Brajesh Maheshwari, Director, Allen Kota shares the paper analysis of JEE Main 2014. Read below the excerpts of the interview.

Careers360: What is your overall analysis of JEE Main 2014?Brajesh Maheshwari: The JEE Main 2014 paper wise analysis is as below –

Physics –

F Fundamental questions were asked.

F However, no analytical questions were present.

F Questions composition was almost uniform from Class 11th and 12th.

F Questions from Mechanics found more representation.

F Physics was rated moderate but the questions were lengthy.

Chemistry –

F Chemistry in general was considered to very easy and almost all questions were direct.

F Majority of questions were directly from the NCERT text books.

F Major questions were found to be from Physical Chemis-try, followed by Organic and then Inorganic.

F No assertion-reason type questions were found as they were in last year.

Mathematics –

F Many questions were repeated from IIT-JEE 2000-2001.

F The questions were comparatively easy from the last year’s pattern but were time consuming due to lengthy calcula-tions.

F No assertion-reason type questions.

Moreover, I would say that no new questions were provided and most of them were repeated.

Careers360: Share a brief idea about the difficulty level of the exam? Which subject was the toughest vis-à-vis easiest?Brajesh Maheshwari: Students have marked Math-ematics the toughest. Physics was moderate and Chemistry was the easiest of all.





Careers360: How many students from your centre have opted for the JEE Main 2014 offline mode? What is their feedback on the exam?Brajesh Maheshwari: Approximately 40% of our enrolled students have opted for the offline mode. The examination was moderate. They have come up with posi-tive responses.

Careers360: What is the expected JEE Main 2014 Cutoff ?Brajesh Maheshwari: Since the examination was mod-erately easier compared to JEE 2013, the cutoff mark for General category may be raised up to 135.

Careers360: How should the test takers tackle the erroneous questions if they experience it during the Online JEE Main 2014 Exam?Brajesh Maheshwari: I shall advise the JEE Main aspirants to leave the erroneous, difficult and time consum-ing questions, and concentrate only on the questions which they can calculate easily.

Careers360: Share some of the special points for JEE Main 2014.Brajesh Maheshwari: There were some questions which were either wrong or had wrong options provided in the JEE Main 2014 question paper. One question was wrong in Maths paper. One question from Physics paper was wrong and had misprint of units in two questions.

Careers360: What is your overall analysis of the paper?Shailendra Maheshwari: All in all, the paper was above average. In fact, the difficulty level was a bit higher compared to previous years. Interestingly, 20 questions (7 in Mathematics and 13 in Chemistry) in the question paper are repetitions from previous years.What is important to note is that the paper has proved that contrary to popular belief, JEE Main and JEE Advanced need different levels of preparation. JEE Advanced is basi-cally IQ based while JEE Mains is memory based.

Careers360: Which subject was the toughest in the exam? Which was comparatively easier?Shailendra Maheshwari: Most of the students, who sat for the exam, found Physics to be the toughest. Chemistry was the easier section compared to the rest of the question

paper.

Careers360: How many students from your centre have opted for the JEE Main 2014 offline mode?Shailendra Maheshwari: A total number of 20,000 students from Career Point sat for JEE Main. Majority of the students have mixed feeling regarding the exam.

Careers360: What is the expected JEE Main 2014 Cutoff ?Shailendra Maheshwari: Given the cut off marks of 113 last year for general category, the cut off this year is expected to be 7-8 marks lower than that. So, this year the expected cut off for general category students can be 105 marks.

Following is the detailed analysis of JEE Main 2014 by Career Point:Number of questions in the paper was 90 (30 Questions each in Physics, Chemistry and Maths) and Total Marks were 360 with 1/4th negative mark for each wrong answer. Overall Analysis of Question Paper-Difficulty level of the paper was slightly at higher side as compared to last year paper. There were 20 questions in paper that were also asked in previous years’ exams. 9 questions were specifically from the syllabus of JEE Main. Students, who prepared for JEE Advanced, normally don’t give much attention to this part of syllabus. Hence, this paper clearly distinguished JEE Main from JEE Advanced. In nut shell, whoever was specifically focusing on JEE Main preparation would have better prospects to score good in this paper.

Careers360: How similar or different was the JEE Main 2014 paper compared to past year?Jitin Arora: JEE Main 2014 paper was similar in pattern to JEE Main 2013, but there were no Assertion-Reasoning questions. There was a match the column question in physics in the form of an MCQ.

Careers360: Which subject was the toughest in the exam? Which was comparatively easier?Jitin Arora: Physics was similar in difficulty level as last year. Mathematics was difficult and lengthy compared to the last few years. Chemistry was the easiest of all the three subjects as has been happening each year.

In this interview, he shares his insight on the JEE (Main) 2014 paper pattern and difficulty level.

Edited excerpts: Careers360: What is your overall analysis of JEE Main 2014 the paper?Shiv Pratap Raghuwanshi: The paper was of moder-ate difficulty level. Physics Paper was above average and almost of same difficulty level as was the last year. Some of the questions of physics involved calculations, which made the paper a bit lengthy and difficult also. Most of the ques-tions were from the main branches of Physics and very few questions were out of league like semiconductor devices, communication systems, etc. JEE Main 2013 paper had enough weightage for these topics.

Chemistry paper was very easy. All three parts of the chem-istry were easy. Physical chemistry was of greater weightage

in comparison to organic and least weightage was there for Inorganic chemistry. Overall chemistry paper was easy and was time saving that could be utilized in Maths paper, which was lengthy though not very tough. Overall paper was very much similar to last year’s paper difficulty level wise.

Careers360: Can you give a brief idea about the diffi-culty level of the exam? Which subject was the toughest in the exam? Which was comparatively easier?Shiv Pratap Raghuwanshi: The paper was of moder-ate level and Physics was the toughest (though for some students, Maths appeared to be the toughest) and Chemistry was easiest of all.

Careers360: Your take on difficulty level of questions featured in JEE Main 2014 question paper and topics on which maximum numbers of questions were covered.Shiv Pratap Raghuwanshi: In Physics, tough ques-tions were from Fluid Mechanics and Properties of Matter part, which generally is neglected topic and less practice is done by the students on these topics. Next difficult topic in Physics was electrodynamics due to calculations involved in the question asked. Questions from rest of the topics were very easy in Physics.In Chemistry, none of the question was tricky or tough and there wasn’t any ambiguity in chemistry questions, which generally is not the case with Chemistry subject. So, most of the questions were straightforward and easy in Chemistry.

Careers360: How many students from your centre have opted for the JEE Main 2014 offline mode? What is their feedback on the exam?Shiv Pratap Raghuwanshi: Most the students opted for offline mode (approximately 80% of the students). Rea-son for this can be: 1. They are less familiar with the online mode. 2. They will get more time for the preparation of JEE Advanced after JEE Mains.





First reaction from student side is that the paper was very easy but most of the students did silly mistakes and even in simple questions, many of them filled incorrect options. So, actual score in general is low.

Careers360: What is the expected JEE Main 2014 Cutoff ?Shiv Pratap Raghuwanshi: The cutoff will be very much similar to JEE 2013 Main. It will be around 115 marks for general.

Careers360: Any special highlights that you want to share?Shiv Pratap Raghuwanshi: The paper was good, except Chemistry. Students should be motivated to score better in JEE Advanced. Best wishes from my side to those who will be eligible for JEE Advanced (study hard for the remaining time) and also for those who will be taking admis-sions in NITs and other state engineering colleges on the basis of JEE Main.

OVERALL MARKS DISTRIBUTIONThe paper had 90 questions each worth 4 marks. All ques-tions were objective type with single correct option. Subject wise each subject had 30 questions of 120 marks.





OVERALL DIFFICULTY LEVEL ANALYSISIn this analysis, Resonance has rated every question on a scale of 1 to 3. The ratings are done by the expert faculty of Reso-nance. The individual ratings are then averaged to calculate overall difficulty level.1: Easy 2: Moderate3: Difficult





Difficulty Level Analysis: No. of Questions

Resonance Experts feel that all subjects were of similar difficulty level, while Chemistry was on easier side compared with Physics & Mathematics While around 156 Marks can be considered easy overall, 140 marks are relatively difficulty and 64 marks are considered difficult by Resonance Team.

Overall, the experts at Resonance said that while the paper was moderately difficult, the cut-off may remain same as last year, since the number of aspirants have gone up and competition is intense as this exam is a gateway to JEE (Advanced).
