Summer Fiesta Highlights

The Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives (TCCE) recently held its annual convention in Nac-ogdoches. The Amarillo Chamber is a member of the state organization, and submitted an entry in the TCCE Media Contest in the Marketing Campaign category. Entries in this category could include a media mix pertaining to the promotion of the Chamber itself or a spe-cific Chamber event. We entered materials used for the 2010 BusinessConnec-tion® event “Open for Business”. Marketing pieces included posters, direct mailers, tickets, tradeshow directory, newsletter coverage, bill-boards, radio and televi-sion PSA’s, and power-point that showcased the

370 businesses booths to more than 5,000 atten-dees. Because of our size and annual budget, Amarillo competes with the larger communities in the state such as Dallas and Houston. Out of 9 total entries in this category, the Amarillo Chamber received

2nd Place. “We know we compete with the larger markets. The Ama-rillo Chamber of Commerce and our community have much to offer. I think this award showcases what we provide to our members, our city and our area,” commented Chamber President & CEO Gary Molberg.

A group of ten scientists, farmers and water policy makers from the state of Zacatecas in Mexico met on July 7-9, 2010 scientists from the Agricultural Research Service laboratories in Bushland, Texas and El Reno, Oklahoma, University of Georgia, Texas A&M University, Kansas State University, and the U.S. Geological Society, along with representatives from regional ground water conservation districts, Foreign Agri-cultural Service-USDA, and National Resource Conservation Service-USDA. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss water conservation practices for the Calera Aquifer in Mex-ico, the multi-state Ogallala Aquifer and the Rush Spring Aquifer in Oklahoma. Irrigation is the chief water use in all three of these aquifers and agriculture contributes greatly to the three regional economies. This project in Mexico is an ‘outgrowth’ from the Ogallala Aquifer Program which consists of scientists with USDA-ARS laboratories at Bushland and Lubbock, Texas, along with Kansas State University, Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Service at both Ama-rillo and Lubbock, Texas Tech University, and West Texas A&M University. This was the third meeting of this American-Mexican group; the first two meetings were held in the city of Zacatecas, in the state of Zacatecas of Mexico. The group from Mexico included scientists, water policy makers and farmers. The farmers also were member of the local water district, COTAS. Presentations on the first day (July 7) gave an overview of the geographic area covered by Ogallala Aquifer and the importance of the aquifer to the economy of the Texas High Plains. Services available to assist farmers with irrigation problems and increasing water application efficiency were described by representatives from NRCS-USDA and Texas AgriLife Extension Service. These presentations addressed questions that the people from Mexico had during the sec-ond workshop held in October 2009. The last presentations of the first day were progress reports by the research team regarding efforts made by the group since the last meet-ing. It was noted that information regarding the hydrology

of the Calera Aquifer is less developed than that for the Ogallala Aquifer. On the second day of the workshop, participants divided into two groups: one group discussed technical issues re-lated to the research projects; the other visited the North Plains Ground Water Distinct in Dumas, Texas and the Texas AgriLife Research station at Etter, Texas. Representatives of the North Plains Groundwater District discussed how their organization worked and a lively discussion occurred. Deci-sions regarding ground water use tend to be made by the central federal government in Mexico City and the dele-gates from COTAS expressed a desire to have a system more like that on the Texas High Plains in which water users and the public are more involved in making water policies. At the Texas AgriLife Research Station at Etter, the group was briefed on the economics of water conservation re-garding grain production. It became apparent from this discussion that farms in Zacatecas tend to be smaller and water use is under stricter control by the federal govern-ment. Despite the differences, the group from Mexico was interested in how they could use more efficient irrigation techniques common to Texas to help them deal with a pro-posed 50% decrease in water appropriations in the next 10 years. On the workshop’s last day (July 9), the group toured the Conservation and Production Research Laboratory of USDA-ARS in Bushland, Texas. Presenters on the tour were chosen to feature research that may be useful to the group from Mexico to adapt to decreasing allotments of water for irrigation. Discussion on the last day culminated in an ac-tion plan for further research, which would include devel-opment of a better understanding of the hydrology of the Calera Aquifer and how much water can be saved by farmers by adopting water efficient irrigation systems. http://www.ogallala.ars.usda.gov/

The event was celebrating the delivery of the first of several new CV-22 Osprey ordered by the Air Force’s Special Operations group residing on the base. Due to Amarillo’s ties to Bell Textron and Cannon AFB, the group was not only very welcomed, but well received by the event organizers.

Editor’s Corner By: Penni Bentley, Chamber Director of Communications penni@amarillo-chamber.org We really do have some of the most fun events in Amarillo, and if you are not participating, you are missing out. Sure, the Chamber is about growing your business and making connections, but some-times the best way to do that is in a fun, relaxed environment. Right now our staff is putting together the goodie bags for our Chamber Open Golf Tournament next week. In it’s 11th year, this event has grown more and more and has a waiting list to play. We sold out earlier than ever this year, and to accommodate more that wanted to play, we opened up a morning division. There will be 320 golfers networking on the golf course...what a great way to meet new people and build some lasting friendships. Not to men-tion, our sponsors get some great recognition and prime visibility. We can’t thank them enough. In a little more than six weeks, the smell of mesquite and charcoal will fill the air of downtown Amarillo when we host the 15th Annual Chamber Good Times Celebration® Barbecue Cook-Off. It’s hard to believe this event started back in 1996 in the Chamber parking lot with just a handful of teams. The event has grown to more than 105 cooking teams and takes up more than 4 city blocks with about 7,000 people sampling the best ribs, brisket, chicken in a tri-state area. We are very excited to partner with Panhandle Tickets for the first time to sell our tickets online, at the Civic Center Box Office, at all Amarillo and Canyon United Supermarkets and other Panhandle Ticket outlets. We know this will be the most convenient option for our event goers. And it’s still the best price for all you can eat and drink and network at $25 per person. (The $25 price is good until
