THE GOOD NEWSREFLECTION FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Parishioners,
As I write this letter for you, I just heard of the news that we have a new bishop for the Diocese of Cleveland (by now this is probably old news to you). He is Bishop Edward Malesic from the Greensburg, Pennsylvania Diocese. He officially becomes the 12th Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland on September 14, 2020.
One parishioner told me in the parking lot yesterday that he was hoping that I would be named the new bishop. I told him, “No one in their right mind would want that job.” People in positions of authority today do not have an easy job. Please continue to pray for all our leaders in our church and our government, that the Holy Spirit will guide them in all their decision making. We will pray for our new Bishop Malesic that God will bless his ministry here and make it very fruitful.
I watched the news conference announcing the new bishop and his first remarks. I was very impressed with his humility and giftedness in articulating the faith. I am sure the good Lord is blessing our diocese with this wonderful new bishop.
Of other things…
Congratulations to our second graders who have made their First Holy Communion the last two weekends. May their love for Jesus truly present in the Eucharist grow every day. God bless all their families, and especially their parents, who are the first teachers of their children in the ways of the faith. May they always be the best of teachers, bearing witness to their faith by what they say and do.
We want to remind you that at the 11:00 a.m. Mass this coming Sunday, August 2nd, we will have a special tribute to all our graduating seniors. They will be treated, along with their families, to a free lunch in the PLC. Please call the office to let us know if you are coming and how many in your family will join you or sign-up on our website at www.queenofheavenparish.org/upper-room.
Today’s Gospel compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a treasure buried in a field or a pearl of great price, meaning what a precious gift our faith is, and may we always be joy-filled and enthused in living our faith. Someone in this parish who had such awesome joy and enthusiasm in his faith and we recently had to give back to God was Paul Bukovesky. Paul was our youth minister for 40 years and our custodian for at least 15 years. He touched many, many lives by his upbeat, positive, outgoing personality and genuine faith.
May God bless his soulmate and best friend, his wife of 46 years, Beth. May God be good to her and to all of Paul’s family and friends. May his soul and the souls of all the faithfully departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
God bless you all,
Father Dave Durkee
P.S. Christmas is only five months away from today. Are you ready? (Ha ha!)

THE FEAST DAY OF ST. ANNE AND SAINT JOACHIM IS SUNDAY, JULY 26TH
(Parents of Our Blessed Mother Mary and Grandparents of Jesus)
Saints Joachim and Anne are the Patron Saints of:Grandparents
Saint Anne is the Patron Saint of:Mothers
Women in LaborBarren Women
This is the “feast of grandparents.” It reminds grandparents of their responsibility to establish a tone for generations to come: They must make the traditions live and offer them as a promise to little children. But the feast has a message for the younger generation as well. It reminds the young that older people’s greater perspective, depth of experience, and appreciation of life’s profound rhythms are all part of a wisdom not to be taken lightly or ignored. PRAYER TO SAINTS ANNE AND JOACHIMO Holy Mother and Father of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as parents, you guided and nurtured Mary and, under your protection and love, watched her grow in holiness.Through your faithfulness and goodness, the Will of God was fulfilled; the fruits of your virtue and faith brought salvation to the whole world with the birth of the baby Jesus.
“The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.”
(John 1:14)Most Holy Saints Anne and Joachim, come close to us and guide our hands and our hearts in the way of virtue.Help us to parent our children and grandchildren with a gentle heart as you did.Show us how to raise our children in faith and bring our families into the Light of Jesus.Remain close to us and help us on our journey to salvation.Saints Anne and Joachim, we place our petitions in your hands and ask that you lay them before the child Jesus.Seek this, my favor [mention your request] but only if it be for the greater glory of God and the good of my soul.Pray: Our Father…, Hail Mary…, Glory be to the Father….St. Anne and St. Joachim: Pray for Us

What does it mean to form my conscience? Catholics have a long tradition of engagement in the public square. Sometimes that engagement requires making difficult moral decisions that impact our own lives and those of others. Our conscience can help guide the decisions we make. The Second Vatican Council guides us: “Always summoning [one] to love good and avoid evil, the voice of conscience can when necessary speak to [one’s] heart more specifically: do this, shun that” (Gaudium et Spes 16). However, our conscience doesn’t just come to us when we are born. We must work throughout our lives to form it through prayer, learning, and conversation.
How do I form my conscience?
It takes time to form our consciences so that we can make well-reasoned judgments about particular, real-life situations. The Church teaches that it is important to work continually on conscience formation so we can be prepared to make decisions whenever the opportunity arises. Some specific ideas to form your conscience are:
1) Begin by being open to the truth and what is right.
2) Study Sacred Scripture and the teaching of the Church.
3) Examine the facts and background information about various choices and be discerning in where we gather information.
4) Prayerfully reflect to discern the will of God (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, no. 18).
Additionally, it is important to consider how
1 Catechism of the Catholic Church (2nd ed.). Washington, DC: Libreria Editrice Vaticana–United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), 2000, no 1777
our community of faith can help us form good consciences through some of these steps:
1) Seek the prudent advice and good example of trusted leaders and others to support and enlighten our conscience.
2) Learn about the authoritative teaching of the Church.
3) Pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit to help us develop our conscience.
4) Regularly partake in an examination of conscience to hear God’s voice in your life.1
Doing the work of forming our consciences can seem daunting. Fortunately, we have many church teachings that can help us in this important task. Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship is an important resource for U.S. Catholics and helps us prayerfully reflect on how we can apply Church teaching in our civic life. “Conscience is not something that allows us to justify doing whatever we want, nor is it a mere "feeling" about what we should or should not do. Rather, conscience is the voice of God resounding in the human heart, revealing the truth to us and calling us to do what is good while shunning what is evil.”2
Here are some questions for further reflection:
1. When has my conscience guided me to “do good and avoid evil”?
2. What are some key resources I can use to form my conscience?
3. Forming conscience is a “lifelong task.” What do I do to regularly form my conscience? What more should I do?
