International disaster relief operations-  increase humanitarian contribution-   create a more stable security environment

International disaster relief operations-  increase humanitarian contribution-   create a more stable security environment

1987   JDR Law was enacted      Japan has engaged   in international disaster relief activities when large-scale disasters have occurred oversea

1992   JDR Law was amended to enable the SDF to participate

  when foreign minister deems it particularly necessary 

     Since then, the SDF has maintained its readiness for IDR operations with its self-sufficient capability.

Our Disaster Relief Operations are based on the Request of the Receiving Countries or International Organizations

Defense Minister orders the SDF to dispatch its units

Foreign Minister consults with Defense Minister.

○ 26th of December     Occurred a big earthquake west off Sumatra Island of Indonesia and a tsunami in the      Indian Ocean○ 27th of December    Thai Government requested an aide to the Japanese Government○ 28th of December    Request from Foreign Minister, MOD decided to dispatch the MSDF vessels ○ 3rd of January  Request by the Indonesian Government Japan dispatched on   SDF units    ○ 6th of January   ASDF’s Airlift units, MSDF’s maritime units, and GSDF’s medical units to devastated

areas mainly Banda Aceh, Indonesia.
