January 10, 2016 ~ The Baptism of the Lord

THANK YOU… The Christmas season at OLM was filled with generosity and love. Each of you added to this season by your presence at our liturgies. Our church decorators, cleaners, liturgical ministers and music ministers all contributed to help make our celebrations joyful. There were a lot of nice comments passed on by visitors to our parish about its spirit. Your generosity as a parish to the needs of the poor through the giving tree shows again the spirit of helping others in need. Thank you also for the many items of food etc. that arrived at the parish offices these past few weeks. Everyone is grateful. As we enter into the New Year pray for each other that God’s blessings continue to be upon us as a community of faith…Fr. Joe BAPTISM OF THE LORD… Today’s feast officially ends our Christmas Liturgical Season. We enter back into Ordinary time only for 5 weeks. Lent is early this year Feb.10 is Ash Wednesday. This feast day reminds us that the power of the Trinity Father, Son and Spirit shone forth as Jesus in his human nature was baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. For Jesus this moment was significant and he goes for to accomplish the mission of redeeming humanity. Our Baptisms signify for us that we share in the life of Jesus as adopted Sons and Daughters. How privileged you are to be called “children of God now” St John tells us. Celebrate your baptism too. Make a commitment to be the person that God wants you to be. Be a person of faith who lives out their faith in Jesus each day by your words and actions. SERVING CHRIST IN OTHERS…. This is the theme of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal which began in September and end this month. Thank you for your generous response as a parish to the appeal. I know we went over our goal and will let you know the numbers when I get the final tally. Your support has helped the lives of many people in our diocese. There is still time to make a donation on behalf of OLM you can do this on line by going to: www.2015appeal.com to make a donation and name OLM as your parish…thanks. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT… Monday January 11th, 7-8 p.m. join us: theme is: “ Seeing the face of Jesus in others. ” POPE FRANCIS …asks us this month to prayer for this special intention: “That sincere dialogue among men and women of different faiths may produce the fruits of peace and justice.”

JUBLIEE YEAR OF MERCY…12/8/15 – 11/20/16 “Heavenly Father, break my heart for what breaks yours. Help me to hear the pain of your children so that I can help set them free” … Dynamic Catholic ARE YOU SIGNED UP ON OUR E MAIL LIST?... Just a reminder if you would like to receive any parish e mails that are sent out you need to sign up on the home page of our parish website. www.ourladyofthemountain.org go to the icon and enter you e mail and then acknowledge an e mail confirmation that you will receive any e mails that our sent out. You can also sign up for Faith Direct and become a regular giver by on line contributions or make a one- time donations at any time. You might notice the website has been redesigned over the past couple of months. We joined the growing number of parishes that use the same webmaster as part of a diocesan initiative to offer parish website service and more catholic information for our parishioners. WHY WE ARE CATHOLIC… “For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit, he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and was made man.” The Word became flesh for us in order to save us by reconciling us with God, who “loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins”, “the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world,” and “he was revealed to take away sins” - The Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs 456-457 A COMMENT… LIGHT A CANDLE… A most popular Catholic Devotion that goes back ages is lighting a candle before a picture or statue of a saint. The candle symbolizes the prayer intention that is made to the saint. In OLM we have statues of St. Theresa and St. Anthony in the gathering space and in the wing nearest the police station there are statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Jude that have candle stands. Also located in this wing is the Statue of the risen Jesus and Mary. In the back side entrance to the church is another candle stand with a statue of Mary. It is nice to witness the faith of people who trust in the intercession of the saints. Who is your favorite saint?
