Thank you to those who are financially support-ing us during the pandemic. We are praying for all our families, especially those facing financial stress.

The practice of tithing provides a regular reminder of your dependence on God. In good times, tithing helps you remember that God is the source of all blessings, and it allows you to demonstrate your gratitude for His care. In hard times, tithing motivates you to remember God’s faithfulness and enables you to demonstrate trust in God to provide for all of our needs.

Friends and Neighbors! Didn’t we all begin to think that this pandemic crisis was almost over? I know I am really ready to move forward. It seems that moving forward means continuing to face a daunting reality: the potential risk is still vibrant and destructive! Prudent precautions in our families and in the parish family are still called for. Shifting guidelines from authorities are going to be all around us for the foreseeable future!

In the face of these realities, the Parish Leadership Team has begun to ask folks who are active in ministry to help us reach out to all our registered families by phone with a personal encour-agement and a ‘one on one’ spiritual wellness contact. Calling all our families is a big project, but we think it is even more im-portant now that the country is experiencing such challenging news about spikes and increases of infection rates concerning COVID 19 and the pandemic.

We continue to see an increase in the number of folks and fami-lies coming into the church for Mass. That is very encouraging! We are counting the exact number of persons in attendance each week and our numbers are between 150 - 200 persons at each Mass. Remember, during the “Green Phase” of the pandemic we can allow as many as 75% of our seating capacity (roughly 800 persons) at any Mass in the Church.

At the same time, we are continuing to livestream two of our Masses. It seems that folks were having trouble finding the cur-rent weekend Mass. We figured out that the YouTube metrics and protocols were arranging Masses in such a way that folks couldn’t easily locate them.

Currently we “LIVE” stream the 5 p.m. Saturday Mass and the 11 a.m. Sunday Mass. The 5 p.m. Mass is then archived for folks to watch when they choose. We are limited by copywrite regula-tions to a specific period of time before we must remove even current Masses from our archive list.

Even with strong adherence to CDC, PA Health Department, and Archdiocesan Guidelines and Restrictions, we continue to cele-brate the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Matrimony as appropriate. We are offering many options for families who were not able to celebrate the First Reception of Holy Communion back in April because of the cessation of public Masses. Funeral Masses and/or Funeral Services are celebrated as the family may determine is most suitable to their circumstances.

I congratulate all our parish ministries and groups who have learned to use ZOOM and other teleconferencing platforms to continue their great work! Even this ‘Old Dog’ has learned these new tricks!

Our Music Ministries are closely following Archdiocesan guide-lines concerning singing. Our singers and musicians are doing a great job! More readers and Eucharistic Ministers are likewise returning to active ministry as these good folks discern their comfort with returning to public worship. We are not yet inviting Ushers or Altar Servers to return. The role of Ushers may change a lot in the emerging environment of the post-COVID church.

Your generous Stewardship regarding the Sunday Offering is one of the best experiences of this pandemic time. I continue to encourage e-Giving especially through the Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia (CFGP). These folks have been great at forwarding your financial gifts and sending us details of dona-tions. Fr. Fitzpatrick

If you are able, please support Saint Peter Parish through the Parish Support Initiative. This initiative is made possible through a partner-ship with The Catholic Foundation of Greater Phil-adelphia. Scan this code and select “Saint Pe-ter West Brandywine” from the drop-down menu. Your support will ensure that we can continue our work through these uncertain times. Thank you for your continued support of our parish family and God bless!

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 25 & 26, 2020

First Reading 1 Kings 3: 5, 7 - 12 The LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream at night. God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” Solomon answered: “O LORD, my God, you have made me, your servant, king to succeed my father David; but I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act. I serve you in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a people so vast that it cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?” The LORD was pleased that Solomon made this request. So God said to him: “Because you have asked for this— not for a long life for yourself, nor for riches, nor for the life of your enemies, but for understanding so that you may know what is right—I do as you requested. I give you a heart so wise and understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to now, and after you there will come no one to equal you.”

Responsorial: Psalm 119

R. Lord, I love your commands.

Second Reading Romans 8: 28 - 30

Brothers and sisters: We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.

Gospel Matthew 13:44 - 52 Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind. When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. “Do you understand all these things?” They answered, “Yes.” And he replied, “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”

Guide Book Advertising Opportunity

Saint Peter Church is in the process of updating our annual Guide Book. This handbook contains everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, functions, and events that take place at Saint Peter. The book is being provided and direct-mailed to each registered family at no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our handbook, please call the Church Office.

Guide Book Publishing states that most parish families will refer to, and would rather patronize, a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It will pay to advertise in our annual Saint Peter Parish Guide Book!

And some great news...our annual survey of families leaving the pantry in 2020 yielded the best results ever...Over 40% achieved food sufficiency through employment and/or adequate income/savings.

The community response to our efforts has been outstanding and our tremendous volunteer team continues to be the back-bone of the organization, working safely under extremely challenging conditions. anyone who is presently undergoing treatment, has com-pleted treatment, is a family member and/or caregiver. Our next meeting is Saturday, August 8, at 11 a.m.

Caring for Friends: Cooks: Thank you for your generosity in preparing meals over the last few months. Those meals have been suf-ficient to get us through to this point in the summer when the supply usually diminishes

considerably. Now it seems that the meals are starting to slow down so if anyone has meals you keep forgetting to bring to the freezer, please try to bring them. And please do not forget we have one person who has a need for low salt meals. If some of you can refrain from adding salt, it would be appreciated. Then put a ribbon around the meals so the visitors can easily recognize them. Remember to put freezer #137 on the menu even if there is not a line for it. Visitors: Thanks for your continued dedication in taking meals to your friends during these difficult times. Please remember that any meals with the ribbons are low salt and refrain from taking them unless absolutely necessary. Any questions, please fell free to call Ellen at 610-384-7160 or email [email protected].

Nourish for Caregivers (formerly Caregivers Support Group) meet in the Bethany Lounge. We recognize that virtually everyone of us will care for a loved one at some point in our lives. Nourish provides caregivers
