Dear Friends,

This weekend, our parish is the host site for a Diocesan Marriage Enrichment workshop for married couples across the diocese. The event is being co-sponsored by the Diocesan Marriage and Family Life Office and Worldwide Marriage Encounter. I worked within the WWME movement for many years. I was consistently impressed with the results of this experience on the couples who participated. The focus on the weekend was couple communications and a deeper sense of the Church caring for their sacramental union. For many years WWME was very active in the Baton Rouge Diocese. Not so much in the past few years. Over the recent weeks our parish has been considering Catholic evangelization and a revival of WWME in our Diocese would bear good fruit for our church. It would be my hope that out of this weekend’s work some of the couples would be called to help revive WWME in the Diocese.

Someone recently asked me about having their marriage “blessed” or “validated” within the Catholic Church. The conversation led to more questions one of those being how does it affect a Catholic who is married but not in the Catholic Church? It’s a question that many people ask. As part of our Catholic teaching on marriage, we believe that a Catholic is required to have a priest or deacon of the Church witness his/her vows. This “official” witnessing is not a civil witness, i.e. for the state, but is the witness of the Church as the couple offer each other the sacrament of marriage. What is that? The sacrament of marriage is the promise to be faithful, to love, honor and respect the spouse until death parts. So, when a Catholic chooses not to have the Church witness his/her wedding vows, that person is no longer in union with the Church’s teachings on marriage, and is thus asked not to receive Holy Communion until the marriage is blessed or witnessed by the Church in the sacrament of Marriage. I am often asked to provide this kind of witnessing for the Church for couples. So, if you are a Catholic person who has been married “outside of the Church” why not come and talk with me. Let me help you with this.

I hope your July is filled with blessings from the Lord.

Love,

We extend our sympathy to the following parishioners who recently lost a loved one:

To the family of Bob Morley on the death of his father, Robert Morley..

VOCATION

When the apostles were trying to reflect on their ministry, Jesus asked them to "Come by yourselves to an out-of-the-way place." Listening to God in quiet prayer is very important in vocation discernment. Listen to God's voice in an out-of-the-way place. If you feel the call is genuine, call or email Father Matt Dupré at 225.336.8778, [email protected], or visit, www.diobr.org/vocations.
