JET ENGINES
HISTORY•Aeolipile invented by Heron of Alexandria (first reaction engine)
•Jet Propulsion took off with the invention of the rocket by the Chinese in the 13th Century
•Heinkel He 178 – first practical jet to fly on 27.08.1939
JET ENGINES
HOW IT WORKS•Newton’s Third Law: For every action (i.e. exhaust gases) there is an equal and opposite reaction (i.e. Thrust).1. Front Fan sucks cold air into the engine2. Secondary fan compresses the air,
increasing pressure 8x3. Liquid fuel is mixed with air and ignited.
(1650 F)4. Exhaust exit through turbine blades, which
turns the compressor and fan.5. Gases exit through exhaust nozzle. (1300
mph)
JET ENGINES
APPLICATIONS•Commercial Jets powered by high-bypass ratio turbofan engines.•Combat Aircraft powered by low-bypass ratio turbofans•Gas turbine engines in helicopters, powerplants, M1-Abram Tank
JET ENGINES
APPLICATIONS
•Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, derivative of the X-35 from the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Program
