As 2012 gets underway I am sure everyone has thoughts of New Year’s resolutions. One may be to get out to training classes as regularly as possible. I could go on ad nauseam, but I won’t. My resolution every year is, well, not to make any resolutions. I just try to review the past year and see what I could improve on, at home, at work, for hobbies; whatever I think could have/should have been better, and set some tasks to achieve better results. Behaviour modification - it is hard, very hard, especially for changing lifelong habits, so I look for the little steps. Why am I going on about resolutions? Well, I do not believe there will be a great disaster as predicted by the Mayans, but I think this may be a year for significant change – just a feeling, nothing I know for certain; and, if change is in the wind, I hope that everyone in the Toronto Wado-Kai organization experiences changes for the good. As 2012 gets underway I am sure everyone has thoughts of New Year’s resolutions. One may be to get out to training classes as regularly as possible. Another might be to attend the annual Training Camp in June, especially if you have not done so yet. Maybe another is to perfect a particular kata towards an award-winning performance. MONDAY & WEDNESDAY:

7:35PM TO 8:35PM

Our annual Children’s Invitational Tournament was held on December 10, 2011.

This special 30th Anniversary Tournament was a resounding success, and it is with thanks to many of you for supporting us with your students, your judging, and providing food and toys for the YWCA food bank.

Sensei Carlos was surprised and happy as he received a citation from the City of Oshawa presented by Mayor John Henry. A citation from Premier Dalton McGuinty was presented by Oshawa-Whitby Wado-Kai Executive Kim Ellis, and a citation from Prime Minister Stephen Harper was presented by Oshawa-Whitby Wado-Kai Executive Theresa Virgin. He was also delighted with a plaque from Toronto Wado-Kai presented by Sensei Dave Manara.

Sensei Carlos created an interesting video presentation, depicting the last 30 years of Oshawa-Whitby Wado-Kai, which included photographs and film clips. Our very own disc-jockey and float manager Dan Kuczkowski created the musical accompaniment. The whole presentation was outstanding. The audience was very impressed and many of the Sensei saw themselves on the screen with no grey hair, or in some cases—more hair altogether!

Sensei Carlos also surprised us by participating in an Iaido demonstration, along with guest Sensei’s Jim Wilson, Phil Anderson, Martin Stabler, Eric Hovland, and Ron Mattie who was recently awarded World Champion in Iaido at the World Championship held in Italy in October 2011.

Some guests of honour included Sensei Dave Manara, President of Toronto Wado-Kai, Sensei Ron Mattie and Denis Labbé from the Welland Shintani Wado-Kai Federation, Sensei Neil Taylor, Shotokan JSKA. (Sensei Carlos’ first black belt student), and Sensei Heather Cant-Woodward (one of Sensei Carlos’ first child students at the Durham College Dojo).

After a beautiful rendition of “Oh Canada”, sung by our very own Oshawa-Whitby Wado-Kai Executive Sue Kuczkowski, the tournament began.

We really appreciate all the judges from our sister clubs, Ajax-Pickering, Brooklin-Whitby, Clarington, Minden, Oshawa-Whitby, Oshawa Zenbudo, Kawartha Lakes, Port Perry, Seikikai Martial Arts/ Etobicoke, and West End. We could not have been as successful without your help. THANK YOU!! ☺

Our congratulations to ALL of our Children’s Tournament Participants!

TUESDAY & THURSDAY: 6:30 – 8:00PM

Sensei Larry O'Grady 6th Dan from the Seikikai (Etobicoke) Club taught our class on December 15th, since he was up in the area visiting with his family in Eganville. Sensei came one class too soon as he missed attending the Christmas party the following Tuesday. He focused on basic techniques and emphasized ‘looking before turning’. We also spent time working on the kihon pattern drill. After the class, Sensei Larry ran one of our students, Ben Broszmann, through his katas as he is a Junior Shodan-Ho. Thank you Sensei Larry for sharing your knowledge with us and our students, and also for taking the time away from your family. And, a special thank you for taking the extra time to look at Ben. We look forward to your next visit. Pictured below is a group photo of the class during Sensei Larry’s visit.

TUESDAY & FRIDAY:

ADULTS/CHILDREN 6:30 – 8:00PM

SUNDAY: ADULTS: 6:00 – 7:30PM

On November 25th, West End Karate was honoured with a visit from Sensei Dave Manara. The students enjoyed the insights that he, as a 9th Dan, had to offer. Over the years, Sensei Manara has trained to develop not only the application of speed, power, timing, accuracy and judgment, but how to portray these to students. Applying that experience, the class consisted of Sensei refining karate to the basic core and then gradually building drills around it. As drills became more complex all the students found that they could focus on techniques at their own level. The class concluded by using those skills for partnered kihon kumite practice and jiyu kumite. Thank you, Sensei Manara, for sharing your perspective and years of wisdom with our dojo. We welcome you to join us anytime.

The Christmas season began with the spirit of generosity to the 'Basketeers'. An organization supporting women shelters ‘to aid women in new beginnings'; laundry baskets are filled with items needed for the kitchen, bath or bedroom for a woman (and her children) to start a new life. West End generously decorated and donated two baskets filled with everything from crock pot - to coffee maker - to dishes. The 'Basketeers' organization collected a total of 1,685 baskets to support 39 women's shelters! We encourage others to donate next year to this worthy cause that has locations around Ontario, http://www.basketeers.ca/about.htm.

My Thoughts on Teaching By Sensei Veronica Cizmar Shodan, Seikikai Martial Arts, Etobicoke

What is the best way to teach karate? There are many opinions on this subject; however, what is universally agreed upon when giving instruction in any pursuit is that it is the responsibility and commitment of the teacher. With the accomplishment of attaining a black belt, there is a sense of expectation - that we need to guide our students to achieve and, eventually, surpass that same goal.

We have all had teachers guide us for a significant part of our lives – our parents, those through the education systems, and beyond. We have all encountered great teachers, and not so great teachers. I think back to the ones who influenced me the most, and the one thing they all had in common was their approachability and friendliness. I felt comfortable asking questions, and when I asked questions I learned and discovered.

I have been a teacher for many years who teaches private classical piano to adults and children, as well as help raise a niece and nephew. In the last few years, I have taken on the role of teaching the martial arts and monthly self-defense classes to women and children in a shelter. While I could go into great detail, what I outline here is merely my opinion, based on my experience, as I strongly feel there are ways to teach that will enhance a student‘s interest, participation and having fun.

Attaining a black belt does not mean we can all be teachers. Dojo heads must be vigilant in consistently assessing the performance of their student black belts. The leaders need the teaching help, but they also need to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of the black belt students. They must be honest and critical, while allowing those who teach well to guide the class.

Black belts must leave their ego outside the dojo. A misplaced ego will easily rub off negatively on those who are young. If they see you being harsh to someone, they may do it in turn. Teach them proper karate manners and conduct yourself in the same way. Teachers must encourage students, not discourage. Phrases like 'well done', 'good job', 'great effort' and 'thank you' are easy to express and go a long, long way. Black belts could wear their white belt occassionally and train at the back of the class to remind them of how they began. A little humility never hurts.

Teachers must not be too harsh with criticisms. Some dojos have young children, and karate already tends to have a high drop out rate compared to other sports. We know karate teaches us patience – we often need to exercise that patience and give students their space, and time within it to learn.

Smile – self-explanatory. While teaching, listen to your own voice. Are you encouraging or critical? Is your voice aggressive or pleasant? Can you

be heard or are you yelling too much? Are you watching the reactions of your students? Are they engaged or staring at the ceiling?

Maintain discipline. Classrooms are not babysitting services. Work your students hard, but keep it interesting and insist on proper and good manners. Do not be afraid to be wrong. Black belts are continually learning and may not have all the answers. If you don't know something, admit so. Then help yourself and your students by researching a possible answer for a later time.

When teaching, offer advice and criticism, but be honest and polite. However, amongst black belts, criticisms are not necessarily wanted. Only offer advice when asked, as egos will still bruise easily – no matter how senior a belt you are! Dojo heads must be able to recognize those who are strong leaders as opposed to those who are better assistants. Use the strongest skills of each black belt and you will have a well rounded dojo.

Teaching adults and children is not the same. When you have a mixed class, a balance is required. Watch the language that you are utilizing. Adults may understand complicated words, but children do not. You may need to rephrase, or repeat your instructions in a manner that young children will understand.

After teaching, regularly ask your Sensei how you did. Be prepared and open for criticism and feedback. Your Sensei is not judging, but they may privately correct and/or suggest alternative methodologies. Criticisms hurt when delivered the wrong way. When giving criticism, try to make it positive and never single out a student in class in a punitive way. Assess the reaction of the student – do they understand your critique? Are they hurt by it? Ask them if they understand and make sure they are okay.

Remind your students to ask questions. Leave time for a question period if you can, or ask throughout the class, if anyone has questions. However, we know children often have more questions than there is time for, so let them know they can approach you at break time or after class.

In conclusion, there are many effective and ineffective ways to teach, and upon taking this responsibility, I highly recommend researching, training and observing other instructors – particularly those whom you admire.

DON’T MISS THE THORNHILL

TOURNAMENT NEXT MONTH

The Winter Tournament in Thornhill is on February 25, 2012. We encourage all the local karate-kas to come out and participate. There are many ways to support the event.

The obvious one is to compete in the kumite and kata events, which is a great training exercise in facing your fears and controlling those butterflies. It is safe and fun!

Another is to help at the competitive ring stations as a Volunteer for scoring the meets. It is an intriguing exercise to learn how an odd number of competitors is sorted out for the sparring events. The scorekeepers will see and learn this important procedure.

A third is to come as a spectator to support your dojo competitors. This is a very good idea for those who have never attended a tournament or competed before. See how it is done and how safe it is. Watch the black belts from other clubs perform. It is good, inexpensive family entertainment for just a couple of hours on a Saturday morning.

The prices for competing and the spectators are required to cover the costs of the rental of the gym and the purchase of the trophies. It is part of the organization’s training program to provide these regular, safe tournaments. In order to keep the costs as low as possible attendance is a big factor. On the practical side, higher attendance can keep the costs reasonable, so your participation in whatever fashion helps.
