The Rabbi and his wife were assigned to their first Congregation to reopen a shul in Brooklyn. They arrived in February, excited about their opportunities. When they saw the Shul it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time for the Purim Service. They worked hard , repairing, plastering, painting, etc. They were ahead of schedule when a severe snowstorm hit the area. After the storm the Rabbi went to the Shul and his heart sank when he saw all the damage the storm had done to the building. A large area of plaster had fallen off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit. The Rabbi cleaned up the mess on the floor and headed home. On the way home he passed a flea market and stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful handmade crocheted tablecloth with a Mogen David embroidered in the center of the tablecloth. It was just the right size to cover the hole in the wall where the plaster had fallen off. He purchased the tablecloth. (Article continued on page 8)

JRLW MEMBERS ATTENDADVOCACY DAY

Ten members of JRLW participated in the annual Advocacy Day in Annapolis organized by the Jewish Community Councils of Baltimore and Greater Washington. They joined well over 200 Marylanders at the reception held on Tuesday, February 7.

A major speaker at the event was Ben Kramer making a stirring case for the Jewish community to support his legislation to bar the State of Maryland from investing or contracting with firms that support the BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanction) movement against Israel.

The attendees heard from Senator Roger Manno, Delegates Kramer, Cullison and Morales, discussing legislation related to health and security issues, as well as support for the Jewish agencies that provide services to our senior community.

Kramer’s BDS legislation is directed at ceasing any investments in firms that support the movement to disestablish the State of Israel, as well as prevent the State from signing contracts for work to be performed by BDS supporting firms. He argued that the current trend of anti-Semitism must be confronted. He also advised of the strong relationships between Maryland and the Sate of Israel. Kramer called on constituents to let their representatives know that the BDS legislation must be passed. He needs this popular support to counter the highly effective propaganda that the BDS movement has launched in the country.

JRLW COMMUNITY SEDERFred Firnbacher

Since many of us attend the first Seder with family or friends, JRLW gives us the opportunity to have a different experience by attending a Community Seder right here at Leisure World with your friends and neighbors. This year the Community Seder will be on Tuesday, April 11, at 6 pm in the Crystal Ballroom of Clubhouse I. The cost will be $36.00/person for adults. The cost for children under 12 years will be $18.00.

We attempt to make this Seder a fun evening as well as a spiritual one. We use a Haggadah which presents an abbreviated, yet complete service, with a lot of singing. Everyone attending will be invited to participate because we have responsive readings. And, of course, the meal will be delicious!

Make your plans early since we hope to have another sellout.

If anyone plans to bring grandchildren, we will be happy to have some youngsters to recite the four questions. You can contact me at (301) 438-3877.

Please fill out the form on page 3 in this Newsletter and return it with your check, made out to JRLW, to Milli White, 2901 S. Leisure World Blvd., #106, Silver Spring MD, 20906.

THE DEADLINE FOR THE APRIL NEWSLETTER IS MARCH 10. ARTICLES SUBMITTED AFTER THAT DATE WILL APPEAR IN THE MAY NEWSLETTER.

HADASSAHBarbara Eisen

On Wednesday, March 15, Hadassah will be presenting a program on “Jewish Genealogy.” Our speaker, Tony Hausner, spent 30 years as a social scientist working for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As a genealogist, he has served for a number of years as the shtetl leader for several town research groups, in Galicia, Poland and the Czech Republic. He has particularly focused on the town of Skala Podolskaya, where his mother was born. He has visited all of these towns and written articles about several of them. For Skala, he managed the translation and publication of the town yizkor book. He has also studied holocaust history.

We are continuing our policy of asking members to bring refreshments. Those whose last names start from H through N are requested to bring a snack (cookies, chips, pastries, etc.) that will be shared and enjoyed by all. If you will be attending, please RSVP by March 10 to Janet Lazar (301-598-4066, [email protected]). If you are bringing a snack, please let Janet know what you plan to bring when you RSVP. The meeting will be in Clubhouse I at 2:00 p.m. All Leisure World residents are welcome.

The Judaic Study Group will meet in Clubhouse I on Monday, March 20 at 1:30 p.m. The topic will be Israeli poets, particularly early poets emigrating to Israel/Palestine from Europe, poets escaping from the Holocaust, or poets either born in Israel or making aliyah. How did their origins shape these poets? Were they poets of Judaism or poets of the land or both? Please contact Peri Schuyler (301-869-2968, [email protected]) for further information.

On Tuesday, March 21, Hadassah will be sponsoring a private docent-led tour of the historic 6th and I Synagogue. The tour will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will last about an hour. The synagogue is two blocks from the Metro Red Line Gallery Place station. Parking is also available at a PMI lot on Massachusetts Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets, NW. The building is fully accessible. There will be a small fee, probably under $5, for the docent. Please RSVP by March 14 to Judy Rumerman ([email protected] or 301-680-0850).

Elaine Schenberg (301-598-0079) is sharing the Hadassah card project with Jan Bloom (301-593-7720). Elaine lives in the Fairways South. The prices of the cards are $2.50 each or 5 for $10. Hadassah greeting cards are displayed and sold at every Hadassah meeting. Please call Elaine or Jan if you want to pick up cards or to have them mailed for you for an extra postal charge.

Larelda Gruber (301-598-5922) is chair of Youth Aliyah/Children at Risk. This project helps disadvantaged children in Israel. The goal is to create a circle of $1,000, made by individual contributions of $40. Please send your donations to Larelda at 3200 N. Leisure World Blvd. #201, Silver Spring, MD 20906.

CANTOR’S CORNERMichael Kravitz

My first memories of celebrating Purim go back to 1953. My family was living in Hyde Park, Massachusetts and my father and one of his brothers were in business together running a Sunoco station on Blue Hill Avenue in the Franklin Park area of Dorchester, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. I was 5-1/2, already in Hebrew School, and my zayde, who lived with my bohbe and my Aunt Elizabeth in Dorchester, invited me to come with him to his shul on Purim morning. It was an Orthodox Congregation, officially known as Beth El Congregation and was located at 94 Fowler Street in Dorchester. Nobody called it Beth El Congregation or Beth El of Dorchester. It was simply the Fowler Street Shul, completed in 1911 and paid for by immigrant Jews contributing nickels, dimes and quarters to make it the first synagogue in Dorchester. One of those immigrant Jews was my zayde. He, his parents and his siblings fled Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, and he and a partner set up a grocery business in the Boston area. The Fowler Street Shul was where he davened every day. It was also where my father and his two brothers davened and where each celebrated his bar mitzvah. The Fowler Street Shul was also where late JRLW past-President and long-time Leisure World resident Bernie Kahn davened during his youth. When it came to davening, these people really knew their stuff. In the 1970s I was conducting services in the D.C. area for the High Holy Days. I had someone conduct the preliminary morning service prior to shacharit and not particularly well. After Yom Kippur was over, I asked my father what he thought of this man’s davening. My father said, “if he had davened like this at the Fowler Street Shul, not only would they have kicked him out, they would have called him a goy.” This was the congregation where I spent that memorable first Purim.

I have included a picture of the shul. It was different than other shuls I had attended. The sanctuary was round with the bimah facing the ark. I was by far the youngest person in attendance that morning, but I wasn’t the least bit

uncomfortable. I had my trusty grogger with me, and when the name “HAMAN” came up during the Megillah reading, I made sure that everyone heard it. It seemed like everyone there was really old, but that was probably just the perception of a 5-1/2 year old. Somebody in his/her mid-40s seems old to a child that young. My zayde, born in Latvia in 1882, was someone I always thought of as old. He would have been 70 at the time of that Purim service. A few months from now, that will be my age. How is that possible?

Prior to writing this article, I looked up the Fowler Street Shul. It is no more and hasn’t been for many years. Boston, like many U.S. cities in the early part of the 20th century (Washington, D.C. quite notably) had major population shifts as the years went by. Many of the Dorchester Jews moved to Brookline, Newton or Sharon, and the people moving into the dwellings they once inhabited were not Jews. By 1967, the Fowler Street Shul ceased to operate. The building had deteriorated over the years, would eventually be sold and razed with an apartment building being erected on the site where the shul once stood. It was sad reality of the changing times.

So, the physical building may not be there any more, but what does remain are the memories. Good memories. A place where my grandfather, father, uncles and I had a chance to express our Jewishness. And on March 11 and 12 when we celebrate Purim this year, I’ll look forward to young children, groggers in hand, drowning out the name of Haman just as I did all those years ago. A CHAG SAMEACH to each of you and your extended families.

PURIM

Allan FirestoneReligious Vice President

Purim is a holiday that commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire where a plot had been formed to destroy them. The story is recounted in the Biblical Book of Esther and is a festive holiday that is celebrated on the 14th of Adar which this year falls on March 12, 2017.

Rabbi Gary Fink will officiate at our service in Clubhouse II in the exercise room. Services will start at 9:15 am.

It is customary to attend Megillah reading in costume and all JRLW members are encouraged

to dress up as characters from the Purim story. During the reading of the Megillah it is customary to boo, hoot or shake noisemakers (groggers) to express the dislike of the villain Haman when his name is mentioned.

OH MY! A Purim SpielIn the spirit of fun on Purim, I present the following article of real/ maybe real/fake news.

On Friday, January 27, the Washington Post printed an article on the front page stating, “For the first time scientists have grown an embryo that is part-pig, part-human.” (This part is real.) Now, when the science academia publishes a new undertaking for lay persons like us, you can be sure that the theory has become fact.

This means that in the future, it will be theoretically possible to produce an actual pig-person! Oh My! This raises several questions in my view.

First, if an adult pig-person wants to marry a Jewish person, would he/she be accepted into the family? Oh My! Or would the pig-person be shunned as being traif?

How would this affect our time honored tradition of eating Chinese on Christmas day? Much Chinese food has some pork in it. Would eating this food chance eating a relative of a pig-person? Would this be a form of cannibalism? Oh my!

Suppose this pig-person grows up to be an airline pilot? This would give new meaning to that old saying, “When pigs fly!” Oh my!

When you admonish your grandchild that her room looks like a pig sty, is it now a relative compliment? Oh my!

Shall we add a fifth question at the Passover Seder: “Why is this person different from all other persons?” Oh my!

And, finally, take a good look at all of your friends. Does one of them have a snooty appearance, thinking himself better, smarter than everyone else? Better look for other pig-like features. That friend may be a pig-person! Oh my!

JRLW/COA MOVIE

Movie Matinee: “Rosenwald”

2015 ♦ 1 hour 35 minutes ♦ Documentary

When: Thursday, March 30, 1:30 - 3:30 pm

Where: Clubhouse II Auditorium ♦ Discussion to follow.

Cost: $7.00/person

Aviva Kempner’s Rosenwald is the incredible story of Julius Rosenwald, the son of an immigrant peddler. He never finished high school, yet rose to become the president of Sears. Rosenwald was inspired by Jewish ideals of tzedakah [charitable giving] and tikkum olam [acts of kindness]. Julius also had a deep concern over racial inequality in America, and used his wealth to become one of America’s most effective philanthropists. This movie sheds light on this silent partner of the Pre-Civil Rights Movement. Rosenwald gave $62 million and because of his modesty, his philanthropy and social activism are not well known. A wonderful and heartfelt story about this true Mensch.

Jewish Residents of Leisure World Silver Spring, Maryland

March 2011, Adar 1 - Adar 2, 5771 Newsletter Editor: Bernice F. Cohen 301-598-0192 Website: http://www.jrlw.org
