SAh! Spring!! AT LAST!

Spring has always been myfavorite season, mostly becauseof the emergence of new lifeand fresh growth from the

dormancy of winter. The days aregetting longer, and there's a wholesummer ahead - yep, this is my time ofyear!

Through the winter JO LEE readershave been as busy as ever filling theMav's mailbag - thank you all forwriting. It's a great privilege to havethe opportunity to reply to youremails. And it seems that, as usual, many have been thinking a lot aboutcareers…

Q: Erin D. asks: "Mav, how do I getsome balance in my life? I feel like I'mbeing required to work longer hoursso I don't even have a life outside ofwork!"

A: You're not alone, Erin. Manypeople feel the same way -overwhelmed by work pressure -and it's become an even biggerchallenge over the past couple ofyears as companies have cut coststo stay competitive.

It's what I call 'the backlash ofproductivity': fewer people have todo more work and theircompanies don't help by reducingunnecessary work or by providingnew ways of getting the workdone in less time.

So you have to find those waysyourself. Here's what I'd do: for aperiod of two weeks, record whatyou're actually doing in every 15-minute segment of each day. Then

summarize those activities intocategories of work and figure out whatpercentage of each day you spenddoing what kind of activity.

I guarantee you're going to be quitesurprised by some of what you learn -the obvious example is how muchtime you spend on emails. But youshould be able to immediately identifysome things you yourself can do to useyour time better. Then take youranalysis to your boss and ask him orher to help you manage your timeeven better.

And if that still doesn't reduce yourworkload, then you have to decidewhether or not any job is moreimportant than having a life away fromwork.

You'll know the right answer!

Q: Carlos M. asks: "I don't know whatto do with my career, Mav. I feel likeI need to make a change but I don'tknow what I really want to do next."

A: First thing, Carlos, is to go to yourlocal bookstore and buy a copy of thecareer 'bible', a book called "WhatColor Is My Parachute?" It's a classic, and is always being updated so it's stillone of the best career-help books you'llfind. Then make the time to gothrough it, do the self-assessmentexercises, and be open to all kinds ofpossibilities!

If you want to take it one step further- this will cost more, but it may beworth it to you - find a local careercounselor who will help you identifyyour attributes and aptitudes, and willhelp you define a new career direction.

Good luck!

Q: Jan R. asks: "Many of the values inmy workplace seem to be totallyopposite to my personal values. Do Ijust bite my tongue and accept that asthe way it is?"

A: No, Jan, you NEVER accept valuesthat are in conflict with your own.

Your values are one of the mostprecious things that you have. They areyour DNA. They are the signposts thatguide you through your entire life. Youare not living your own values if youcompromise them every day at work.

This is really important, Jan. Be true toyour own values in everything you do.Accept nothing less. Ever!

Until next time…

CCharles Dickens could nothave imagined a moreharrowing, brutalchildhood than that

afflicted upon Thomas FrancesStickelmyer. Born on Friday, June 3,1927 in Troy, New York: to an alcoholicfather and a hapless mother. From thebeginning Thomas was plagued withdifficulty: encephalitis, frail health and anervous stutter: a joke to his brothers,he attempted to avoid their bullying.Throughout those early years, seeinghimself as an ugly duckling, withoutself esteem, unhappily, he went toschool until the 11th grade. {Inmaturity becoming an intellectualamassing rare religious books} Failingmost subjects, while exhibiting a talentfor art, he expressed his loneliness inpaintings. Having no close friends fromthe age of nine Thomas soughtsanctuary within Saint Francis D. Saleschurch. There he felt acceptanceamong silent statues that looked down.

Advancing into teenage years, hehumbly took jobs wherever he could. His looks improved, although hisconfidence did not. One girl set hersights on him, pursuing him at work.Toescape from home, hungry foraffection, he married her at age twentyone. She appeared to love him and likea lost puppy he responded. They tooktheir vows, albeit practically strangers.

Too soon they had six children. Thefirst two boys died in infancy. Headored his third son Thomas Jr. as hedid his three daughters: Janet, Mary Joand Charlene. But, hard as he tried, hislack of education positioned him intomenial work, often as hospital orderly, scrubbing, brush in hand on his knees, suffering humiliating workingconditions and low wages: years later inAids and Psychiatric wards.

His restless wife demanding more, began deceiving him. Thomas, believing his children could have a Gene and Brother Thomas outside the 'Honneur et Patrie' in San Francisco

more affluent life, agreed to aseparation.Without his knowledge shedivorced him, remarried, obtainingcustody of the children. Thomas, achieving an annulment from Rome, searching for meaning - wandered, exploring religious orders. Seekingsolitary contemplation, haunted by theseparation from his children, he entereda monastery - becoming a Trappistmonk at Our Lady of GethsemaniKentucky. {Alongside author ThomasMerton} Pursuing truth he foundidealism - disillusioned he left.

At age 68, while living at BethlehemTowers, Santa Rosa, Mother MargaretCharles offered him a place asChaplain's Assistant with Little Sistersof the Poor, San Francisco. There hesaid he would be close to theEucharist, and there I met him.Completely dissimilar, I coming from ashow- business background, observed

him at the altar: his childlikeinnocence, his fun with residents, hiswork in therapy, his love towardeveryone over the next three years. Now, with silver-white andcompassionate blue eyes, he had aluminosity that enhanced his biblicallyhandsome face.

Suddenly, as if lightning struck, a latentbrain tumor led to an operation.Whilerecovering in the hospital - the newMother Superior Marie Christine, asmall robotic woman, visited him onDecember 22, 1998: to give him aneviction notice.Writing to me "we arelosing money on him. This would beadditional expense". Ignoring the$100,000.00 given to her on our behalfby our friend Arthur Fritz. December29, 1998 she sent Thomas a check forone dollar and fifty five cents for overpayment on his room.

Thomas welcomed her, believing shecame to tell him to come back forChristmas. Witnesses described thescene as pitiless, saying she could'vecaused a stroke. When I arrived, heartbroken all he could say was, "Idon't deserve this".

Hypocritically, she went against vowsof her order; to care for the elderly, impoverished, infirm.Although I foundthose virtues while staying with LittleSisters in London. Dr. Chan beggedMother to take Thomas back to afamiliar place with residents he knew, employees he befriended. Priests at St.Anne's said masses for "my martyredfriend." Mother Christine's inseparablecohort Sister Diane packed Thomas'sreligious artifacts, cassock, children'sphotographs to send to storage.Younger nuns were opposed buthelpless. Christine claimed they had noroom yet they had access within a three

story luxurious building on a sevenacre estate, in the neighborhood ofSenator Diane Feinstein.

A story appeared in the Chronicle inThomas's defense. Archdiocesespokesman Maurice Healy, vilified usin print hinting at an immoral affair - aChildren's Hour scenario-lies to justifyMother's actions for the sake of moneychanging. I warned Christine thatretribution would surely follow. It didwhen the church had to pay outmillions to victims abused by clergy.Healy, hid under his desk. Their greedand power began to collapse.Again, Dr.Chan implored Mother to reverse herdecision explaining how dangerouslythis would hinder Thomas's recovery. That he would come under thedubious care of over crowded, understaffed nursing homes. She ignoredhim, a woman who could turn DeathValley into glaciers.

Adrift and helpless,Thomas transferredfrom one nursing home to another

within four years, where, irresponsiblenegligence caused three falls thatdestroyed his power of speech andability to walk. Father O'Byrne said "itwas a long crucifixion". When his soncame to see him - his father's eyesshone, expressing his emotionseloquently.

I was determined to reunite him withhis daughters. A dream, fatefullydenied, unknowingly this was to be hislast year. An interfering social worker,Mr. Lucas, involved San FranciscoPublic Guardians. Another nail in thecross. My rightful Power of Attorneywas finally restored to me too late! Ibrought him home to our apartment,Pilgrim Plaza, January 3, 2003. Threedays later he died in my presence: hissaintly face hauntingly radiant.

Had Marie Christine shown mercy likethe founder in France of Little Sisters,Jeanne Jugan, who carried an oldwoman up flights of stairs, giving upher bed to her, proclaiming "… be

good to the aged, especially the infirm.Love them - be kind".Thomas's endingwould have been different.

Since then Marie Christine hastransferred: leaving a dead man in herwake, who only wanted a chance torecover, to serve God. Thiscongregation has 250 homes in 30countries. Brother Thomas, thissacrificial lamb, was the only residentever evicted in over a century.

JO LEE: Dr. Jonathan Levine - I'vebeen so excited ever since firstdiscovering you two years ago whenyou created the revolutionarywhitening product - which has solvedthe 'bane of my existence': teethwhitening. No more day orovernight plates, expensivelaser but a strong, effective method thattakes seconds toapply - atoffice/home orwhen dining out, after dinner.

Jonathan - how,do you do it?As Business 2.0has said: it's thehunch! Has itbeen yourg u t / y o u rhunch that's ledyou intot r e m e n d o u ssuccesses at thisearly age?

JONATHAN LEVINE: Jo Lee, mymotivation for developing GoSMILE iswrapped into two words. My patients. You know, an overnight success in '20long years'.

As a serious clinician, understandingthe needs/the wants of my patientsdrove tremendous creativity into 'thenow'. Excite the masses, I thought.Design a tooth whitener that's not onlyportable, tiny and easy BUT … with aningredient that whitensIMMEDIATELY. Not, in time!

People today, Jo Lee, do not have time. Why then, would they pause foranything less than speed! Over thecounter products can be a great adjunctto professional care especially with aproduct that has true actives that reallyprotects the hard tissues of the mouth.

JO LEE: Jonathan - you've becomethis amazing Aesthetic Professional. And it began in your early career as theAll American Lacrosse champion while

studying Prosthodontics. Youwent on to

become this

outstanding mind in internationallecturing, and today, your creation ofGoSMILE - tooth whitening on the go- has hugged millions, exceedingwildest expectations.

Dr., Business 2.0 has also said that theminds of great universities could neverteach THE HUNCH. It's an innergift/an instinct that the masses do nothave -

JONATHAN: Jo Lee, I believe wehave to be keen observers and greatlisteners. The creative process workswell when our minds are open to whatcan be possible. In all oral care, thereare new categories being developed, just as we did with: tooth whitening onthe go. These hunches become ideasthat develop out of the creative process. It is then up to us, what we do withthem.

JO LEE: As a young boy, growing upon the South shore of New York's LongIsland, do you recollect when first itwas, you dreamed of engulfing aperson's presence? Where did thebelief of 'a smile being one's greatestpersonal asset' come from?

JONATHAN: I was very fortunate tofocus on the smile in my career. Notjust teeth. I've always tried to improvea person's appearance through subtle, yet dramatic changes in their smile. The large oral care companies such asColgate and Proctor and Gamble arespending millions of dollars to createawareness for tooth whitening. Thebaby boomers want to lookyounger/feel better. This accounts for

77 million Americans and thedramatic results of the new

break-through toothwhitening technology.

JO LEE: Jonathan, this issurreal. I had guessed the

numbers to be highyet never

did I

calculate this figure. Is this then, whyyour hunch/your gut urged you to getinto the 'smile business' against all otherbusinesses you could have framed? And perhaps too, it was yourcompetitive years as an athlete that hadyou take up the gauntlet?

JONATHAN: When I was at CornellUniversity, Jo Lee, I was very fortunateto play on a National Championshiplacrosse team which impacted myoverall attitude to 'best the best' inwhatever career I chose. Choosingdentistry was more of an educatedguess to a field that blended science, art, and technology. However, it wasn'tuntil I graduated from dental schoolthat I began formulating exactly what Iwould be doing in this field.

By way of luck, I learned aboutporcelain veneers from the technician

Obsessed! With white teeth

who invented them. Myfriend and colleague, AdrianJurim. Adrian and I wereamong the first professionalsin the country to applyporcelain to patients. At thetime, I was just out of dentalschool with no preconceivednotions that I wasn'texperienced enough to dothe work. Nor did I doubtthe technique. I simplybelieved that I could becreative and exacting and …the technology was excellent.Again, I was fortunate to beright. Today, twenty yearslater, I've focused on creatingthe most beautiful smiles, expanding my knowledgeand constantly challengingconventional thinking -always looking to see what ispossible.

JO LEE: Jonathan - you arethe leader in turning 'yellow'into a white, elegant look! What were some of yourbiggest challenges?

JONATHAN: Doing it right fromthe beginning. As in any endeavor, I'vealways found that building the teamand finding the right people is the mostchallenging. We've developed afantastic team and have taken our newproducts from conception to creationin 6 months as opposed to largerCompanies taking 18-24. With theCompany President and genius behindthe packaging and marketing of thebrand being my wife, Stacey, everythingStacey has done has gotten her ready topivot us into becoming the first oralcare company to live in the Cosmeticindustry and on the beauty floors ofthe specialty doors like NeimanMarcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue,Sephora, Henri Bendel.

JO LEE: Jonathan, what are thechanges happening in the toothwhitening business? Like the airlineand high speed passenger rail industry… is 'your' business becoming more

exciting for those 'in the business' anddoes this mean it's becoming morecompetitive for you. In other words -are you becoming more global?

JONATHAN: Jo lee, toothwhitening has great momentum today! The industry was a 30 million dollarbusiness 3 years ago. It's almost abillion dollars today. There are newcompetitors entering this space all thetime, but we have created a: luxurysmile care empire!

JO LEE: How different, Jonathan, isthis global world of aesthetic necessitytoday, to when you first began yourcareer some twenty years ago?

JONATHAN: Because of theinternet and the sharing of informationbeing so much faster and moreeffective, the world of aestheticdentistry, much like other worlds, is ashared one. What we do in New York,is done in Los Angeles, in Paris, inLondon, in Switzerland. However, the

United States appears tohave the greatest demandfor a more beautiful smile. But I dare say - the rest ofthe world is catching up.China, Hong Kong Japan,Brazil and Argentina.Countries where theCosmetic industry thrivesare understanding thewhitening valueproposition, launched inthe U.S.

JO LEE: Jonathan, onecan't flip on the radio, television, glance at amagazine, newspaperwithout WHITE TEETHappearing in the imagebefore us. Is the toothwhitening business onethat's constantly beinginvaded by pseudoproducts professing to be:more advanced, moresimplistic? And are thesemake-believe advances

such that you're constantlybeing faced with the need

of increased creativity to remain aheadof the billion dollars spent on 'at-hometooth whitening' in 2003?

JONATHAN: Similar to all earlyindustries, there are a number ofcompanies that jump-in at thebeginning.

At GoSMILE, we are a Companydedicated to launching 2-3 newproducts per year through inventiveinnovation - making it easy for anyone,to have a great smile. A new categoryin oral care - not seen before. We'vegained significant traction in carvingout a specific niche. Currently, we haveno competition.

Our 'tooth whitening on the go' hasbeen followed by our duo tubes ofAM/PM toothpaste - establishing thatjoie de vivre of freshness. It's quite theexperience.

JO LEE: Tell me about: the oral careexperience?

GoSMILE! The ampoule ingredientthat whitens IMMEDIATELY

JONATHAN: When we talk aboutthe oral care experience, we mean thatthe consumer needs to elevate theirexperience to a point where theyactually look forward to brushing orflossing their teeth or rinsing orpopping a breath mint.

This experience will insure that theperson does it consistently over timewhich is the difference betweensuccess and failure. That is, the successof having white teeth or achieving ahealthy smile. Our AM/PMtoothpaste is a perfect example of theoral care experience. To elevate toothbrushing from the mundane to boring- to one that you are excited andp l e a s u r e dwith.

JO LEE: Weall knowabout 'theo t h e r 's t r a t e g i cmind that co-f o u n d e dGoSMILE and whose passionand personality have helpeddrive your incrediblesuccesses! Your wife, Stacey. Can you share how this allcame about? Were you just sitting bythe fire one night, realizing how thered wine with strawberries was stainingyour teeth ~

JONATHAN: Well, I was a guest onThe View - America's #1 daytimetelevision show, demonstrating newtechnology in dentistry. Of course, Itoo, began talking about a product I'dbeen using in my office for 5 yearswhich product, was the precursor toGoSmile called: Enhanced.

We had hundreds of phone calls.Everyone wanted: Enhanced. Thislaunched the idea of taking thisportable whitener in the ampoule outto the public. Stacey saw this productfor the specialty doors and we began toformulate a plan to distribute in thischannel. It was my 13 year old son

JO LEE: Wow, what a feat, huh.Jonathan, what about: the dilemma ofcolorful wines and foods on teeth. Westeer clear of carbs and then - whenwe're introduced to what we can eat, many of these foods stain badly! What'sthe trick?

JONATHAN: You don't have to stayclear of chromagenic foods{blueberries, strawberries, soy sauce}or red wine, as long as you have awhitener that you will use consistently.

GoSMILE is a true whitener! Andafter you've achieved the shade youwant, it becomes a simple, maintenanceproduct. Depending on the amount ofstained food you ingest, will help youfigure out how often you need to use

GoSMILE as a whitener. 1-2 times perweek will maintain your smile -without worrying about the wine orthe java.

JO LEE: It's all quite remarkable,Jonathan, to step outside the blue print

of a handsomemouth andappreciate from adifferent plateau, the wisdomrequired behindthe productconfiguration of:that white smile.Design / delivery/ results!Jonathan, howmuch is successrelated to thebelief, thecamaraderie ofone's personalfamily applaudingthe man/wifewho's dream theywant made intoreality?

When I search theglobe for successstories, I'm struck

with the numbers linking growth toties within their personal lives. Iobviously reflect then, upon you ~

JONATHAN: Jo Lee, as you'vealready heard, GoSMILE is a familyaffair.

I left out my other son Cody, who waswith Stacey, when sitting with a make-up artist in Henri Bendel. Cody beganbragging about our {.com} GoSMILE- that Stacey was carrying in her bag.The make-up artist went crazy over theproduct/took Stacey to the buyer andbrought it into the store. Saks FifthAvenue followed - with every one oftheir stores.

Our family has been involved from thebeginning and continues to beinvolved day to day. Julian, now 15, is incharge of naming our new products.

DR. B: What's the story with HDL cholesterol?

A: Medicine has focused on lowering bad cholesterol {LDL} levels, knows that HDL{good cholesterol} is a different risk factor and separate from other cholesterolmeasurements. It is clear that those with high HDL cholesterol do much better in termsof the incidence of coronary artery disease. Many people have low HDL levels which putsthem at risk. New drugs are being developed, modeled from HDL and studies have shownsignificant reductions in arterial plaque with the early versions of the drugs. The reductionsoccur quickly which has given the medical system a wake up call and pointed out that thecoronary bed is far more dynamic than thought. Everyone should know their TotalCholesterol, LDL and HDL {and their blood pressure}.

DR. B: What are your thoughts on the medical crisis in America? Is anyone party at fault?

A: Frankly, I have almost given up on it. We desperately need universal healthcare. Theinsurance companies are controlling many parts of how health care is practiced and whatwill, and won't, be paid for. I have no idea as to what their profit margins are but it mustbe large. Physicians are influenced by what is and isn't paid for and spend vast sums of moneypracticing safe medicine. They are angry and frustrated which can lessen the quality of carepatients receive. Drug use is out of control with drug companies stimulating demand andjustifying enormous costs as being cost effective. If I were to choose a word for ourhealthcare system: it would be greed. All vested parties are at fault and theAmerican public fails themselves by pressing for more and taking terrible care of themselves.

DR. B: Is it true that pain from the heart goes to the ring finger?

A: It sure can! This is an interesting question because the basis for the wedding ring restswith that finger being closest to the heart. Physicians of old knew this because patientswith angina or a heart attack would complain of pain in that finger.

DR. B: Hey, 911.What's the best thing to do if you develop chest pain andyou think it's your heart?

A: Take an aspirin and have someone take you immediately to the nearest emergencyroom. The first minutes of a heart attack are the most dangerous. If you are wrong aboutit being your heart, it is still the best decision. The aspirin has an effect on platelets and theirability to stick and form a clot. I suggest that you do some studying about chest pain!

Aspirin is best when chest pain develops

DR. B: Is the Atkins diet back in vogue? Isn't he dead?

A:What's happening rests with the realization that low sugar, low carbohydrate, low highglycemic diets really help a person to lose weight. It gets into the realization that mostAmericans have insulin resistance and an increasing understanding of how insulin resistanceeffects fat cells. Cut off the sugar and exercise more! Dr.Atkins recently died from a veryunfortunate fall. He was onto more than many people gave him credit.

Be well!Dr. B.

WWalk into the maze ofkiosks in a departmentstore cosmetic sectionand what do you see?

Scores of skin care lotions and potionspromising to offer younger lookingskin, age reversing ingredients -everything just short of eternal youth. How do you decide, who do youbelieve and will these products workfor your skin?

As part owner and Vice President ofBIOPHORA, Science made Simple,an international medically advancedskin care company, I wondered thesame thing seven years ago: I wasplagued by fine lines, sun damage andhyperpigmentation: skin conditions ofmany sun worshipers from southernCalifornia. I tried one skin careproduct line after another to actively

reduce the signs of exposure to theelements that I accumulated after manyjoyous years growing up on the beach. To get the results I wanted, I wouldhave to become more aggressive thansuccumbing to over the counterproducts. Although the cosmetic skincare products have their place for skinmaintenance, they weren't meeting myneeds.

In 1996 - I founded an Americanmedical product line that did make adifference and along with businesspartners, brought the distributorship toToronto, Canada. There, the success ofthe business provided a runway for thedevelopment of BIOPHORA, atechnically advanced medical skin peelprogram combined with an effective,results-oriented home skin care regimefor aging, sun/element exposed skin,

fine lines, acne, hyperpigmentation andsensitive skin conditions. The newbusiness team, including, the ManagingDirector of International Sales andEducation, Scott Greenwood, alongwith a product development expert, ananti-aging medical specialist, plasticsurgeon, naturopath and chemist, created the line to address most skinconditions effectively and holistically.

Today - I'm elated: the BIOPHORAphilosophy promotes a healthy lifestyle;proper rest, sufficient water intake, exercise, supplementation and stressmanagement. We want our patients toget the best possible result. The skin isnot an isolated organ. It isinterdependent on the entire health ofthe organism as a whole.

The BIOPHORA system involves aseries of medical peels using glycolic,

The home care program consists ofsimple steps which cleanse, stimulate, exfoliate and protect or nourish theskin. The aggressive exfoliation, whichrids the skin of dead cellular debris, isbalanced with the replacement ofessential nutrients.

Canadian manufactured BIOPHORAis strongly on the map in the medicalsector for treating and improving skinconditions. Recently introduced tothe international market, BIOPHORAis now in Greece, New Zealand,Australia, Ireland, Hong Kong and theUSA, with head offices in Toronto andIreland.

BIOPHORA sells to plastic surgeons, dermatologists and generalpractitioners that span North Americafrom coast to coast. Tilda Peltz, clinical esthetician andmanager of the Medical Spa for theBeresford Clinic, in Toronto, workingwith Dr. Frank Beninger, cosmeticplastic surgeon, emphatically endorsesthe treatment protocols. "I had aserious car accident a year ago", statesPeltz. "My face was superficiallyburned and damaged by an airbag. After healing I had residualhyperpigmentation and a rare acne

condition. I used BIOPHORAextensively on my own skin and foundthat both conditions cleared updramatically."

Building an international skin carebusiness is not all glamour. As a team,we've overcome some difficultchallenges. But most importantly - theproducts work. Not only did I get theskin I wanted, we developed a range ofproducts that people from all over theworld can use to transform their skin tolook healthier and younger.

WWhen Ian Sorbie andTony Ragoexperienced the thincrust 'gourmet' pizza

that was the sensation of the Big Apple, they knew they had discovered themain ingredient for a winning formula.Returning to Toronto, plans were madeto open a restaurant with two associatesfrom their already successful Beachesarea restaurant. Named after "TheLittle Oven" that was not only themethod of cooking their deliciouspizzas, but also the centerpiece of therestaurant's design: IL FORNELLOopened its first restaurant in April,1986. Seventeen years and nineToronto locations later, the four are stilltogether.

With a background in child care work,Ian Sorbie, President of ILFORNELLO Restaurants, opened hisfirst restaurant, the BeechTree Café, in1982 to realize a dream of being hisown boss. A supporter of the arts, andon the Board of some of Toronto's mostprestigious arts organizations, he too, isa Director for the renowned TorontoInternational Film Festival. In 1992, hewas awarded the Canada 125 medal forspearheading an inner city schoolnutrition program fully funded by ILFORNELLO Restaurants, and in 1997he received the Ontario HostelryInstitute's Gold Award in recognitionof his influence in hospitality and foodexcellence.

In high school, Tony Rago, ILFORNELLO Vice-President, was apart-time bartender at a restaurantwhere Ian was a night supervisor.Recognizing Tony's innate 'peopleskills' and positive work ethic, Ianconvinced Tony to help open andmanage the Beach area eatery he hadpurchased.Tony saw an opportunity tolearn, accepted the offer and the rest, asthey say, is history. First attracted toIan's charisma and expertise withpeople,Tony quickly grew to view Ianas a mentor. Now, it's the excitementof creating new spaces, perfectingexisting locations and implementinginnovative ideas that keeps Tonypassionate about IL FORNELLO.

Already a waitress atthe restaurant that becamethe BeechTree Café, in 1982Stacey Patterson began working with Ianand Tony. Today, as Director of Dining RoomOperations for IL FORNELLO, she bounds from locationto location with endless energy. Stacey's devoted to theAlternative Menu, and is astounded at how well they've beenable to manage the company through difficult economictimes. Fuelling her energy is the desire to stay current, settrends and stay one step ahead of her customers, always withtheir best interests in mind.

In 1984 Sean Fleming began as the evening line cook at theBeechTree Café. Impressed by Sean's management skills andfood knowledge, Ian brought him to IL FORNELLO as theDirector of Kitchen Operations. The frenetic pace andconstant changes that are a part of the restaurant businesskeep Sean on his toes anticipating the next challenge. Theultimate testament to success: if he didn't work at ILFORNELLO he would consider it a great place to go.

So,was the launch of ILFORNELLO a success? You bet! Almost overnight ILFORNELLO won raves from critics and earned a legion ofdevoted customers. The genius of IL FORNELLO was infilling a niche with upscale Italian cuisine at reasonableprices. But don't think for a moment that IL FORNELLOis just another chain of restaurants. This is an innovativecompany that breaks the mold.

An industry leader in providing menu items for people withspecial dietary needs, IL FORNELLO features anoutstanding Alternative Menu offering wheat-free, yeast-freeand dairy-free choices, including gluten-free pizza and pasta, seen as a godsend by Celiac sufferers.

Combine excellent food and comfortable ambiance with a philosophy of continuing community involvement, and it's easy to see how IL FORNELLO has woven itself into the fabric of each neighbourhood it calls home.

The success of IL FORNELLO is a result of Ian,Tony, Sean and Stacey's passion for the business and for the cityin which they live. Having expanded into the frozen foods market with a line of frozen pizzas, and with a newlounge at the picturesque Queen's Quay location with its breathtaking view of Lake Ontario - the story of ILFORNELLO is far from finished.

TThe dawn of the knowledgeage', 'the rise of knowledgeeconomies', 'knowledge-based organizations' and

'knowledge workers' are stimulatingbillboards that the media attempt touse/describe the major changeoccurring in our societies.

Working harder used to be key. Today, the cliché is: working smarter. In thesame way, owning more land, labor andcapital was what differentiatedsuccessful businesses and economiesfrom the unsuccessful ones. Today, people, businesses and governments arerealizing that the critical success factorin their ever-competitive environmentsis HOW they manage and takeadvantage of information andknowledge.

Managing information {stored inbooks, databases, etc.} and leveragingknowledge {within people's brains} inorder to achieve personal, professionalor business objectives has led to theformation of the discipline ofKnowledge Management. KM provides aframework or structure for thinkingabout and addressing issues related toinformation and knowledge.

The first question KM addressesevolves around the personal, professional or business objectives andthe role information and knowledgeplay. What needs to be in place tomake a business more productive{produce products and services fasterand cheaper}? How can a scientistcollaborate more effectively with othercolleagues across the globe to develop

innovative technologies? What should agovernment focus on to increase theGDP and promote sustainable growth? How can a student work moreeffectively in order to get admitted to thedesired college? How can a housewifeembrace life-long learning to raisesuperior children?

In order to attain these objectives, KMattempts to identify the informationand knowledge in existence andrequired. Do I know what I need toknow to succeed and attain myobjectives? Where does theinformation that I need reside? Whoare the experts that can help me getthere? Is the information that I usetoday reliable? Can I trust the opinionand advice of the experts? How can Iquickly get access to the 'right'

information that I need to succeed? What is the real value of theinformation that I have or need tohave?

Contrary to the rigid rules andprocesses established and used duringthe industrial age, the way we interactwith today's knowledge workers andknowledge organizations needs to beorganic. Knowledge resides in aperson's head and for knowledgesharing to happen, that person must bewilling to share their knowledge, in ourglobal community, so as to understandthe culture and shared patterns ofbehavior and communication patternsOR we will not be able to establish anenvironment supportive of knowledgeexchange. As a result, one of theimportant KM activities {andchallenges} is to understand thecognitive and emotional dynamics ofindividuals and communities. Vehiclessuch as story-telling and rewardsystems, are imperative.

In an organic environment, knowledgeflows. What one learns - interacts withwhat one already knew - thereforetaking a different shape. 'Many' willinterpret the shared learning in theirown way and apply it accordingly. How

that learning is applied determineswhether the objective is attained. As aresult, KM also deals with processes, routines and relationships in existenceand desired. How information flowsthrough the Internet, databases, books, videos, etc. and how knowledge getsshared among people is of highimportance.

What technologies will drive andaccelerate the KM-related objectivesand support the culture, relationshipsand processes? There are a myriad oftechnologies in existence today that arebeing applied to solving KM problems.Examples of that include technologiesand tools that address collaboration, business intelligence, distance learningand search/retrieval.

We live in the knowledge age.To growas an individual, to compete effectivelyand to contribute to a sustainableenvironment - we need to leverageinformation and expertise moreeffectively. Knowledge Management, asa discipline, provides a framework thatfacilitates this endeavor. KM is notrestricted to a few specialists of thetrade. It is an approach that can be usedby everyone.

Islam and Muslims the new “enemy”

Page 41: JO LEE Magazine · Travel Come - Explore with me by Audrey Lisette Hess-Eberle The love of Wind * and Height and Wings Intoxicating Opinions Politically Red by Lani Silver Pros &

WWith 1.4 billionfollowers, Islam is thesecond largest religionin the world. Muslims

occupy 20 per cent of the world's landmass and produce 40 per cent of theworld's energy resources; the UnitedStates alone imports 25 per cent of itsoil needs from the Middle East. Giventhis reality, is it appropriate to makeIslam and Muslims the new "enemy"?

With the demise of Communism, some elements in the U.S. have foundIslam a handy tool to turn into anenemy. How real is this "Green Peril"and whether fighting it will best serveAmerica's interests or bring globalpeace?

While every country strives to protectits interests, some by making peace, others by waging war, each carries itsown consequences. With so much

interdependence in the world, belligerence is not always the bestpolicy. America's Iraq adventure isgradually driving home the point thatthe war was launched on a falsepretext--no weapons of massdestruction have been found--and thatyoung American men and women areagain dying in a distant land not touphold the values of freedom anddemocracy but to serve the interests ofa tiny elite in America.

Yet this reality has not beencomprehended fully by mostAmericans. Nearly 70 per cent believethat the ousted Iraqi dictator SaddamHussein was involved in the September11 attacks; another 30 per cent believethat he had used chemical weaponsagainst US troops. This reflects thedegree of manipulation of publicperception; the mainstream media inthe US has not served Americans well.

Only a properly informed public canmake the right choices.

Let us identify those manipulatingAmerica's policy. They are referred to asneo-conservatives, or "neo-cons", andare deeply involved in oil and armsindustries. They work for their owninterests and those of their associates. This small un-elected group aroundPresident Bush has successfullycircumvented the will of the Americanpeople.

They advocate such dangerous notionsas "pre-emptive strikes" and "perpetualwars." The irony is that they have neverserved in the military; some like Mr.Bush, even avoided the draft, but theyare quite prepared to sacrifice the livesof American boys and girls for theirpersonal interests. If "pre-emptive"strikes become the norm ininternational affairs, others, too, would

be tempted to resort to them withfrightening consequences for globalpeace.

Instead of making Islam and Muslimsthe new enemy, America needs someintrospection and reflection. SuccessiveUS Administrations have not practicedwhat they preach despite repeating themantras of democracy, justice andfreedom.

How would Americans feel if 660 oftheir fellow citizens were held at aremote island in animal-like cageswithout charge or trial? This is what ishappening to 660 individuals capturedin Afghanistan and incarcerated inGuantanamo Bay since January 2002.Sami Muhidin, a journalist working forthe Arab Television Station, Al-Jazeera,is among them.

The US has refused to categorize themas prisoners of war or allow themconsular visits. If they are guilty of anycrime, they must be charged and givenan opportunity to defend themselves ina court of law. Doesn't the BushAdministration have faith in its ownjudicial system; after all, it was theCourts that gave him victory in the2000 presidential elections?

The plight of the Guantanamoprisoners is not an isolated case.Successive US Administrations havegiven carte blanche to Israel toterrorize the Palestinians bydemolishing their homes, and firingmissiles from helicopter gun ships orfighter planes, all supplied by the US.

In August 1998, the US fired scores ofmissiles at a Pharmaceutical factory in

Khartoum, Sudan, for allegedlyproducing chemical weapons. Whilethe allegation was false, the destructionof the factory that used to produce 50per cent of Sudan's anti-malaria andanti-tuberculosis tablets has resulted inthe deaths of several hundred thousandinnocent civilians since, according to aUN study.

Instead of retaliating against the US, theSudanese Government took its case tothe UN. America, too, should considerusing multilateral institutions ratherthan resorting to unilateral action forconflict resolution.

AAs Spring time arrives andthe boys of summer returnto their "day jobs" itfascinates me to look down

at the rosters and explore the newnames. The game has always beenknown for its colorful nicknames andstrange pronunciations. This year, onething has truly struck me. America'spastime has become globalized!

Many sports offer a variety of differentnationalities in their game. Soccer for

one has been a remarkable success withthe World Cup and is known as themost popular game in the world.Soccer registration numbers worldwidesupport the fact. Professional hockeyteam rosters are looking more andmore European than ever. Manycountries now compete at a high levelworldwide. Basketball has followed avery similar path. The expansionworldwide has improved the game andhas added a European flair. Also, it has

opened thegame to theb i g g e s tmarket in thew o r l d .China. Withone player!Yao Ming.

I want tofocus on theA m e r i c a npastime. Andthe reasonswhy theA m e r i c a npastime mustgo global.

Baseballis beingp l a y e de v e r y w h e r e .Many countries aredeveloping athletes of a veryhigh level and teams have spentenormous amounts of money to findand develop these athletes. The cost, however, is not a factor compared tothe possible reward. Teams cannotafford to miss untapped talent markets- for fear of losing potential talent.

The influx of Japanese baseball playersmeans new revenue for the sport. Notonly does it bring larger audiences tothe gates but potential radio revenues, television revenues and internet hits toyour website. The Japanese treat theirbaseball athletes as gods and theysupport them as such.

It's so HARD to be an activist

Iwrote a letter recently to theSouthern Poverty Law Center inMontgomery, Alabama. It waslike a Valentine. Don't you

sometimes just get overwhelmed byfeelings of love for organizations thatdo good work? Write them!

Dear Southern Poverty Law Center:

Every time I get down in the dumps -from the stress and exhaustion of my 35years as a political activist I think of theSouthern Poverty Law Center.Sometimes it all seems just so HARDto be an activist. There's so muchsuffering in the world and I can onlywork on one little piece of life, at atime. The racism and genocide in theworld today make me ill. There's not

much money in our causes. It'sfrustrating. The current administrationof the United States upsets me.Everything I've worked for, as anactivist, is being dismantled. So after ahard fight or an all nighter I think: arethe staffers of the Southern PovertyLaw Center complaining? I bet not.Are they letting the stress of things getto them? Clearly not, they keep goingand going.

Thank you so much for your activismand intelligence. My admiration forMorris Dees and all who work at theCenter - is beyond words for. Whatextraordinary people you must be.

I think of you and I go back to mywork refreshed and calm for: your

wisdom and determination give mehope and quiet me down - as you gostep by step, with a steady and kindrhythm.

Thank you so much for 3 decades ofbrilliant work.

I've been unusually upset since our lastnational 'election.' I've fought andfought for all these years believing we'dwin. And now, as we stand on the ruinof Iraq, I see that for the first time I amnot as optimistic as I used to be. But inall honesty, I pretend that things aren'tas bad as they are. But I take my leadfrom the brave people who work for:the Southern Poverty Law Center. Ifyou can keep going, day after day, thenI will too."

Our senior prom is coming. All my friends have lined up dates. When I told them I didn't want togo alone, they were like: "oh come on, we'll all be hanging as a group." They don't get it. I'd ratherrent a movie. It just wouldn't be any fun.

A: Hi, Elyssa

From my experience - people usually do hang out as a group at high school dances. Yeah, it's not the same thingas being with a particular person and having your 'dance card' nicely established. Think of this: it could be funnot being tied to someone the whole evening. Hey, you can mingle and talk to that hot guy who came to thedance alone … and you'll be so busy wondering how he escaped your eyes over the years, you'll forget about yourgal pals and their dates. There's nothing wrong with staying home - if that's what you truly want. You Are What

AAnd I'll bet the sweeps, on that!

As food manufacturing became industrialized, changes were made to traditional foods that renderedthem less nutritious. The art of fermenting fruit and vegetables {a universal practice used in manycultures} is a prime example. Korean - Kimchi; German - Sauerkraut;American - Cucumber and Cornrelish; Japan - Miso and Umbeoshi plums.

Preservation of food was the initial reason for this practice. An added benefit was the traditional powerhouse thefood became when subjected to this art. Healthy intestinal bacteria - necessary for proper digestion andresponsible for protecting the body from human viruses. Fermented foods also provide the body with importantenzymes and vitamins and possess antibiotic and anti-carcinogenic activity. When fermenting becameindustrialized - pasteurization and the addition of vinegar created products that were more uniform and saleableyet devoid of proper nutrition.Traditionally fermented foods could be found in health food stores and preparedeasily at home. Abandoning traditional techniques of fermenting foods has greatly compromised our digestivehealth - the truth of modern "foods". In doing so, we've made ourselves vulnerable to many diseases; to whichno cure is found in modern medicine. However: the cure may be found returning to a traditional diet based onindividual culture and location.

Be wise! Remember - Conscious eating creates a body that works for life!

FFor millions, the phenomenalbest seller is the introductionto the arcane and mysterious'shadow history' of the early

church. Herewith, an attempt toseparate truth from fiction.

DID LEONARDO INCLUDEMARY MAGDALENE IN HIS"LAST SUPPER"?

Most art scholars say no. The figurereputed to be Mary Magdalene isactually the beloved disciple John, whois usually depicted young and clean-shaven.

WERE JESUS AND MARYMAGDALENE MARRIED?

Although there is no way to prove ordisprove this, most experts consider ithighly unlikely. Their main argument:there is no mention of it in canonicalwritings.

WAS MARY MAGDALENE APROSTITUTE?

This misperception probably beganwith a sermon by Pope Gregory theGreat in A.D. 591 in which heconflated several figures into one. In

1969 the Vatican officially overruledGregory.

ARE OPUS DEI AND THEPRIORY OF SION REALORGANIZATIONS?

Yes, but there is no indication thateither is involved in any plot to concealor reveal secrets of the Holy Grail.

WHAT IS THE HOLY GRAIL?

The most widely accepted idea is thatit was the cup used by Christ at theLast Supper. In the 12th century a

DID MALE LEADERS COVER UPTHE TRUE ROLE OF WOMEN INTHE EARLY CHURCH?

Yes, in the sense that history is writtenby the winners, and in a patriarchalsociety, men had a big edge.

WHAT HAPPENED TO MARYMAGDALENE AFTER THERESURRECTION?

Nobody knows. In the EasternOrthodox tradition, she went toTurkey.Western legend says she went toProvence.

IS THERE A SECRET CACHE OFDOCUMENTS THAT REVEALTHE TRUE HISTORY OFCHRISTIANITY?

No one knows, but scholars are busyanalyzing ancient documents found inEgypt in the last century. These texts, known as the Gnostic Gospels, werelost for centuries, and could shed newlight on the origins of the church.

DID LEONARDO HIDE CLUESABOUT CHURCH SECRETS INHIS PAINTINGS?

Art historians doubt it.

ADDITIONALLY, Alex Kasman{College of Charleston} is not happywith the presentation of the 'goldenratio'. The author says that it is equal to1.6180. In fact, this rather famousnumber is equal to half of the sum of 1and the square root of 5.

CONCLUSION?

The Da Vinci code is not to be believedbut it is a well-written novel.
