Lost, or found? The scene in Matthew 2:1-12 has popularly been called the Epiphany, which means "showing." Why “showing”? Because God revealed, He showed divine love to humanity through Jesus Christ. And while many of us are not familiar with the definition of Epiphany, we know the story perhaps a little too well. This story of the three magi visiting Jesus has ceased to challenge or inspire our Christian walk. Yet the story has much to teach us. The magi sought, and were humbly led, to give homage and honor to Jesus. Today our modem minds lead us in exactly opposite direction. We seek peace and fulfillment through our technology, ingenuity and

knowledge. We rely on skill and science, failing to recognize our dependence on God. We have forgotten humility, we have lost our seeking hearts. We no longer seek, we no longer find. God shows, but we no longer look. Make this Epiphany a day of new searching. Look deep into your hearts for God’s presence, and if you cannot find him there, set out on a journey anew.

The Sunday after New Year's Day is the feast of the Epiphany. In imitation of the magi, who, according to Matthew's Gospel, came to the home of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, we ask Christ to visit our home and to bless all who dwell there. Inscribe above your door with a piece of chalk: 20+C+M+B+12 for the year and the Latin words “Christus mansionem benedicat,” May Christ bless this house.

Stewardship Reflection for January 8, 2012 - Epiphany of the Lord

“They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they

opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold,

frankincense, and myrrh...” - Matthew 2:11

Notice the distinct order of events in the Magi’s

visit. First they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they

presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray

before we presume to present our gifts to the Lord. We never

know what gifts God might be asking us to share. But when we

kneel before Him in prayer we will find the answer.

How Much Time Do You Spend with God? Minutes! Minutes! Minutes! How many

commercials do we hear every day advertising "free minutes"

or "endless minutes?" While the cell phone companies are

making us all aware of every minute that we spend talking or

texting, do we keep track of the minutes that we spend with

God? As much as some companies might advertise "free

minutes" the fact is that the minutes of our day are actually a

free gift from God alone. Every day God gives each of us

1,440 minutes – no strings attached – no contract to sign.

What do we do with those minutes? Do we give any of them

back to God? Consider these options:

Can you spend 1 minute every morning thanking God

for His blessings and asking Him how He wants you to use

your gifts?

Can you spend 10 minutes at the beginning or end of

each day in quiet prayer, spiritual reading and reflection?

Can you spend 30 minutes one day a week attending a

weekday Mass?

Can you commit to giving God 60 minutes every

week for Sunday Mass?

Try this test for one week. Keep track of the time

you spend with God and the time you spend talking, texting,

surfing the Internet and watching TV. Considering that God

gives you 1,440 free minutes every day, is He getting His fair

share back from you?

Epiphany of the Lord

The prophet Isaiah returns one more time in this Christmas season, now on the feast of the Epiphany. In the final chapters of Isaiah (chapters 56-66), the prophet is proclaiming God's word to the Israelites who

have returned to Jerusalem after the Exile in Babylon. What at first was a joyful return, has turned inward. Those who have taken up positions of power after returning to Jerusalem have marginalized even the Israelites who remained in the land during the Babylonian Captivity, not to mention the people of other nations whose defeat of Babylon actually facilitated Israel's restoration. In response, Isaiah proclaims that God's salvation is for all. Every nation will stream to Jerusalem to worship the Lord. Isaiah's message is reflected in Matthew's Gospel as he tells the story of the birth of Jesus. Christ comes for everyone! The followers of Christ in Matthew's community are not only the Jews who became Christians, but also the Gentiles who came to believe that Jesus was the Messiah. In Matthew's Gospel this latter group is represented by the Magi, who come from afar, while the Jewish Christians, who believe in God's word, are represented by Joseph, the faithful spouse of Mary. While the Epiphany is a great and joyous feast, it contains a cautionary message as well. God's salvation is for everyone. That means that no one can be excluded from the invitation to follow Christ. And once they choose to do so, they become our brothers and sisters in the Lord. If that is the case, when we demean, cast aside, or ignore others, we open ourselves to the same condemnation with which Isaiah castigated the powerful in Jerusalem in the sixth century BC. If we add statues of the Magi to our Nativity scene, it also means that we must add the stranger, the foreigner, the person not like us, to our life in Christ. ©2011 Liturgical Publications Inc

What is a sacramental seal and

where did it come from?

Leaving more than just a memory, there are some events in our life that are truly transforming, making us different people. The same thing can be said of spiritual things, especially sacraments. A sacramental seal or character is a theological concept to describe the life-changing and permanent effect of three sacraments on the person: baptism, confirmation, and holy orders. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that these sacraments confer a seal "by which the Christian shares in Christ's priesthood and is made a member of the Church according to different states and functions. This configuration to Christ and the Church, brought about by the Spirit, is indelible" (#1121). Once we receive these sacraments, we are forever changed. It's a spiritual "point of no return" whereby we take a step forward in our faith journey. We are marked as people of faith, as those who have received the Spirit and as those called to serve in ordained ministry. That is why these sacraments are received only once. The direction is set, the choice is made, and we are called by God to be his people. Nothing can change that, not even our own sinfulness. © 2010 Liturgical Publications Inc

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Where on earth would you go to honor the magi? Iran or Saudi Arabia, Tarshish or the Isles come to mind, but Cologne, Germany would be a good choice. There the Shrine of the Three Kings has been the centerpiece of the city’s cathedral since the fourth century. Today it is the largest reliquary in the world: a gilded and ornamented triple casket gleaming high above the altar. In the fourth century, the supposed relics of the wise men were taken from Constantinople to Milan, where they remained until the German Emperor with the unlikely name Frederick Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne. Ever since, pilgrims have streamed into the city to honor the magi, the first of all pilgrims, and thus the heavenly patrons of all who have some holy wanderlust. This largest Gothic cathedral in Europe today was begun in the mid-1200s to house the relics. In medieval times, the relics in a city’s possession were often the key to a sound international economy. The reliquary was last opened in 1864, and the remains of three men were indeed discovered. The cathedral is well worth a visit, with enormous twin spires forming the largest façade of any church in the world (it is the model for St. Patrick’s in New York). Construction began in 1248 and ended in 1880, a six-hundred-year project. Today, it is a World Heritage Site, described by the U.N. as “an exceptional work of human creative genius.” This great treasure of our tradition suffered fourteen direct bomb hits in World War II but did not collapse. Do All Legal Experts Approve of Roe?

No. Roe has been criticized by several Supreme Court justices, and even by legal experts who favor legalized abortion. Justice Byron White called it “an exercise of raw judicial power.” Yale law professor John Hart Ely has said that Roe is “a very bad decision….It is bad because it is bad constitutional law, or rather

because it is not constitutional law and gives almost no sense of an obligation to try to be.” Edward Lazarus, former clerk to Justice Harry Blackmun who wrote the Roe opinion, says that “Roe, as constitutional interpretation, is virtually impossible to defend.”

R osary Making Class

Learn to make your own Rosaries. Anyone interested in taking a Rosary making class, one is being offered by the Council of Catholic Women on January 17, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the Bethlehem Room. Ann Downer, a member of the council, has been making Rosaries for over 15 years and wants to share her experience with others. Ann has made over 1,500 Rosaries herself. Most all of what she makes she donates to the Prison Ministries, Military personnel, and Missionaries abroad. If you are interested, please contact Ann at 746-4669. All materials will be supplied by the CCW at no cost and you can keep the first Rosary you make. These Rosaries will make a wonderful gift for family and friends. The class will take about two hours and some refreshments will be served. If you wish to continue making Rosaries, the CCW will supply everything you will need. These additionally made Rosaries will go to Missionaries around the world. A great way to start the year.

T he Neapolitan Ice Cream Shoppe will be hosting a monthly fundraiser for our Council of Catholic Women. They will donate 20% of their sales from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on the 3rd Saturday of every month. They serve Working Cow ice cream products including premium ice cream, no sugar added, sherbets and frozen yogurts among other favorites. They are located at 2484 N. Heritage Oaks Path in Hernando, just off Hwy 486 near the Publix shopping plaza. Treat yourself to ice cream and help the CCW raise money.

E vening Bible Study will start Monday, January 9th with a Little Rock Scripture Study entitled Praying the Scriptures. This is a 7-week study including an introduction, which gives a greater appreciation of the Scriptures as a source of our prayers, especially the rich history and meaning of the prayers of the Mass. All are invited to join us—no prior experience with Bible Study is needed. We meet Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in Citrus Hills. This year, Pope John Paul II Catholic School has a new program called Investment in Education. We will be giving away $50,000 and at the same time, we will be raising $50,000 for our school! For those of you who are not aware of our fundraiser, it’s a drawing that takes place over 10 months, each month five entries are drawn and each winner receives $1,000. The entry is placed back in the barrel for each subsequent drawing. The cost to enter is $100 and if you would like to split the cost of a ticket with friends, you may do a four way split which would only cost $25 each! A Ticket makes a great gift!

To purchase a ticket, contact the school at 746-2020. The first drawing is January 4, 2012, so do not delay!

The Catholics Come Home® initiative for the Diocese of St. Petersburg is a media campaign intended to show the beauty of our faith and to invite those who have left the Catholic faith or just “wandered away” to come back home. The Advent/Christmas season provides an excellent opportunity to invite people to come home to the Catholic Church.

From December 16-January 22 television commercials will be aired on almost every network and cable station in the Tampa Bay media market. These are positive messages that will evoke pride in our Catholic faith and will allow viewers who have been away from the practice of the Catholic faith to say, “There’s a place for us—we are invited back!”

The television ads alone are not sufficient. The invitation, witness and hospitality of all parishioners is needed. We can invite family members, friends, neighbors and fellow workers to rediscover their Catholic faith or embrace it for the first time. Invite them home this Christmas!

Counseling Services Available

Catholic Charities provides services to all persons, without regard to race, religion, gender, national origin or handicapped conditions. It’s difficult to ask someone for help. Most of us think we should be able to handle our problems on our own. There are licensed Therapists available in Citrus County who counsel on a sliding fee scale so that services can be made available to all in need.

Please contact us if you are having difficulty dealing with a loss, parenting an out of control teenager, feeling anxious or depressed, or having a difficult time in your life. Tricky Tray

The Council of Catholic Women of Our Lady of Grace Church is hosting their annual Tricky Tray Fund Raiser, Saturday, January 21, 2012, in the Parish Life Center, 6 Roosevelt Blvd., Beverly Hills. Doors open at 10:00 a.m. and the drawings begin at 11:30 a.m.

Our Tricky Tray features baskets with contents valued at $25 or more, raffles and money trees. Items this year include a mahjong set, gift certificates for golf, restaurants and supermarkets. You may purchase a sheet of 25 numbered tickets for $5 for deposit in a bag adjacent to your choice of baskets. The Life South Blood Mobile will be on site. Ticket tenders will be available for blood donors and for those who cannot stay. Proceeds go to needed items for the church and charitable contributions.
