OY MAMA MIA! Broadway Star Dudu Fisher to Blend Broadway

Favorites and Israeli Music at MJCC GalaBroadway star, Dudu Fisher, will be performing in concert with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Shai Bachar at the Memphis JCC Annual Gala November 14, 2010 at the Germantown Performing Arts Center. The concert’s beneficiaries are the 200+ Center families who, during these trying economic times, cannot afford to pay full fees for Center services. These families include Seniors who benefit from Center services, including everything from meals and social programs to wellness and educational activities; families who need help so that their children can go to pre-school or Day Camp; and singles who have lost their job or have seen their wages severely cut back. For all of them, the Memphis Jewish Community Center represents a safety net and the Center is depending on Gala supporters–on YOU—so that we can continue to meet these needs.

Though perhaps best known for his Broadway portrayal of Jean Val Jean in “Les Miserables,” Dudu Fisher is enthusiastically appreciated by Jewish and non-Jewish music lovers for a repertoire that includes Broadway musicals, operatic, popular, French, Hebrew, Yiddish and even “rock and roll” music. Dudu Fisher is especially unique is the way he blends Broadway hits and Jewish/Israeli music in a theatrical performance that is both vocally superb and humorous. As the New York Times wrote, “Mr. Fisher’s show has something for everyone...He can bring a tear to the eye (his or the audience’s), a catch to the throat, a smile to the lips, and call forth laughter.” His performances have spanned the globe from Sydney’s Opera House to Madison Square Garden, from the London symphony to the Israeli Philharmonic and Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater. Dudu Fisher’s singing and stage presence invariably bring passion and joy to millions everywhere.

Though Dudu Fisher is internationally renowned for his tenor voice, he is much more than a singer -- he is a phenomenon. How many other Orthodox Jews have performed in one of Broadway’s most popular shows -- without once violating the Sabbath?

Fisher, who played the lead role, Jean Valjean, in Les Miserables, on Broadway, managed to do just that. He was allowed to have a substitute fill in for him during Friday evening and Saturday matinee performances. Even though his stint on Broadway was almost a decade ago, Fisher still speaks about the experience with a degree of awe:

“That I was asked to do the role in the first place was in itself unbelievable. But that the producers agreed to allow a substitute to sing for me so that I might continue to observe Shabbat and

holidays, that was, I think, the biggest achievement in my life.”Born in Petach Tikvah, Israel, Fisher became cantor of the

Great Synagogue in Tel Aviv. During a visit to London, he happened to see a performance of Les Miserables and was smitten. When the play was brought to Israel, although Fisher had had no previous professional stage experience, he felt he was destined to play the starring role. He remained in the part for three years.

He has also recorded more than 20 albums and sung the role of Steven Spielberg’s Moses in The Prince of Egypt.

Fisher’s upcoming concert at GPAC on Sunday, November 14, is “a mixture of B r o a d w a y s h o w tunes from Les Miz, Phantom, Fiddler, and of course, music from Israel and talking about the current situation in Israel.” Fisher has quite a lot to say on that subject -- and also what he believes to be his role in the situation:

“I want to talk abou t t he cu r ren t situation in Israel. I want to share with the Memphis audience my optimism about Israel. Here, in the U.S. , everyone thinks that nobody ‘lives’ in Israel anymore -- that there is only conflict. When I remain in the U.S. for a long time, I begin to

think the same thing. But it’s not so. For example, when I went back to Israel after Pesach, I arrived at 5:30 -- and already at 8:30, my friends came by to take me to a cafe. That’s the message I want to spread here -- that we Israelis are alive, and that we will continue to stay alive.”

Fisher sees himself as a “bridge between peoples” -- vis a vis his music.

“In Israel there are factions, as you know -- the Ethiopians versus the Russians, the secular versus the observant, etc. I represent a bridge. After all, I am an Orthodox Jew who appears on Broadway. Music and song bring people together. And now more than ever is a time for us to stick together and remain united.”

Reservations for the Gala can be made at the Center’s reception desk or by phone with a credit card. Gala seats are available at $150 and $300; Sponsorship begins at $1,000 and includes a VIP ticket package.

Unit 78 was designed to get teens off of the couch and interested in all the things that are happening every day around them. Teens will participate in leadership activities that are challenging and interactive. They will also develop leadership skills through various team-building games, hypothetical role-playing and various Tikkun Olam projects here in Memphis. But this was not all work and no play…teens will go on field trips and plan programs for camp-wide events. Each afternoon the campers spend doing self-chosen activities taught by professionals in associated field. Self-chosen activities will include Graphic Novel Creation, Movie Making, Fitness, Art, Sports, Cooking, Dance, and Martial Arts.

Fourth- sixth grade Campers get wellness option at Day Camp

This summer campers entering fourth- sixth grade will have the wellness option at MJCC Day Camp. Traditionally all MJCC campers have Red Cross Learn to Swim classes in the morning. Because of the strength of the swim program and the Aquatics staff, many of the fourth-sixth grade campers have already graduated from the highest levels of the swim program. For those fourth-sixth grade campers who have graduated from the swim program, the professionals from the MJCC Wellness staff will be providing a high energy, age appropriate fitness program. Samantha Alperin, Camp Committee Chair, said, “the Day Camp has always tried to expose the campers to new and different activities. Lauren, Danny and Betzy have a strong belief that children need to learn to include wellness activities in their daily lives in order for fitness to be a lifetime practice.” All campers will be swim-tested during the first week of camp. After they have tested out of level five, they will be given the option to continue their swim training or participate in the new fitness program. For more information, about camp programs for children entering four-sixth grade, please contact Betzy Weinblatt-Lynch at 761-0810 or [email protected].

The Artist’s WayDiscover and recover Your Creative SelfThis course is for anyone interested in living more creatively through practicing an art; even more broadly, anyone interested in practicing the art of creative living! For over a decade Julia Cameron has taught workshops on how to let people be creative! Through these workshops and this book, The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron has touched over a million lives while using, teaching and sharing tools that she has created in order to discover and recover your creative self!

The primary purpose and effect of The Artist's Way is to put people in touch with the power of their own internal creativity. This book frees people to be more creative in many different ways: First, it helps dismantle negative mythologies about artists. Second, it helps people discover their own creative force, access it, and express it more freely. Third, it provides people with an awareness about their self-destructive behaviors and allows them to see more clearly what the impediments on

their individual path might be. Finally, the book helps people identify and celebrate their desires and dreams and make the plans to accomplish them. It teaches people how to support and nurture themselves as well as how to find others who will support them in fulfilling their dreams.

This course will be facilitated by Amy Israel. Amy has experience with The Artist’s Way course as well as other workships on self discovery! The price of the class includes The Artist’s Way book. For more

information or questions, please contact Amy at 761-0810, ext. 108.

Underwater Digital Video Stroke Analysis

See Yourself Swim...See Yourself Swim Better

The MJCC Underwater Video Stroke Analysis helps you see yourself in action and learn techniques to make yourself a better swimmer.

Our Digital Swim Analysis combines cutting edge technology with an experienced coach to provide unparalleled insights into swimming stroke performance and suggestions for improvement. Benefits of Video Stroke Analysis:• High swimmer-to-coach ratios during routine practice

sessions do not permit long-term observation of a single athlete’s swimming. This is one-on-one.

• Above-water observation of a swimmer’s below-water movements is hampered by light refraction, distorting the viewer’s impressions. Our video technology capabilities permit both above and below water filming of a swimmer’s stroke technique from multiple vantage points for detailed analysis.

• Average athletes have difficulty translating auditory/verbal instructions into physical movements. This is visual learning with audio critique.

• The strength of these visual cues, according to learning studies, increases the likelihood that a swimmer will be able to correct and improve his or her technique.

• Each client possesses technical traits, training backgrounds, strengths, and weaknesses that are unique, necessitating an individualized approach to analysis and remediation. All taping, analysis, and instruction is one-on-one.

Present‘New’ Swimming Stroke Correction by Underwater Video Analysis

The MJCC Aquatics Department can capture the underwater performance of swimmers to revise discrepancies in their strokes and recommend changes to increase the swimmers speed and efficiency. We do this one swimmer at a time so it’s one on one. A good swimming instructor always uses demonstration because visual learning is so important. Young swimmers benefit greatly not only by demonstration but by seeing themselves and seeing themselves swim underwater. It’s new, it’s fun, it works and it’s included!

* $65.00 per one hour session ( $50.00 MJCC members )* Takes about an hour with concentration on one stroke* Video of both under & above water* Audio critique of key elements in need of correction* Provide corrections and drills to improve stroke* Walk out with a personal DVD* Use for frequent review to improve stroke* To reserve a spot call Danny Fadgen at 761-0810 ext. 118

Kids Triathlon Club, 7-15 years old

If you like swimming, bike-riding and running around then this is for you. Danny Fadgen will transform you into a TRIATHLETE. The end result will be in September when you will compete in the St. Georges Kid’s Triathlon. All Triathlon Club members will get stroke technique and training in the pool, running workouts to improve their speed and stamina and learn the tricks of the trade of speed and efficiency on the bike. We will put it all together with transition training to get you ready for the big event. It’s fun and it will get anyone in shape. Parents are welcome to come out and train with the kids. You get 2 for 1.
