ATTENTION! Highway Cleanup 5th Sunday Rosary

GRAND KNIGHT’S CORNER Brothers and Families,

Thanks to all who have supported and advised the new team through the first month of the Fraternal Year, espe-cially important given the complexity and unknowns of our current times.

I begin with a welcome to our new Pastor and Chaplain, Father Ramon Ba-ez and offer heartfelt thanks for his prayers for a successful year. We also welcome Father Tipton, the Chaplain for St. John Paul the Great High School, to our community. On a bittersweet note, we bid farewell to Fr. Bill and Fr. Jack as they move on to retired life. We wish them both health and happiness, as well as hopes they do not become strangers.

We have had our first Bingo session in 20 weeks and both our first live in-person Council meeting and the lounge open for the first Friday night since March. None looked like they used to, but did serve as hope that some sense of normalcy may be returning, thanks to the work of the House Com-mittee and key leaders in the Bingo Program. There’s a lot of learning go-ing on, and I ask for everyone’s patience as we make decisions to help us increase activities but do so safely.

One thing we can control is communicating. I sense we can do better, with more than just email. We are finalizing the details and we will be getting this started soon. If you get the call to help, please be receptive! All it will entail is calling 4-5 other Knights periodically, on your own schedule, and providing feedback when appropriate.

Thanks to everyone helping out with food distribution, the food pantry reno-vation, ushering, and in other ways. Our August remains relatively light. Council Home Lounge Now Open! GOOD NEWS! After being closed for 4 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic we were able to open the Council Home Lounge on July 17th. We had an enthusiastic group of 14 people show up for our “Grand Re-Opening” and despite the new restrictions, I believe everyone had a good time. It was nice to be able to interact socially and safely with my Brother Knights and their families once again! Our primary concern is for the safety of our members, guests, and volunteer workers so we are following so-cial-distancing, mask, and enhanced sanitizing guidelines recommended by the CDC and State of Virginia. We hope to see even more people as weeks go on, but please be patient with us as we work through these new processes. We have seating available for up to 30 people between the inner and outer lounge areas. There are copies of the new rules posted in the council home, and at each table in the two lounges. For more information please email: [email protected] We hope to see you soon! JPI House Committee

COUNCIL HOME NEWS

Each August we look forward to the Supreme Convention and all the news about the prior Fraternal Year. This year is no different due to the pandemic. Although this message has been prepared prior to the con-vention, here are some predictions:

The Order will set a new record in the amount of mon-ey we donate to charities.

The Order will set a new record in the number of hours volunteered.

We already know that our insurance program had an-other record year ending in December 2019; 19 con-secutive years of growth! (And congratulations to the many of you who protected your families last year and helped set that record!)

We will have given a substantial amount of money to Pope Francis from the Vicarius Christi fund.

Our Asset Advisors will have more dollars under man-agement; managed, of course using the investment guidelines from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

We will add to our surplus, which means our strength to pay claims and weather poor economic times will improve.

I predict that the Supreme Knight will report that the Order will have provided more money to rebuild homes for persecuted Christians in the Middle East. Donated more money to disaster relief in the wake of hurricanes, flooding and typhoons. Placed more ul-trasound machines in service to save lives.

Given more support for religious freedom. This organization, started by a simple, humble parish priest with men at St. Mary’s Parish in New Haven,

Connecticut in 1882, has grown to spectacular heights. All of these efforts and worthwhile projects are a source of pride for us members! But here’s the reality: For the Catholic folks in this council and in these parishes here—you, my brother knights…you, are the Knights of Columbus. When locals think about the Knights, they may have some general notion about all these good works we do and the Order’s amazing impact around the world. But to the local parish and the community, you represent all that is good in this Order. When you are volunteering at a Special Olympics event, when you are visiting the sick, helping your pastor, handing out coats for kids, raising money for a charitable cause right here in your own backyard—this is what people see, they see you; to them you are what it means to be a Knight of Co-lumbus. When you lead with faith, protect your family, serve others and defend your values, you are a wit-ness inspired by our founding principles. Congratulations on another record-breaking fraternal year! I look forward to helping protect your families. Vivat Jesus!

Greetings my Brother Knights. I hope you all are doing well, and are safe and happy.

We appear to possibly be trending towards some sense of normalcy, but do so cautiously. Opportuni-ties to serve again (such as Bingo) and socialize (from a social distance) are beginning to open up again. We need to remain vigilant, and use our heads.

A huge thanks to the 12 Brother Knights who continue to routinely support the Prince William County Emergency Food Bank located at Holy family Catholic Church and the food pantry, putting the “Action” in Faith in Action. I’d also like to recognize those Brothers who helped with the Holy Family Summer Work Camp program: Matt Hawks, Ed Fairbairn, Charlie Chichester, Ruben Raimundi, and Gabriel Churchill. Their time and talents were greatly ap-preciated by Toni Papp and the work camp students. The distributed nature of camp due to COVID-19 allowed work on several projects at Church, to include a handicap accessible ramp exit from the church, an entry trellis and improvements to the Rosary Walk. They also completed four additional outdoor projects and repairs for parishion-ers. Also much appreciated: the efforts of several Knights and sons who responded to the call to help renovate the original food pantry to increase efficiency and capacity, freeing the gym area for Holy Family Religious Education and the school year.

In August, with Bingo also picking up again, we will also begin our Highway Cleanup for the Fraternal Year on Sat-urday, August 22nd. We will meet at 7:30 am behind the Hillendale Fire Department, off Dale Boulevard. Stop in for some fellowship, donuts, coffee, and spend an hour or so cleaning up. It really does go quickly with a good turn-out. We will end the month with our first 5th Sunday Rosary, to be conducted in concert with the 11:00 am Mass, on Sunday, August 31st. More details will come out beforehand. Conditions permitting, we hope to pick up steam a little more in September. Finally, we still need help with men who can spare a little time to Chair the KCIC pro-gram, and to learn how they eventually take over the important KOVAR.

Enjoy your August. Stay safe and may God bless you and your families. Vivat Jesus! Ray

THE POWER OF PRAYER

Page 4

by Bob Rouleau

Mk 11: 24 - "I give you my word, if you are ready to believe that you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer, it shall be done for you."

Just think! If ALL the Knights and their families from our Council and our Assembly were to take a moment to pray for those who are “Sick or in Distress”, wouldn’t this awesome power produce results? After all, GOD SAID IT WOULD! So I ask all of you to call me, (703) 670-6423, e-mail me, [email protected] or tell me in person the names of individuals and/or families who are in need of prayer, whether sick or in distress, and I will include them in this list. (“Distress” means death in the family, out of work, having financial, marital or other “personal” problems either at home or at work.) Contact me by using any of the following methods: e-mail me, [email protected]; call me, (703)670-6423; tell me in person or use the Council web page at WWW.kofcknights.org/CouncilSite/?CNO=7165. (Click on “Current Prayer Requests” and then click on “Send prayer request to Bob Rouleau”.)

And finally, let us remember to pray for our Priests, the Born, the Unborn, all Council widows, all mem-bers of our families, our parish and our community in need.

Congratulations to Gunawan “Willie” and Melania Wibi-sono, the Council August Family of the Month. Gunawan and Melania have been married for 20 years and attend Holy Family, where Gunawan has been a member for five years. Gunawan has been a member of JP1 Council 7165 for one year. He is already a 4th Degree Knight and supports the usher program at the Basilica of The National Shrine of the Immaculate Con-ception. He is also the Co-Chair of the Council’s Com-munity Committee. Gunawan works in Transportation Services of the Prince William County School system. Melania works in customer service at the Smithsonian, and enjoys cooking. Their daughter, Gabrielle attends Osbourn Park High School and enjoys drawing. They set a strong example of displaying Christian values as a family, teaming up to share the housework and spend-ing quality time together with outdoor activities such as gardening, sightseeing, hiking, and biking. They attend and volunteer as a family, often at several Masses per weekend, as ushers and greeters helping our Church safely celebrate Mass in the social distancing era.

Please join me in recognizing a Knight who is no stranger to these pages as the Council Knight of the Month for August. He has been an active member of our Council for 23 years. Most are aware of his past service in several officer positions and degree teams, as well as his lead-ership and support to almost every activity we do. He has been the House Committee Chair and House Man-ager for several years, as well as the Chief Operating Officer of the Charity Corporation. Because he wasn’t busy enough, he was recently elected and accept the position of President of the Charity Corporation. His advice, drawing from all this experience, is always rele-vant and welcome. Our Council Knight of the Month is…wait…there’s more. When you get this Knight, you always get another for the price of one, so it’s only fit-ting they are recognized together—it was simply not possible otherwise. The other half is also very involved, a Knight of over 33 years, and a member of the House Committee as well as the Board of the Charity Corporation. He is an ex-pert on maintenance issues and audio-visual at the Council Home. He is the routine behind-the-scene problem solver and a big reason for the successful op-eration of the Council Home, from maintenance and repairs to supply runs. He himself has also seen ser-vice in several officer positions and supported almost every activity in the Council from providing sound sup-port for degrees and dinners to serving as Santa and at Bingo. He is always willing to help. Their dedication and teamwork especially over this dif-ficult period has been critical as they’ve solved issues at our Council Home, handled problems and repairs, and renovated the store-room in the lounge. They put long hours into plans, changes to procedures, and safeguards allowing us to re-open for meetings and camaraderie. For this commitment, PGK Gray Gagnon and PGK Joe Graham are the Council “Knight” of the Month, and well deserving of our thanks.

K.C. LADIES Since March The K. C. Ladies have been quietly busy during the lock down. Sunshine Lady Kathy Libby continued sending birthday, anniversary, get well and sympathy cards to the member-ship. Carole Protacio, Prayer Quilt Lady, provided Prayer Quilts to those who requested them. K. C. Ladies Sewing Team consisting of Carole Prota-cio, Theresa Dittamo, Joyce Brown, and Arlene Ka-minsky made 40 masks for the helpers at Holy Family Church Prince William Emergency Food Distribution Network. Mary Allen, Thought of the Day Lady, has been providing the membership with wonderful thoughts twice a week. K. C. Ladies Members have been donating food to the Food Pantries at Holy Family, Sacred Heart and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Churches. Some members did drive-by's to check on other members. President Nancy McDowell phoned members to see if they were fine, and if they needed anything. Look for your Welcome Letter with your Membership Form around the middle of August. Dues are $15 a year plus a volunteer donation of $3.65 (Penny-A-Knight-A-Day) for vocations.

September 1st Meeting will be a little different than previous years. Reservations are a must. Contact Nancy McDowell before August 25th (703-590-2052) if you are coming to the meeting. The House Commit-tee will set up the chairs 6' apart and sanitize them. Members are requested to wear their masks during the meetings. There will be no refreshments after the meetings. In regards to Bingo Cake Sale and Raffles.....they are canceled. See you Sep. 1st.

A couple of guidelines: Manufacturer's coupons only. No restaurants, grocery stores, etc. Pay attention to expiration dates. Coupons used on the base are good for six (6) months after the expira-

tion date. Please separate the coupons into “food” and “non-food” categories. If you eat or drink it for a meal or
