November and December are always busy months for GEMS, preparing for the Christmas Advent service, and having our See’s Candy fundraiser. This year was no exception, as we did all this and more. At our November 12th meeting we learned some basic self -defense techniques. Joellene Schwandt and two of her co-workers, Dep-uty Rachel Beuttler and Deputy Sandra Arauza gave the girls a lot of important information about what kind of things to be aware of when they are at the store or at the park, what to do if a stranger approaches them, what to do if someone grabs them. Then, the girls got to practice the techniques that they learned: screaming (which they all had down pretty well already), hitting, and running.
Joellene, Rachel and Sandra held bags and the girls were able to hit them as hard as they could. The highlight of the eve-ning was when Joellene donned her “red-man” protective suit, and the girls could practice their punching, kicking and hitting on her. The girls had a lot of fun, and also gained some excellent and practical information. Many thanks to Joellene and her fellow depu-ties for arranging this training!
We settled down our next meeting to practice our sing-ing for the December 2nd Worship Service. At this ser-vice, the girls sang a beautiful song, “One King” and it was a perfect song for the first Sunday in Advent, with Deonna Osmundson lighting the candle of Hope. The girls also led the congregation in singing praise and worship songs.
Girls Everywhere Meeting the Savior
Page - 3 THE CORNERSTONE January - February
On December 10th we had our annual Christmas party and also were able to go Christmas caroling. Seventeen girls and 5 counselors headed out to Ryken’s and the Lin’s houses, where we sang several Christmas carols. When we returned the girls exchanged gifts, and feasted on snacks.
The See’s Candy fundraiser was a big success once again, and we thank everyone in the congregation for their support in purchasing See’s Candy. The funds raised will be used to pay for camp for the 5th – 8th grade girls in the spring. We are blessed with an increase in the membership of GEMS this year, with several new faces. We’re also very thankful to have Beth Salie helping out at our meetings.
Our first meeting of 2008 will be Monday, January 14th. Upcoming events we’re looking forward to are the Soup and Pie Supper
in January, annual Father-Daughter dinner, and camp. Our club meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month , from 6:30 – 8:00 PM.
All girls 2nd grade – 8th grade are welcome. For more information, contact Robin Muirhead @ 847-4644.

Has it been that long? Whoops! We must be on Mexico time, “Hasta mañana”. We owe an update! We are still down here and go-ing strong. School, school, school is what has been keeping us hopping. Rod is back with his 5th graders as he was in San Diego and enjoying the change. He has 16 students. Tina has two groups, 1st -2nd graders and 3rd graders, having a total of 33 students. Most of our students have some type of minor learning disability that has kept them from progressing in the public schools. Because of our rural location, not much is offered to support these children in the classrooms. Our school accepts these types of students and pro-vides the necessary support that they need. Even though the majority of our students have minor problems there are a couple of classrooms with children with more severe problems. We provide them with a program where they learn to become self sufficient in the basic needs such as managing money, hygiene, cooking, reading and writing. Our school currently employs 17 teachers, teacher’s assistants and support personnel. It’s a challenge to keep these kids motivated and focused on school tasks but even more of a chal-lenge to teach them Christian values and etiquette. The school has become an evangelizing tool, allowing us to reach out to the stu-dents and their families. We pray it’s making a difference in their lives.
OUR GIRLS ARE IN THEIR NEW HOUSE! We had a nice inauguration service for them on Nov 10. They had waited so long to get in and now they have a beautiful house (to keep clean!). They continue to thank the Lord for what has been provided for them. We’ve included some pictures but the best way is to come down for a visit and see it. A lot of groups had their part in this house that took 4 years to complete. Thank-you to Anaheim CRC and others for your part in the big picture.

Women’s Minist ry closed out the 2007 year in a couple of different w ays.
Our evening women’s Bible study met and reviewed our last lesson in a very relaxed setting. With pajamas and slippers on, we ate reindeer cookies, ice cream and other wonderful food provided by Denise Hitch. Our group meets on Tuesday evenings @ 7:00 in our church fellowship hall. We continue to study David with Beth Moore’s “A Heart Like His” study. We have about 12 women in the evening study. A few of them alter-nate from the morning to evening or vice versa, so we average about eight each week. This is wonderful and consistent group of women that are really creating a bond and are growing closer to Christ through this study.
The morning women’s Bible study took on a different approach. These ladies are working through two dif-ferent studies: “A Heart Like His,” by Beth Moore and “Experiencing Christ Together,” series. This large group of nearly 30 ladies divides weekly into 4 different groups(2 for each study). Because of the large num-ber of ladies, they decided to gather for an extra week and have a luncheon, bringing all the ladies together. Twenty women were able to attend the luncheon where we sat around the large table in the fellowship hall(originally decorated for the Married & Loving It progressive dinner), and sang Christmas carols led by Jolene Bylsma, on the piano. We listened to a devotion on “A Christmas To-Do List”: Believe, Obey, Tell and Experience. We reminisced about past Christmas family traditions and then prepared for our meal with a “popcorn” prayer time. Pastor Gary closed our prayer time and we dove into wonderful salads, soups and desert all provided by the attending ladies. It was a wonderful time of fellowship and celebration of our dear Savior’s birth. Another great way to close out the 2007 year.
Let’s not forget about our wonderful ladies that take care of all the little ones while we meet. Mornings are covered by Clary Lanting and Andrew Muirhead, with Story Hour and Caroline Hoeakstra and June DeWitt in the nursery. We have also been having some extra helpers with the children in the morning and we are thankful for them. In the evenings, Clary Lanting, Caroline Hoekstra and Michelle Tanis have taken turns watching those children. We are so thankful for our childcare. Without them we would not be able to consis-tently meet and study God’s Word. We also want to thank Ming Lin for her service. Every week Ming comes early to set coffee and get trays ready for each small group. She is one of those behind the scenes people that makes things happen. She is a humble servant and we are so thankful for her time.
Our Women’s Bible studies will start up again in 2008 on Tues. Jan the 8th. The morning study will meet at 9:30. The “Experiencing Christ Together” ladies will be starting a new book and the ladies studying David, “A Heart Like His” will review Week 6 Days 1-3. The evening study will meet at 7:00 and will also review Week 6 Days 1-3.
If there is anyone interested in joining one of these groups, please contact one of the following leaders, or the church office: Jolene Bylsma, Connie Herter, Rosemary Kamper or Becky Hoekstra.

Tools For In -De pt h St udy God desires that we all grow in our knowledge and not be satisfied with the basic teachings of the Good News.
"Let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity ...” Heb. 6:1
There are so many personal benefits to deeper study of God’s Word for direction in your Spiritual Formation and Fit-ness Training.
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God's way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Here is a list of some of the tools you can add to your personal study to help you dig deeper. Some are available in our church library, but having copies of your own and the ability to make notes in them is very helpful and valu-able. Like the Bereans in Acts 17:11 examine what is being taught with God’s Word.
“Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”

The Cadet group continues to meet on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month. The Lord has blessed the Cadets with both new cadets and new counselors. When all cadets are in attendance we have 14 boys. We added two new counselors this year, so now can have 2 counsel-ors for each cadre (age group).
Many "thank-you’s" to all in the congregation who so generously gave food and clothes to Community Shar-ing. The cadets enjoyed going to your homes and picking up the bags. This year we were able to split the lists into four routes instead of two. This made things much more relaxing. Through your donations we were able to bring a truck-bed full of food and clothes into Community Sharing.
The Cadets are busy sanding and polishing their Pinewood Derby cars. Dennis Becker heated up his shop so we could cut out the kids’ custom designs and start sanding away. Lead needs to be added to get all the cars to regulation weight. Soon the axles will be put in place and the kids will be itching to get some practice runs in. The big races for the Golden Bear Council will take place on February 9th in Ripon. Everyone is wel-come to come and enjoy a spaghetti dinner then watch the races.
A special thank you to Dennis for opening up his shop and providing the equipment needed for these boys to customize their cars. He has done it every year. It’s an exciting outing for them.

December 2007
Dear supporters, friends and family;
The last few months have been quite busy but uneventful except some small struggles with our health with all the viruses our boys drag home from school. Flights have continued to be booked deep into December - a time of the year that historically business has tapered off. We are also seeing more than 70% of flights being directly for Churches and Missions. This year the aircraft is projected to fly 520 total hours which is also a significant increase. The mission or-ganizations in Mongolia had indicated that their efforts would shift more to places further afield in Mongolia and we are now seeing that materialize.
One of the maintenance projects that I working on is the installation of a new 406 Mhz Emergency Locator Transmitter. I worked for more than a year to get a Field Approval from the FAA for the rack or shelf to mount the unit and I am looking forward to finishing the project soon. The replacement has become necessary due to the fact that monitoring of the older 121.5 Mhz Units will defi-nitely be completely discontinued in 2009. The 406 Mhz unit is the latest in technology – able to transmit a digitized identification and Global Posi-tioning System location directly to a satellite. It allows the owner/operator to be immediately informed of difficulties by telephone. This represents a
significant increase in safety to our pilot and passengers. Experience in other countries has shown the position reports to be accurate. With accurate position reports, searches have been reduced to just a few hours – which can be critical in the Mongolian winter where temperatures can easily reach -35C (-31F).
We recently had a visit from an Avionic Technician from MAF United States in Nampa Idaho. He came to help us with required biannual checks and inspections of Avionics and Instruments. He also helped us with some of the wiring for the GPS communications cable for the above mentioned ELT project.
Until the middle of November the winter had been quite mild. With no significant snow fall to reflect the sun back out into space. There was still ground warming and we had been experiencing daytime temperatures above freezing. Now in December we have some snow and the temperatures have fallen significantly to -15 C (5 F) for the high and -25 C (-13 F) at night.
Joshua had his third birthday in August and now both boys are attending pre-school at the Ulaanbaatar International School. For us this facility is a major blessing. During the cold
weather if the boys were to be confined to the apartment they would soon be climbing the walls. Daniel continues to have difficulties with his attention span and behavior which we believe is due to a small degree of hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorder. We are gratified that Daniel’s teachers like him and are willing to work with him. Every school day we get a report of his successes and failures. Rosane has also made an effort to help Daniel by finding ways to burn energy. The most successful method she has found is to bring him to a swimming pool and ice skating.
The pilot needs to take a break and will go back to Finland for the holidays. The aircraft will not be flying and we will also take the opportunity to take a break in a little warmer climate. On December 20 we plan to take the Siberian Express train down to Beijing and from there take another train down to Hong Kong. We have been watching the weather reports and the day time temperatures in Hong Kong have been around +20 C (68 F). It will be nice to take a break from bundling up ourselves and the kids when we go out and simply walk around in our shirt sleeves. We plan to spend the New Year and return sometime around January 9.
Prayer and Praise Points: Praise for the increase of our core Mission work to 70 %. Pray for safety and rest on our journey through China by Train. Pray the continued adjustment in pre-school for both Daniel and Joshua. Praise for Rosane’s full recovery and good health.

Dear Friends
We have a lot to celebrate – God is with us today, tomorrow and forever.
Have a blessed Christmas and a wonderful 2008.
The Harrewyn Family
Mongolia
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Married and Loving It group. Our group celebrated the Holiday season with our annual Christmas Progressive Dinner. We began the evening at the Fontaine’s new house. We were warmly welcomed with an island filled with appetizers of all types. We enjoyed everything from chicken wings to a veggie tray. After loading up on the good stuff we ventured down the hill and around the corner to the Sa-lie’s house where we enjoyed salad at a table decorated for a king. After we all had our share of the healthy stuff it was off to the fellowship hall at church where a meal fit for a king had been prepared. We enjoyed ham, turkey, stuff-ing, potatoes and all the fixings. After dinner there was a beautiful table set up with a huge assortment of desserts to tempt our palate one last time. After dessert we all jumped in on a game of catch phrase before we realized how late the time was! It was a wonderful evening with over a dozen couples attending by the end of the night. A big thank you to all who shared their homes, prepared food, and cleaned up to make this night such a huge success.
The Lord has truly blessed our group with many couples that desire to enjoy a more intimate relationship with their spouse and their Lord. Next month we will continue our Bible study from Focus on the Family entitled “The Masterpiece Marriage”. This study has proven to be very rewarding and has stimulated a lot of discussion about God’s plan in designing marriage. Married and Loving It is a group designed for married couples of all ages, we typically meet on the first Sunday of the month at 5:00 in the fellowship hall. Feel free to join us at our next meeting or give Steve and Beth Salie a call at 847-3580 with any questions.
O pe r a t io n M O M Bouquets of “thank you’s” to everyone who contributed to the donations collected for Opera-tion Mom’s Christmas Wish List packing on Sunday, November 18th at the Teamster’s Hall, in Hayward, CA. You’re invited to visit our display downstairs in the fellowship hall, to see
a photo of all the volunteers who helped in the preparation of packing boxes for our troops. So far, two emails have been received from two soldiers. A copy of their replies are on display.
The next mailing will be in March 2008. Thank you and Merry Christmas

For our Christmas lesson we do the story time a little differently. I usually bring lots of books and Nativity scenes and let the children do most of the telling of that beautiful story to the leaders. Of course, they do a great
job! We also made orna-ments and decorated cookies for ourselves as well as others. Thank you Ming for helping us clean up!
HAPPY NEW YEAR from Story Hour!
Giving Pastor Gary one of the our fabulous cookies!
Jonah and the whale - 12/4
Our bell is ringing again thanks to Jake Oosterman. Jake went up the tower, removed the broken clapper, and then had Oakdale Iron Works repair the clapper at no expense to the church. Jake then put everything back together with help from his son, Mark, and Pastor Gary. Thanks everyone!
We are still working on design, exact location, and bids from a couple of companies on our sign.
We hope to have some kind of flooring put in the sitting room next to the handicap bath-room soon.
At the writing of this letter the refrigerator is on the blink, it was leaking and sparking, so we are out getting bids on larger refrigerators, either home or commercial, whichever we can get the best value. The refrigerator was considered inadequate in size for several years and now would be the time to replace it.

As we rush through this season, the children helped remind us what this time of year is all about - the birth of our Savior. As they retold the story of Christmas, sang Christmas songs and sang "Happy Birthday" to Jesus, we were blessed.
Over 30 kids participated in this annual program! The kids were so excited to have grandpas, grandmas, moms, dads, neighbors and friends there to share the story and to share their talents. The angels were dazzling, the shepherds and sheep role played so well and the wise men looked so wise in their costumes! Mary and Joseph were humble yet proud and the donkey and cow did a great job being a donkey and a cow! The narrators all did a great job telling the story that we all love to hear! Many busy hands helped to make this program a great suc-cess.
As a parent and teacher in Sunday School, I was so proud of all the kids! At practices sometimes it
was a little wild and crazy but the night of the program each kid wanted so badly to make every family or friend there proud of them. And they made us all so proud!!! We are so blessed with all these children and I thank God for each and every child. They make me smile and remind me that God is good! Thank you Lord for the many gifts you have given us!

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME AS A PARTNER AT CCRC?
As we begin this New Year in celebration of what God has done and continues to do in and through us, let’s review our own personal commitments, including our covenants together as the body of Christ. At CCRC we never ask our partners to do more than the Bible clearly teaches. We only encourage our members to do what the Bible expects every Christian to do. These responsibilities are spelled out in the Membership Covenant.
The CCRC Membership Covenant
1. I WILL PROTECT THE UNITY OF MY CHURCH
By acting in love toward other members
By refusing to gossip
By following the leaders
By reconciling conflict
"So let us concentrate on the things which make for harmony, and on the growth of our fellowship together.” Rom. 15:19(Ph)
"Live in complete harmony with each other - each with the attitude of Christ toward each other." Rom. 15:5(LB)
"Have a sincere love for your fellow believers, love one another earnestly with all your hearts." 1 Peter 1:22(GN)
"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs ... ” Eph.4:29
"Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be no advantage to you.” Heb. 13:17
2. I WILL SHARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF MY CHURCH By praying for it’s growth
By inviting the unchurched to attend
"Having received Christ as my Lord and Savior and been baptized, and being
in agreement with CCRC’s statements, strategy, and structure, I now feel led
by the Holy Spirit to unite with the Community Christian Reformed church family.
In doing so, I commit myself to God and to the other partners to do the following.”
Page - 17 THE CORNERSTONE January - February
By warmly welcoming those who are alone and/or visit
"To the church ... we always thank God for you and pray for you constantly." 1 Thess. 1:2
"Go out into the country ... and urge anyone you find to come in, so that My House will be full." Luke 14:23 (LB)
"So, warmly welcome each other into the church, just as has warmly welcomed you; then God will be glorified.” Rom. 15:7 (LB)
3. I WILL SERVE THE MINISTRY OF MY CHURCH
By discovering my gifts and talents
By being equipped to serve
By developing a servant's heart
"Serve one another with the particular gifts God has given each of you ..."1 Peter 4:10 (Ph)
"God gave ... some to be pastors and teachers to prepare God's people for works of ministry, so that the Body of Christ may be built up ...” Eph.4:11-12
"Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Jesus Christ ... who took on the very nature of a servant ... ” Phil 2:3-4, 7
4. I WILL SUPPORT THE LIFE OF MY CHURCH
By attending faithfully By living a godly life
"Let us not give up the habit of meeting together ... but let us encourage one another.” Heb. 10:25
"But whatever happens, make sure that your everyday life is worthy of the gospel of Christ.” Phil. 1:27 (Ph)
