The Joule.System™ is an

intelligent energy storagesystem designed to help

solve the challenges that

utilities face today —

 growing demand, rising costs

and constrained supply.

 A cost eective tool that

helps control peak demand

events, without the high cost

of additional generation

sources.

Utilize current generation &

transmission capabilities for

more balanced & ecient

 grid operation.

Monitor & manage a

complete array of grid

control devices from any

computer through a cloud-based software interface.

Intelligently control, frm and

manage generation from

renewables.

Relieve transmission and

distribution congestion.

Reduce emissions fromexisting fossil fuel-based

 generation.

We want to change the

way electric utilities think

about electricity systems.

Electric utilities face daunting challenges: 4The demand for energy is rising, along with the

cost of building new generation equipment.

4Transmission & distribution infrastructures

are congested and stressed.

4The promise of harnessing & integrating

power from renewable technologies is still a

challenge.

4Satisfying new emission standards and

implementing lower carbon generation

solutions are critical.

At Demand Energy, we’re building solutions

for power providers that will redesign grid

architecture to drive supply chain eciencies.

It’s called intelligent energy storage.

It’s called  Joule.System™.

DISTRIbUTED STORagE NETwORk — (Storage at the Edge)

The next level of supply chain

eciency for utility operationsIntelligent energy storage is the answer to many of the challenges utilities facetoday. Electrical systems are designed to generate and transmit energy. Gridinfrastructures are built to meet high demand periods – roughly a four hourperiod each day. The entire system generally sits under utilized during lowdemand hours. And it’s the same problem around the work with load factorsbetween 30% to 50%.

Integrating intelligent energy storage redesigns grid architecture. It allowspower companies to maximize the value of existing infrastructure, and realizea new level of supply chain eciency. It solves the issues of renewablesintegration, relieves capacity constraints and extends the service life of existing

transmission and distribution (T&D) equipment.

Storage systems charge during o-peak hours or when energy from renewablegeneration becomes available. Intelligent grid interface software releases storedenergy to the grid during peak demand periods. This helps promote consistentgeneration throughout a 24 hour period, balancing equipment usage, alleviatingpeak event stresses, and lessening the need to add new generation.

A cost eective, highly ecient way to meet the challenges of growing demandand constrained supply. Intelligent energy storage can be located nearlyanywhere on the grid, optimally distributed at or near end points whereelectricity is consumed.

 Joule.System™

INTEgRaTED INTELLIgENT ENERgy STORagE SySTEm Ground breaking technology for a new level of grid control.

The Joule.System™ embodies two advanced technology platforms: the

Grid.Controller™ and Grid.Balancer™.

A new level of control for utilities and microgrid operators, this modular,

utility-scale system can be deployed at multiple locations across

the grid to help regulate generation, better utilize transmission &

distribution systems, and integrate renewables energy.

Stored energy helps reduce dependencies on conventional carbon-based generation required for frequency regulation. It improves

equipment and capacity utilization, strengthens operational eciencies

and helps reduce carbon emissions.

The Joule.System™ is a complete solution, bringing balance to the

world’s electrical grids.

4 Optimization —

Better utilization,eciency, reliability,capacity, & equipment-life extension forend-to-end electricitysystem assets.

4 Capacity — Reduces or diminishes theneed to install new generation capacity.

4 Peak Shaving — Smooths out the“peaks and valleys” of transmission.

4 Reserve Capacity — Maintainsoperations when a portion of normalsupply becomes unavailable.

4 Voltage — Counteracts reactive eects

to grid voltage so that voltage can beupheld or reinstated.

4 Scalable — Joule.System™ modulescan be scaled to nearly any multi-MWpower & energy capacity. This ensuresthe right balance to meet applicationrequirements.

TRaNSmISSION &DISTRIbUTION

4 Saves Resources— Less stress onvital equipmentpostpones or

avoids the needto upgrade transmission and/ordistribution infrastructure.

4 Interruptions— Enhancestransmission and distribution systemperformance by osetting electricalirregularities and interruptions.

4 Congestion — Avoids congestionrelated costs by discharging duringpeak demand to reduce transmissioncapacity requirements.

RENEwabLES:CENTRaLIzED wIND

& DISTRIbUTEDSOLaR

4Time-shift — Storesenergy from renewables(which is frequentlyproduced during periods

of low demand) to be released duringperiods of peak demand. In microgrid systems that rely on renewablegeneration, energy storage is chargedduring peak renewable production, and released during low renewableproduction, reducing dependence onfossil fuel generation.

Benets & Value

4 Capacity rming— Energy storage

makes renewablesa rm resourceeliminating it’sintermittency. Theenergy storage unitworks like a shock absorber, acceptingvariable generation from renewablesources, and outputting a constant andreliable energy stream. It intelligentlyresponds to frequency dispatchsignals with required energy for stabletransmission.

Reduces the need for back-upgeneration for grid stability associatedwith utility-scale renewables

integration.4 Integration — Reduces output volatility

and variability, improves power quality, reduces congestion problems, providesbackup for unexpected generationshortfalls, and reduces minimum loadviolations.

EffICIENCy &RELIabILITy

4 Load following —Alters power output inresponse to variationsbetween electricity

supply and demand ina given area.

4 Area regulation — Reconcilesmomentary dierences betweensupply and demand within a givencontrol area.

4 Substations — Provides power toswitching components, communicationand control equipment. Can supplyenergy locally during periods of generation outages.

4 Power Quality — Protects on-siteloads against poor quality eventsby using energy storage to protect

against frequency variations, lowerpower factors, harmonics and otherinterruptions.

CONSERVaTION

4 Green Power — Reducesdependencies on conventionalcarbon-based generation requiredfor frequency regulation. Improvesequipment and capacity utilization, strengthens operational eciencies &reduces carbon emissions.

Is energy storage the answer  for  your utility ?

To learn how the Joule.System™can enhance & integrate with
