Syllable Rules

To determine how a long word sounds we simply determine where we can

divide it into smaller groups of sounds. There are three syllable rules to helpus do this they are stated below.

Syllable Rule #1:

When two consonants separate two vowel sounds, the first syllable usually

ends after the first consonant.

For Example:

rab-bit fen-der sup-per

Syllable Rule #2:

When only one consonant separates two vowel sounds, the first syllable

usually ends with the first vowel sound.

For Example:

ma-gic hu-man ti-mid

Syllable Rule #3:

When a root word has a prefix or a suffix added to it, the prefix or suffixusually makes a syllable.

For Example:

re-place thank-ful

Divide these words into syllables following the rules.

garden ___________ parrot __________ unlock __________

lady ___________ barrel __________ balloon

Higher Level Story- Reading Comprehension

There's a family of monster GlugsWho live inside my home.

You can hear them splash and gurgle As around the pipes they roam.

And when you pull the plug out,They glug up in a rush,

Wanting to be first to rideThe soapy, swirly gush!

Sometimes you hear one moaning,But they mostly laugh and sing.

They make a high-pitched whistleWhen they have a gluggy fling.

If you turn the taps off quicklyIt gives them quite a shock.

You hear them fall about and bang As on the pipes they knock.

I've never actually seen a Glug,However hard I stare

Up taps and down the plug hole,But I can hear them giggling there.

Toys of Old

The 1990's is a great time to be a kid. More toys and games are availablethan ever.

Back in the 1800's children didn't have as much leisure time as childrentoday. They were expected to do many more chores around the house and farm.

As some families moved to cities and gained wealth, toys were given to theirchildren. But even their play had purpose: to develop morals as well as physicaland social skills. Dolls came with trunks full of clothes of the latest fashions. Bydressing the dolls, girls learned the proper way to dress. A game called gracehoops used sticks and a ring that players tossed back and forth without lettingthe ring though their hands. In playing this game, girls were supposed to learn tomove with grace. The first board game manufactured in America was intendedto teach morals. Players tried to avoid spaces marked cruelty  and poverty  andtried to land instead on truth, gratitude, or generosity .

During the early 1900's miniature models of adult tools and machines werefavorite toys. Girls had stoves, washing machines, and brooms, while boysplayed with toy hammers and screw drivers. In 1903, Teddy Bears became

popular stuffed animal. Pink Silly Putty, invented in 1943, was fun to bounce andstretch.

Today, games and toys have a different focus. Many of them are meant toeducate. Some games encourage kids to learn more about the world orstimulate creativity. But others are purely for entertainment. Children today alsohave the advantage of technology, so interactive computer and video games arepopular. What will the toys of the future be like? Which toys will remain popular? What new toys will take their place?

It is hot, sunny June day. Bev is excited about her surprise

birthday party she has planned for her daughter, Robin. She can

picture the look on Robin’s face when she walks in and everyone

yells, “Surprise!”

Future Plans

Alexander Marshall was about to complete his formal education and

graduate from the university. In between cramming for his science, math,

English and psychology exams, he was thinking about his future.

He remembered his advisor suggesting that he set up an appointment

with the representative from the State Department who would be on

campus next Friday.

Alex had always been interested in the diplomatic corps. He spoke

Spanish and French fluently and he liked to travel. This would give him

a chance to get more information and gain a better understanding of this

 possible vocation.

It all seemed quite overwhelming, but Alex knew this was an

opportunity he shouldn’t pass up.

He picked up the phone in his room, called the placement office,

and set up several meetings with potential employers.

A feeling of confidence came over Alex. His college days were

ending, and he looked forward to starting a new life as a professional.
