    Whats happening in Progressive Training?

    From the CEO

We are in the third month of 2013 already, I cant believe how quickly the weeks are passing

by! I joined the team at Progressive Training late in January and it certainly is a great place to

be, I am truly amazed by the depth of skill across the team and the can do attitude that runs

n the blood of this organisation. Client focus is the cornerstone of any successful business

and it certainly shines through as a major contributor to the business success enjoyed by

Progressive over the years. I am excited to be part of the team and look forward to working

with the staff, consultants and clients of Progressive Training.By way of introduction - my background spans across training and education, management,

etail sales, customer service, staff development, team-building and business planning gained

n both private and public sector organisations. My most recent positions have included

Manager Customer Relations at City of Greater-Geraldton and prior to that as Manager, Client

Service Team at WFI (Insurance) and Branch Manager at Corporate Express. My formal qualications include a

Graduate Certicate in Management (Professional Practice), Bachelor of Applied Science Library Studies and an

Advanced Diploma of Management. I have had quite a long break from the VET sector (having previously worked

or TAFE in a past life!) and it is exciting to be back and to see how much things have changed and evolved. The

ocus for RTOs upon a national skills quality framework of training delivery and assessment within an environment

of legislated compliance and regulation against the essential standards for continuing registration is one such area.

More importantly though, the focus on quality outcomes that satisfy the individual needs of participants balancedwith the ever changing needs of the workplace in order to support employee retention strategies and build a skilled

workforce, particularly in regional areas, is an area of great interest to me and I look forward to working with our

clients to achieve success in this challenging area.

Over more than twenty ve (25) years I have had the pleasure of working in various parts of WA including Port

Hedland but have to say the lifestyle, family ties, climate, beaches, natural environment and friendliness of Geraldton

have always held a special something for me and I have called Geraldton home since 2000 when I re-settled here

with my wonderful husband, Don. We have a blended family of 4 adult children and 9 grandchildren so I probably

dont need to tell you much more about my hobbies and interests! When time permits I love to walk on the beach,

ravel, go to the theatre and read and catch the odd sleep-in! The travel agenda is looking quite exciting this year

oo, with a planned cruise on the River Rhine combined with the opportunity to take in the sights of Germany and

    The Netherlands.

The learning curve over the past few weeks has been pretty steep (horizontal actually!) and I am sure there will be

plenty more to come. Nonetheless, it has been made all that much easier for me by having the resources and

collaborative spirit of a strong team to draw on and I look forward to the weeks and months ahead.

    Til next time

Progressive Training is now compliant with the National VET

    regulator ASQA

On the 22nd January 2013, Progressive Training was advised by the National VET

Regulator (ASQA) that, after a lengthy process taking some 5 months, they were now

ully compliant with the Standards for NVR Registered Training Organisations. Previously,

Progressive was registered with the State based Training Accreditation Council.

This is a signicant milestone and is a result that could not have been achieved without the

commitment of all staff and consultants involved in the process. The Directors extend a big

Thankyou for your individual and team efforts.

While almost all staff and consultants at Progressive were involved in some way, and we

acknowledge each of you, the Directors would like to specically acknowledge the very

signicant contributions made by the Internal Audit Team, the Management Committee,

our second party auditor; Geoff Oliver and Graem Watts. Again, thankyou for your valuable

    contributions.Geoff Feddersen

    Director

Thursday the 28th of February, 2013, marked an exciting day for both Progressive Training and Glass Co, as

a celebration took place to congratulate Nicholas Jolliffe, Liam Bertolini and Blake West who were the rst 3

apprentices from Glass Co to complete their apprenticeships. During the celebration, Nicholas, Liam and Blake were

presented with their Certicates which made ofcial the successful completion of their training. The achievement of

his milestone has been in the making for some 4 years and is very signicant for both Glass Co and Progressive

Training (WA) Pty Ltdas well as for apprentice training and the industry.

A partnership between Glass Co and Progressive Training was formed when Glass Co went looking for an

alternative to sending their apprenticeships to Perth for training. The 3 apprenticeships were fully completed in

Geraldton, while maintaining excellence in training with highly qualied local personnel (Nancy Kirby and Dean

West, as well as other senior tradespeople at Glass Co). The partnership between Glass Co and Progressive

Training to achieve this outcome is indeed something of which to be proud.

During the celebration, Todd West, the CEO of Glass Co said, the discussions and negotiations that have taken

place over a considerable length of time with the apprentice board, government departments, industry training

councils and associations have nally paid off with the completion and qualication of the rst three apprentices.

t has been very satisfying to be able to work in such a exible way with everyone involved and especially with the

ocal Registered Training Organisation, Progressive Training. Another two apprentices are expected to complete

heir apprenticeships in May. Glass Co will continue to invest in the workforce as this cements the future for our

    ndustry.

ts the culture of quality and everyones commitment to the outcomes of excellence at Progressive Training that

helps to make being the Quality Assurance/VET Coordinator such a pleasure.

For example, the roll out of the new high risk Work Safe Units of competency, completing the mapping of

assessment tools and Resources could have been a nightmare for someone like me who doesnt specialise in the

    High Risk Training area.

Luckily I am surrounded by individuals such as Graem Watts who stepped up and acted in thendustry advisor capacity to make sure that the outcomes of the unit met the actual job processes

allowing for a smooth transition to the new UOCs with a real focus on job activities.

Thanks heaps Graem and all the other team members who continually step up and go the extra mile

to ensure we continue not only a standard of quality to our regulatory requirements but also a

high standard of client service and relevance to their particular industry areas.David Baker, Q/A/VET Coordinator

On Friday the 22nd February, Josh, Jenny and Stacey went to the GoGero Digi-Hub at 71 Marine Terrace where

he Digital Hub and Geraldton Digital Enterprises are housed. Both programs are aimed at providing local

esidents, businesses, and not-for-prot organisations with training in digital literacy skills and to help them to

actively participate in the National Broadband Network (NBN)-enabled digital economy. These initiatives will also

demonstrate the opportunities presented by the NBN and how households and organisations may be able to take

advantage of these opportunities by connecting with it (www.cgg.gov.au/residents/digital-hub). Here we were

provided with free training on social media and how it can benet businesses. The session looked at all the different

channels available to market a business such as Facebook, Linked In and Twitter to name a few, as well as ways to

connect with existing and potential customers. Just for attending this session, the staff at Progressive Training (WA)

Pty Ltdare now eligible for 4 hours of free training on various digital enterprise related topics of our choice. Besides

he fabulous trainer, the free session and the extra 4 hours of free training, we were also provided with a range of

ree cakes and biscuits! A great way to spend the afternoon and I would highly recommend the training for any other

small to medium or not-for-prot organisations. Stacey Ackley, Operations Manager

Progressive Training Staff are now showing off their new polo shirts as part of the new uniforms.

    Progressive Trainings hardworkers

Here at Progressive some spend their time working like DavidBaker (QA/VET coordinator), by polishing up the number 8 street

number. Others (Paul Davies, Director) like to spend their time

drinking a nice cold iced coffee after a hard day at work. We

appreciate the hard effort they both put in, Thankyou.

    Bill Belsons Photographic Adventures

One of the best ways to recharge the batteries is to get out amongst nature and what better place to go than this

wonderful section of coastline. It was great to get away from the heat of Geraldton and it was also revitalising to

explore the beautiful beaches and ranges of this area. Many times I had whole beaches to myself and the beaches

here are a blue like nowhere else.

One of the birds I was hoping to see and photograph here is the Carnabys Black-Cockatoo which is a threatened

species. I have photographed them in the Fitzgerald River National Park before but on this occasion they were not to

    be found.

There are a number of rare or endangered species in the Fitzgerald River National Park. The Western Bristlebird,

Western Ground Parrot, Western Whipbird and the Malleefowl are some of the birds. Some mammals such as theTammar Wallaby and Woylie, both of which are threatened species, are known to inhabit the mallee and heath

areas of the park. The site contains over 1800 species of plant with 250 of these being rare and 62 being known to

be found only within the connes of the park. Some species of interest include the royal hakea, qualup bell, scarlet

banksia, showy banksia, bell-fruit mallee, pea owers, feather owers, many species of eucalypts and bottlebrushes.

am planning on returning again later in the year to capture more of the beauty of this region. Maybe next time I will

come back with shots of the elusive Carnabys Black-Cockatoo!

Bill Belson our resident photographer recently went on a photographic

trip to the Hopetoun, Bremer Bay and Esperance areas. This area is well

known for its bio-diversity, especially the Fitzgerald River National Park

which is known as an International Biosphere Reserve. The following

statement is from the DEC website Western Australia is one of the most

biologically diverse regions in the world. The south-west of WA is one of

the worlds 34 internationally recognised terrestrial hotspots for

biodiversity and the only one recognised in Australia.

    Progressive Trainings own Valentine

From everyone at Progressive Training we would like to thank

Jenny Rolston, CEO for surprising all the staff on Valentines

day by sharing some love around in the form of some yummy

    chocolates.

Training with the West Coast Eagles

On Monday 25th February, one of our Directors, Geoff Feddersen, put on his sneakers after

accepting an invitation from Patrick Holden from Bankwest to join the West Coast Eagles

    raining night at Patersons Stadium.

Upon arrival, Bankwest provided a polo shirt and a brieng took place. From the brieng, Geoff

knew this was going to be fun but was concerned when informed that there was a physio area

or those niggles that might occur, a drinks stand with Gatorade and a warm up which startedwith a jog around the perimeter, followed by stretches....?

The training activities that followed were led by Darren Glass, Josh Kennedy (a Northampton

boy!), Andrew Gaff, Scott Lycett and Ash Smith. Despite dodging multiple footballs raining from

he air while being kicked back and forwards at goals end, and some friendly tackles to the

ground, Geoff survived the training session and managed to walk unaided from the ground.

The evening included a tour of the Paterson Stadium facilities along with some drinks and nger

ood while networking and overlooking the playing eld. It was an excellent evening and all

players were willing to sign the Eagles jumper that Geoffs son Kieren insisted he take with him.

Geoff really appreciated the invitation from Patrick Holden, Relationship Manager - Bankwest

Business and would recommend Patrick if anyone is contemplating any business relatednance, having had excellent service from him personally. You can contact Patrick by email:

    [email protected]

Thank you to the Eagles players who attended and willingly gave their signatures.

Zimbabwe AdventuresThe festive season was an interesting one for the Finance Assistant, Inno, who spent most of his

ime in Zimbabwe where a lot of exciting things happened. On the 10th of December, 2012, Inno

got legally married to the most beautiful girl in the world, Siphetheni (or Stephanie as many of the

ofce staff like to call her). It was one of Innos most sensational occasions of all time!

Another interesting incident that happened while in Zimbabwe was when Inno and his new wife

Siphetheni got stuck in the middle of nowhere for a whole night! They had experienced a heavy

down pour that day and the roads were covered in water. As they were driving, their car skidded

nto a drain as a result of the slippery roads.

t was around 11pm when the incident occurred and so, it was hard to get any assistance. Around

2am, they managed to ag down a truck whose driver thought it would be a good idea to tow the

car out of the trench. This sounded like a great idea but, as there was nowhere to tie the rope to

besides the radiator, it actually made things worse. The truck driver was unable to tow the car out

of the ditch, but instead, managed to break a few things on the car. This left Inno and his wife with

no choice but to sleep in the car for the night. A very eventful time, but luckily, the next morning, hey managed to get help from the nearby residents.

As far as nance work is concerned, things are going well. Innos passion for numbers has made

his job an interesting one and its always a pleasure working for Progressive.
