More than 300 individuals gathered at the Westin New Orleans Canal Place’s Grand Ballroom on Friday, February 7, to celebrate an event that was never supposed to happen – NO/AIDS Task Force’s 30th Anniversary.

“When NO/AIDS was founded in 1983, they called it a task force because it was supposed to be temporary. No one thought then that AIDS would still be with us 10, much less 30 years later,” remarked Noel Twilbeck, CEO of NO/AIDS Task Force.

The spring of 2014 is an exciting and busy one here at NO/AIDS. We celebrated the agency’s 30th Anniversary and launched CrescentCare, a new community health center with a broader mission – to provide quality care for all people, not just those with HIV/AIDS. The past 30 years has taught us a lot, and we are thrilled to be able to share that knowledge with our entire community.

Over the course of this year, you are going to see some changes happen. You will begin to see the CrescentCare logo and branding on some of our mailings and communications, and in some cases it will replace the NO/AIDS branding. I can assure you that NO/AIDS isn’t going anywhere. All of our programs and services will remain intact. Our events like the NO/AIDS WALK, Dining Out For Life and Art Against AIDS will continue to be held and will continue to benefit our HIV/AIDS care and services.

We are still working out the details of exactly how the transition from NO/AIDS to CrescentCare will occur over the course of the year. NO/AIDS is a brand and an organization that many of our supporters like you hold a special place for in their hearts. We are mindful of that throughout this process. All we ask is that you are patient with us as we continue to evolve. If at any point you have questions or need clarification about the transition to CrescentCare, I am happy to discuss it by phone or in person to ease your concerns. As always, we are thankful for your support, and so thrilled to have you join us as we turn the next page in our history.

Sincerely,

Noel TwilbeckCEO, NO/AIDS Task Force

From the CEO

First CrescentCare Site, The Family Care Services Center, is Open!

Last year, NO/AIDS Task Force assumed operation of the FACES program which provides HIV & AIDS social services to women and their families. The program had previously been operated by Children’s Hospital. FACES came under the NO/AIDS umbrella of services at the same time that planning for CrescentCare services and locations was beginning in earnest. Knowing that FACES clients needed access to primary medical care services and that the Task Force had expanded its mission to caring for all people, we decided that the first CrescentCare clinic would be the Family Care Services Center, located at 4640 S. Carrollton Ave. The clinic’s primary focus is women, children, infants and youth. It offers regular primary medical care as well as HIV specialty care.

The larger CrescentCare facility at 3308 Tulane Avenue is currently under construc-tion and expected to be open by July. Until that time, the Family Care Services

Center is accepting all new patients for CrescentCare. If you are interested in becoming a patient or would like to learn more about the new Family Care Services Center, call, or visit them online. Walk in patients are also accepted. Hours of operation are 8:30 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Evening clinic hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 5 to 8 pm.

At 30th Anniversary Gala, NO/AIDS Unveils CrescentCare and Plans to Open New Community Health Centers That Will Serve Larger Community

As we celebrate 30 years of the NO/AIDS Task Force, we are continuing our tradition - growing and changing to meet the needs in our community. The healthcare landscape is changing dramatically. A few years ago, we recog-nized that in order to keep doing what we're doing and be sustainable, it would be necessary to expand our mission.

We studied, listened to our community and realized there were many who needed our help: partners, children, mothers and fathers of our current patients; our low-income neighbors with little or no insurance; service-industry folks without traditional insurance. And just like we answered a call 30 years ago, we are responding now to the need of the larger community for quality, comprehensive medical care.

We are grateful to see how much the face of HIV and AIDS has changed. A diagnosis no longer means a death sentence. Thanks to advances in medications and medical therapies, we are now able to help our patients maintain long, healthy, productive lives. In 30 years of service, we've learned a great deal. We know about common medical conditions, about aging, about mental health and preventive medicine. We're now in a position to take this great knowledge and best practices out to the larger population in need.

We started this expansion process in 2010, and in November 2013, we received a grant allowing us toprovide primary care services to the broader population through a Federally Qualified Health Center, which we have named, CrescentCare.

Under the CrescentCare family, we will open community health centers that will serve our larger community. Inclu-sivity will be our hallmark as we provide comprehensive medical and supportive services, regardless of a persons ability to pay. CrescentCare will offer primary care, family

and pediatric care, obstetrics and gynecology services, behavioral health and dental services through our commu-nity health centers.

We are proud to announce, our flagship center will be at 3308 Tulane Avenue. We will have three floors of the building and it will be open by July 2014.

CrescentCare is a healthcare provider created to meet the increasing need for health services at the local level. CrescentCare by design will expand into an ever more responsive healthcare service for our neighborhoods, matching each communities' needs and identity. And in taking this leadership role in bringing quality healthcare to the most in need in the Crescent City, we will improve the quality of life for our entire community.

But let's make one thing very clear - CrescentCare is an extension of our current services. NO/AIDS Task Force will continue current HIV services at our existing locations: the main offices and HIV clinic at the Tulane Towers, the CAN office on Frenchmen, The Movement on Esplanade Ave., FACES on Carrollton Ave., Exchange Support Services and Exchange House in Houma, AIDSLaw office in Baton Rouge, and Food For Friends at First Unitar-ian Universalist Church.

It is through CrescentCare and additional funding opportunities that we will be able to continue to offer all the essential services that NO/AIDS currently provides and offer total community healthcare to the public as well.

Our new health center on Tulane Avenue will offer LGBT services, primary care services for HIV+ clients, as well as an Infectious Disease Referral Center for other Federally Qualified Health Centers.

Art took center stage at the 27th Annual Art Against AIDS Gala, but the party started before the doors opened at the New Orleans Museum of Art on Saturday, December 7, 2013. In keeping with the theme, “Young at Art,” guests were welcomed by a stilt walker, a juggling mime, a hula-hoop performance artist and a glass of sparkling holiday cheer. Through the museum colonnade wafted the sounds of the evening’s opening act --The Gay Men’s Chorus of New Orleans -- performing holiday songs on the steps of the Great Hall. The evening continued with a stellar line up including The Sirens of New Orleans, legendary burlesque performer Roxie Le Rouge, and from Broadway Bares, Patrick Boyd. The Honorable South and DJ Robbie Martin rounded out the entertainment. Chef Houcine Harrabi of our new Food For Friends’ kitchen stole the culinary show with his Tunisian twist on New Orleans’ party food. More than 20 other local restaurants offered signature dishes and sweet treats. Our Holiday Boutique was filled with ornaments created by nearly 30 local school art programs along with custom jewelry by metalsmith Bonnie Miller and spectacular images our city captured by Belgian-born photographer Nathalie DuBois. Our silent auction included work by our Honorary Co-Chairs and local artists David Harouni and Sarah Ashley Longshore as well as other local artists. A Caribbean island vacation donated by Elite Island Resorts was won by Tim Fields. Special thanks to our Title sponsor, Chevron and our Presenting sponsors Avita Drugs Pharmacy and The John Burton Harter Charitable Trust. Many thanks to our committee chairs and committee members and all who helped raise over $95,000 at this year’s event

Saints & Sinners Festival Celebrates LGBT Literature in the Heart of The French Quarter for 11th Year!

Mark your calendars for the 2014 Saints & Sinners Literary Festival from Thursday, May 15 through Sunday, May 18 at The Hotel Monteleone in the French Quarter. Now in its 11th year, the festival has grown into an internationally-recognized event that brings together a who’s who of LGBT publishers, writers and readers from throughout the United States and beyond. The festival, held over four days each spring, features panel discussions and master classes around literary topics that provide a forum for authors, editors, and publishers to talk about their work for the benefit of emerging writers and the enjoyment of fans of LGBT literature.

At present, we’re still finalizing details of the full schedule and list of speakers for the 2014 festival, but hopefully we can whet your appetite by telling you that both Edmund White and Carol Anshaw will be making their first time appearances at Saints & Sinners. They both kick off their weekend presenting a master class: Edmund White leads a class on the art of writing a memoir, while Carol Anshaw will help participants take real-life experiences and turn them into fiction.

It all kicks off on the evening of Thursday, May 15, with the book launch party for the 5th Annual Saints & Sinners Short Fiction Anthology at the Hotel Monteleone. Make sure to visit sasnola.org for the full list of master classes. Sign up for the festival’s email updates while there, and be among the first to know when the full schedule goes live.
