    Safety Rules

IMPORTANT operating section of this manual forproper fuel and amount.Your tiller is a precision piece of powereq

not a play thing. Therefore, exeextreme caution at all times.

It is suggested that this manual be readin its entirety before attempting toassemble or operate. Keep this manualin a safe place for future reference andfor ordering replacement parts. This unit is shipped WITHOUTGASOLINE or OIL. After assembly, see

SAFE OPERATION PRACTICES FORTILLERS1 Read the Operating and ServiceOwner's Manual carefully. Bethoroughly familiar with thecontrols and the proper use of theequipment.

2 Never allow children to operate apower tiller. Only persons wellacquainted with these rules of safeoperation should be allowed to useyour tiller.

3 Keep the area of operation clear ofall persons, particularly smallchildren and pets.

15 Use caution when tilling nearbuildings and fences, rotating tinescan cause damage or injury.

16 Before attempting to remove rocks, bricks and other objects from tines, stop the engine and be sure thetines have stopped completely.Disconnect the spark plug wire andground to prevent accidentalstarting.

17 Check the tine and enginemounting bolts at frequent intervalsfor proper tightness.

    18 Keep all nuts, bolts and screwstight to be sure the equipment is insafe working condition;

19 Never store the equipment withgasoline in the tank inside of abuilding where fumes may reach anopen flame or spark. Allow theengine to cool before storing inany enclosure.

4 Do not operate equipment whenbarefoot or wearing open sandals.Always wear substantial footwear.

5 Do not wear loose fitting clothingthat could get caught on the tiller.6 Do not start the engine unless the

shift lever is in the neutral IN)position.

7 Do not stand in front of the tillerwhile starting the engine.

S Do not place feet and hands on ornear the tines when starting theengine or while the engine isrunning.

9 Do not leave the tiller unattendedwith the engine running.

10 Do not walk in front of the tillerwhile the engine is running.

11 Do not fill gasoline tank whileengine is running. Spilling gasolineon hot engine may cause a fire orexplosion.

12 Do not run the engine whileindoors. Exhaust gases are deadlypoisonous.

Your power drive train is comprised ofa variable speed pulley with fourforward speeds, reverse, and a twostep, double chain, reduction to thetines. The 1 Y4 nch tine shaft is supported bytwo self-lubricating bronze bearings. The 16 hardened tines will handle thetoughest of gardening tasks.Ten inch by 2.75 inch rib tread tiressupport the back of the tiller. The rearwheel height is adjustable for greaterversatility. The forward and penetrating acti-;nof the tiller is obtained from therotating action of the tines in thesoi I. The depth bar acts as a brakefor the tiller and controls the depthand forward speed. By lowering thesetting of the depth bar. the forwardspeed of the tiller is reduced andthe working depth of the tines isincreased. Raising the setting of thedepth bar increases the forwardspeed and reduces the workingdepth. When soil condition.s aresevere and several passes must bemade over a certain area the depthbar setting should be lowered eachtime a pass is made.Further control of tilling depth andtravel speed can be obtained byvariation of pressure on the handle.A downward pressure on the han-dles will increase the working depthand reduce the forward speed. Anupward pressure on the handles willreduce the working depth and in-crease the forward speed. The type of soil and working con-ditior-.s will determine the actualsetting of the depth bar and thehandle pressure required. When tilling ground that has not beentilled before, do not try to till to maxi-mum depth in one pass. Set the depthbar for half the depth you desire, thenreset the depth bar to full depth and goover the tilled area the second time.Till only when the soil is relatively dryand crumbles easily. If the soil is toowet when you till it will leave largeclods of soil rather than a good seedbed.

    Hintsfor Best Performance

First "walk" the tiller over to the workarea. To do this, lock the depth bar outof the way, set the throttle in the slowposition, place the control lever in theforward position and maintain a lightupward pressure on the handles. Yourtiller will "walk" over the top of theground

without the tines entering thesoil. .SIOW",,~Forward Pos~

    Bar Up

If the garden is turned over in the Fall, the soil should be finely pulverized inthe Spring. A finely pulverized seedbed is essential for germination. Springis the time to work in humus. Sixbushels per hundred square fee't and acomplete garden fertilizer at the rate offour pounds per hundred square feetis recommended.Just before planting the seeds, finelypulverize the soil and make a smoothbed.Plant your seeds as instructed on theseed packet then cover them lightlywith fine soil. You normally cover theseed with 3 times the width of theseed. On flower seeds, the soil can besifted through an old window screen.Tamp the soil gently. You must havecontact between the soil and the seed. The seeds must have water to germi-nate. Use a fine spray to preventwashing out the seeds. The larger theplants you are planting, the deeper youshould till.

    Best Performance

Plants such as grass, with shallowroots, need only two to four inchestilled soil whereas plants with a deeproot system should have a deeply tilledbed.

Till the soil as soon as it isworkable in the Spring. You can till to amaximum depth of six to eight inches.

When preparing a yard for a lawn, thesoil should be leveled so it is welldrained and free from high spots. Ifyou do not level out the irregularities inthe soil first, you will not be able to dothis once the lawn is established.E~tra care in leveling your yard beforeyou sow your seed will be well worth it.Just before planting the seeds theparticles of soil should be no largerthan a quarter inch. Water the soil tosettle the dirt. This will also show youlow spots that should be filled in beforesowing.Use a fine spray to preventdisturbing the soil. Frequent wateringis a must.
