John 13:18-30THE DISCIPLE WHOM JESUS LOVED

John 13:18-30 (NKJV) Jesus Identifies His Betrayer

• 18 “I do not speak concerning all of you.I know whom I have chosen; but that theScripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eatsbread with Me[a] has lifted up his heelagainst Me.”

• 19 Now I tell you before it comes, that when itdoes come to pass, you may believe that Iam He.

• 20 Most assuredly, I say to you, he whoreceives whomever I send receives Me; and hewho receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

• 21 When Jesus had said these things, He wastroubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Mostassuredly, I say to you, one of you will betrayMe.” 22 Then the disciples looked at oneanother, perplexed about whom He spoke.Jesus does not reveal the identity of thebetrayer.

The disciple whom Jesus lovedJohn 13: 23-2623 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke. 25 Then, leaning back[c] on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

John 13:27-30

27 Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. 29 For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those thingswe need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.

Why did Judas betray Jesus?

- Was disappointed with Jesus for not starting a revolution to overthrow the Roman occupation; not the Messiah or

- Because Judas was angry with Jesus for rebuking and humiliating him; John 12:7-8; or

- Even though he was a disciple but because of money and greed he betrayed Jesus;

“Cannot preach and teach prosperity in church, lead Christians to fall away.”

Judas betrayed Jesus because Judas was an unbeliever

1. Jesus said he was unclean , John 13:10-1110 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs

only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”

• All clean and saved except Judas;• Even Peter who would deny and curse Jesus

was clean;• Goes to show Peter had genuine faith in Jesus

though not so strong at that time as apposed to Judas;

2. He was a thief• -The bible called him a thief - Not concerned

for the poor John12:3-8;Took money from treasury box. He said Mary should sell the perfume and give it to the poor;

John 12:6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.

• There are some people who call themselves Christians for ulterior motives i.e. to take advantage of God’s people.

• i.e. Ananias and Sapphire who died trying to do that. Acts 5

• But we are always protected by God from these people. No weapon formed against you shall prosper ; Isaiah 54:17

3. Greed. Money was his lord and master• Betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. The

bible called Judas a thief because he stole from the treasury box;

• When we make money our god, idol & goal then we get into trouble;‘For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, ….’ 1 Tim 6:10;

• Money is not the problem. In fact money is vital and important. God has given it to us to bless us and to be a blessing;

-

“Judas fell because of money. “• We get a lot of flack/ criticism for mentioning

the word prosperity and money in church. Equate prosperity = love money, shallow Christians. Already established Judas not a believer;

“Cannot preach and teach prosperity in church-lead Christians to fall away.”

• People who oppose prosperity being mentioned in church usually very rich themselves or try to be prosperous some other way.

• “God does not guarantee supply and provision; prosperity is not for all”;

• look elsewhere; our ability, resources, wisdom, bosses, guru, world economy, fengshui; look to men for help. Selected few.

• that is why no interest in the word of God; not relevant to their problems and difficulties.

• Going to church and the reading the bible is just to point out sins and faults and telling us what we can do and we can’t do.

• Need to hear and believe the truth to set us free; wash our feet

Prosperity blessing in the OT

• God brought the Israelites out from slavery in Egypt with gold and silver;

• Joshua 1:7-8 “that you may prosper wherever you go. .............. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” Prosper in v. 7– “sakal “ = to prosper and good success;Prosperous in v. 8 – “tsalach” = be profitable

• Oxford Concise Dictionary 7th Ed.; prosperous = to be thriving, successful, flourishing

• Prosperous – Pastor Peter - having enough to bless others without feeling pain

Prosperity in the New Covenant• Prosperity = blessing; mentioned in Old and

New Covenant;

• But in the New Covenant we are all blessed and prosperous because of Jesus not because of whether we are good or bad;

2 Corinthians 8:9“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.”

No reason why Believers cannot be Prosperous

• Apostle John towards the end of his ministry prays for prosperity in 3 John :2

• “2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. “

• Not to seek after the gift/prosperity but the giver/Jesus ; i.e. Peter in John 21;

• All can prosper in all things because Jesus has paid for it!!!

Difference between Judas and PeterJUDAS (unbeliever)

• Betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver

• Returned the money and hung himself-worldly repentance

• Suicide one form self-righteousness and works- under law

PETER (believer)

• Denied Jesus 3 times and cursed His name

• Jesus restored Peter and appointed him head of the church-shows him love and unmerited favor

• Under grace- there is no fear of falling away. Jesus is responsible to keep us safe and sound

There is no fear of losing our salvation

1.Jesus is responsible to keep us safe and sound;

• John 10:27-29: "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. "And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. "My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.

There is no fear of losing our salvation2. New Covenant initiated and made by God;

Hebrews 8:10 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My lawsinto their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,”

3. God has forgiven all our sins, past, present and future; Colossians 2:13-14;’..having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us…on the cross’

4. Jesus restores Peter and the prodigal son by showing favor and blessings to them, no rebuke; John 21, Prodigal son ; Luke 15
