Congregation Beth Shalom extends sincere con-dolences to the family of Rabbi Morris B. Margolies, z”l, our beloved Rabbi Emeritus. Fro m t h e R a bb i ’s S t u d yYOU are the Best Source of Israel Information

Rabbi David M. [email protected] 913-647-7294

As I write this, Israel is at war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. My prayer is, by the time that you read this, Israel will have a cease-fire. Having spoken with many children, teens and young adults over the years when tensions rise or flare-up, I am always surprised by how little our young people know about the story of Israel. I am convinced that the most important educators about Israel and her importance to the Jewish people are parents and grandparents. Parents and grandparents are the natural educators about the values that matter most to the next genera-tion. Everything that we as adults love is transmitted wordlessly to our

children; love of food, politics, music, athleticism, voluntarism, or physical ac-tivity is transmitted to the next genera-tion through parents and grandparents sharing this love. Whether our children like it or not, they are Israel’s mouthpieces in their schools and college campuses. Many of your young people do not know the basic narrative of how Is-rael became a state, its struggles over the past century, its vitality and chal-lenges today and even more so, the nuances of the ongoing struggle with the Palestinians. What was the Six Day War? What were the Oslo agreements? What’s the “West Bank”? Gaza? Most importantly, the unan-swered question: “What does this have

to do with me?” We need to be able to articulate how the story of the creation of the State of Israel is the manifestation of the hopes and dreams of thousands of years. Because our children and grandchildren are integral players in the story of the Jewish people, Israel has vital importance to them in that role. But they won’t know how or why unless we tell them the story of Israel and the Jewish people, and include them as part of the story.

Adult Education Opportunities Rabbi Glickman announces his upcoming series of once a month classes: the “Downtown Talmud Jam: The Talmud’s Greatest Hits.” Join the Rabbi at noon for lunch & study on the second Wednesday of the month at the offices of Lathrop & Gage, 2345 Grand, Kansas City, MO. The Sisterhood Sarah Peltzman Adult Education Series, “Walking With Life,” meets on Dec. 6th and 13th.

Thirty-one Kansas City USYers joined over 200 others from EMTZA Region for the annual Kinnus in Omaha, NE, November 22-25. The theme of weekend was the “Jewstice League,” and we explored what it means to be a modern day hero. Our exploration was full of ruach, learning, social action, davening, making new friends and reconnecting with old ones!! “In my four years as a member of EMTZA I’ve never had a Kinnus with discussions so meaningful, friendships so memorable and hospital visits so spectacu-lar,” expressed Daniel Goldberg. “I had a great time at Kinnus! I already miss ev-eryone so much and can’t wait until Winter Shabbaton,” said Sophie Shapiro. “I was very proud to represent KCUSY while leading Kabbalat Shabbat in front of over 200 USYers at Kinnus.” Ricardo Zepeda stated. “It was amazing and I loved it!” emphasized Elana Goldenberg “We are so lucky to have been KCUSYers, chapter and regional board members, and now staff at Kinnus. We have been able to experience this convention from ev-ery perspective, and are so happy to give back to EMTZA Region USY because of the difference it has made in our lives.” observed Elana Goldberg and Jonathan Edelman.

Execut i ve l y Speak ingHow Many Jews Does It Take To Install a Rabbi?

[email protected]

On Shabbat Miketz, December 14-15, we will have the honor of officially installing Rabbi David Glick-man as the Senior Rabbi of our shul. Some have asked-- “What is the purpose of a rab-binic installation? Haven’t we already welcomed Rabbi Glickman and his family to our community?” In research-ing the topic I learned that a rabbinic installation is an American invention which just came into vogue in the past century. There appears to be no consensus as to the original purpose of the ceremony. Permit me to make a humble suggestion. We as Jews separate the holy from the ordinary and we mark sacred events. For instance, we separate Shabbat from the rest of the week (Havdalah-lit-erally separation) clean foods from the unclean (Kashrut) and so on. The Installation of Rabbi Glickman offers us the opportunity to reflect and mark a sacred moment. Our tradition teaches us through the Mishna to “Provide yourself with a teacher, acquire for yourself a friend and judge every person favorably”. We are so

pleased that our community has in-deed found such a wonderful teacher and friend. Rabbi Glickman’s mentor, Rabbi William Gershon of Shearith Israel of Dallas, will have the honor of installing Rabbi Glickman on Shab-bat morning. And we will have the pleasure of hearing Rabbi Gershon teach on both Friday night and Shabbat morning. The installation committee co-chairs; Erwin and Phyllis Abrams, Peter and Amy Shapiro and Eric and Lisa Ginsburg have planned a wonderful celebration. Please join us on December 14 and 15, as we rec-ognize and give thanks for this sacred moment in the life of our shul.

Each year CBS has many students who attend Jewish summer camp programs, and we know our students thrive at summer camps. A positive camp experience can have a long term impact on a child. Need-based scholarship forms for approved camp and Israel programs are now available on the Beth Shalom website. These need to be completed in full and returned to the PRS office to Amy Jacobson with a current tax return form by Friday, January 25th. The maximum amount for scholarships is $500.For more information concerning The First Time Campers Fund, click on www.onehappycamper.org or see the November Scroll. Camp Ramah in Wisconsin has a 12-day program for students entering 4th and 5th grade through 10th grade and even offers a five-day family camp at the end of the summer. To view the camp video or for more information on the programs, cost and dates, go to www.ramahwisconsin.com.

Minyan Makers are fortunate to be joined at most morning min-yanim at Village Shalom by Sarah Zeldin and Eugene Cohen. With their combined ages of almost two hundred years they are an inspiration to those around them. Interviewed recently by Tues-day morning Minyan Maven Debra Rubin, Sarah Zeldin shared that she wants to be sure there is a minyan. “I am HAPPY to be part of the min-yan. I owe it to the Lord. When you are over 100, you have to live by the golden rule.” Eugene Cohen added “It’s necessary to have a minyan, and I am contributing to it. Although I am liv-ing in a nursing home, I feel like I am

part of the community.” You, too, can be part of the community by joining Sarah, Eugene and their fellow minyan makers at the daily minyan. To join Minyan Makers, go to the CBS website: www.bethshalomkc.org and click on Minyan Makers on the left side under Quick Links.

RFEC is offering a new program, All Day Learn ‘n Play, beginning on January 3rd. Currently AFTERNOONS ARE FUN runs from 12:00 – 3:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and will now expand until 5:30 p.m. to allow parents extra time to work, shop or play! This program is for children 30 months thru 5-year olds, and the cost will be $20 per child per session.

Around the year 64 CE, a High Priest, Joshua ben Gamla, decreed that every community had to have a school for its children. Until that time Jewish children learned Hebrew and Torah from their parents. In modern times rabbis and educators thought it would be a good idea to begin formal Jewish schooling with a ceremony known as Consecration. CBS kindergarten students attending the Polsky Religious School and the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy celebrate Consecration as a community. Come celebrate with us on December 9th, 11:00 am, in Goldsmith Hall. The program will include songs, a special blessing for the children and gifts for each of our kindergarten students. A Chanukah treat is being planned following this

life-cycle program. We celebrate the beginning of formal Jewish education for the following kindergarten chil-dren: Noah Axelrod, Avi Coppaken, Gracie Cowman, Kameryn Donahue, Evie Freed, Owen Galler, Sadie Ger-shon, Claire Langer, Noa Levine, Sofia Levine, Nina McNay, Justin Parmet, Leah Snitz, Lucy Warner and Anni Werner-Pelofsky. The parent committee is comprised of Dayna Gershon, Celine Coppaken, Rachel Warner and Jenni-fer Donahue.

Chanukah is around the corner and while kids are so excited and full of anticipation, parents are stressed to the max! The challenge for parents is how to de-materialize and de-commercialize the holiday while still making it fun and meaningful for everyone! Here are some ideas: 1. Children can make presents for

their family members. Paint your own ceramics pieces; hobby shops and Pinterest have great ideas!

2. Have a book night for the gift one night and have your kids choose some books to donate to a homeless shelter. Have a family read-in to enjoy the books and cozy family time!

3. Kids make the menu one night and buy food for the JFS Food Pantry too!

4. Begin New Pajama night to watch a new movie for family movie night in PJs!

5. Count all the tzedakah you have collected all year and have the kids divide up the money for dif-ferent charitable agencies. If the kids are older, have them research different agencies to donate to!

6. Take your children to the pet store to buy treats for an animal rescue organization.

7. Adopt a family from JFS or Op-eration Breakthrough and have your kids help shop for that fam-ily.

Creating memories and rein-forcing our obligation to make our world a better place can go hand in hand this Chanukah season!

If you have a child between the ages of infancy and Kindergar-ten, join us on Shabbat, December 1, for Tot Shabbat! The experi-ence will begin at 11 am with a “tot”inental breakfast. At 11:15 am, we will gather for Shabbat singing and a PJ Library storytime led by Bridey Stangler, who has been a songleader in our com-munity for over 10 years. We will conclude our service on the bimah in Goldsmith Hall for Adon Olam and a surprise from Rabbi Glickman. Siblings, grandparents, friends and all members of the community are welcome! Come as you are, we would love to share Shabbat with you!

Directions 1. Peel the potatoes and shred them in a food processor fitted with the shredding

blade or in a blender; transfer the potatoes to a large bowl as the food processor fills up. Repeat with the onion. Transfer the onion to the bowl with the potatoes and stir in the matzo meal, egg, baking powder and salt. Fill a large skillet with 1/2 inch oil. Heat over medium-high heat until the oil is very hot but not smok-ing. (To test if the oil is hot enough, drop a small piece of potato into the oil; if the potato sizzles steadily, the oil is ready.)

2. Scoop the potato mixture by another 1/4 cups-full and add it carefully to the skil-let, flattening each latke slightly with a spatula. Fry, turning the latkes once, until golden brown and cooked through(about 3 minutes). Drain on paper towels. .

3. Serve the latkes immediately, or keep them warm in a 200 degree oven. Garnish with fresh herbs and serve with sour cream.

A wonderful and significant way to commemorate a simchah, honor a friend or relative or memorialize a loved one is to sponsor a Kiddush Luncheon. Contact Norman Levitan at [email protected] or call 913-647-7283 to sponsor a Kiddush.

Chesed, the Beth Shalom committee whose roots are based in deeds of loving kindness, has been function-ing for about twenty years. Most recently, according to Chairman Merna Siegler, the committee has focused on visits to hospitalized congregants, follow-up phone calls after their release from the hospital, and Get Well cards while they are ill. Ritual Coordinator Jill Goldstein assists the com-mittee in identifying members who are hospitalized. With that information a rotating committee of coordinators, Renana Abrams, Gloria Azorsky, Evie Grant and Sally Ross assign committee members for visits. Because of the Federal HIPPA laws, it’s particularly important that our congregants notify the office when they are (or a loved one is) ill. In addition, the committee welcomes our newest congregants by planting a tree in Israel in honor of new-borns. The Chesed Committee needs new members in or-der to expand their deeds of loving kindness to serve more congregants. In the past, the committee provided holiday gifts to congregants confined to their own homes or to nursing facilities. More volunteers are needed to resume this function. If you’d like to volunteer for any of the Chesed Committee’s wonderful mitzvot, contact Merna Siegler at 816-942-3670 or [email protected].

Homage to my Beloved RabbiEditorial Comments Monday Journeys Dinner

I was privileged to have a once in a lifetime opportunity—a phenomenal teacher! Rabbi Morris B. Margolies, z”l, was that teacher, and he helped define me as the person I am by instilling in me a love for and an understanding of Judaism. Rabbi Margolies of-ficiated at Peter’s and my wedding 46 years ago and helped us celebrate the Jewish lifecycle events of our children. Peter and I were fortunate to see Israel through his eyes on two occasions. No other trip to Israel has been as inspiring as those two trips. Because of Rabbi Margolies champion-ing equality for women in the congregation, I was one of the early women to be honored with a speaking Aliyah. Farewell my dear teacher. You will always live within me. May your memory be for a blessing.

Monday Journeys students will host their an-nual Chanukah dinner for their parents and families on Monday, December 10, 6 p.m. in Goldsmith Hall. The Journeys class, which is for 3rd-5th graders and is open to students at both the Polsky Religious School and the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, meets on Monday after-noons from 4:30 - 6:15 p.m. The theme for this semester is “Chanukah”. During the 9-week course, the class spent time designing and making their own chanukiot which they will light for the first time at the dinner. They also learned about kashrut by touring the kitchen and planning and cooking a Chanukah meal for their families including homemade sufganiyot, apple kugel and tuna melt wraps. The last half-hour of each class has been spent learning sev-eral Israeli dances which the students will perform during the evening. As a souvenir of the evening, each family will receive a Chanukah Game Book, created by the students, to take home. The focus of Monday Journeys beginning in Janu-ary will be on Hebrew. They will expand their reading skills using the SMART board and many other fun, hands on activities.

Candles are pretty, they shine very bright.Happy is what I am on HanukkahI know it with all my might. All nights are fun, but, not when the holiday is doneUnder each gold wrapper, there is a sweet surprise.Kind people have a sparkle in their eyes. And, latkes are yummy in my tummy.Have fun on the holiday, it is not crummy.
