Montrose, ColoradoMontrose is the Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Montrose County, Colorado. The city has a population of roughly 19,250 people. The main road that leads in and out of Montrose is U.S. Highway 50. The town is located on the beautiful Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains, and is well known for its regional recreational areas.

Montrose was incorporated in 1882 and named after Sir Walter Scott’s novel A Legend of Montrose. The Denver & Rio Grande railroad was built west toward Grand Junction and reached Montrose later in 1882, and the town became an important regional shipping center. It is one of the nation’s largest apparel and home furnishings retailers. In addition to selling conventional merchandise, JCPenney stores often house several leased departments such as Sephora, Seattle’s Best Coffee, salons, optical centers, portrait studios, and jewelry repair.

On April 14, 1902, founder James Cash Penney and two partners opened the Golden Rule dry-goods store in the small town of Kemmerer, Wyoming. During the following two years they opened stores in two other Wyoming frontier towns. In 1907 Penney bought out his original partners and took on new ones, beginning with Earl Corder Sams (president of the company from 1914 to 1946). When the firm was incorporated on January 17, 1913, as the J.C. Penney Stores Company, there were 34 stores in the American West. The following year the company’s headquarters were moved to New York City. In 1927 JCPenney became a publicly traded corporation listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and by 1929 it had increased the number of its stores to 1,392.

In 1988 the firm relocated its headquarters from New York City to Plano, Texas, near Dallas. The company has a partnership with Sephora, a cosmetics chain, to open Sephora outlets inside select JCPenney stores. In 2008 it launched the American Living brand, a line of clothing, accessories, and home decor developed by the American fashion designer Ralph Lauren. Later brand additions include Linden Street home furnishings and several clothing lines for juniors and young men, notably Fabulosity, by American fashion designer Kimora Lee Simmons. JCPenney has a diversified supplier base, purchasing merchandise from approximately 2,700 domestic and foreign suppliers.
