A Call to Minyan – We Need You!Please do not forget the continuing need of our Minyan. The camaraderie and spiritual fulfillment which develops when building a Kahal Kodesh,a Holy Community, is just as important as the comfort we provide to mourners in daily worship. The opportunity to meditate, reflect, and remember is essential to our spiritual growth. To connect with the Almighty is a powerful experience!Minyanim are held Sunday at 9 AM, Monday through Thursday at 7:30 PM.Shabbat Services begin at 7:30 PM on Friday and 9:30 AM on Saturday.
Fall has arrived and time is moving quickly. In October wecelebrated Sukkot, with an Interfaith Luncheon sponsored by theATC Sisterhood. Then we enjoyed Pizza in the Hut and the USYgroup feasted on Sushi and Sundaes. After that came Sh'miniAtzeret and Simchat Torah. Dan Bauman and his high energyhelped lead our Simchat Torah service. Thanks Dan. Manycongregants danced and sang around the social hall carryingTorahs of all different sizes. We then unrolled a Torah, carefullyholding onto it, and we were able to see the 660,000 wordswritten in the Torah. Brotherhood sponsored a breakfastfeaturing Mike Adams from WEEI. We also celebrated two B'naiMitzvah; Mazel Tov to Lillian Goldberg and Kenny Boykin.
The High Holidays are already two months behind us, andhopefully most of you have mailed in your pledge donations. Ifyou have not, it is not too late to mail in a donation. These fundshelp us pay for our every day expenses. Many future fundraisingevents are being planned and discussed, and it is important thatwe continuously attempt to raise additional funds. We have ourongoing programs of Bingo, Mah Jongg and Scrip. Sisterhoodwill hold their Rummage Sale in early November. We arecontinuing to pull information together for our Membership/Adbook. If every family finds at least one company that isinterested in advertising we could have over 250 ads! Personaladvertisements are also welcome. The Religious School isorganizing a candle sale that will take place just before Hanukkah.
By now Rabbi J has gone to Israel to ride in the annual Wheelsof Love Charity Bike Ride to benefit Alyn Hospital.Congratulations, Rabbi J, on your successful fundraising efforts.I am sure that he will have many new stories to tell about hisadventures in Israel.

From the Rabbi’s Desk...Two articles that I found interesting. Enjoy.
Rabbi JHow to Stay Safe in the World Today1. Avoid riding in automobiles because they are responsible for 20 percent of all fatal accidents.
2. Do not stay at home because 17 percent of all accidents occur in the home. (that's 37 % already)
3. Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks because 14 percent of all accidents occur to pedestrians. (now that's 51%)
4. Avoid traveling by air, rail or water because 16% of accidents involve these forms of transport. (that's 67%)
5. Of the remaining 33 percent, 32 percent of all deaths occur in hospitals. Above all else avoid hospitals.
You will be pleased to learn that only 0.001% percent of all deaths occur in a synagogue, and these are usually related toprevious physical disorders.
Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is in synagogue services.
Torah Study is even safer. The number of deaths during Torah Study is too small to register.
For safety's sake, go to Shul as often as possible, and attend Torah Study.
It could save your life!
Synagogue Goers Live Longer(IsraelNN.com)
A Hebrew University study found recently that adults who attend synagogue regularly live longer than those who do notattend synagogue. The research was conducted by Professor Howard Litwin of the Israel Gerontological Data Center(IGDC), and was published in The European Journal of Aging.
The study's data showed that the death rate was 75 percent higher among the group that did not attend synagogue than itwas among the group that attended synagogue regularly. “Those who attended synagogue regularly clearly had the highestrate of survival,” said Litwin.
The Talmud in tractate Berachot 8a, coincidentally, makes a similar statement: “R. Yehoshua ben Levi said to his children,Go early and stay late in shul in order that you should live a long life.”
The study was based on a 1997 Central Bureau of Statistics survey in which 5,000 Israeli men and women aged 60 andabove were interviewed about their way of life.

Boston Jewish Film FestivalDon't miss our screenings at Showcase Cinemas in Randolph! We offer two terrific Israeli films on the big screen.
On Monday, November 5, at 7 PM, we present ThreeMothers (Shalosh Imahot), directed by Dina Zvi-Riklis(Israel, 2006, 106 minutes, in Hebrew, French and Arabicwith English subtitles). Here's a brief description:
Inspired by director Dina Zvi-Riklis’ real-life mother, atriplet, this magnificent and moving family saga traces thelives and loves of three Egyptian-Jewish girls frominfancy—when they are blessed by the king of Egypt. AsRucha, the daughter of one of the triplets, tries to documenttheir lives, the sisters’ stories contradict one another, andfamily secrets emerge.
And on Wednesday, November 7, at 7 PM, we offer TheCemetery Club (Mo'aden Beit Ha'kvarot), directed by TaliShemesh (Israel, 2006, 90 minutes, Hebrew with Englishsubtitles).
Every Sabbath morning the Mt. Herzl Academy SocialClub meets at the eponymous National Cemetery, where itsmembers—elderly, in-your-face Polish-born Jerusalemites(the director’s stupefying great-aunt among them)—debateImmanuel Kant, declaim poetry, argue incorrigibly, andtogether face inexorable losses. Don’t miss thistremendously moving, hilarious portrait of Israel’semotionally rugged, dwindling Holocaust generation.
For more information on all films screening in this year's19th annual Boston Jewish Film Festival, November 1-11,visit the Festival web site at www.bjff.org. Then click onAnnual Festival and then Film Schedule or Search. Thenpurchase tickets online through ticketweb.com

These 25 people have learned the 7 StepsTo Protecting Our Children and how Consciousness, Choice,Personal Power and Relentless Compassion are the tools thatenable adults to make a community safer. Many of theseStewards have already taken the message to the greatercommunity and have voiced a commitment to creatingwritten child safety policies for ATC and other local youth-serving organizations. Rabbi Henry Gerson Religious School NewsShalom Parents. We have had a very busy month. Theholidays have come and gone and we are now settlingdown to continued new beginnings.
First of all our children are already conversing in Hebrew. It is amazing to see our little ones (K and 1) speakingsimple Hebrew phrases.
When you go into the other grades, you hear more and moreof the spoken Hebrew word. There are a lot of changestaking place this year. The seventh graders are workingaway with the fourth graders. They are learning games andreinforcing the alphabet through games that our talented 7thgraders have made up. It is amazing to see how creative thetwelve year olds are. The fourth graders are impressed withall that they are learning. We continue cross-gradeteaching. Children learn so much from one another.
The Religious School Office is starting to come together. All the housecleaning has made our office look so muchlarger. We will be Shul Beautiful very soon.
A little trivia ...Did you know that the Pilgrims looked into theBible to have a celebration? They took the holiday of Sukkotand renamed it Thanksgiving! I wish all of you a very happyand healthy Thanksgiving. Enjoy the real meaning of all ourholidays. Enjoy being with your loved ones.
This past month we started a new program that is nowmandatory for all adults and teens who are working withour children. We are most fortunate to have SusanHausman donate her time and energy to help protect ourchildren and other children against sex offenders. Thename of the program is StewardsUpNorth. This is anational organization that helps us recognize the symptoms
of children who have been affected. The program wasUNBELIEVABLE! Everyone was overwhelmed and itleft everyone feeling that it was a must! I know Susan willbe running more programs. If you have children or comeinto contact with children it is an absolute must. Thankyou again Susan for all of your time. This is a verysensitive issue that was handled to perfection.
A great big THANK YOU to Stop and Shop. They havegiven us hundred of dollars worth of merchandise. Theyhave helped us during the Holidays, Sukkot, Bingo andmost importantly our Project to help the less fortunate withour monthly drive. We can show our appreciation bycontinuing to shop at Stop and Shop and use the scrip thatwe sell. Also, please take the time out while shopping andthank our good friends (Managers) at Stop and Shop. Theyare truly our store "Angels." Our angels have names,Manager Ryan Gray, Mr. Rich Meucci and Ms. FaithWeiner, the District Manager.
Happy November Birthdays toRebecca, Benjamin, Jessica,Jordan, Courtney, and Cory

Bet ClassBusy, busy, busy beavers are what we have been. We arecontinuing on the ladder of learning the aleph-bet, along withvowels and many new words. The class is always excited toadd a link to their aleph-bet chain which hangs on ourclassroom bulletin board.
Our journey through Israel is very exciting as we see thesimilarities and differences we share with the Israeli childrenwho are the same age. We are working hard at learningprayers and songs for our class service. Remember to markyour calendars today. Friday evening, December 7, at 7:30PM, all are welcome to join us, as we lead the service. We arestarting to use our Shabbat basket. The children will shareShabbat with family and friends. They will say the blessings, invite their special "Shabbat mate" with them for theweekend, and share their experience with the class.
Another exciting month has lots in store for our Bet classroom.

Alef ClassShalom from Kitah Alef!
We've added more letters to our repertoire. Learning Mem,Lamed, Kaf and Hay has added many new words to ourlist. They are "shamash", "mezuzah", "matzah", "magenDavid", "lulav" and "kippah". We were shown theconnection between the words "magen David" and "MagenDavid Adom" the Red Star of David which is Israel'semergency relief group akin to our Red Cross. Unlike Arabcountries who are serviced by the Red Cross in times ofwar and catastrophe, Israel has to provide its own supportfor its people who are suffering.
With all these new words, we've been playing some wordrecognition games. We can pick out and identify thebeginning letter and sound of each word. We can hear theword and find the picture on our word wall. It's funlearning new words.
Having learned the story of Creation, ending with Shabbatbeing created on the seventh day, we have started studyingthe many blessings that are so important to Shabbat.Learning "L'hadlik ner shel Shabbat", the prayer forlighting candles, "Boreh Pri Hagafen", the blessing overthe wine which is part of the Kiddush, and "HaMotzi", theblessing for the challah, has us ready to enjoy andparticipate in Kabbalat Shabbat, welcoming the Shabbat, athome or in the synagogue. There were nice stories that weheard like "Sammy the Spider's First Shabbat", "OnceUpon a Shabbat", "Too Much of a Good Thing" and ourfirst story about K'tonton, our own Jewish Tom Thumb, called "K'tonton Takes a Ride on a Chopping Knife andWishes He Hadn't". Many fun papers taught us more aboutShabbat. We decorated a cos (cup) for Kiddush, did a color
by letter picture, drew flowers to fill a vase for the Shabbattable, did a Shabbat maze and tried doing a word search. InIsrael everyone buys flowers for the Shabbat table.Reading from our pamphlet about Shabbat taught us moreabout why there are two challot on the Shabbat table, howmom says the prayers over the candles and about the tallitthat dad and all the men wear on Shabbat. There is so muchto learn! We sang "Bim Bam" and tried some new Clap andRhyme poems for Shabbat "Chicken Soup Hot", "TwoShabbat Candles", "Shabbat Shalom to You", "LittleSammy Spider" and "Inside My Synagogue".
We read the stories of Adam and Eve and that sneakysnake that fooled Eve into taking a bite of the fruit of thetree of knowing good and evil. Was it an apple, apomegranate or a stalk of wheat? The Rabbis have manyquestions about what it actually was. Sailing along withNoah, his family and the animals was fun. We sang "TheAnimals are Marching Two by Two" and "The Lord Saidto Noah There's Gonna Be a Floody, Floody". They couldeven hear us in the office. We pasted animals onto our arkand colored the rainbow that G-d sends as a sign that nobig rain storm will ever cover the earth again.
Now we had the time to study more about the Old City ofJerusalem. We looked at pictures of the seven gates to theOld City, saw pictures of the tunnel that runs near theKotel, did some mazes and heard many stories. We'relearning a lot and having fun too. What could be better?
B’Shalom,
Paula Gaffin

Hay ClassShalom Kitah Hay parents! I hope you had a great monthof Tishre.
October was a busy month for all of us. We continued towork on understanding Jewish holidays with theirdetailed meanings.
We really enjoy conversing in Hebrew. Learning tospeak Hebrew makes us feel closer to Israel.
Our vocabulary is growing and we have quizzes on aregular basis, so I am pleased with the great job that ourstudents are doing. We work on improving our writingskills in Hebrew as well.
All of my students had fun learning about the first Jews whoarrived in the New World and how difficult it was to get settled. We also watched a movie and felt proud of our Jewish roots.
I was surprised about how much your children know abouttheir grandparents and their stories of immigration. We allshared our thoughts in class.
Speaking about the Jewish life cycle, we talked about ourHebrew names, baby naming and Brit Milah.
In December we are going to practice conversing inHebrew, and review the customs and meaning ofHanukkah .We also will be busy in preparation for ourclass service which will take place in January. Hope to seeyou there.
Our class is doing a great job.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving!
L'hitraot,

KindergartenShalom. The Kindergarten class continues to be a busylittle group. They have been excited about learning thealef-bet. Letters that correspond to items we are learningabout keep us going. Shin for shofar, Lamed for lulav,Samech for Sukkah, and Tzadee for Tzedakah, are just afew that we have practiced and learned so far. Thechildren have been enjoying letter hunts around theclassroom. They practice writing the letters in preparationfor creating our own alef-bet book.
The children created their own tzedakah boxes and heardthe stories, Quarters, Dimes, Nickels, and Pennies and TheVery Best Place for a Penny. Where do you think the bestplace is? Each week we count our collected tzedakahtogether, and soon we will decide the very best place forall of our tzedakah to go. We learned about the Torah, sawit up close and personal, and will even create our own. Asthe month continues, we will hear and learn about some ofthe stories from the Torah and recreate them in our veryown special way.
L'hitraot,
Inez Springer

Drivers are needed each month to bring our collection toWaltham. If you are willing to drive, please contactJonathan Bloom or Amy Snetsky ASAP [email protected] or [email protected].(This counts as one of the 13 mitzvot for the bar/batmitzvah families.)
October was ATC's month to shop and deliver food for thefamilies. Thanks to the individuals/families who"shopped" for the families and delivered the food.
A Family in NeedThe Lazarus family will continue to need our support overthe ensuing months. Bob will continue to go throughtreatment. Please email Barry Levy [email protected] or call him at 781-344-8364 if youare able/willing to help make a meal or in any other way.
Committee Looking for New MembersThe Social Action Committee welcomes new members forthe upcoming year's activities. Please contact Beth Ross [email protected] to be on the social action email list forupcoming meetings or to answer questions.
Blood DriveThe uncertainty of the times in which we live requires anew kind of commitment to maintain a 5-10 day bloodsupply. That's why the ATC Social Action Committee andthe American Red Cross are teaming up to help ensure thata safe and adequate blood supply is available when needed. Please continue supporting your family, friends, neighborsand co-workers by donating blood on Monday, November5th, 2007 at Ahavath Torah Congregation, 1179 CentralStreet, Stoughton. Donor hours are 3:00 - 8:00 p.m.
The fact is that nearly 1,600 units of blood are needed eachday to help those in need right here in our own community. It is a challenge to collect enough blood to meet the needsof hospital patients year round. It only takes about an hourof time - and one small pinch - to become a hero tosomeone in need. Giving the "Gift of Life" is one way tohelp those in need. Every blood donation is an opportunityto help an accident victim, a surgical patient, or a childbattling leukemia, to name a few.
Anyone 17 years of age or older, weighing 110 pounds ormore and feeling in good health may be eligible to donateblood. Please call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543)with any questions about donating blood, or visit our website at www.newenglandblood.org.

Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. When youpurchase scrip, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificatesand prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can usescrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, andother essentials, and with every purchase, you earn revenuefor ATC.
Our supplier acts on behalf of churches, schools and othernon profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scripfrom grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers.Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, theparticipating retailers offer a substantial discount. ATC buysthe scrip at a discount, and re-sells the certificates to familieslike yours for full face value. The discount from two to fifteenpercent or more – is our revenue.
Scrip is a popular fundraiser because families don’t have to sellanything. Our congregants produce revenue by making regularhousehold purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip.Scrip is available at most major ATC functions.
We stock scrip in various denominations for Shaw's, Stop &Shop, Roche Brothers, Butcherie, Barnes & Noble, HomeDepot, Best Buy, Outback, and more. Go to www.atorah.orgfor a complete list of available vendors.
