The Rabbi and his wife were assigned to their first Congregation to reopen a shul in Brooklyn. They arrived in February, excited about their opportunities. When they saw the Shul it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time for the Purim Service. They worked hard , repairing, plastering, painting, etc. They were ahead of schedule when a severe snowstorm hit the area. After the storm the Rabbi went to the Shul and his heart sank when he saw all the damage the storm had done to the building. A large area of plaster had fallen off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit. The Rabbi cleaned up the mess on the floor and headed home. On the way home he passed a flea market and stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful handmade crocheted tablecloth with a Mogen David embroidered in the center of the tablecloth. It was just the right size to cover the hole in the wall where the plaster had fallen off. He purchased the tablecloth. (Article continued on page 8)

6and Franklin Roosevelt, Marian Anderson sang at an open-air concert on Sunday, April 9, 1939 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, a concert that was attended by over 75,000 people. Marian Anderson was an ambassador fighting bigotry for much of her life, and that voice brings out that message powerfully when she sings:

When Israel was in Egypt’s land, let my people go

Oppressed so hard they could not stand, let my people go

Go down Moses, way down in Egypt’s land

Tell old pharaoh, let my people go.

Later versions of this spiritual make a change from “old pharaoh” to “ALL PHARAOHS.” It’s a point that has its merits.

For those of you with internet service, you can hear Marian Anderson sing “Go Down Moses” early in her career. Put “Marian Anderson GO DOWN MOSES 1924” into your browser. You’ll hear “Victrolaman” play her 1924 RCA VICTOR 78 rpm acoustical recording that is definitely worth hearing.

Let me wish each of you a zissen (sweet) Pesach.

CANTOR’S CORNER Michael Kravitz

I look forward to Passover every year. Weather-wise, it’s usually nice here in the Washington area. We usually get together with a nice mix of people for seder, and almost always there are people at our table who aren’t Jewish and who are coming to a seder for the first time. Given that haggadah means “telling,” they are fascinated by the stories and songs, not to mention the food. The pillows on the chairs are a hit, too.

One of my favorite stories that is Passover-related involves King Arthur, standing outside the Round Table, beaming with pride as he looks at his knights –clean-shaven, armor gleaming, horses immaculately groomed – until he sees one at the end of the line with a gristly beard, rusted armor and a horse that had obviously not been groomed. King Arthur walks over and says

MAH NISHTANAH HA-LAYLA HA-ZEH MI-KOL HA-LAY-LOT

(Why is this night different from all other nights?)

Passover holds a lot of memories. Memories of the first sedarim at my bohbe and zayde’s home where my zayde led the seder and my father and his youngest brother Abner, both with nice singing voices, led the singing. I still use some of the melodies I learned there 60+ years ago. But one of the songs that comes to mind at this time of the year is not part of the seder, but it does tell the story leading up to the exodus from Egypt. It is a spiritual called “Go Down Moses,” and I first heard it on an old RCA VICTOR 78 where it was sung by the incredible voice of contralto Marian Anderson. For any of you native Washingtonians, that name should be very familiar. In 1939 the Daughters of the American Revolution would not allow her to sing to an integrated audience at Constitution Hall. With the help of Eleanor

IN MY OPINIONBernice Cohen

On the front page of the Washington Post, Sunday, March 13, there is an article titled, “A Mission for Jesus in the Public Schools.” The article is about how a group shows teachers how to share their faith without breaking the law. Such a move is appalling to me.

My first reaction was, “WHAT?” In this country? In this day and age? The article points out that it is not about proselytizing; only about how to show their faith to the students. For example, if a student questions the meaning of life, the teacher should say it is about her faith in Jesus. Some suggestions are to play Christian music in the classroom before class and during lunchtime and after school. The group sponsors free week-long seminars where teachers are taught that they have a right to pray with colleagues during breaks or at lunchtime They may lead before and after school religious clubs for students. The teachers are told it is okay to keep a bible on their desk and teach about it in class, as long as it fits within the curriculum. And they are urged to witness for Jesus by acting in a godly manner. One teacher is quoted as saying he was inspired by the training he attended to send out prayers and inspirational verses to colleagues. Other teachers not only keep bibles on their desk, but hang crosses in their classrooms.

The Christian Educators Association is teaching teachers to bend, but not break the limitations of the First Amendment. WHAT?

I clearly remember that when I was in elementary school in Arlington, Virginia, I had to sit out in the hall once a week when my class was taught about the bible. I was considered “not one of them.” My parents could do nothing about this humiliating experience.

But today, we do not have these teachings in public school. If you want your child to be more learned in your faith, you send that child to a church or synagogue school. One of the basic tenets of our wonderful Country is religious freedom. This does not mean the freedom to

force your religious belief on others. I believe it means that you should be free to follow and practice your religious beliefs as long as they do not infringe on the religious beliefs of others. Clearly, bringing Jesus into the public school classroom defies the meaning and intent of our First Amendment.

I think that it is incumbent on all of us to try and stop this movement before it is too late. I am very concerned about one of the current presidential hopefuls saying that you must believe in Jesus in order to be saved. I am more concerned about my grandchildren being force-fed about a religion - any religion - in public school.

Not in this country. Not here. Not now. Not ever!

Fun and Fancy to Present“A Walk on Jewish

Broadway”

by Fred Shapiro

When you listen to the most popular music of our times from Broadway, Hollywood and the big band era, do you frequently hear the echoes of the tunes your Cantor and fathers sang in the synagogue? It comes as no surprise that 67% of all Tony Awards for musicals were given to Jewish composers and lyricists. Just one more feather in our yarmulkes! Can you deny the success of the melodies of Irving Berlin and Marvin Hamlisch, both using the classic Cantorial melodies that was part of their upbringing?

On May 13, 14 and 15, under the direction of Rodney Brooks, Fun and Fancy will bring us a concert that you will never forget. There will be 24 voices and a five-piece band on stage to bring you the music that you know and love.

For 20 years during the 80’s and 90’s, Rodney was involved with Jewish music in the Greater Washington Area. In the early 90’s he started his own Klezmer band called Shir Delite, a band that has performed at the Kennedy Center and at three national folk festivals. Key musicians from Shir Delite will be the nucleus of the stage band.

Come with Fun and Fancy’s Rodney Brooks for A WALK ON JEWISH BROADWAY at Clubhouse II in May. Check the LW News for information about when tickets will be on sale in the Clubhouse lobbies.

When: Monday, April 11, 1:30 pmWhere: Clubhouse II Auditorium Cost: $6.00 /person The story takes place in Ukraine (Poltava) in 1941 before and during the German invasion. This story is about deep friendship between three musically talented children: two are Jewish, both virtuosic, and a talented German girl who share a love of music. Their friendship extends beyond the gaps of different religions and nationalities. When the Nazis invade, the children’s Jewish and German families must save each other from the forces of both fascism and Communism.

Wunderkinder, a powerful drama retaining throughout the point of view of its three child protagonists, is able to offer warmth, heart and humor in offering an answer as to why our world is so often blighted by war, horror and hate. Why? Well, as one of the children so succinctly puts it: “Because adults are just stupid.”

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Four Jewish ladies meet after 30 years at their High School Reunion. One goes to take food while the other 3 start to talk about how successful their sons became. No. 1 says her son studied economics, became a banker and is so rich, he gave his best friend a Ferrari. No. 2 said her son became a pilot, started his own airline, became so rich, he gave his best friend a jet. No. 3 said her son became an engineer, and started his own development company, became so rich, he built his best friend a castle. No 4. came back with a plate full of food and asked what the buzz is about. They told her they were talking about how successful their sons became and asked her about her son.

She said her son is gay and he works in a Gay Bar. The other three said she must be very disappointed with her son for not becoming successful. “Oh no!!” said the lady, “He is doing very well.” “Last week on his birthday he got a Ferrari, a jet and a castle from three of his boyfriends.” The other three fainted. . . .

(This joke won an award for the Best Joke in a competition held in Britain.)

WOMEN’S SHABBAT SERVICESATURDAY MAY 21, 2016

On behalf of our committee I would like to thank everyone who volunteered to participate in our Women’s Shabbat Service. Our JRLW women stepped up and we were able to fill our Women’s Shabbat Service with all those that volunteered!

As part of our program, we are asking our JRLW members to assist our organization in the purchase of new Prayer Books. By utilizing the form on page 5 of this publication, you can help in the purchase of new Prayer Books for JRLW. All you have to do is list the women in your life that you admire and love. The cost for this is only a $5.00 donation per woman’s name. The deadline for having names in the book is April 20, 2016. Please fill out the form and send it with your check made payable to JRLW to the address listed on the form. Sincerely, Joan Engleman

HADASSAHBarbara Eisen

Hadassah will hold a Women’s Seder on Sunday, April 3, at 3:00 pm in the Activities Room in Clubhouse II. Rabbi Tirza Schmelzer-Covel will lead the celebration. During this special Seder we will recognize the role of women in the Passover story and in contemporary Jewish life. We will also focus on newer rituals like Miriam’s Cup and the orange on the Seder plates that will be on each table. We will dine on Passover style desserts. You are welcome to bring with you any specialty Passover dessert that you make. The charge is $6 to cover expenses and will be collected at the door. However, you must RSVP to Caryl Rothberg by email ([email protected]) or phone (301-439-7338) so that we know how many are coming. If you RSVP by phone, please leave a message with your name and phone number. This will be a fun event!

The Judaic Study Group will meet on Monday, April 18, in Clubhouse I at 1:30 pm. The topic will be “The Art of Asking Questions,” by Rabbi

Jonathan Sacks. Copies were distributed at the previous meeting. We invite all who are interested in any aspect of Jewish studies and the relationship of Judaism to our daily lives to attend. For those who are interested, but are unable to meet in the afternoon, please contact Peri Schuyler (301-869-2968, [email protected]). It may be possible to add an evening session in alternate months.

A Greater Washington Lecture Series will be held on Wednesday, April 13, from 7:30pm to 9pm at Beth Sholom Congregation, 11815 Seven Locks Road, Potomac. Maxine Grossman, Associate Professor of Jewish studies at the University of Maryland, will speak on “The Role of Women in the Dead Sea Scroll Communities.” The cost is $20 for members or $25 for non-members. Send your check or credit card information to Hadassah Greater Washington, 11900 Parklawn Drive, Suite 350, Rockville, MD 20852. Call Janet Lazar (301-598-4066) if you need transportation or are able to be a driver. Call the office at 301-881-8203 for further information about the program.

THE FOUR QUESTIONS ASKED AT THE PASSOVER SEDER

1. On all other nights we eat bread or matzah, while on this night we eat only matzah.

2. On all other nights we eat all kinds of vegetables and herbs, but on this night we have to eat bitter herbs.

3. On all other nights we don’t dip our vegetables in salt water, but on this night we dip them twice.

4. On all other nights we eat while sitting upright, but on this night we eat re-clining.

As you can see, each of the “questions” refer to an aspect of the Passover seder. Leavened bread is forbidden throughout the holiday, bitter herbs are eaten to remind us of the bitterness of slavery, and vegetables are dipped in salt water to remind us of the tears of slavery.

Jewish Residents of Leisure World Silver Spring, Maryland

March 2011, Adar 1 - Adar 2, 5771 Newsletter Editor: Bernice F. Cohen 301-598-0192 Website: http://www.jrlw.org
