May 14, 2019 Jeanne Osborne Assistant Dean for Academic Programs College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences 100 Agricultural Administration Building 2120 Fyffe Rd. Columbus, OH 43210 Dear Ms. Osborne, In response to changes in leadership education courses offered across the university and to ensure that students have a variety of course options, the Leadership Studies Minor committee would like to propose a number of changes to the program. The minor consists of four content categories and a capstone requirement. The content categories are: Personal Leadership Foundations, Team and Organizational Leadership, Community Leadership, and Ethics and Diversity. A summary of these changes and rationale may be found below. SUMMARY OF LEADERSHIP STUDIES MINOR CHANGES Personal Leadership Foundations

    • Added to course options: o BUSHMHR 3211 Leadership and Character o COMLDR 2100.01 LOOK: Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders o COMLDR 2100.02 LOOK: Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders o ESHESA 3573 Theories of Leadership in Learning Organizations

    Team and Organizational Leadership

    • Added to course options: o ESHESA/BUSHMHR 3221 Leadership and Innovation o ESPHE 3200H Mindful Resilience: Individuals to Organizations

    • Removed from course options: o ENGR 5680 Leading in Engineering Organizations

    Community Leadership

    • Added to course options: o ENR 3500 Community, Environment and Development o ESHESA 4239 Leadership for Social Change (May also count toward

Ethics and Diversity but not twice toward the minor) • Removed from course options:

o RURLSOC 4500 Community Development in Practice o SOCIOL 2391 Social Organization of Communities

  • Ethics and Diversity • Moved to Personal Leadership Foundations

o BUSHMHR 3211 Leadership and Character o ESHESA 3573 Theories of Leadership in Learning Organizations

    Capstone

    • Clarifying language added for Individual Studies option RATIONALE FOR PROPOSED CHANGES Proposed Course Change between Categories BUSHMHR 3211 Leadership and Character and ESHESA 3573 Theories of Leadership in Learning Organizations are moved from Ethics and Diversity to Personal Leadership Foundations after consideration of course content. Both courses include substantial self-reflection as well as the study of foundational leadership theory. This content was deemed more in line with other courses already offered in the Personal Leadership Foundations category. Proposed Course Removals Team and Organizational Leadership: ENGR 5680 Leading in Engineering Organizations is no longer being offered by the Department of Engineering Education. BUSMHR 4232 Leading and Managing Change is no longer offered in Fisher College of Business. Community Leadership: RURLSOC 4500 Community Development in Practice has a prerequisite of ENR 3500 and many students pursuing the minor are unable to fulfill this in order to take it. SOCIOL 2391 Social Organization of Communities has not been offered in several semesters and the Department of Sociology does not have it scheduled for the future. Proposed Course Additions Personal Leadership Foundations: Two sequential courses are proposed for this category, COMLDR 2100.01 and COMLDR 2100.02 LOOK: Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders. These courses are offered through the LOOK to Ohio program facilitated by OSU Extension Educators. LOOK is a teen leadership program wherein high school students learn about foundational leadership theory and concepts as well as engage with business and community partners. Students earn college credit through monthly place-based education classes, a blended learning leadership course, and service-learning projects. Credit for the minor through these courses will be communicated through the LOOK program and not advertised for current OSU students. Both courses must be completed to earn credit for the Personal Leadership Foundations category. The aim for including these courses is to enroll more students into the Leadership Studies Minor upon their acceptance to OSU.

  • Team and Organizational Leadership: Two courses are proposed for this category. ESPHE 3200H Mindful Resilience: Individuals to Organizations is offered through the College of Education and Human Ecology and focuses on developing individual skills necessary to be successful in a broad range of organizational contexts as well as assessing individual and group values and their importance to social problem solving and policy making. The second course, ESHESA/BUSHMHR 3221 Leadership and Innovation, cross listed in the College of Education and Human Ecology and Fisher College of Business, offers opportunities for students to develop better problem-solving skills in a team-oriented atmosphere, develop resilience for future leadership challenges, and consider new perspectives in leadership to address challenges in organizations and society at large. Both courses offer unique perspectives on skills needed for working in teams and organizations for students. Community Leadership: Two courses are proposed for this category. ENR 3500 Community, Environment, and Development aids in developing a foundational understanding of the concept community and how to engage in practices to increase quality of life, resiliency, and sustainability. The second course, ESHESA 4239 Leadership for Social Change takes a critical approach to leadership theory and practice through applying concepts and critiques of critical social theory. This process aids in the development of a more inclusive and justice-oriented leadership practice. This course also integrates substantial diversity and inclusion content and thus may count in Diversity and Ethics. However, the course cannot count twice toward the minor requirements. This is noted on the curriculum sheet. These two courses offer important perspectives for students wishing to engage in change processes within diverse communities. Proposed Language Changes Capstone: Previously listed as just “x193 context-based leadership capstone”, this option is confusing for students. Many students have erroneously taken a 4000-level capstone course in their major assuming it would meet the requirement. Additional language now clarifies that students may design and develop a leadership-related capstone with a faculty member in their academic department through an Individual Studies course. General guidelines for faculty advisors will be provided through the Leadership Studies Minor Coordinator. Select Courses: Incorrect course titles were identified during the program review process. The titles have been updated to reflect current offerings and are noted in both the tracked changes and final curriculum sheets.

  • Our overarching goal is to ensure a well-rounded minor that offers a variety of opportunities for students to increase their knowledge of leadership concepts and develop leadership-related skills. Thank you for your consideration of the proposed changes. Respectfully, Jera Niewoehner-Green Assistant Professor of Community Leadership Program Coordinator, Leadership Studies Minor

I am happy to report that the changes to the Leadership Studies Minor have been approved by the CFAES Academic Affairs Committee and will now move on to the Council on Academic Affairs at the university level. For that I need concurrence from each college involved in the minor. An email indicating the support of the John Glenn College of Public Affairs with the changes will be sufficient to move this process forward. I have attached the letter outlining the changes as well as the current, highlighted changes, and final proposed curriculum sheets. Please let me know if you have any questions about the changes or process. In community, Jera
