summer Garden Tours with a visit to Brown’s Cut Flower Farm. Our very own Becky Henderson grows a very nice selection of flowers that are great companions in the rose garden. I am told her Dalia’s are in their glory! It will be an interesting tour and I hope you come out and join us. You’ll find the details and directions elsewhere in this newsletter. I hope you will make an effort to attend our August Meeting. It is our annual “pot luck” meal and during the evening, we will install our new Officers and I will present a few ideas/initiatives for the coming year. As I have said before, I believe that we exist for two reasons; People & Roses. One without the other is not much of a Rose Society. We each possess a unique level of knowledge and expertise about roses and I am so proud to be a part of an organization whose members are so willing to share what they know while also pursuing a “more excellent way” to cultivate and exhibit the rose. Our foray into social media (website, Facebook & Twitter) has taught me that there is a multitude of people, who not only love roses, but they are also eager for information on growing roses. We must stand ready willing and able to reach out online and in person. It is sure to be an exciting year, I hope you will get involved in our activities, share your love of roses and together we will continue building on the foundation set by those who came before us. President’s Message

It is a great honor and a privilege to serve as

this year’s President of the Birmingham Rose

Society. I will endeavor in this, our 60th

year

to develop programs and events that will

serve to further strengthen our society and

will raise awareness on the cultivation of our

National Floral Emblem.

This month, we conclude our Summer

Garden Tours with a visit to Brown’s Cut

Flower Farm. Our very own Becky

Henderson grows a very nice selection of

flowers that are great companions in the rose

garden. I am told her Dalia’s are in their

glory! It will be an interesting tour and I

hope you come out and join us. You’ll find

the details and directions elsewhere in this

newsletter.

I hope you will make an effort to attend our

August Meeting. It is our annual “pot luck”

meal and during the evening, we will install

our new Officers and I will present a few

ideas/initiatives for the coming year.

As I have said before, I believe that we exist

for two reasons; People & Roses. One

without the other is not much of a Rose

Society. We each possess a unique level of

knowledge and expertise about roses and I am

so proud to be a part of an organization whose

members are so willing to share what they

know while also pursuing a “more excellent

way” to cultivate and exhibit the rose.

Our foray into social media (website, Facebook

& Twitter) has taught me that there is a

multitude of people, who not only love roses,

but they are also eager for information on

growing roses. We must stand ready willing

and able to reach out online and in person.

It is sure to be an exciting year, I hope you will

get involved in our activities, share your love

of roses and together we will continue building

on the foundation set by those who came

before us.

Antique Rose Trail in Foley, Alabama

by Susan S. Elliott

As you travel south to the beach this summer,

be certain to take the time to stop and smell the

roses along the Antique Rose Trail in Foley,

Alabama. This one mile paved trail was

initiated in 2007 by former City Administrator

A. Perry Wilbourne, Bill Goodwin, Baldwin

County Master Gardeners, and many other

volunteers.

The Antique Rose Trail contains more than

515 rose bushes in more than 500 varieties. It

meanders along the former route of the L & N

Railroad and is one block east of Highway

Alabama 59 and adjacent to the Magnolia

Hotel. The trail provides a wonderful

opportunity for rose enthusiasts and all lovers

of beauty to admire the flowers and enjoy the

peaceful setting complete with numerous

benches and gazebos.

Some of the many old varieties included are

Arethusa, Lamarque, Duchesse de Brabant,

Perle d'Or, Mermaid, Quietness, Mutablis, Old

Blush, Marie Pavie, Marchesa Boccella, and

the Green Rose.

Last month, the trail received the prestigious

honor of being named a National Recreation

Trail.

Our Officers and Directors play pivotal roles in our

society. They plan and execute society functions,

handle finances and lead the way in promoting the

rose to our community.

Make plans now to attend our August meeting. It’s

our annual Pot Luck dinner. This year, we will also

hold a brief installation ceremony to formally

recognize our new Officer’s.

If your roses are not fried or baked your water

bill is probably pretty high and the roses are

still blooming well.

A relatively new find on the market which The

American Rose Society in the last issue of

Rose both endorsed and had CR commentary

on Garden Safe Brand Fungicide 3 Garden

Products in one, available at Wal-Mart. I

found it is the most effective of any affordable

spray presently on the market. An added

attraction is the one spray which controls three

problems black spot, rust, and powdery mildew

fungus, aphids, whiteflies and other insect

pests, plus spider mites, a plus in this year’s

hot humid summer.

The initial premixed sprayer has held up for the

whole summer with refills from the

concentrate. I recommend you buy the bottle of

Fungicide 3 Concentrate to get you through the

season.

If you are one of our trained pruners assigned

to a rose bed in the Rose Society Quadrant

please check it out. The beds look better with

extra attention. If you aren’t trained you may

call someone who is and arrange an hour of

work with them. The Gardens will attract a lot

of visitors on July 23 as part of a citywide

event.

A rose suggestion for those who have an arbor

but do not want New Dawn because its initial

bloom is good in Spring, with little thereafter,

and it has an exceedingly aggressive growth

habit. A canopy climber Mermaid has only five

petals, so lasts only a day, but blooms

constantly throughout the summer, Its huge

center of long golden stamens attracts bees of

many kinds. It does have wicked horns. Its long

shoots (up to 15 or so feet) take pruning very

well.

Also, Sun Flare, an easy care, affordable

floribunda, I found at Lowes is remarkable for

the number of blooms on its tightly mounded

upright form, lots of color, with phenomenal

repeat. My Koi are gone, their pond is filled in

and planted with yellow roses; Sun Flare is

easily the most eye catching.

For those in need of Consulting Rosarian

recertification, there is a school in beautiful

Sarasota Saturday, August 20. One can attend

those schools just for one’s own edification, or

register to take the test to become a CR (Diane

Celeste 941-358-6991). The teachers are truly

outstanding and a benefit to teaching us how

our roses can look like we want.

Happy sharing, even if it’s only one rose

floating in a bowl or one in a water bottle.
