The province of Como runs along the whole of the western shore of Lake Como and includes the triangle territory between the two arms of the lake. Though the area is quite small and compact, in few other places you can find such a variety of environments, panoramic viewpoints and settlements. In just a few kilometers, you can easily pass from the city center to the wilderness, finding out a preciousness that we might describe as a distillation of Northern Italy. In the whole of the mountain region, and above all in the Upper Lake area, one finds entire valleys with practically no sign of the presence of man and where the natural beauty is on a level with the most famous national parks; also, the fauna both of the mountains and of the lake is prosperous and flourish. The heart of the Lower Lake is the city of Como, marked out for elegance and beauty. The sub continental climate contributes to make our area enjoyable all through the year. Welcome to Lake Como! A precious territory, which lies between history and innovation, tradition and future, sport and relaxation, breathtaking glimpses and artistic beauties. This unique atmosphere will show you a world to be fully discovered and lived.

Getting there

Lake Como is situated in the heart of the

Lombardian foot Alps, about 50 km north

Great personalities

Many personalities born in Como and in the nearby area are remembered for different reasons: Alessandro Volta (1747 – 1827) is the inventor of the battery and discoverer of methane gas. The volt, the unit used to measure electric tension, is named after him; Pliny the Elder (23 A.D. – 79 A.D.), cavalry officer, lawyer, councillor to Emperor Vespasian, admiral; Pliny The Younger (61 A.D. – 113 A.D.) was a lawyer and magistrate, as well as a writer; the bishop Paolo Giovio (1483 – 1552) and the archaeologist Benedetto Giovio (1471 – 1545); Cesare Cantù (1804 – 1895), teacher and parliamentary deputy, also founder of the Historic Archive of Lombardy; Mario Radice (1898 – 1987) and Leopoldo Metlicovitz (1868 – 1944), both painters, and Francesco Somaini (1926 – 2005), sculptor; important writers were Massimo Bontempelli (1878 – 1960), Carlo Emilo Gadda (1893 – 1973), Giuseppe Pontiggia (1934 – 2003) and Mario Biondi (1939); Simone da Orsenigo and Pellegrino Tibaldi (1527 – 1596) were two famous architects, while Tolomeo Gallio (1527 – 1607) is remembered because he commissioned two of the most beautiful villas of the lake region: the Garovo at Cernobbio - today Villa D’Este - (1569) and Palazzo Gallio in Gravedona (1583), which now houses the Comunità Montana Alto Lario Occidentale (Mountain Community of the Northwest Como Region). Pope Innocenzo XI (1611 – 1689), born Benedetto Odescalchi, became Pope in 1676, was buried in Saint Peter Cathedral and was blessed by Pope Pio XII in 1956. Other important architects born in Como to be mentioned are Antonio Sant’Elia (1888 – 1916), strong supporter of the Futurism movement, and Pietro Lingeri (1894 – 1968), his principal follower. A special section later on (see page 11) will be dedicated to Giuseppe Terragni, famous architect and main representative of the Rationalist movement.

In roman times, the importance of the

territory of Como grew, leading to the

foundation of “Novum Comum”, the

current city of Como.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF COMO Brief Summary The geological origin of Lake Como is glacial. During the Quaternary period the whole territory was occupied by a big glacier, the melting of which gave birth to our lake, also called Lario. The first urban settlements took place in prehistoric times and, from that period on, Lake Como has always had a fundamental role in the commercial trades from the North of Europe down to the Pianura Padana. In roman times, the importance of the territory of Como grew, leading to the foundation of “Novum Comum”, the current city of Como. In origin, the town was a fortified military center, placed in a strategic position thanks to the presence of the lake and of the mountains, which were both a defense against the enemies and a starting point for possible attacks and conquests. During the Dark Ages, the Barbarians occupied, conquered and devastated the territory until 774, when Carlo Magno won against the Longobards. The 12th century saw the conflict with the Ducato di Milano, in a continuous interchange of victories and defeats. After the War of the Ten Years (1118 – 1127), the city of Como passed under the control of the Milanese families Visconti and Sforza. In the following years, Como went through the French invasion and the Spanish domination, until 1714, when the territory was taken by the Austrians. Finally, in 1859, with the arrival of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the town was freed from the Austrians and became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy under the House of Savoy. The 20th is the century of the two World Wars and in particular during the end of the Second World War Como witnesses the imprisonment and killing of Benito Mussolini by the partisans in 1945.

Ferry boat and funicular

One of the best ways to obtain a memorable impression of the natural beauty of Lake Como is to use the lake boats and ferries, which allow a unique view of the lakeside villages and the villas with their gardens descending to the waterfront. Such sights were enjoyed by the selective travellers of the European Élite in the Grand Tour coming over the Alpine passes to visit the Italian heartland, and later on were experienced by aristocrats and big names of the artistic panorama from all over the world. This is the most romantic way to visit Como and its lake, with its tiny villages stacked perilously up to the rocky slopes overlooking the lake, its lakeside resorts known the world over and its splendid villas surrounded by century-old parks. Everything you would like to know about how to organize your excursion on the lake is available on the website www.navigazionelaghi.it. Greatly appreciated amongst the excursions on the way out of the city is the funicular going up to the village of Brunate. This charming little train made its first run in 1894 and still today connects the main town with extremely striking panoramic viewpoints every 30 minutes. It takes only a 7-minute journey to get to Brunate on a railway that has the maximum permitted gradient of 55%. Brunate is located at about 700 meters above sea level and has always been popular among the Como and Milanese nobility who built many Liberty style villas there; Brunate is also a great starting point for beautiful nature walks. www.funicolarecomo.it Another option to have a fantastic view, enjoy beautiful panorama and follow nice tracks and paths for tourists and trekkers , is to reach the village of Pigra with the historical cable car called “Funivia Argegno-Pigra” , starting from the lake village of Argegno http://www.comune.pigra.co.it/viverea/Mezzi_di_Trasporto/Orari_Funivia.html

Walking around, riding a bike or a horse, sailing the lake: these are just some possible alternatives to discover and enjoy the territory of the province of Como, which offers lots of things in a small space and many possible itineraries outside the usual clichés: up to the mountains or down the hills, in the wilderness or through beautiful gardens on the lake, experiencing quite tours with the ferry boat or thrilling flights with the seaplane. In the last years, the tourist offer of the province has been enhanced giving much attention to this precious environment, so that everyone, now and in the future, can live and enjoy it in the best possible way. A lot of different things in little space means many different opportunities for everyone.

Step by step For those who like to walk, the lake is a long, breathtaking path, with both easy and more demanding tracks. From the city center and the gentle hills of Brianza to the wild and uncontaminated places of the Upper Lake region, our territory offers walkers of all ages the chance to practice their favorite sport. Lovers of the mountains can also go rock-climbing or enjoy walks with breathtaking panoramas over the lake, also going towards the nearby Switzerland, with its numerous mountain dews. It is also possible to organize walking itineraries following some issue of cultural interest, such as the events of the Second World War and of the tragic termination of Benito Mussolini.

Riding around Bicycle riders are just in the right place: our territory is rich in tracks for those who like to live this place respecting the environment while enjoying the amazing panoramas. On the website www.cicloviadeilaghi.it, you will find specific and well-planned itineraries, which envision both the demands for an easy and relaxing excursion for beginners and more intensive and longer travel plans for those who are keen on this sport and want to emulate the great professional champions. Not to be forgotten is the renowned Salita del Ghisallo, famous stage of Giro d’Italia and fascinating challenge for all cyclers. At the end of the rise, there is both the Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary, procuress of riders, and the Museum of Cycling (www.museodelghisallo.it), to recollect the history of this amazing sport.

Flying over the Lake The lake’s vast panoramas can be admired from above, choosing a somehow unconventional way to enjoy the gorgeous views and the breathtaking glimpses: the seaplane is the perfect means of transportation for those who want to live an intense emotion in total security. Como has the only school in Europe issuing licenses for seaplane pilots: the Aero Club Como has recently been awarded by the Guinness World RecordsTM as “the oldest seaplane operation and seaplane flight school”. Como, in fact, is a water aviation sanctuary, where one of the earliest seaplane gatherings and contests took place in 1913. From 1930 on, this professional school has also organized tourist flights in order to let everyone make exciting experiences in one of the nicest sceneries of the planet, experiencing those curious and interesting aircrafts that are also boats and enable the passengers to land anywhere on the lake and to discover beautiful, hidden corners. The fleet of 11 aircrafts are all available for hire to any suitable qualified pilot. “Officially Amazing!”: that’s how the Guinness World Records has described this excellence of our territory. www.aeroclubcomo.com But you can also experience another, even more thrilling but still totally secure way to enjoy the landscape: paragliding is the perfect diversion for the bravest ones for appreciating Lake Como and its panoramas, because of the favorable drafts of the area. There are many qualified schools that offer the possibility both to learn how to fly and become a pilot and to experience a flight with a trained assistant in a two-seater-paragliding. On the website www.lakecomo.com you will find a specific section dedicated to air sports.

Como, the New Golf Destination The beautiful area of Lake Como is enriched by 7 prestigious golf courses and is the ideal place for keen golfers. That is the reason why Como has been chosen as the location for the 2014 International Golf Travel Market www.igtm.co.uk , the premier event for the golf travel industry, which took place in the charming exhibition center of Villa Erba, in Cernobbio. Lake Como is a sought-after destination for those who love this sport because the wonderful “greens” are inserted in an area rich in history, art, culture, natural beauties, strategically set in the heart of Lombardy. “Lake Como – A World Within A World” … the New Golf Destination.

ARTISTIC AND HISTORIC HERITAGE

The Villas

6

The Villas are surely the most amazing and fascinating sight of Lake Como: we are talking about sumptuous residences that spangle the waterfront hillsides, with their lush gardens endowed with scattered monuments of great beauty. These botanical paradises grow because of the lake’s geographical location, which ensures an eco-climate of its own, with a mild winter that permits a vegetation unusual for such a latitude: here grow rare species of tropical plants alongside laurels and olives and beautiful flowers. Almost all the villas have been built from 1500 to 1800 to be summer houses, and were used by the Lombard nobility for refined meetings and politic and social events, showcases of their richness and treasures. Lake Como slowly became “the Italian Versailles”, with guests like Leonardo da Vinci, Ludovico il Moro, the Cardinal Borromeo, Napoleone Bonaparte, the Austrian Emperor Francesco Giuseppe I, the Kaiser Guglielmo II, Giuseppe Parini, Alessandro Manzoni, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Stendhal, Gustave Flaubert, and Franz Liszt, just to mention some of the most famous ones. Today these extraordinary villas welcome modern movie and fashion stars, proof of the endless charm of the Lake Como scene. These beautiful villas have established a close relationship with the environment, a perfect integration with the surrounding landscape. Some of these villas are also the perfect locations for ceremonies, events, conferences, all of them driving force of business tourism. Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo has been built for the Clerici family towards the end of 1600. Inside there is a significant museum that collects statues, paintings and original neoclassical furniture, amongst valuable sculptures by Antonio Canova and paintings by Francesco Hayez. In the garden, it is possible to admire trees and plants coming from every part of the globe and in springtime the park becomes amazing because of the incredible azalea flowering, with more than 150 varieties. Villa Melzi and Villa Serbelloni, both located in Bellagio, offer spectacular gardens and views of extraordinary beauty, overlooking the two arms of the lake. On the Lenno headland, there is the breathtaking Villa Balbianello, built in 1700 and today property of the FAI, the Italian National Trust. This is one of the most stunning corners of the lake: the wonderful panoramic lodge overlooks Bellagio and the Comacina Island. Villa Balbianello has also been used as location for famous movies such as “Star Wars” and “Casino Royale”. Also to be mentioned is the beautiful Villa Olmo, prestigious headquarter of artistic exhibitions in Como town.

The Romanesque Style The most featuring architectural style of the area of Lake Como is the Romanesque, movement which developed during the 10st century in different parts of Europe but which evolved in our area with specific traits, in particular thanks to the Maestri Comacini’s school. The Romanesque style is characterized by simple and pure decorations, and stone is the main architectural element. The gem of Como’s Romanesque style is Sant’Abbondio Church, a masterpiece built in 1013 with an elegant façade emphasized by pillars, which divide the inside into 5 naves. The ancient church of San Carpoforo is one of the first examples of Romanesque architecture and has an unusual structure with a raised presbytery and a crypt. Another example is the Basilica of San Fedele, once dedicated to Saint Eufemia, built in the 10th century on a former Christian church. Other buildings of this architectural style are Porta Torre, at the edge of the old city, the baptistery of Lenno and the church of San Benedetto in Perlana Valley. In the area of the Intelvi Valley, a distinct and specific school of art developed, guided by the so-called Maestri Intelvesi, stucco and marble workers, painters, and skilful master builders. Among them, one of the most important figures was Benedetto Antelami (1150 – 1230), architect and sculptor, and also designer of the plan of the baptistery of Parma.

The Rationalism The Rationalism is an artistic movement, which develops during the years of the fascism and finds its strongest expressions in architecture. The province of Como gave birth to two of the main architects of this tendency, Giuseppe Terragni and Cesare Cattaneo. Giuseppe Terragni (Meda 1904 – Como 1943) was born in Meda in 1904 and is universally considered one of the most distinguished representatives of modern architecture and of the Rationalist movement. In 1926 he signed the first Italian Rationalist document creating the foundation of modern architecture. The so-called “Group 7” was born, a group that gathered the main architects of this movement; Terragni was the principal exponent. His architecture career began with the restructuring of Como’s Metropole Hotel and the construction of “Novocomum”. Between 1932 and 1936, he built “La Casa del Fascio”, a milestone in European Rationalism. Giuseppe Terragni died in Como in 1943. Cesare Cattaneo (Como 1912 – 1943) is the other eminent figure of the Rationalism. He fabricated the playgroup of Asnago and the fountain, which is now in Piazza Camerlata. Together with other artists, he built the location of the Industry Fascist Union in Como. His most famous work is the “Casa d’Affitto” in Cernobbio, emblem of the Rationalist style.

The City of Silk The most well established industrial sector of the province of Como is the silk industry. The golden thread story begins a long time ago: an exclusive secret of the Chinese Imperial Court for centuries, the silk manufacture industry was imported to Italy after the year of one thousand, and spread to the South of Italy, especially Sicily. Silk production began in the Como area around 1400, mainly thanks to Duke Ludovico Sforza who imposed mulberry tree cultivation to the farmers. This initiative gave him the title of Ludovico il Moro, which comes from the name of the mulberry plant, which in Latin is “bombix mori” and in Como’s dialect “murun”. The silk industrial sector developed gradually and constantly, until becoming one of the reasons why the city of Como is famous worldwide: it is in fact considered the world’s silk capital. The social and economic importance that silk has had in the Como area can be better understood by visiting some interesting museums, which tell the story of this precious product and its various phases of production. The Silk Educational Museum of Como (www.museosetacomo.com) is a tangible representation of the continuity between past and present of an industry that maintains a supremacy over the whole world. In this museum, there is a complete collection of original machineries, which were used by the various silk manufacturers until just a few years ago. Here it is possible to retrace the journey of the silk thread from the egg by which the worm is born to the thread spinning, from the fabric creation to the printing, arriving ultimately at the finished product.

A precious textile

collection

The Texile Studio Museum – Antonio Ratti foundation – (www.fondazioneratti.org) is a particular and unique multimedia museum containing a precious textile collection of over 400.000 pieces from medieval fabrics, to velvets and silk brocades, all of which are catalogued and viewed on computerized screens. This museum is the result of a transformation process of the private antique fabrics collection, gathered over a period of forty years, by Antonio Ratti, founder of the Ratti Silk Firm. The MuST follows the double objective of preserving immense historical possessions and making them public thanks to research,

exposure and study activities.

Archeological sites On the hills around the city of Como there are Etruscan evidences, marks of the commercial exchanges and of the strategic position of our territory. The precious objects are now preserved in the Archaeological Museum Paolo Giovio and the zone of the findings is part of the protected area called “Parco della Spina Verde”. The Via Regia is a long route, running along the entire western shore of Lake Como. The extremely ancient pathways of pre-historic origin, signposted halfway along the coast, were unified and rebuilt by the Romans who gave this new route the name, Via Regia, which means “mainroad”, afterwards changed to Via Regina, after the passage of the Longobard Queen Teodolinda. For centuries, the Via Regia has been the connecting route between North and South of the Alps, between Como and Milan and the transalpine regions; a travel and business route but also an intense place of cultural exchange. Today, the majority of the ancient road is still walkable on foot and maintains some of its past characteristics: walkers most appreciate the pathway on the Northern path of the lake, especially between Nobiallo and S. Maria Rezzonico.

THE GASTRONOMIC PLEASURES

Three worlds of flavors In all the territory of Lake Como you can enjoy unique products, looked after by small producers who are the pride of the local food and wine, with their specialties made in full respect of traditions with high quality ingredients. Discerning diners and lovers of good food will find three quite separate traditional cuisines, each one with a distinct accent that belies their geographical vicinity. The lake cuisine is based on fish and it preserves the simplicity of popular gastronomy. Specialties of this branch of kitchen are the “missoltini” and the “pesce persico”, but also olive oil, vegetables and typical desserts. The traditional valley cuisine, secret and archaic, is based on polenta, typical dish of the rural tradition, which can be combined with fowl, mushrooms and different kinds of cheese. The cuisine of the Brianza plains, characterized by its lusty meat dishes, is strong and savory, featured by the famous “cazzoéla”, meat and sausage with vegetables. Also salami and honey are typical of the Brianza gastronomy. The desserts are a prominent part of our cuisine. The “masigott” comes from the city of Erba. The “braschin” is a sweet flat bread, typical of Garzeno. Finally the “resta”, typical of Como town, is a loaf decorated with the classic olive branch. Tradition and innovation, strong tastes and refined delicacies: everything you need to “taste” this rich territory.

TOURISM IN COMO

Between tradition and innovation Tourism in the province of Como has very ancient origins, but especially from 1500 onwards the lake becomes the venue for what can be considered perhaps the most beautiful and amazing Italian holiday settlement. In fact, in those years, and until 1800, starts the construction of magnificent holiday villas, commissioned by the noble Lombard families, who wanted to sojourn on the lake for long periods from March to September. Also the “green Brianza” becomes a renowned vacation destination, thanks to its mild climate and the charm of the hillsides, at a short distance from the city center. From the 1850s, the first hotels are built, mainly for UK customers who choose the lake as the privileged destination for their holidays. The touristic demand and supply become progressively more intense, enhancing the development of the tertiary sector in its various aspects. In Como, tourism is one of the main economic activities, alongside with the silk industry and furniture. In recent years, the tourist sector has grown constantly, both in the turnover and in the number of employees, also thanks to the development of the accommodation system. Besides the traditional leisure tourism, new infrastructures, both public and private, have boosted conference and business tourism. Other sectors are still developing and seem to have an extremely promising future, such as mountain tourism, historical and artistic tourism, activities based on sports and on sightseeing, without neglecting aspects related to eco sustainability and respect for the environment. Also school trips have been enriched with new itineraries, conceived for the heterogeneous needs of the students.

Numbers

Over the past five years, the province of Como has gradually consolidated the tourist market, which in 2016 has recorded more than a million arrivals and almost three millions visitors. In 2017, domestic tourism accounted for around the 26% of the total market arrivals and approximately for the 24 % of stays. Foreign tourism proves to be a strong point in our province, with the Germans remaining the most numerous visitors of Lake Como; English, USA, Swiss and Liechtenstein and French tourists follow.

A Successful Conference One of the area of Lake Como’s primary assets is its exceptional range of resources for conferences and business gatherings. A great variety of venues are available, many providing recreational facilities for conference-goers to enjoy during their free time. Furthermore, all this lies at a stone’s-throw from Milan’s Northern airport Malpensa and from Switzerland. The solutions that the province of Como offers to the operators are the most varied: from the castle in the countryside, to the hotel in the city center, to the prestigious villa on the lakeshore. And for the entertainment after a demanding conference meeting, unusual and unique attractions: the famous hydrofoils, the historic boats of Renzo and Lucia, a visit to the Alessandro Volta Museum, a trip to the sanctuary of the Madonna del Ghisallo, the patron saint of cyclists, and to the adjacent museum, in which historical bikes are preserved. It is also possible, and highly recommended, to visit the gardens of the historic mansions and their museums. Shopping in Como, especially for silk, satisfies the most diverse tastes and the Casino of Campione d’Italia is something different you may want to experience. Many opportunities that operators can use to promote a positive touch to their business meeting.

The locations

The International Exhibition and Convention Center of Villa Erba in Cernobbio includes a large villa on the lake and a huge park with elegant glazed pavilions (11.000 sm.) hidden among the trees. Like Movie Stars “A movie is a journey that leads into a world of places, events, emotions, …” and to help the fans of the big screen to find the landscapes of their favorite motion picture, the Province of Como and the Chamber of Commerce of Como have produced a guidebook in two editions entitled “The Stars of Lake Como”. All the movies contained in the two booklets have been fully or partially shot in our territory, even if they represent just a small part of the great quantity of images of our lake used for advertisements and TV settings: Lake Como, with its beauty and charm, has proven to be an ideal location for these kinds of representations. This is the so-called “Cinetourism”, born from the desire to find places where famous movies have been shot, retracing the paths of great directors and recollecting the most exciting intrigues. Cinetourism constitutes and important means of promotion and development for our territory and moves more than 100 million travellers every year. And we are sure that the fascination that the lake has been able to exert on directors, actors and screenwriters, will seduce also those who reach our territory in search of film locations.
