Chief Instructor

Sonny Kim is a sixth degree (dan) black belt and the Chief instructor at the Japanese Karate-do dojo. He is also a WTKO (World Traditional Karate Organization)International Instructor and Examiner for the Mid-America WTKO Region. He studied several styles of martial arts, before taking up the style of Shotokan Karate-do in 1977. Sensei’s Kim training philosophy focuses on a continuous emphasis on basic techniques, regardless of age or experience level. Students are encouraged more to enhance their fundamental knowledge and concentrate less on training for competition. He believes that only through the mastery of these essential basic can students fully develop themselves.

Sensei Kim has been a Police Officer for the City ofCincinnati since 1986.

Karate for Adults

You will find that the adult classes at the Japanese Karate-Do help each student meet their individual goals by faithfully teaching the basics of Shotokan Karate in an organized, systematic and balanced method. This allows our adults to build camaraderie and confidence in supportive atmosphere. The classes are designed to give you a good physicalworkout, while at the same time stimulate your mental and emotional awareness and focus. You will learn to focus your energy on what’s important and develop good breathing habits which will help you cope with situations in your day-to-day life, whether you’re caught in a traffic jam, at the store, at work or at home.

Karate for Children/Teens

Training in Shotokan Karate can build self-confidence and create a positive and challenging experience. The opportunities for self-development through Karate training are significant, but the benefits of involving your child in a Karate program are far greater. Traditional Karate training provides children with the strength to say “NO” to disruptive peer pressure, and to replace the negative with the positive.

A Safe Approach to Karate Training

The Japanese Karate-do, Traditional Shotokan Karate Association method trains each student using a systematic approach toward his or her development in Shotokan Karate. Our training combines the mental and physical discipline necessary to improve one’s flexibility, strength, speed and mental sharpness.

Introductory Class

All new students without any prior training must at-tend a scheduled introductory class. This class requires the brand new student to learn the three K’s of Karate. Kihon, Kata, and Kumite.

Kihon or basic techniques are taught to the new student, which consist of blocks, punches, kicks, and stances.

Kata or form is a set combination of moves done ina particular pattern against multiple imaginaryopponents.

Kumite or sparring consists of sanbon kumite or basic three-step sparring to apply the basic technique (Ki-hon) that he or she has learned so far.

The introductory class is also taught correct attitude and etiquette involved with training in the art of Karate-do. It is specifically designed to prepare new students for training in the regular group class.

“One of the most striking features of Karate is that it may be engaged in by anyone, young or old, strong or weak, male or female.”.
