While working at Agence Ter in Karlsruhe, Germany, I worked on a number of different competition entries. The office was selected to redesign the entryway for the town of Iffezheim. I drew sections and perspectives for the presentation of this project. I also worked on the Tribünen + 2 competition in Vienna.Vienna. The task was to come up with an innovative way to repurpose a pair of old horse track grandstands. With the support of my coworkers, I planned and designed the office’s entry. The grandstands become new apartments with large garden terraces.

Irrigated community gardens provide fresh food
I planned a new tourism route through Crownpoint, New Mexico, a small town on the Navajo Reservation. It would help to promote the community’s unique culture and also provide a new source of income. I designed the buildings and the landscape along this route. The new road and tree lined pepedestrian paths would also reconnect the various parts of the sprawling community. I located the swale along the road to catch the stormwater and use it to irrigate community gardens in the center of the city. Although it only gets 12 inches of rain annually, seasonal flooding has become a problem. The swale wwould be a cost-effective mitigation strategy since it works with the existing topography.

Plants used to make Navajo arts & crafts Plan of the Arts & Crafts Hub Architecture of the housing & shopsThe buildings are based on traditional Navajo artwork that features repeated geometric patterns, bilateral symmetry, and a pastel color palette. The roof trusses are expressed to mimic patterns used in their famous rugs. Single family homes are typical for Navajo reservations, but these buildings have three reresidential units. This density is not only more energy efficient, but also promotes a more walkable city. All the buildings are oriented toward the south to capture solar radiation during the winter months too. Louvers and deciduous trees would shade the windows during the summer. Water is scarce so the rrainfall captured from the roofs is stored for future use. Greywater would also be reused.

I went to Botswana and researched Jwaneng Mine, the world’s most valuable diamond mine. After 2030, the mine is expected to become unprofitable. The current plan is to return the land as closely as possible to pre-mining conditions. I created an alternate redevelopment plan that gives the mine new vavalue. A new solar array built on the former tailings dams could power 50% of Botswana’s electricity needs. The rest of the mine would become an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Diamond mining has made Botswana one of the most prosperous African nations, so it is important to their country’s heritage. The mmine would also be recreational place with art installations, hiking trails, and sports fields.

Revegetating the mineAlthough the kimberlite ore and the shale rock surrounding the pipe are not toxic, the pollution from dust particles makes the mine an uncomfortable place. Revegetating the mine helps control erosion and create new habitat for animals. The best plants are native fast-growing pioneers with aggressive roots. ThThe slopes of the pit, the overburden dumps, and the tailings heaps are hydroseeded to germinate grass and shrubs. Along the edges of the landforms, acacia trees would be planted. Pedestrian paths are located under these trees to take advantage of their their ability to shade the sun and to block the dust. AAquatic plants are also introduced into the reservoir to create a new wetland habitat.
