When we moved last year, a scrawny orange tabby held court on the front porch while we got settled. The kids insisted
we feed him. I checked with our new neighbors, the former resi-dent of the house and the online neighborhood community to see if anyone was hunting for the friendly house cat. No takers. When my husband scooped up the cat for a vet visit, an implanted iden-tification chip revealed an owner's contact information and after some formalities, we spoke to a confused elderly woman who once gifted the cat to her daughter. The daughter had since moved to Colorado and had told her cat-loving mom that the cat had per-ished before the move. We're not sure exactly what path the tabby
took to our porch, but it was clear after a few months that this 11-year-old cat wasn't budging. My daughter named him Tanqueray in honor of what she thinks is a classic and classy spirit. Now Tanque ("Tank," but fancier) stands sentry by the food dish, a good 10 pounds heavier than his days on the street.
Like most pets do, Tanque tip-toed into our hearts and now will forever be a Collins.
In this April issue, we give kids and pets some love. Not nearly as much as they deserve!
Enjoy these stories and photos and don't forget to play a prank on the kid(s) in your life on April Fools Day!

“I think you missed your calling,” a career counselor told Melissa
Hampton Perlman in 2009. She laughs remembering her initial reac-tion: “I have a calling? How can you tell over the phone?”
That conversation revealed Melissa could turn her hobby—taking care of friends’ and neighbors’ pets and homes while they were away—into a business. “I had never thought about it that way before!” says Melissa, who was raised on a farm in Missouri and had been working in facilities man-agement. “I do love pets. Animals have always been a huge part of my life.”
Now she’s doing what she loves, loving what she does, and getting lots of furry love back.
Pawsitively Purrfect Pet Tails (PPPT), which she founded and operates, offers at-home services including dog walks and pet visits (for play time and affection as well as feeding, watering and adminis-tering any necessary medications), train-ing and behavioral modification sessions, pet sleepovers, and pet transportation anywhere in metro Johns Creek.
PPPT appeals to pet owners who want their pets to remain comfort-ably at home while they are away. “People want what’s best for their pets and to know that whoever is in their house is someone they
can trust,” says Melissa, who as sole proprietor is hands-on for all aspects of her business. She ensures that each client receives personalized service. Melissa is a member of Pet Sitters
International, the world’s largest educa-tional association for professional pet

sitters, as well as the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters and the Georgia Network of Professional Pet Sitters. PPPT is bonded, insured, licensed and registered plus vet recommended and pet approved.
“Often the term ‘pet sitter’ is used incorrectly, refer-ring to anyone—from a family friend to the neighbor-hood teenager asked to walk a dog—as a ‘pet sitter,’” explains Melissa. “It is important that pet owners understand that pet sitting is a professional career and professional pet-sitting services like PPPT offer peace of mind that other pet-care options cannot.”
On a typical day Melissa is up early, starting pet vis-its at 6 a.m. “Visits are scheduled every 45 minutes to an hour,” she says, often until 9 p.m. “Training sessions and lunch walks occur midday, followed by happy hour and dinner visits and finally bedtime checks or overnight sleepovers.” Each visit always includes bios, washed and replenished water and food bowls (as appropriate), and what she calls "the best part:" capturing a pet picture and sending it along with a detailed text to a pet parent who is at work or traveling. “A picture is worth a thousand words or sentiments,” says Melissa.
Keeping pets at home provides an environment where they feel safe and secure. “It reduces the risk of a safety concern,” says Melissa, who has been trained in pet first aid. “There’s no chance of mixing up food or medications with another animal. Plus, I can give your home a lived-in look since I can bring the mail in or take the garbage out.” She will also take action if anything is amiss, whether it’s a gas or propane aroma or a pet behaving out of the ordinary.
Relationships are the key. “There is something spe-cial about being able to look at a dog or cat and tell what a trigger is,” says Melissa. “I get to know them. It’s not just a simple run over and let them go to the bathroom or clean a litter box. When I’m at your house it’s all about your pet and that relationship.”

Kids Come FirstARTICLE ALEXA LAMPASONA | PHOTOGRAPHY HEIDI GELDHAUSER
Fried food, sugary drinks, and limited options...navigating the kid’s menu while adhering to healthy nutrition can be challenging. We tapped into the brains of two Northside Hospital outpatient
dietitians and here they share their tips on how to make healthy choices while dining out with kids. The Dieticians: Leah Galante, MS, RDN, LD and Elyse Sartor, RDN, LD
WHAT ARE THE HEALTHIEST STAPLES THAT ARE OFTEN FOUND ON KID'S MENUS?
Some of the healthiest staples on kid’s menus include: baked or grilled chicken or fish, carrots and celery sticks, broccoli, apple slices, orange slices, grapes, fruit cup, applesauce and low-fat milk or yogurt. Don’t just stick to the kid's menu. Look at the options from the main menu —especially the sides — and consider splitting a meal or parts of your meal with your kids.
WHAT ABOUT THE BEST BEVERAGES?
Choose healthy beverages to avoid sugary drinks like sodas, lemonades and fruit drinks. Try swap-ping sodas for sparkling water with citrus slices, an umbrella, a splash of 100 percent fruit juice, or swirly straws. Consider letting your kids create a healthier “signature” beverage with common ingredients.
Teach choosing healthy options at restaurants by doing it yourselves. If you are choosing vegetables over fries or grilled chicken instead of fries, kids will be more
apt to do so as well. You can also provide your kid with 2-3 healthy meal choices from the menu and let them choose from those for themselves.
HOW CAN PARENTS MODIFY KIDS’ ORDERS AT RESTAURANTS TO MAKE
THEM HEALTHIER?
Ask for sauces or dressings on the side and add less of these to the meal than what is typically served. Choose baked, broiled, grilled, steamed, or roasted over fried foods. Replace French fries with fruits or vegetables. Opt for whole grain options such as 100 percent whole grain breads and pastas or brown rice.
HOW SHOULD YOU WORK WITH PICKY KIDS WHEN
DINING OUT?
Parents can encourage kids to try bites of new foods off of their plates while allowing the child to choose foods with which they are familiar. Don’t force kids to eat if they aren’t hungry, but offer healthy options and try to stick to a similar meal and snack schedule even when eating out.
Lead by example and regularly introduce kids to new healthy options at home first.
Involve your kids in choosing new vegetables to try when you’re at the grocery store. Allow kids to taste them many times with other familiar options to slowly expand their palate. Model and apply the same guidelines for a family dinner at home when eating out.

“Justin… I wanted to personally thank you for all the help you provided us with the purchase of our new lake home, your knowledge of Lake Lanier was extremely helpful in our decision. Being able to view homes from the water as opposed to driving around the entire lake in a car was an amazing experience and gave us
much more insight to where we wanted to live on the lake. We were also very impressed in the way you were able to negotiate on our behalf, you got us everything we wanted. We are looking forward to seeing you on the lake this spring!! “Lake Life” - Mike M.

When looking to imbibe without the alcohol, bartenders can get
creative, using house-made fruit juices, bitters and sodas to create mocktails that will make even the most die-hard cocktail-drinker jealous. Great for adven-turous kids, too, these fresh and pretty drinks will make anyone feel special.
Fresh ingredients, house-made mix-ers, a focus on seasonality and proper technique--these are the keys to making a good mocktail, according to Brendan McMackin, bar manager at Peach & The Porkchop. His “A Pearfect Evening“ recipe utlizes pear jelly with bitters and syrup to make a sweet and sour mocktail.
THE RECIPE:
“A Pearfect Evening”1 oz fresh lemon.5 oz simple syrup2 bar spoons Maxwell Farms pear jelly1.5 oz Fee Brothers orgeat syrup
2 dashes Bitter Truth decanter bittersShaken with ice and strained into a highball glass with fresh ice. Topped with royal Jamaican ginger beer.
