COLOURS ENTERTAINMENTLOOKING BACKDuring this year's 40th anniversary of Independencecelebrations, reflections have generally focused onpolitical milestones and prominent personalities.Accomplishments and challenges have been many, too many to represent comprehensively. And so, inpresenting its theme, "Looking Back", Colours takes adifferent perspective and presents a selective samplingof typical scenes of yesteryear, many of which are nolonger a part of the landscape today.

The banner features Father Time, looking back overthe years. Throughout the rest of the group, "LookingBack" takes us to a time when the economy wasfavoured by farming throughout the islands, and theintimate and safe living environment was evident fromfishing professionals who rode through neighbour-hoods selling their catch. We reflect on the worldfamous straw markets in Nassau and attheInternational Bazaar in Freeport, the developmentof local television and radio (Radio Bahamas/ZNS)and tertiary education (COB). We pay tribute to AirBahama, Eastern Airlines, and Pan Am airlines thattransported not only Bahamians, but moreso, thetourists who couldn't get enough of The beautiful

Bahamas.

"Looking Back" takes us to a time when entertainmentoptions ranged from the entrancing dance of theskilled and energetic Paul Meeres, to the PlayboyCasino (with Hugh Heffner in tow), to the CabaretTheatre dancers and acrobats...to Jumbey Village(cultural brainchild of the visionary Edmund Moxey, and a centre for native music, dance and Bahamian produced artwork),to Goombay Summer, fire danc-ing, and the sea parks that came before Atlantis. Ittakes us back to a time, before Kalik, when St. PauliGirl was the beer of choice, and sporting teams bear-ing that name were pacesetters.

...to a time when locals and tourists made their way toMademoiselle downtown (otherwise known as thehouse that fashion built). There, they bought cosmet-ics, native Androsia outfits, and just viewed the fash-ionable offerings of the store with the signature hibis-cus logo.

On the home front, "Looking Back" takes us to a time,in Nassau and the Family Islands, when the onlySuperwash we knew, involved a tin tub full of waterfor washing, one for rinsing, and a scrubbing board

accompanied by Omo detergent and bleach. To pre-vent sickness, and to cure it when it came, bush teawas the order of the day (whether sour leaf, orcerasee or five finger or fevergrass). This was ourpreference, compared to the synthetic medicine creat-ed by "developed" countries.

"Looking Back" recalls the pride that emerged with theestablishment ef IV current coat of arms (featured bythe Brass Section); the national currency and coins that(seen in the Backline pieces) are highlighted by thebeautiful and unique one-cent, five-cent 15-cent andand 25-cent pieces that replaced the shilling, trup-pence and the like.

Representing the challenges and struggles over theyears, tribute is paid to the HMBS Flamingo and theloss of RBDF marines in a sea tragedy that remainsforever etched in the hearts of Bahamians and friendsof The Bahamas.

Colours reflects on these former scenes, with a senseof regret, for those elements that are never to be seenagain, but moreso, a sense of gratefulness for thefoundation of strength and excellence laid by thosevery scenes from the past.

In paying tribute to him, Colours will give you snap-shots of Granny B., faithful potcake Fleabs, andscenes from his many songs and creative artwork. As

the song 'Ting and Ting' says, "Nassau become sucha funky town since ting and ting been goin' round."The days of shotgun weddings are just about gone, and most of our children know nothing about sugarapple, guinep, juju, plum, tamarind, soursop andgreen dilly.

Through his art (music and paintings), Der Brudderwas able to capture the essence of Bahamian life.Colours will pay tribute to this broad range of master-pieces created by The Bahamas' proud native son,Eddie "Der Brudder" Minnis, in song, dance and cos-tume.

Forthose who may not be familiar, the Fox Hill area is acommunity made up of different townships much likeits ancestors in African, where we descend, live andabide divided by separate tribes yet still both com-munities exist as one people. Most of the townshipsin Fox Hill can trace not only their names but their lin-eage directly to ancient tribes back in the motherlandof Africa, some of which still exist to this day. ThisBoxing Day, the Original Congos seek to bridge thisgap between the townships of Fox Hill to theirrespected tribal groups in Africa as we present thetheme: Tribes of the Fox Hill.

REDLAND SOLDIERSDAVID GOD'S ANOINTED

(SHEPHERD - WARRIOR - KING)

Yea, though I walk through the valleyof the shadow of death, I will fear noevil; For You are with me; Your rodand Your staff, they comfort me....Psalms 23 :4

King David was a man of contrasts. He was single-mindedly committed toGod„ David lived a frustrating life, first in the shadow of his brothers, then constantly on the run fromvengeful King Saul. Even after hebecame king of Israel, David wasengaged in almost constant warfareto defend the kingdom. King Davidwas a great military conqueror, buthe could not conquer himself. Heallowed one night of lust withBathsheba, and it had disastrous con-

sequences in his life.

King David's life was a roller coasterof emotional highs and lows. He leftus an example of passionate love ofGod and dozens of psalms, some ofthe most touching, beautiful poetryever written.

King David's Accomplishments: David killed Goliath, champion of thePhilistines, when David was only ayouth and Goliath a giant and veter-an warrior. David was victoriousbecause he trusted in God for the vic-tory, not himself.

He killed many of Israel's enemies inbattle. Despite several opportunities,David refused to kill King Saul, God'sfirst anointed king, who was pursuingDavid out of mad jealousy.

He became friends, like brothers, withSaul's son Jonathan, setting a modelof friendship that everyone can learnfrom. God called David a man afterhis own heart.

DANIEL THE THREE HEBREW BOYS"Blessed be the name of God forever andever, For wisdom and might are His. AndHe changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; Hegives wisdom to the wise And knowledge to those who haveunderstanding. He reveals deep andsecret things; He knows what is in thedarkness, And light dwells with Him."Daniel 2"

Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon erects agiant statue and orders that everyone inhis kingdom bow down and worship itwhen the royal band plays. The threeHebrew boys, Shadrach, Meshech, andAbednego, refuse to worship the statuebecause the God of their fathers strictlyforbid idol worship. Shadrach, Meshech, and Abednego are miraculous-ly and powerfully delivered from a rag-ing fiery furnace. "Daniel 3:28. ThenNebuchadnezzar spake, and said,Blessed be the God of Shadrach,Meshach, and Abednego, who hat senthis angel, and delivered his servants thattrusted in him

Likewise, in the sixth chapter of Daniel,Daniel's fellow presidents and princesplot to trap him, and get the then King Darius to throw him into the Lion's den. They have the King to make a law pro-hibiting petitioning anyone (God or man)but the king for thirty days. As was hiscustom, Daniel prayed toward Jerusalemthree times a day from his home. Thepresidents and princes caught him therepraying and told King Darius, who, according to his own coun-try's law, had Daniel thrown into a den ofhungry lions. God delivered faithfulDaniel from the lion's den unscratched, and King Darius is so impressed that hetoo was moved to legislate acknowledge-ment of the God of Israel.

Daniel, Shadrach, Meshech, andAbednego are examples to us today tostand firm on the Word of God. It is ourprayer that every Bahamian would callon the Name of God every day for strength, guidance and protection.

This cos-tume depicts Bahamians in grand celebration mode with the National flag anda cultural display of dancers with their musical instruments. To make this costumeeven more special, featured on it are banners adorned with slogans, "God blessThe Bahamas" and "40", representing forty years of independence. ReverendPhilip Rahming wrote in the Pledge of Allegiance that we are "One people unit-ed in love and service". I truly hope that as we cross the bridge to the future wecross it as One Bahamas.

BREAK THE SILENCE There is a rapidly increasing rate of domestic violence, child abuse and variousother forms of abuse in the Bahamas. The problem is that many of the victims aretoo young or too frightened to come forward and report the abuse. This particu-lar costume will seek to encourage the countless victims of abuse in the Bahamasto break the silence and report the abuse to help alleviate abuse in our country.

FIGHT AGAINST AIDS AIDS has been identified as the leading cause of death in The Bahamas since1994. However, The Bahamas has also witnessed a reduction in the AIDS mortal-ity rate over time. Now that more Bahamians are becoming aware and educated about the disease we must fight harder than ever to completely eradicate thespread of AIDS in our country.
