Abstract Ján Denďúr, a Slovak born in Yugoslavia in 1898, immigrated with wife, Zuzanna Fačárova, to the USA in 1920 to escape poverty and political oppression. Ján Denďúr earned his living primarily as a typesetter and typographer and contributed to Slovak-American culture as a journalist, writer, editor, publisher, and teacher. Ján Denďúr’s activities also included participating in the establishment of the Matica slovenského školstva v Amerike (Matica Slovak Schools in America) in Chicago; and developing the National Slovak School, a workingmen’s educational organization, and the National Slovak School’s amateur theaters, both in Cicero-Berwyn, Illinois. After his long career in the USA, Ján Denďúr and his wife returned to their homeland in 1987. The Denďúrs had no children. Ján Denďúr died in 1988. The collection consists of papers relating to all aspects of Ján Denďúr’s career and interests, as well as family materials. The Ján Denďúr Papers are rich in press clipping scrapbooks and notebooks of transcripts from the press, which comprise almost two-thirds of the collection. Additionally, the collection includes correspondence; Ján Denďúr’s writings and speeches; miscellaneous printing business samples; materials of cultural, fraternal, beneficial, political, religious organizations; and press releases from information agencies. Family and personal materials include some correspondence, the Denďúrs’ membership and dues books, Ján Denďúr’s petition for naturalization, his obituary, and other miscellany. The collection also includes index card catalogues to Ján Denďúr’s collection, several photographs, phonograph records and films. There are three audiocassettes with Ján Denďúr’s oral interview recorded in 1987 by Dr. M. Mark Stolárik. The materials are almost entirely in Slovak.

Background note Ján Denďúr was born in Petrovec, Báčka, Yugoslavia, (then the territory of Austro-Hungary), on January 30, 1898, to Katherine and Ján Denďúr. Ján Denďúr’s mother died, and his father re-married. Ján was the oldest of nine sons, and the only sister, Maria, was the eldest of the ten children. Ján grew up in a poor peasant family.

Ján Denďúr attended a grade school for six years and an evening trade apprentice school for three years, both in Petrovec. One of his teachers was Ján Cajak, who also was a famous Slovak writer. Cajak taught Ján Denďúr how to get knowledge from books. Ján Denďúr corresponded with Cajak over many years. Despite limited schooling, Ján Denďúr was very capable and learned on his own. By his teens, Ján Denďúr knew Slovak literature and history very well. He was fluent in Czech, Croat, and Serb, and knew some Russian and Hungarian, as well. Ján Denďúr’s first job was as a helper in a store. In 1914, he was called to the Austro-Hungarian army, where he was a correspondent, and during WWI served in the 19th infantry regiment at the Russian front, and in artillery at the Italian front. In 1916, Ján Denďúr was wounded in Subotica, and sent to the hospital in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia. There Ján Denďúr met a doctor who realized Ján Denďúr was well educated and helped him to stay at the hospital to do paperwork until the war’s end. After the war Ján Denďúr returned to the retail trade. In 1919, Ján Denďúr traveled from Petrovec to Turčiansky Svatý Martin, Slovakia, to see the Matica Slovenská. The Matica was the foremost Slovak institute of literature, arts, history, language, and science, and had been founded in 1861. “Matica Slovenská” means “a Slovak mother,” the word “Matica” being an endearing and dignified, although somewhat impersonal, term for mother. Until the mid-1870s, this institution represented the high point of the Slovak cultural achievement. In 1878, the Magyarization began. Slovak schools and institutions were ordered to be closed, the charter of the "Matica" was annulled, and its library and rich historical and artistic collections, as well as its funds, were confiscated. In 1918, the Czechoslovak Republic was established, and in January 1919, the “Matica” was resurrected by liberated Slovaks. Ján Denďúr met with Jozef Gašpar, a Slovak writer, journalist, and diplomat, who helped Ján visit the Matica’s library and museums. Ján Denďúr’s visit to the Matica had later an important impact on his career.

On February 16, 1920, Ján Denďúr married Zuzanna Fačárova (born on July 4, 1902, in Pivnice, Báčka, Yugoslavia). In December 1920, Ján Denďúr and his wife immigrated to the United States. Like many Slovaks, the reason for their emigration was not only poverty and possible impressments to the army of the new Yugoslavia Kingdom, but also political oppression by the Czechoslovak Republic’s leaders who did not treat Slovaks as the Czechs’ equal partners.

The Denďúrs settled in Akron, Ohio. Initially Ján worked as a manual laborer. In 1923, they moved to Chicago, Illinois, where they lived until 1940. Ján Denďúr learned typesetting and developed his talents for writing, editing, and leadership. Soon he became very active in fraternal life among Slovak immigrants, promoting Slovak culture. Ján Denďúr was executive secretary, director and instructor of the Slovak Worker’s Dramatic Union. He also was director and instructor at the amateur theaters of the National Slovak School, and the Slovak Moravian Club. Ján Denďúr was the executive secretary of the Slovak Worker’s Society as well. In 1924-1928, as a teacher of the Slovak Worker’s School, Ján Denďúr established the National Slovak School in Cicero-Berwyn,

Illinois. While in Chicago, Ján Denďúr also was director and proofreader at the Central Slovak Book Store. Ján Denďúr was a writer as well. In 1927-1930 he wrote plays dedicated to Slovak youth, such as Bez matky a otca (Without mama and dad), and Pre sestričku (About a sister), and Keď dvanásta hodina uderý (When it is twelve o’clock). His plays were performed by amateur theaters of the Slovak Workers Dramatic Union and the Slovak Moravian Club. His book Vobjatý spoločnej kliatby [(The obligation of the union oath (?)] criticized grumpy, envious and cowardly people. Ján Denďúr was also the author of the first Slovak book in America on Lenin (1924). In addition, he participated in the compilation of the book Kresťanstvo a komunizmus, which means “Peasants and communists.”

Ján Denďúr’s writings and numerous articles were published in many newspapers, particularly in Noviny Malích, Senici, Yugoslavia; Dolnozemski Slováki, Novi Sad, Yugoslavia; Národna Jednota and Frcka, Petrovec, Yugoslavia; Národni Noviny and Národny Hlásnik, Turčiansky Svatý Martin, Slovakia; Slovensky Tyjdennik, Budapest, Hungary; Rovnosť Ľudu, Naša Mldež, Naš Svet, and Slovenka, Chicago, Illinois; Slovenski Hlásnik and Národne Noviny, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Slovenská Obrana, Scranton, Pennsylvania; Jednota and Slovák v Amerike, Middletown, Pennsylvania; and Kanadski Slovák, Toronto,

Canada. Denďúr frequently used pseudonyms, such as: “Malý žlaik,” “Petrovkus,” “Ivan Vesnický,” “Ivan,” “Ivan Váh,” “Rozmarín,” “Rozmarín Vesnický,” “Redaktor,” and “Redakcia Slobody.”

On October 20, 1930, in Chicago, Ján Denďúr established his own Slovak weekly newspaper, Naš Svet, which was a chronicle of Slovaks’ cultural and political life in America and Slovakia. Ján Denďúr was publisher, typesetter, typographer, writer, and editor, and Ján Denďúr’s wife was administrative manager of this newspaper. Ján Denďúr ran Naš Svet for ten years, until May 1940. At that time, Ján Denďúr and his wife began publication of a new monthly periodical called Slovenka, which lasted only from May to December because of the lack of subscribers.

In the early 1930s, Ján Denďúr initiated the establishment of the Matica Slovak Schools in America. Ján Denďúr was co-founder, secretary, and president of the Board of “Matica” in Chicago. He actively participated in organizing the Matica Slovenská delegations’ visits to America in 1935-1937. While working with the “Matica,” Ján Denďúr filmed a movie called Život Slovákov (Slovaks’ life), which told about Slovak political leaders.

In 1941, Ján Denďúr and his wife moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From 1941 to 1943, Ján Denďúr worked also as a typesetter in the printing house of the Slovenský Hlásnik in Pittsburgh, and was its assistant editor. This was the official publication of the Slovak Evangelical Union. Ján Denďúr left the Slovenský Hlásnik because it became more Czech-influenced. Ján Denďúr continued to be active in the Slovak community. Ján Denďúr worked in the National Slovak Society as organizer of cultural activities, and also instructor and director of the Fifth District of the National Slovak Society’s amateur theater. In addition, while in Pittsburgh, Ján Denďúr edited or otherwise helped with various Slovak publications, including Wiskonsinský Slovák, Detroitsky Slovák, Katolicke

Noviny, and Rozsievač. As a speaker-lecturer, Ján Denďúr participated in various Slovak gatherings, which were organized to strengthen the relationship between Slovaks in America and Slovakia.

In May 1943, the Denďúrs moved to New York. Ján first worked as editor of the Slovencky Noviny, later re-named Sloboda, but left this publication in December 1943, because of financial and ideological disagreement with its managers. Subsequently, for about 20 years, Ján Denďúr was a typesetter for the New York Herald Tribune and the New York Post. It is unknown if Ján Denďúr became an American citizen, although he made his first petition for naturalization in 1928. It is also unknown why Ján Denďúr was examined first on May 20, 1948, when he took the oath as well. On March 29, 1949, he was examined again and questioned regarding his membership in various organizations, especially the Slovak Worker’s Socialist Federation and Worker’s Party of America, which he gave up some time before 1928. It is known that at least until September 28, 1950, the organizations in which Ján Denďúr had been a member remained under investigation, and Ján Denďúr did not receive his Certificate of Naturalization.

Ján Denďúr was a member of the International Typographical Union; the Chicago Typographical Unions # 16 and # 9 (1920s); the Bohemian Typographical Union # 330 (1920s-1930s); the Pittsburgh Typographical Union #7 (1940s); and the New York Typographical Union # 6 (1940s-1960s). He was an active member of the Slovak Worker’s Society and its Dramatic Union (1920s-1930s); the National Slovak Society (1930s-1960s); the Moravian Slovak Club; the Entertaining Society Buchlov (1930s); the Živena Beneficial Society (1940s); and the New York Slovak-American Club. Ján Denďúr and his wife Zuzanna were also long time members of the Matica Slovak Schools in America, the Matica Slovenská in Martin, Slovakia, and the Foreign Matica Slovenská. Ján Denďúr visited Slovakia from July to September 1966, after forty-six years of living in the United States. Ján Denďúr retired in 1968. After retirement Ján Denďúr continued his activities with several organizations and assembling scrapbooks and notebooks. Ján and Zuzanna had no family in the U.S. They had two children, but both of them died soon after birth. In October 1987, Ján Denďúr and his wife returned to the land of their birth because they have no relatives in the United States who could take care of them. In Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, they lived with Ján’s two brothers. However, Ján Denďúr did not live long amongst them. The last time Ján Denďúr appeared in public was October 24, 1987, in Petrovec, at the symposium that was organized by the Society of Vojvodin Slovakisist, on the 125th anniversary of the birth of Gustáv Marshall Petrovský, a recognized Slovak-American writer and journalist. Ján Denďúr died on February 2, 1988, in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia. He was buried in Petrovec.

Scope & content The Ján Denďúr Papers reflect his work as a writer, journalist, publisher, and editor. The collection spans the years from 1890 to 1987, with the bulk of the materials concentrated in the period from 1920 to 1987. The earliest document of the collection is a page of handwritten minutes from the first convention of the National Slovak Society in 1890. Ján Denďúr was later a member and an organizer of cultural activities in this Society. Most impressive is Ján Denďúr’s collection of over 170 large and well organized press clipping scrapbooks that include files on individuals, publications, and organizations, and encompass many topics pertaining to Slovaks and Slovak-Americans. The near ninety notebooks with typewritten selections from the press also illustrate Ján Denďúr’s breadth of knowledge and interests. The notebooks include statements from speeches by prominent officials, notes from articles pertaining to various subjects, and chronological indexes. Ján Denďúr’s catalogues, which were made as indexes, connect the different parts of the collection with cross-references by name and subject. The collection also contains Ján Denďúr’s correspondence, plays, speeches, and articles for publications, his and his wife’s membership and dues books from various organizations, Ján Denďúr’s recorded interview in 1987, and papers pertaining to his petition for naturalization. There are also constitutions and bylaws, some minutes and a few reports, programs and flyers of cultural, religious, political, fraternal and beneficial organizations, and some materials of typographical unions in which Ján Denďúr was a member. There are reference materials from World War II information agencies as well. The papers have been arranged into eight series as follows: Correspondence, Writings, and Ephemera; Slovak-American Press Clippings and Notebooks; Slovak-American Organizations; Press Release of Information Agencies; Family and Personal; Photographs; Index Card Catalogues; and Audio and Visual. Many names and topics of the collection are present in many sections. Within the collection, materials are organized either chronologically (to reflect the development of a specific subject over time), or alphabetically by person's name, organization’s name, or press title. The correspondence documents Ján Denďúr’s association with prominent Slovak and Slovak-American individuals with whom he was engaged in business, fraternal and social activities. There are about sixty individual correspondence files. Included is correspondence between Ján Denďúr and colleagues in the publishing business, government officials, leaders of fraternal organizations, and the public. The principal correspondents are: Milan Hodźa, the Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia in 1935-1938; Eduard Beneš, the second president of Czechoslovak Republic; Vladimír Hurban, the Czechoslovak ambassador in Washington, D.C.; Matúš Černák, the president of the Slovak National Council Abroad; Frano Tiso, the president of the Slovak Social Committee in Germany and a publisher of the Slobodné Slovensko; Jozef Paučo, the owner and publisher of the Slovák v Amerike; Ján Sciranka, the editor of the Katolicky Sokol; Konštántin Čulen, the writer and editor of the Kanadský Slovák; and Jan Cajak, Ján Denďúr’s school teacher.

Papers in the Writings subseries reflect Ján Denďúr’s prolific output as an author and speaker, and span his entire career from 1927 to 1979. Included are Ján Denďúr’s four

plays, from 1927 to 1930, and the bulk of his articles in the press, from 1941 to 1974. The main topic of Ján Denďúr’s articles is his view of the Slovak nation’s history and future. There is a typewritten copy of Ján Denďúr’s speech as a secretary of the National Slovak Society convention in 1936. Notebooks of Ján Denďúr’s memoirs and newspaper clipping scrapbooks of his articles are included in this subseries.

Some professional materials, such as samples of miscellaneous programs and flyers, typesetting advertisements, stationary samples, post cards, a few advertising contract books, and receipt books of the Slovenský Denník, Naš Svet, and Slovenka, provide interesting details of Ján Denďúr’s involvement in the printing business.

Series II: Slovak-American Press Clippings and Notebooks forms the largest segment in Ján Denďúr’s Papers, covering the period from 1912 to 1987. Materials in this series reflect Ján Denďúr’s interests in almost every aspect of Slovak history. Most of the wide array of material was created as a source of information on Slovak and Slovak-American history, and also presumably was used as a reference to assist Ján Denďúr in preparing various articles for publication.

Ján Denďúr collected materials pertaining to many Slovak and Slovak-American poets, writers, teachers, doctors, artists, singers, dramatists, priests, academics, and publishers. The papers include their biographies, writings, and speeches published in newspapers. There are records of over 170 individuals in Ján Denďúr’s collection. The material covers the period from 1930 to 1987.

Papers in Series IV, entitled Press Release of Information Agencies, are composed mostly of press releases during World War II and foregoing years, collected by Ján Denďúr, presumably, as reference materials on Czechoslovakia. There are a few materials in English published by the Czechoslovak Press Bureau in 1942-1946.

The collection includes a small amount of Ján Denďúr’s family and personal materials that relate primarily to Ján Denďúr and his wife Zuzanna. There are newspaper clippings that contain Ján Denďúr’s biographical information, materials regarding his birth anniversaries, and an obituary. The numerous membership and dues books from many organizations in which Ján and Zuzanna were members are also included. Included also are Ján Denďúr’s personal routine correspondence, naturalization documents, business cards, and other materials.

The collection contains twenty-one black and white photographs. Included are a few photographs of Czechoslovak Republic politicians, a Moravian-Slovak wedding, a scene from one of Ján Denďúr’s plays, the Živena’s golden jubilee participants, and participants in the Slovak World Congress. The collection includes three audiocassettes of an interview recorded in 1987. Ján Denďúr told about his years in Yugoslavia and explained the reason for his decision to immigrate to the USA. The collection houses two phonograph records of Slovak folk songs. In addition, the collection includes seven films of amateur movies showing unidentified people. The movie materials, presumably Ján Denďúr’s movie, include cardboard cards mostly with movie captions, some scenery, and portraits.

Since the collection mostly consists of press clippings and transcripts, it is as informative as the press itself. Ján Denďúr’s press material collection is uniquely organized with indexes making an archive of useful sources pertaining to Slovak and Slovak-American history. Ján Denďúr left his collection as a legacy rich in Slovak history, as he stated in a recorded interview.

Series description Series 1. Correspondence, Writings, and Ephemera, 1918-1986, n.d. (Boxes 1-9)

a. Correspondence, 1921-1986, n.d. This series contains files of incoming and outgoing correspondence written almost entirely in Slovak. Some correspondence is supplemented with newspaper clippings of biographical articles or obituary notes pertaining to the correspondent, or their published articles discussed in the correspondence. Several pages from Ján Denďúr’s scrapbooks that contain related information to the correspondent are also attached to the letters. Ján Denďúr received letters from Ján Cajak, in Petrovec, Yugoslavia, Denďúr’s school teacher; Štefan Osuský, ambassador in Paris, France; Frano Tiso,

the president of the Slovak Social Committee in Mnichov, Germany; and Frantiśek Vnuk, a Slovak publicist who immigrated to Australia in 1950. The correspondents are Slovaks and Slovak-Americans with whom Ján Denďúr was involved in the printing business or through social and fraternal activities. For example, there are letters to Vladimír Hurban, the Czechoslovak ambassador in Washington, D.C., documenting Ján Denďúr’s reaction to the oppression of Slovakia in 1938-1939. There are correspondence and miscellaneous materials pertaining to Milan Hodźa, the prime minister of Czechoslovakia in 1935-1938, including Ján Denďúr’s obituary speech after Milan Hodźa’s death in Chicago in 1944. Also there are materials that pertain to Eduard Beneš, the second president of the Czechoslovak Republic, in particular his speech on the Czechoslovak Day in New York, in 1939. Other notable correspondents are Matúš Černák, the president of the Slovak National Council Abroad, and Frano Tiso, the president of the Slovak Social Committee in Germany and a publisher of the Slobodné Slovensko. Ján Denďúr’s correspondence to Andrej Bagar, an actor and artist in Bratislava, and Igor Bazovský, an engineer, are organized in notebooks. Several letters in these notebooks are very long and divided into sections with titles. They seem like articles, possibly, for publication in Slovak newspapers in Bratislava. Materials are sorted alphabetically in the Slovak alphabet in sixty individual correspondence files and several miscellaneous files.

A portion of correspondence was labeled “Organizations” and reflects Ján Denďúr’s business relationship with many leaders of different organizations. There are letters from Jozef Hušek and Ján Lach (the Slovak League of America); Rudolf Kalenčik (the Slovak World Congress); V. S. Plátek (the National Slovak Society); and many others. The Correspondence subseries also includes letters between Ján Denďúr and Slovak-American editors, writers, and journalists, including Jozef Paučo, the owner and publisher of the Slovák v Amerike; Ján Sciranka, the editor of the Katolicky Sokol; Konštántin Čulen, the writer and editor of the Kanadský Slovák; and many others. Most of this correspondence is from the late 1920s to 1986, and some of these materials include information regarding the publications’ history. This subseries also includes a “Publications” category, which is correspondence between Ján Denďúr and numerous editors, publishers, journalists, and writers of Slovak and Slovak-American newspapers. This correspondence is arranged alphabetically by publication title, and includes thirty-nine titles of newspapers. These materials contain information regarding the publications’ histories as well.

b. Writings, 1927-1979, n.d. This subseries provides an interesting view into the various types of Ján Denďúr’s writings. There are his plays, such as Z noci v deň (From night to day) Keď dvanásta hodina ubleri (When it is twelve o’clock), Bez matky a otca (Without mama and dad), and Jarné búrky (The spring thunderstorm). Included are Ján Denďúr’s articles for the press from 1941 to 1974. There is a notebook entitled “Matica Slovenská v Juhoslávii, pohľad na jej vznik, činnost’ a zánik” (Matica Slovenská in Yugoslavia, a view of its establishment, value, and destruction). Ján Denďúr describes the

importance of the establishment of this cultural institute in Petrovec, Yugoslavia, in 1932, its activities, and then, in 1949, its closing because of changes in the political regime.

There are also scrapbooks with Ján Denďúr’s articles and biographical material about Rev. There are clippings about the Slovak League of America, the Canadian Slovak League, the Canadian Slovak Benefit Society, the Matica Slovenská in Yugoslavia, the Foreign Matica Slovenská, the National Slovak Society, the First Catholic Slovak Union, the Slovak World Congress, the National Federation of Slovak Evangelists, the Slovak American Congress, the Slovak American Alliance, the Foreign Slovak National Council, the Slovak National School, the Slovak Gymnastic Union Sokol, the Slovak Catholic Sokol, the Slovak Folk Artistic Collective, the Štefánik’s Dramatic Circle, and others. Please, refer also to series IIIa, IIIb, V, and VII for information about these and other organizations. c. Publications, 1903-1984, n.d. The clippings from over fofty Slovak-American newspapers are useful sources of information, and also reflect Ján Denďúr’s professional work with publishers. The list chiefly includes: Bratstvo (Brotherhood) of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; Hlas (Voice), weekly, of Cleveland, Ohio; Slovenský Denník (Slovak Journal), a daily, of Pittsburgh; Slovák v Amerike (Slovak in America), of New York; and Národne Noviny (National News), a weekly, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This subseries also includes papers related to those publications with which Ján Denďúr was actively involved, for example, Naš Svet, Slovenka, Slovenský Hlásnik, in which Ján Denďúr worked as editor; and Kanadský Slovák, Národnea Jednota, Národne Noviny, Slovák v Amerike, and Slovenská Obrana, in which Ján Denďúr published his articles. Included is a 35th jubilee issue of the Slovenský Tyždenník, which was devoted to its editor, Milan Hodža. Please, see also series Ia and VII for more information about publications.

d. Scrapbooks, 1912-1986, n.d. Ján Denďúr had done a tremendous job collecting newspaper clippings and making scrapbooks. Ninety of the more than 170 scrapbooks were numbered and arranged chronologically, from 1938 to 1980. The scrapbooks’ pages were numbered in some of them, starting from page 1 for every year. However, in a few books, some pages are missing. Some of the missing pages are found in other parts of the collection, such as the Correspondence series Ia, and also in series IIa, Individuals; IIb, Organizations; and IIc, Publications. The materials in these scrapbooks illuminate historical facts of those years. Many scrapbooks cover specific subjects, such as Slovaks in Yugoslavia and abroad; Slovaks and Czechs; Jewry in Slovakia; Czechoslovakia’s occupation by the Soviet Union in 1968; Slovak Republic; Slovak National Council; the one hundred years of Slovaks’ existence; and the March 14th, 1939 Declaration of Slovak Independence. There are also scrapbooks that focus on topics such as cultural and political organizations, cultural events, Slovak national consciousness, and the natural characteristics of Slovaks. Of note are thirteen scrapbooks of Slovak fables and verses, arranged alphabetically by title.

Of note is a scrapbook entitled “Slovensko osudové dni 1938-1939” (Slovak destiny days), which is dedicated to the years when international events forced the Slovaks to decide whether to be a part of the German Reich or an independent country. Others concern the issues of the “loss by Czechs of Carpatho-Russia” (in 1945 when the Czechoslovak Republic’s territory known as Ruthenia or Carpatho-Russia became part of Soviet Ukraine). Other topics of these scrapbooks concern American Slovaks’ participation in World War II, the Soviet Union and the future of Slovakia, anti-Semitism, the importance of the Slovak League of America, and many more.

e. Notebooks, 1918-1984 Ján Denďúr produced (or collected) the typewritten transcripts of press selections and organized them in notebooks. The near ninety such notebooks cover the period from 1918 to 1984. As well as the scrapbooks, they illustrate Ján Denďúr’s affiliation with numerous publication sources that are rich in information about Slovak people and history. The notebooks were given titles based on the subject or covered date range, and were arranged either alphabetically or chronologically.

Several alphabetically arranged notebooks contain files of prominent Slovaks and Slovak-Americans and include brief biographical notes and details about their contributions in many fields. Worthy of mention are several notebooks entitled “Zo života a cinnosti slovenskych činitelov” (About Slovaks’ life and achievements) that contain nine alphabetical files of prominent Slovaks and Slovak-Americans. The notebooks “Menoslov činiteľov v slovenskom živote” (Index of Slovaks’ life and achievements) are organized by individual’s name and contain concise notes such as date of birth and brief description of activities, or a reference to the articles in which the information could be found. The notebooks labeled “Oni asi jeho, on asi on sam” (They about him, he about himself) are extensive with vivid details of prominent people’s life, activities, and achievements. For example, there are notes from articles and several clippings from newspapers about Ján Cajak’s and Gustáv Marsal-Petrovsky’s contributions to literature and culture, about the political activities of Eduard Beneš, Ján Masaryk, Vladimír Hurban, Ján Papánek, and others. Other notebooks are arranged chronologically and illuminate important historical events. Examples are the notebooks from 1968 and 1969. In 1968, under the leadership of a young Slovak, Alexander Dubček, Slovaks and Czechs hoped to achieve “socialism with a human face,” but the liberation was crushed by the Soviet invasion. From 1969 Slovakia was a part of a federation composed of the Slovak Socialist Republic and the Czech Socialist Republic. There are two notebooks about the formation of the Czechoslovak Republic and Czecho-Slovak Federation. Another notebook includes material about the Slovak World Congress. Thirty-eight notebooks entitled “Prehľad a výber zo Slovenskej tlače” (Summary and Selections from the Slovak Press.) They include concise notes from press articles organized chronologically from 1938 to 1981 and by source and include information regarding historical facts during each year. This subseries also includes notebooks with statements from speeches, arranged alphabetically by authors’ names; articles about Slovaks in Hungary and Yugoslavia

that are arranged by place name; notes from books and other sources by title; notes from verses and fables, and other literary works, by authors’ names; and many others. Of note is a press directory notebook arranged by press title.

Ján Denďúr created notebooks that have cross-references to his collection. One notebook is a calendar, which lists important birthdays and events for each day of the year. Other notebooks are subject indexes arranged chronologically and alphabetically. These indexes list articles and their location in Ján Denďúr’s collection, using his own abbreviations. These abbreviations are described in another notebook. With these indexes and Ján Denďúr’s card catalogues, a researcher can find the location of all articles collected on a certain person, subject, or event.

This subseries includes materials of the following organizations: the Slovak National Council in America, the Czechoslovak National Council in America, the Slovak Worker’s Socialist Federation, the Slovak Calvinistic Presbyterian Union, the Slovak Evangelic Union, and others. The records are correspondence, constitutions and bylaws. Ján Denďúr was editor of the Slovenský Noviny of the Slovak News Publishers, Inc, in 1943, in New York. The records of the Slovak News Publishers, Inc. include the certificate of incorporation and several other certificates, minutes, correspondence, financial reports and other miscellaneous financial documents. There is a bill of sale the machinery, equipment, and supplies owned by the Slovak News Publishers Inc. from Ján Denďúr to Alexis Gierowski, in 1945. There are also

constitutions and bylaws of the New York Typographical Union # 6, and the International Typographical Union (there is also a list of its members in 1954), in which Ján Denďúr was a member.

Series 4. Press Release of Information Agencies, 1931-1981 (Boxes 100-104) Most of the releases are from the World War II era and antecedent years. Ján Denďúr used these materials presumable as a bank of information regarding Czechoslovak historical events. Included are materials from the Czechoslovak Press Bureau, from 1942 to 1946 in English, and from 1941 to 1944 in Slovak and Czech; the U.S. Office of War Information Foreign Language Division, from 1942 to 1944; the Foreign Language Information Service, from 1931 to 1943; the Central European Press Agency, from 1939 to 1941; the Overseas News Agency, from 1942 to 1944; and the Prazka Tiskova Sluźba (Prague Print Service), from 1939 to 1940. Among these materials is the address by Alan Cranston, the chief of the Foreign Language Division of the Office of War Information, before the editors and publishers in New York at the National Slovak Day, in August 1942. Included is a curious document from the Office of War Information entitled “Hitler’s Lies,” a short list of the documented conspicuous lies of Adolph Hitler, from 1933 to 1943; and “The Enemy’s Calendar of Aggression, 1933-1943” also from the Office of War Information. The series also contains material from the Informačne Správy (Slovak Information Service), Slovakia, 1978-1981, which published cultural, historical, and political information.

Series 5. Family and Personal, 1904-1987, n.d. (Boxes 104-105, FF #1)

This series includes membership and dues books, and a few certificates from cultural, fraternal, and beneficial organizations in which Ján and his wife were members. There are also some biographical materials, business cards, Slovak songs, a pocket diary, and a program for Ján Denďúr’s play Jánosikov Poklad (Janosik’s Treasure). Included also are miscellaneous tickets, dictionaries, a Czech stamp book, and Slovak, Czech, and German banknotes. There are two of Ján Denďúr’s and Zuzanna’s bank saving books, their inoculation papers, and a description of Ján Denďúr’s cardiogram taken in 1986. There are oversize posters with portraits of Andrey G. Grutka, Martin Raźus, and Milan R. Štefánik, and a picture by an unknown artist entitled “Above the Tatra it lightens.”

There are Ján Denďúr’s naturalization documents, which include 1948-1950 correspondence with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) in New York, pertaining to his petition for naturalization, and work sheets from lessons for the exam. Ján Denďúr sent his first application for naturalization in 1928. There are no materials in the collection pertaining to the matter from 1928 to 1948. Ján Denďúr was examined on May 20, 1948, signed Petition No. 567918, and took the oath. On June 10, 1948, Ján Denďúr sent a letter to the U.S. District Federal Court in which he enclosed a few documents that referred to his statements made May 20. He wrote: “I sincerely hope that enclosed documents will give your Honor a clear

picture regarding my public and political activities and my attitude toward the Constitution and Government of the United States.” There are also brief translations of his articles that affirm his loyalty. On March 29, 1949, Ján Denďúr was examined again and questioned regarding his membership in various organizations, especially the Slovak Worker’s Socialist Federation and the Worker’s Party of America, which he gave up some time before 1928. Seven months after his last examination, Ján Denďúr wrote to the INS “…because to this date [November 1, 1949] I did not receive … the Certificate of Naturalization, therefore I’m taking this opportunity to beg you to look in this matter.” The final INS letter from September 28, 1950, indicates that the nature of the organizations (presumable, the Slovak Worker’s Socialist Federation and the Worker’s Party of America )in which Ján Denďúr had been a member were still under investigation, and Ján Denďúr was informed: “as soon as the investigation is concluded, prompt action will be taken with a view to calendaring your petition for final hearing.” There is an obituary for Ján Denďúr published in 1987 in Hlas Ľudu, and a translation of an obituary, which appeared in the newspaper Jednota.

Series 6. Photographs, 1936-1971, n.d. (Box 105, FF #3) The twenty-one photographs, some of which are undated, include a photo of Alexander Dubček, a head of Communist party of Czechoslovakia in 1968; Ludvik Svoboda, first president of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic; Helenka Eliáš, musician; and Rudolf Kalencik, publisher. There are a few group photographs, for example, the participants in the theatrical play of a Moravian-Slovak wedding in 1931, and a scene from, presumably, Ján Denďúr’s play in performance by the Moravian Slovak Club in Chicago, in 1932. There is a group of participants in the golden jubilee convention of the Živena Benefit Society in 1941, and the Slovak World Congress participants in 1971. There are six photographs, which Ján Denďúr used for his film Život Slovákov (Slovak’s Life). Several photographs are unidentified.

Series 7. Index Card Catalogues, (Boxes 106-112) There are alphabetical and chronological catalogues. The alphabetical index of individuals is the largest of the catalogues. The index of Slovak publications is arranged by title. The catalogue of Slovak books is organized by title and includes authors’ names. There is a catalogue of Slovak fables and verses that were published in the Slovak-American press. This catalogue is organized alphabetically by title. Notable is a catalogue of pseudonyms used by some authors. The catalogue of organizations, unions, and societies includes information about the organizations’ establishment, activities, and references to the sources that could contain additional information. The chronological catalogue is a calendar of certain events. There is a small catalogue on bits of scrap paper, which duplicates catalogues of publications, organizations, and pseudonyms, and in addition to these includes an index of schools.

Most of the catalogues have references to many sources, in particular, to Ján Denďúr’s archives of scrapbooks and notebooks, which comprise this collection, and to other newspapers, books, and encyclopedias. For example, the code “zz/c” is

an abbreviation for the notebook title “Zo ivota a cinnosti slovenskych initelov,”

and the code “P-V” refers to the notebooks entitled “Prehad a Vyber zo

Slovenskej Tlae.” Other code examples are B-SKS – Bulletin Svetovho Kongresu

Slovakov, ES - Encyklopedia Slovensk, H – Horizont. There is an important abbreviation key index for the catalogues in box 94, folder 3.

Series 8. Audio and Visual, 1987, n.d. (Boxes 113-116, FF #1)

Audio materials include three cassettes and two phonograph records. The cassettes contain Ján Denďúr’s interview recorded by M. Mark Stolárik, president of the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies, in 1987, the last year Ján Denďúr lived in America before his return to Yugoslavia. The interview is in Slovak. During the interview Ján Denďúr told about his years in Yugoslavia, his poor parents and big family; schools and teachers, which he remembered with appreciation; and his years in the army before and during World War I. Ján Denďúr cried almost all the time during the interview. Especially his reminiscences about the war made him cry.

Ján Denďúr explained very briefly the reason for his decision to immigrate to the USA, which was mainly a desire to escape from the iniquities of that time, and the imminence of the impressments to the army. He detested the war and the army. At first, Ján Denďúr moved to Port Rica, Italy, where he worked for some time. Later, Ján obtained a passport at the Serbian Consulate and moved to Brazil. At the Czechoslovak Consulate in Rio de Janeiro, Ján got a visa to the United States. It is unclear from the interview how his wife arrived to the United States. Ján Denďúr described his years in America, and his career as journalist, editor, and typographer, mostly in the Naš Svet and Slovenský Noviny. Ján Denďúr expressed his opinion and concern regarding the political leaders in Czechoslovakia history. Jan Denďúr mentioned his archives and catalogues as a source for learning Slovak and Slovak-American history, which he had decided to give to the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies.

On the phonograph records are Slovak songs and classical music of the 14th through 17th centuries. Visual materials include seven amateur 16 mm camera films of unknown attribution. There is a movie about an unidentified group of two women and one man with a small child. Another film starts with a pile of U.S. currency on top of a certificate, which says “Slovak Liga v Amerike - Na pamiatku – Miroslav Minar – Oslobodenie Slovenská” (“Slovak League in America – In Memory – Miroslav Minar – The Slovak Liberation”) and later one sees a hand moving money around. Others are about a group of people at a waterfall, and a large group of people posing in front of a house. Another film is about an auto-racing car with “NCH Death Dodgers” written on the side. The cardboard cards from Ján Denďúr’s movie materials show the movie captions, scenery, portraits, and organizations’ logos.

Separation report A large collection of Slovak-American books, newspapers, almanacs, and other publications were accessioned with the Ján Denďúr Papers. Included were Naś Svet, Wiskoninsky Slovák, Slovenská Žena, and others. In 1989, these publications were separated from the papers and added to the former Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies Library’s newspaper collection, since the Ján Denďúr Papers were initially accessioned to that institution. These newspapers are now at the HSP Library.

In addition, the following newspapers have been removed later to the HSP Library:

Horizont October 1973, no.10; September/October 1982, nos. 9/10

Narodna Jednota December 17, 1930; January 3, 1931; February 24, 1940

However, it is not clear why some materials were kept in the miscellaneous files, such as some individuals’ correspondence (Series Ia), and also individuals’ files in scrapbooks (Series IIa, and IId), and notebooks (Series IIe), while some were separated and sorted by a person’s name. The processor selected materials pertaining to the same person from the individuals’ miscellaneous files and merged them with those that were separated. Because of overlap of individuals’ names, publications’ titles, and organizations’ names within the collection, the researchers are encouraged to search among several categories for comprehensive coverage of given citations. For example, individuals’ files are in the "Correspondence” series Ia, while the same and some additional individuals’ files are in the "Individuals" series IIa, in press clippings. Additionally, individuals may be found under the “Miscellaneous individuals files” categories in series IId; in scrapbooks, IIe; in notebooks, IIf; and in catalogues in series VII. The same could be said about publications and organizations files. Publications’ files are in the Correspondence series Ia, and additional publications’ files are in the Publications series IIb. The publications also may be found under “Miscellaneous Publications” categories, and in series VIII in catalogues. Organizations’ files are in the Organizations series IIb in press clippings, while many of the same organizations’ files and many others are in series IIIa, IIIb, V, and VII. The Slovak titles of plays, the titles of some newspapers, the labels of scrapbooks and notebooks, and some organizations’ names in

this finding aid were translated into English by the processor. The translated text is given in parentheses.

Most scrapbooks and notebooks were originally housed in binders. Pages were removed and stored in several folders. The cardboard covers were photocopied if there was useful information, and a copy was included in each folder. There were duplicate copies of a few notebooks and phonograph records, and two blank films, which were removed from the collection. The movie titles were duplicated in two formats: on cardboard cards and on rolls of wallpaper. The rolls were removed from the collection because of their fragile condition and discarded.

Processing of this collection made possible by a generous grant from the Phoebe W. Haas Trust. Material from the interview was used in writing background notes of this guide.
