QUICK FACTSHere are a few important details about

the It’s Time Texas Community Challenge

The It’s Time Texas Community Challenge is a statewide competition that inspires individuals, organizations, and cities across Texas to engage in healthy activities in support of a healthier community.

Taking place January 6 – March 1, 2020, the 8-week challenge is built around healthy actions like getting a workout, eating nutritious food, and drinking plenty of water. People sign up on behalf of their city or school district and earn points for their community with every healthy action they submit.

At the end of the challenge, the cities and school districts with the most points in each size category earn a cash prize ($1800 or $500, respectively) to put toward a community health project. There are also regular prize giveaways for individual participants.

Registration opens October 17, 2019. It’s completely free to participate andyou can sign up any time at ittcommunitychallenge.com to start earning points for your community!

When we talk about the Challenge, we like to call it by its full name, the “It’s Time Texas Community Challenge.” We’d appreciate it if you would, too.

Please include the 2020 It’s Time Texas Community Challenge logo, available in the Resources section of the 2020 Community Challenge website.

The final video should be uploaded to the Community Challenge website and be publicly viewable on YouTube.

We’ve included a few tips and ideas for organizing a successful community eventin partnership with the It’s Time Texas Community Challenge. While cities often

choose to host a Mayor’s walk/run, the options are pretty much endless. The key is to choose a healthy activity your constituents will enjoy and rally the whole

community to get involved.

EVENT PLANNING CHECKLISTThe best way to up your city’s score is to

get the entire community involved!

Find a time: Pick a date for your event. Weekends or evenings are usually best for higher attendance.

Choose your location: It can be a local park, a walking trail, the mall,a rec center, a school track, or a designated route around town.

Send us the details: Once you know the kind of event you’d like to host, be sure to submit the details, including a promotional flyer or a link to your online event page, via our event registration form: www.surveymonkey.com/r/ittccevent

Get the word out: Post a few flyers, get your event online (via Facebook, Eventbrite or Meetup), and send a few emails with details about your event. Then, take to social media to amplify your message. Be sure to include that your event is free and open to the public and provide a link where people can go for more info.

Enjoy the day: Have fun, mingle with members of your community, and enjoy doing something healthy together. Remind people to register for the Community Challenge to start earning points!

MAKE IT FUNIf you are excited about your event,

the energy will be contagious.

Start with a thank you: Make sure to greet everyone as they gather and thank them for coming out to

support a healthier community.

Add a personal touch: Have the Mayor say a few words about the community benefits of participating in It’s Time Texas Community Challenge. Encourage those who attend to register at

www.ittcommunitychallenge.com and start logging their healthy activities at to earn points for your community! (A sample script is provided below.)

Get a group photo: Take pictures and video and upload them to the Challenge site for

community points! Make sure you get attendees’ permission.

Share next steps: When the event is over, thank everyone for participating and (optionally) invite them

to the next one. Encourage them to keep the healthy activities going and remind them that they can continue earning points for your city when they sign up at

ittcommunitychallenge.com.

Follow up: Send a quick follow up via email and/or social media thanking everyone who

attended or contributed to the event. Encourage folks to keep the momentum going and encourage others they know to get involved.

SAMPLE EVENT SCRIPTFeel free to put this script into your own words. You are

encouraged to sign the enclosed pledge on-site at the event and take a photo with attendees in the background to share on social

media and upload on the Challenge website.
