The teddy bear went with Tony and remained close all through the x-rays, tests, and consultations. With the surgery completed, Tony was heavily bandaged and had to remain still for a couple of days. Finally, the day came for the removal of the bandages. Though his vision was blurred at first, it gradually clarified and for the first time Tony could look into the faces of his parents. Before long it was time for Tony to be discharged and go home. Upon leaving the hospital, Tony said to the surgeon, “I want you to have this”, and he handed him his teddy bear. He wanted to give his dear surgeon friend the most precious gift he had, so full was his heart with love. Over the years, that teddy bear sat in the glass case on the hos- pital’s tenth floor, one eye missing, one ear chewed off. In front of the teddy bear was the surgeon’s card, and a note which read, “This is the highest fee I have ever received for professional services ren- dered.” This true story took place during the Vietnam War where life was being violently extinguished; in Africa, where tyrants were massacring millions of people. Yet, in the midst of this global dark- ness, this teddy bear shone. It was a pinpoint of brightness joined with millions of others and still remains a sign of God in this world. Epiphany is a feast of revelation; light in the darkness; and travelers who follow the star, that light that would make a difference. As someone said, the candle says to the darkness, “I beg to differ.” The wise men wanted to differ with the world’s dark deeds and not just bemoan its terrible state. This and That: Epiphany and the Teddy Bear

Six–year-old Tony was born with an eye problem; he was almost totally blind. He doctor was ready to try a new surgery.

Tony had a favorite teddy bear that he kept with him at all times. This teddy had begun to show signs of wear. One eye was missing, one ear was chewed off. Over the years, that teddy bear sat in the glass case on the hos-pital’s tenth floor, one eye missing, one ear chewed off. In front of the teddy bear was the surgeon’s card, and a note which read, “This is the highest fee I have ever received for professional services ren-dered.” This true story took place during the Vietnam War where life was being violently extinguished; in Africa, where tyrants were massacring millions of people. Yet, in the midst of this global dark-ness, this teddy bear shone. They would be a candle, a sign of God’s presence and, as such, an example and pattern for us!

Christmas Table Prayer

Glory to God in the Highest. And peace to his people on earth. Lord Jesus, in the peace of this season our spirits rejoice: With the beasts and the angels, With the shepherds and stars, With Mary and Joseph, we sing God’s praise. By your coming, may the hungry be filled with good things, and may our table and home be blessed. Glory to God in the highest. And peace to his peo-ple on earth. The Word became flesh, alleluia! And dwelt among us, alleluia!

Our Lady of Grace School The School Witnesses the Commitment of a

Seventh Grader to the Catholic Religion

Every month the school students from kinder-garten to grade eight attend Mass together. Father Sam Young, our pastor, normally cele-brates these Masses with the school. How-ever, Father Robert Leavitt said Mass for the school on October 11th this year.

Gregory Blum, seventh grade student at Our Lady of Grace School, stood up in front of the entire school population to declare his commitment to being a Catholic. He had been working with Dr. Jack Buchner, Pastoral Associate for Faith Forma-tion, since last spring to prepare for this day. Greg-ory joined OLGS when he was a sixth grader. He felt called to the Catholic faith during his first year as he studied religion daily. Father Leavitt and Dr. Buchner helped Gregory make his profession of faith during the Mass.

Greg’s parents, Michael and Sharlene, celebrated this wonderful occasion with their son.

Dr. Buchner gave Greg his first communion.

“A Wrapping We Will Go”

(One more picture)

On December 17th, twenty-five members of the Confirmation class volunteered to wrap gifts for the children of the St. Vincent’s Center in Timo-nium. St. Vincent's Center provides care for chil-dren of families in distress. Children live and attend school at the center while their parents get the help that is needed so that they can be re-united with their children. The children of St. Vincent’s get hun-dreds of donated presents from the community; and it takes many

volunteers many days to wrap all of the presents. St. Vincent’s is very grateful for the amount of volunteers that we bring each year to wrap. The Confirmation students en-joy this service because they know it benefits the children as well as the coordinators at the center.

Personal Spiritual Deepening Program: Living in God

In this New Year: Is God calling you to a deeper union with him?

Do you desire such a relationship and to be able to live more effectively out of it? Do you wish to develop a consistent habit of prayerful presence to God?

Would you like the guidance of a spiritual companion for daily contemplative living? Do you long to be a transforming presence in your world?

If your answer is yes to any of the above, it is important to know that the Personal Spiritual Deepening Program: Living in God can assist you in moment-by-moment awareness and openness to God’s grace in all the changing circumstances of your daily living.

It is comprised of a beginning and ending Saturday morning and afternoon retreat, as well as 5 Satur-day morning sessions with the 7 gatherings all spread over the 8 months from February to September 2012. The program will be held at St. Gabriel’s Retreat House in Catonsville, MD.

You are invited to attend one of the two information evenings on Monday, January 9th or Tues-day, January 17th at 7:00pm at St. Gabriel’s Retreat House, 1201 Hilton Ave, Catonsville, MD 21228 or visit our website at http://spiritual-deepening.webs.com or call Father Nicholas Amato at (443) 850-0794 or email him at [email protected] for more information.

Spiritual Guidance with Sr. Mary Therese

Spiritual guidance, often referred to as spiritual direction, is a unique relationship in which the spiritual guide listens and shares with a per-son to help them explore their relationship with God in their life and in their prayer.

The person seeking spiritual guidance may want to explore ways to pray, deal with a faith issue or struggle, discern about a decision or dis-cuss anything that has to do with their relationship with God. People usually meet with their spiritual guide about once a month and a dona-tion is requested to cover the service of the trained spiritual guide and the costs of the facility used.

Sister Mary Therese has been in training for spiritual guidance and is now ready to begin meeting with people. If you are interested in ex-ploring spiritual guidance, please contact Sister Mary Therese by:

Email: [email protected], or Phone: (410) 913-8978
