Co-sponsored by Morris S. Fogelman Jewish Student Center at Hillel of

Memphis, Pearl BBG and Facing History & Ourselves

The community is invited to join us to use the universal language of music to inspire unity, tolerance and to promote friendship and understanding across our

cultural spectrum. Our most talented students, faculty and community members will unite, perform and empower our audience with the spirit of Daniel Pearl: a journalist and musician who dedicated his life to connecting people through words and music. One of the many highlights of this year will be a unique and original piece written especially for our concert by composer Burton Beerman. “Elegy For Daniel Pearl”

for Alto Saxophone, Soprano and Dance will be performed by Prof. Allen Rippe, Tanisha Ward and Sharona Rubenstein.

Our October 23rd concert is part of the worldwide chain of concerts that links Memphis to the chain of over 800 October concerts in 51 countries

celebrating the 10th annual Daniel Pearl Music Days.

In addition Pearl BBG will presented the first “Daniel Pearl Legacy Award” to a local community member who has used his/her talents and skills to foster tolerance, build bridges and promote friendship and understanding among

people reflecting the legacy of Daniel Pearl.

Reception to follow. Parking available at the UM parking deck on Zach Curlin Rd.

On Shabbos, The New Labor PainsBy Talia R. Cohen, Special To The Jewish Week

Recently, my 20-month-old son asked for cookies for breakfast. “No,” I said, “it’s not time for cookies.” “Yeah,” he agreed. “It’s Shabbat.” (It was in fact, a Tuesday). How had he concluded — already (!!!) — that Shabbat was a day of no? I had felt relatively comfortable that Shabbat in our house was more a day of togetherness and play. But once again, he knew better. It made me think, not for the first time, about how to balance observing Shabbat in its traditional form, with ensuring that Shabbat is a day

we all appreciate and enjoy. In mulling over this question, it occurred to me that the

observance of Shabbat has flipped: where it once was about abstaining from productive work, it now seems to be about abstaining from frivolous play. In the Torah, general categories of work are forbidden and the rabbis then derived “the 39 acts of labor” from Moses’ description of how to build the mishkan, or tabernacle. When Moses mentions Shabbat in Deuteronomy, he says, “Remember that you were a slave in Egypt and the Lord your God freed you from there.” Shabbat was a sanctuary from the hard, physical labor of the week.

I can see where a day off from plowing the fields and chopping wood once felt like a well-deserved break. Today, though, I most feel the implications of Shabbat in refraining from using technology, and I’ve noticed there is a whole new language to encourage Shabbat observance. It’s about slowing down, unplugging, connecting face to face. I get it. I’m on board. It is still about tuning out the pulls of the workaday world and yet, now, Shabbat is more about distracting oneself from the exciting world around us than it is about the excitement of a day without work. And so I suppose my question is two-fold: Do we gain the same thing from a day off of play as we did from a day off of work? And is it even realistic, as we become evermore technologically glutted, to envision a day free of all technology (see: half-Shabbos)?

I don’t have the answers to either question. I can see that in tamping down our need for productivity, we allow for the humility of recognizing our place in the great wide world; that we can better appreciate that world around us when we’re not viewing it through the prism of our work, and that just in clearing out the day-to-day details of our lives, we make space for the possibility of the sacred. Is our experience in taking a day off from the rat race the same experience as a laborer being given a day of rest? Likely not. But there is something quite nice about knowing that even if what we’re refraining from is different, what we’re engaging in is just the same.

Shabbat has traditionally been a time when people get together with friends, sharing Shabbat meals, and in my own youth, children playing in each other’s backyards all afternoon. Now, though, it seems teenagers feel cut off from their friends on a Shabbat afternoon without texting and status updating and the like. When I

Talia R. Cohen

was a child, my father would itch for Friday night’s baseball scores, and might ask a passerby for news. My husband, who generally has his BlackBerry in his hand as a second thumb, itches for the constant news feed and updates he is used to receiving minute by minute.

So is Shabbat without technology sustainable? Technology sabbaticals are all the rage these days. There was the recent memoir of a woman who unplugged her teenage children for six months (“The Winter of Our Disconnect”) and there are countless blogs about families’ attempts at “technology fasting.” These are temporary fixes, not lifelong practices. And embedded in all this exalting of technology fasts is the truth of just how difficult it’s become to disengage from our 24-hour gadget gluttony.

I know that even if in our house, not every rabbinic rule is followed to the letter, the feeling of waking up on Shabbat, and intuitively knowing that the rhythm of the day is fundamentally different, is one I hope our children will treasure. So I’m hoping we can hang on to the day of rest — individually and collectively. That in our house, at least, we choose from a menu of shul and/or prayer, family and/or friends, talking and/or playing that looks different from the other days of the week. Whether or not we make our day about spiritual connection, it seems spiritually sustaining to keep our everyday concerns at bay for a fraction of the week. I’m not sure I’ll be successful, but I hope our children see the benefits of a day without, and feel it as gift, instead. Perhaps it will even be a day with cookies for breakfast.

Nature CallingThe art of Debbie Richmond and Dwayne Tiggs

October 9- November 4Opening Reception: Sunday, October 9, 2011 from 2:00-4:00 PM

About Debbie RichmondDeBBie RiChmOND is a professional artist/painter specializing

in animal portraits. Her portfolio includes work for area government, nonprofit, business, and private citizen clients. After spending her 20’s and 30’s combining USGA golf winning 20+ titles and in pursuit of family and entrepreneurial ventures, returned to painting in 1999. Ms. Richmond has

She splits her time between artist-inspired and commissioned work. Active animal lover, rescuer, and artistic contributor to the Memphis Humane Society, with a private "Kennel Klub" of four pets.

About Dwayne TiggsDWyANe TiggS’ art can be found all over the world you live in. From the

bed you wake up in, to the chairs and tables that reside in the kitchen you cook in. Even the kitchen itself. The restaurant or bar you dine or drink at. A display by which you display or purchased your products from. A float you watched pass by in the local parade. Even a set in a movie or play you have watched. As he builds the environment you live, work and play in, and he strives to do it in a natural way.

Tiggs’ artistic furniture makes use of modern technologies for design, combined with traditional methods of construction, while making use of the the greenest materials possible. These materials include FSC certified woods, formaldehyde

free plywoods, low to no V.O.C. finishes and water based stains.

“Creating, whether it be on the computer or in the shop, rendering designs out of wood, metal, glass and even light, its what I live for!’, says Tiggs. “I quest to design projects that maintain a balance of function and ascetic appeal. In high school I was given the basic tools and skills to take raw materials, (wood) and yield to my desires. From that point I make it my goal to expound upon the lessons learned to push the limits of my abilities, imagination, and the materials themselves.”

Back To School NightSeptember 7, 2011

Preschool-Kindergarten teachers were thrilled to welcome so many families to our Annual Back to School Night in early September. The evening began with a special session for new families. All families then joined together to enjoy snacks and a slideshow with pictures of their children engaged in all of the wonderful learning activities offered at the MJCC. Dr. Michelle Gross, Director of the Early Childhood Center, presented a slideshow with school highlights that included descriptions of our special activities throughout the year, as well as brief video clips demonstrating learning in PE, Music, and Creative Movement. The main part of the evening involved classroom visits to learn more about the curriculum and all of the learning that takes place during each and every moment of every school day. Thank you to all of the parents who attended!

Healing Meditation Part I with Daniel Lamontagne

A teacher of meditation for the past 20 years, Daniel Lamontagne has experienced the profound benefits of meditation in his own life and witnessed the positive changes it has brought about in the lives of many others. His standard classes are eight-week programs that teach participants how to stay centered in the present and to develop and strengthen their natural abilities for healing, intuition, and mindfulness. Anytime One Week TrialWe like to let new swimmers try the swim team anytime for a week to let them know that it will be a good fit before they sign up. If they decide to sign up in the middle of a session we will prorate the registration for what is left of the session. Participating on the Blue Dolphin Swim Team gives the swimmers great physical exercise and produces stronger cardiovascular systems which will carry over in adult life. Don’t stop at “swimmer”. they become STRONg SWimmeRS.

Study ShackStart off the new school year on the right foot by sending

your child to STUDY SHACK after school. With qualified teen staff, an amazing game

room and a brand new Wellness/Fitness component, this is the perfect

Hustle to Cardio Kick Boxing to obstacle courses designed to be challenging and FUN! We will be offering free classes for all Study Shack eligible kids on both September 5th and October 10th so stay tuned for time and location. Each wellness class your child participates in will count as a session on the Study Shack card and they are, of course, encouraged to stay at Study Shack for the remainder of the day!

Is your child enrolled in another amazing JCC activity such as swim team, sports, dance or tae kwon do? If so don’t worry, our staff will make sure they have changed clothes and we will escort them to and from the activity.

Purchase a Study Shack card at the MJCC front desk. Get 20 sessions for $200 and you can use the sessions as needed. One day drop-in is $12.

This will be fun for all ages and the silliest Olympics they have ever been to. Drop off your kids at 6:30pm on November 19th and pick them up at 9pm. During this time they will enjoy a pasta dinner (after the dizzy bat race of course) and will have loads of fun competing in all different types of events.
