Weekly Newsletter Term 3 Week 4 12th August 2019
The Principal’s Message Dear Parents, Caregivers and whanau - Tena koutou katoa, talofa lava
Last week we were lucky enough to have children’s author (and Hunter and Drover’s Granny), Jo Guy visit us to read one of her books Snooty Cat. Jo has written several children’s books and it was a great treat for the Junior and Middle classes to be able to listen to a real author and ask her questions. Jo’s books are fantastic and all have a moral or set of values they teach through the text. Snooty Cat fo-cused on the importance of treating others as you wish to be treated. We would like to thank Jo and Bryan Guy for coming in to share their books with our children. MOE School Bus Review - Public Meeting This is a Notice of Intention of a public meeting which we the Elsthorpe School Board of Trustees will be holding in the near future concerning the Ministry of Education’s intention to change the Kahuranaki bus route. Full details will be shared at the school meeting but in short, the MOE want to stop the bus at 1234 Kahuranaki Rd thus affecting not only Elsthorpe pupils but also Havelock High School students and their families that use this route on a daily basis. We the Board have written to the Ministry last week with our con-cerns regarding this issue and have highlighted the effect this intended change will have not only on our School commu-nity but the wider community in general. We have also written to Lawrence Yule, theTuki Tuki MP and Alastair Scott Wairarpa MP to gain their support on this issue. If the Ministry get their way their revised bus route will be implemented quickly. This pro-active Board has acted swiftly on this issue and is hoping the Ministry will see sense and leave the route as status quo. If they reject our response to the proposal, we feel we need as much support from not only the School Community but the wider community as we can get. We will call a General Public Meeting at the School regard-ing this serious matter to ask for all of your support. This is an urgent matter. If the Ministry get their way they could start looking at reducing all bus routes that concern families in this community. We will keep you informed as to where we are at with this issue via the Newsletter and if we have to call a public meeting all details will be on the School Web-site, the Newsletter and the School and Community Facebook pages. Thank you. Elsthorpe School Board of Trustees Elsthorpe Senior students had a great day at the annual Ongaonga 7s last Wednesday. We took a Yr 5/6 rugby team, a hockey team and girls in a combined netball team. There was an impressive opening ceremony with powhiri, a flame relay and pigeons being released. All teams played really well and were extremely competitive. There was fantastic team play on the rugby field, outstanding defence on the hockey turf and terrific commitment on the netball court. Once again Elsthorpe punched well above their weight on the sports field. A big thank you to Logie, Fi, Horiana, Carla and Gerry for their support and Haylee for her organisation of the teams. Our students have been offered the opportunity to have 5 tennis lessons this Term provided by a professional tennis coach. These lessons start this Wednesday afternoon and run for the following four Wednesdays. Kiwisport are funding the majority of the cost of the lessons and ask that each child contribute $4 towards the lessons. We would appreciate if this could be paid to the School Office by the end of August. Our School values are Trust, Honesty, Respect, Inquiry, Valour and Endeavour. Our value focus for this week is Honesty - tell the truth and be honest with others. Have a great week. - Sandy Crawford - Principal

be training hard for this over the next few weeks so they must make sure they have their running shoes at school every day. Elsthorpe School have recently started the journey to become a PB4L School. PB4L stands for Positive Behaviour for Learning. PB4L is a school wide, structured programme that helps set up sustainable systems for behaviour and to improve the wellbeing of our children. PB4L’s programmes are for all people throughout our School community. Further information regarding up-coming PB4L community engagement meetings will be out later in the Term.

COMMUNITY NOTICES:
HIGH TEA - PAFS FUNDRAISER - With thanks to Rhonda and Aaron, PAFS will be hosting our 3rd biannual High Tea at Patangata Tavern on Saturday 7th Sep-tember. This is a very popular event and brings quite a number of people back to the district for a catch up over tea/coffee and delicious little morsels. This is where we appreciate the support of our fantastic school families in the way of baking and help on the day to make it a great success. Please let me know how you can help and also if you have any teacups and saucers or tiered cake stands we would be very apprecia-tive if we could please borrow them for the day.
